When I'm Alone with You - Chapter 16

Summary: Silas finally introduces Copia to Hanna.
Also Read on AO3
Hanna looked around the vast ministry building as she walked beside Silas.
“I know you said before that this place was big, but that was an understatement. This place is huge.” Hanna’s voice echoed slightly.
She looked up at the tall ceilings, eyes widening as she admired the beautiful artwork of the stained glass windows.
Silas chuckled shortly. “Yeah, you’ll get used to it. Thanks for coming to visit, by the way.”
Hanna smiled as she looked at him. “Of course, you just moved in. Think of it like… a housewarming party. Plus, you’ll finally introduce me to your work best friend.”
“It’s starting to sound like that’s the only reason you wanted to visit.” He joked.
“I have to see who I’m competing with for the title of your best friend.” She joked back, playfully nudging him with her elbow.
“You know that’s not going to happen.” Silas lightly scoffed.
“Oh, I’m aware.” She thought.
“Where is he, anyway?” Hanna’s brows knitted in confusion.
“He had a bit of work left to finish and then we can go out for lunch together. It’ll be good for y’all to meet finally.” Silas explained.
“Y’all.” Hanna teased, slightly putting on a fake southern accent. “You know you haven’t lived in Texas since you were a teenager, right?”
“Well, it’s not something that just… goes away?” Silas shrugged. “Är detta bättre?” (is this better?)
“Mycket bättre.” She teased. (much better)
“Texas mat är bättre.” He added. (Texas food is better)
Hanna faked a dramatic gasp while Silas laughed to himself. She rolled her eyes and shook her head.
“Anyway… while we are waiting, do you want a tour?” He asked.
“Your room, right? Because I’m not sure we have the time for all of this, no offense, but this place seems like a maze.” She winced.
“Yeah, it’s a maze at first. You learn the map in your head, eventually. I meant my room,” Silas replied.
“Okay, good.”
“It’s this way.” He gestured to one of the winding hallways. “And then you take a turn here.”
She followed him, and they caught up on stuff in both of their lives. Now that Silas wasn’t living as close to Hanna, it was different. It wasn’t a drastic change, but it still altered some of their usual daily routines. They were grateful to still have the option of texting and calling.
Hanna couldn’t help but notice someone else walking down the same hallway, going the opposite way. She appeared to be a nun of sorts, keeping her hands folded in front of her. The woman reached up to move the brown bangs out of her eyes.
“You okay?” Silas asked. He furrowed his brows when her steps faltered.
“What? Oh, um, yeah.” She fidgeted with her hands. “Um… who is that?” She whispered, glancing at the woman walking away.
Silas followed her gaze. “Oh, her? She’s one of the Sisters of Sin. They’re basically the nuns here.”
“Oh, okay…” She murmured.
“Here it is.” He smiled, opening his door.
She followed him in, looking around to see if anything had changed. “Oh, it’s like your old place.”
“That’s good… right?” Silas asked.
“Yeah, I was worried it would be completely different.”
“Hanna, I work as a janitor in an unholy church. Do you think I could afford to buy all new furniture and decorations?” He spoke in a deadpan tone.
She struggled to keep her expression neutral before losing it to a snicker, quietly chuckling. “No… but I thought you said the pay was fairly good.”
“Just because the pay is good does not mean I am by any means rich,”
“Yeah… I feel that.” She sighed.
“There’s no need to replace it all anyway. That wouldn’t be practical and I like the familiarity.” He added.
Hanna noticed a certain food and water bowl on the tile floor near the kitchen/dining area. “Speaking of familiar…” A smile crept onto her face. “Blizzard!”
The grey and white dog came trotting into the room at the sound of his name. He wagged his tail nonstop when he saw her.
“Blizzard! Oh, it’s so good to see you!” She crouched down and began to pet him, talking sweetly about how much she’d missed him.
Silas smiled at the sight. “I’d just taken him out for a walk before you came. He was sleeping on my bed afterward, well, until you woke him up.”
Hanna looked up at him, smiling sheepishly. “Sorry…”
“No, no, it’s fine. He’s been missing you.”
She looked back down at Blizzard, cooing at him. “Aw, did you miss me? Sweet boy.”
Once Blizzard had (surprisingly) enough pets, he hopped up on Silas’ couch and curled up in the corner, silently watching the two humans.
“It’s been odd not seeing him every day for sure.” She lightly frowned, taking a seat in one of the chairs.
Silas did the same, sitting down on the couch. He reached over to pet Blizzard before leaving him be. The dog was already falling asleep again.
He gave her a sympathetic look. “Yeah… but now you have way more time to focus on getting your own business started.”
“That’s true. Speaking of that, I’ve already started the process of finding an actual location!” She grinned.
“That’s great! I thought you were going to do it out of your apartment, though?” He asked.
“Well… I’m not completely saying no to that idea. I want to keep my options open.” Hanna shrugged.
“Hm, that makes sense. I really hope it’ll work out,”
“Yeah, me too.” She took a deep breath. “Anyway, how’s he been settling in?” She pointed to a sleeping Blizzard.
“Oh, he’s been doing pretty well. I was a little worried before the move, but he’s still eating normally. I think he really likes it here. The Ministry grounds are big, so he’s been having fun exploring when I take him out on walks.” Silas explained.
“That’s good to hear,” she said.
Silas looked up, hearing a knock at the door. “Oh, that’s probably Copia.”
Blizzard opened his eyes, raising his ears, but decided to stay on the couch. He let out a big sigh, already used to hearing lots of knocks recently.
“Finally, I’m starving!” Hanna exaggerated, faking a dramatic sigh and causing Silas to chuckle.
He opened the door and was met with the familiar Cardinal, smiling. Silas felt something warm bloom in his chest but decided to ignore it. “Hey, come in,”
“I just had to finish up some paperwork and send it to a higher-up… but I’m finished with work for now,” Copia explained, walking into his room.
Hanna stood up from her seat.
“Copia, this is Hanna. Hanna, this is Copia,” Silas introduced them.
“It’s nice to meet you, Hanna.” He held out his hand, and she shook it.
“Yeah, nice to meet you, too. Silas has told me a lot about you.” She smiled.
“Really?” Copia raised a brow.
Silas could feel his face heat up and he glanced away, sticking his hands in the pockets of his jeans and shrugging. “I wouldn’t say a lot…”
Hanna refrained from rolling her eyes. “You know what I mean…”
“Anyway.” He cleared his throat. “Is everyone ready for lunch?”
“Oh, yes. What were you thinking?” Copia asked.
“There’s this cafe place that opened nearby recently. I looked at the menu and thought it sounded good. Sandwiches, soups, things like that. If that’s alright with you guys?”
“I’ve been wanting to check out that place. Heard good things,” Hanna commented.
“Sounds good to me,” Copia agreed.
“Alright, great. So… how do we want to do this? Drive there separately? Or a car-pool situation…?” Silas asked.
“We could take one of the Ministry’s cars,” he suggested.
“Please don’t be like a church van situation…” Hanna thought, hoping her apprehension didn’t show on her face.
“Is that allowed?” Silas frowned slightly.
“Seeing as I’m in charge currently, mostly, I don’t see why not.” Copia shrugged.
“Oh, okay, cool. Let me get Blizzard in his house and then we can go.” He opened a box of dog treats that was on the counter and got a biscuit out.
“I thought Blizzard could free roam while you’re out?” Hanna pointed out.
“It’s a temporary situation until he gets more used to the new place. I don’t want anything happening to him or my room while I’m gone.” Silas explained, calling Blizzard over with the treat.
Copia smiled and waved at the dog while Silas led him to his crate. Blizzard listened and went inside, curling up on his pillow and blanket; chewing on the treat Silas gave him.
Silas went to wash his hands and dry them before grabbing his phone, keys, and wallet. “Alright, we can go now.”
---
“Do we want to take the new one?” Copia smiled and held up the keys. “It’s… um, a replacement for the one that Sister crashed…” He kicked loose gravel.
“Oh, hey, it’s an actual car… it’s nice.” Hanna raised her brows. “Wait, crashed?”
“What were you expecting? As for that, it’s a long story…” Silas’ lips pressed into a thin line.
She opened her mouth to speak before closing it, shaking her head. “Never mind. Doesn’t matter. I’ll sit in the back, you can sit up in the front with Copia.”
“You sure you’re alright sitting in the back by yourself?” He asked.
“Yeah, no worries.” She smiled.
Copia unlocked the car, and they got in. After the Cardinal made sure everyone had clipped in their seatbelts, he started the car and they began to head out. As expected, Silas sat up in the front next to Copia, giving him directions from his phone to the restaurant. Hanna kept her gaze focused on the window for the most part, chiming into conversations with them.
She smiled to herself when she noticed how carefree Silas was acting around Copia; occasionally chuckling at his jokes. She could sense it wasn’t just a polite act, it looked genuine; natural.
Once they arrived, Copia put the car in park and they stepped out, squinting from the bright sky. Silas held the door open for both of them and they walked inside, immediately being hit with the scent of coffee brewing and delicious food cooking. Silas pointed to a table near a corner and they each sat down.
“I was worried it might be full, but it looks like it’s just us and a couple of other people,” Silas said, quietly sighing in relief.
“It’s a nice break from the usual packed lunch room of the Ministry.” Copia smiled.
“At least you’re not covered in dog fur and stuff on your lunch breaks.” Hanna half-joked.
“Pretty sure Blizzard fills that fur quota for me.” He chuckled.
“Even I end up getting his fur on my clothes when I visit!” Copia pointed out. “I don’t really mind that much… he’s a very sweet dog.”
“Two words: lint-roller,” Hanna said. “Anyway, after we’re finished deciding what we want, I can go up and order it all for us, if you two would like.”
“Oh, really? Thanks.” Silas smiled.
“'Course, I know it can be difficult to go up and order,”
They pointed out what they wanted while Hanna wrote it down on the notes app on her phone. Easier than just remembering it all. Silas gave her a grateful look before she got out of her chair and left to order.
“It’s nice that Hanna offered to order for us,” Copia said.
“Yeah, it’s not that I can’t, it’s just… I don’t know.” He sighed.
“I get it. Though at least you’d probably fit in better. When you’re an Italian Cardinal here, you tend to… eh, stick out.”
“Maybe if you learned more Swedish.” Silas lightly teased.
“I know, I’m working on it.” He chuckled.
They both looked up as Hanna returned to their table.
“And now we wait,” she said, sitting back down.
“So, Hanna, Silas mentioned you work as a dog groomer…?” Copia asked, trying to start a conversation.
“Yes, I work at that one place you know, that’s downtown? Actually, I don’t know how you'd know, but anyway, I want to open my own place, eventually.” She explained.
“Oh, interesting. Did you always want to work in that business?”
“Well, I’ve always loved animals and dogs specifically, so I knew I wanted to work a job involving that, but I didn’t always know what kind of job,” she answered.
“When we were kids, she thought she wanted to be a vet, but then realized she couldn’t take the emotional toll,” Silas added.
“You wouldn’t be able to either.” She gave Silas a look.
“Oh, that would be tough… I already get anxious taking my rats to their check-ups.” He fidgeted with his hands.
“Oh, that’s right! Silas told me you had pet rats.” Her eyes lit up.
“Yes, I have three little sweethearts named Alessa, Bella, and Clara.” Copia beamed, talking about them as if they were his children.
Silas pulled out his phone and found a picture of them he had taken, showing it to her. Copia pointed out each one in the picture.
“They’re adorable. I honestly don’t have much experience with pet rats…” Hanna chuckled sheepishly.
“I get that they’re not for everyone. They take a lot of work, but it’s worth it.” Copia sighed.
“They love to give him a heart attack by jumping off high things. They think they’re little cats I guess.” Silas joked.
“It’s not funny, it’s scary!” Copia exclaimed before ultimately losing his serious expression. “Okay… I guess it’s a little funny…”
Hanna turned her head when she heard her name being called. “Oh, looks like our order is ready.” She left the table to get it.
“So… overall thoughts?” Silas asked in a hushed tone.
“I wish we could’ve done this sooner. Hanna is great. I can see why you two have been friends for so long.” Copia matched his tone and smiled.
Hanna came back with the tray of food and set it down in the middle of the table.
“Thanks for getting it, Hanna.” Copia gave her a polite nod.
“You’re lucky I came back and didn’t just decide to eat it all myself.” She kidded and sat down again.
Everyone took their plate and drink and began to eat, occasionally talking.
“So, you've known each other since you were kids, right?” Copia asked.
“Yep, practically grew up together like siblings, except for the long distances when we were apart, but that hasn’t been a problem in a long time,” Hanna explained.
“We met in a library and bonded over the Moomins. We used to joke that we were like Little My and Snufkin,” Silas added. “Uh… remind me to explain Moomins to you later.”
“Got it.” He smiled. “I understand the whole feeling like siblings bond. I had that with my brother figures growing up…” He glanced away for a second.
“Oh, nice,” she said. “What was it like growing up in a… ministry environment?”
“Um… well, it was interesting. I lived in the Ministry location in Italy for most of my life, then was placed here. Spent a lot of time reading in the library or exploring the building. There was always something to find.”
“Wow… I definitely can’t imagine living somewhere that big. I would’ve run around constantly.” Her eyes widened.
“Hanna, you did that anyway.” Silas pointed out.
“True. It used to drive my parents crazy.” She had a sheepish grin.
“Sometimes the Sisters would get onto my brothers and I about running around…” Copia fought the urge to chuckle. His smile slipped for a moment when he thought about them.
“Hey, you okay?” Silas asked, mild concern showing on his face.
Copia snapped out of it. “Yes, I’m just a bit tired, is all. Don’t worry.” He gave him a reassuring smile.
“I am too.” Hanna sighed. “There was this one dog at work, big fluffy guy, high energy. It was hard keeping him in the bath... but he looked very cute after he’d been cleaned and gotten his fur trimmed.” She had a small smile on her face.
“Wow… and here I thought that doing paperwork was hard.” Copia slightly joked.
“Oh, no, it is hard. Reading all of that stuff gets so confusing.” Her face scrunched up.
“You tend to get used to it.” He shrugged.
“Which is heavier? The stacks of papers you have to carry, or the dogs that Hanna wrangles into baths and up onto the grooming tables?” Silas asked rhetorically.
“To be fair, the papers can’t bite me.”
Hanna laughed, causing them to chuckle as well.
---
After their meal, they returned to the Ministry. Hanna said her goodbyes to them, hugging Silas and shaking Copia’s hand again. She didn’t forget to say goodbye to Blizzard as well, petting him briefly before leaving.
Copia had a little bit of time left before he had to start on his work again and decided to spend it sitting on Silas’ couch; talking with him while occasionally petting Blizzard, who lay curled up next to him.
“I thought that went well.” He had a small smile on his face. “Perhaps we could do it again soon.”
“Oh, of course. I’m so glad you and Hanna get along. Now I don’t have to worry about if my two best friends wouldn't like each other.” Silas sighed in relief.
“Was it a serious worry?” He tilted his head, lightly frowning.
“Not really. Hanna gets along with lots of people. It’s just one of those nerve things, you know.” He rested his face in the palm of his hand.
“Yeah, I understand. Again, thanks for inviting me to lunch with you two. Maybe at some point, I could even bring along some of the ghouls.” Copia thought aloud.
“Do they… need to eat?” He raised a brow.
“No, but they like the taste. Anyway, I’m sure they’d appreciate the gesture.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Silas nodded.
“I should probably get back to work… I enjoyed lunch.” Copia smiled.
Silas could’ve sworn he felt fluttery inside, or at the very least, his heartbeat quickened. “Yeah… I did too.” He smiled back.

Reginald Copperbottom is so well characterised for a guy who wasn't even named when back in the day?? He's an coward that'll turn tail and run the moment danger approaches. He'll give up the leadership of his entire organisation just to survive another day, but ALSO he'll give it up to anyone who truly proves their dedication to the clan. He'll rant and incite a revolution about honour and underhandedly kill someone out of spite (twice). He'll throw his gun to a stranger who's also wanted. He's definitely gay for his right hand man who he brought back from the dead. Do you see what I'm getting at here

“…Someone care to explain why Legend’s lying face down on the floor?” Warriors asks, raising his eyebrows as he enters the nurses’ break room.
“He went to get a snack but all they have is Pringles. He hates Pringles.”
A sorrowful moan rises up from the floor where Legend lays, and Warriors laughs.

You know. When i started playing skyrim, i expected to get stuff like exploring a vast open world for hours, long and useless fetch quests, a handful of funny glitches here and there, a decent storyline.....
In a way, i got all of that and yet. It gets boring pretty quickly and the worldbuilding is kinda lacking so i padded out the lore w my own headcanons and interpretations in the more important parts to entertain myself, but uh.
Is the intense and long lasting Cicero obsession supposed to be a part of the whole playing experience, too, or

for the prompts to shake things up: 21 with thb and/or anyone else you feel like from at the bureau, if you feel so inclined!
"so it was YOU who took a full bite out of that stick of butter!! please. please. why??" from this prompt list!
Taako can’t stand living with other people.
Eh, that’s a little harsh, he supposes. He can stand it just fine, he just hates it. That’s a little nicer. Probably.
It’s not so much the being around other people he hates, it’s the sharing of space. He’s very particular with how he thinks stuff should be arranged. That’s not such a bad thing, he thinks.
But the communal kitchen thing will probably kill him if it doesn’t kill a colleague first.
He swears he’s the only motherfucker on this moon who has any idea what food safety even is. Every single day he has to remind these dunces that meat can’t defrost on the counter and milk shouldn’t be stored in the door and that you shouldn’t eat two fucking deviled eggs that have been sitting out on a windowsill for gods know how long, are you actually a lunatic?
That’s why he takes advantage of the kitchen at, what some might call, whack ass hours. Nobody to bother him, nobody sniffing around his pots and pans, nobody trying to sneak a bite.
He doesn’t share food and nobody needs to know why.
He’s craving an omelet. A fancy one. One with potatoes. And spinach. And lots of goat cheese. And onions. And garlic.
He’s contemplating more components as he whips his eggs up. As he’s rummaging around one of the cabinets he’s charmed, he idly wonders whose bright idea it was to build a secret moonbase without decent storage in the living spaces. His hand closes around the cool metal of his nice copper pan and he does his best to extract it noiselessly.
He turns the burner on and looks around for his nice butter. They apparently like, sing to the cows or some shit. It’s one of the little luxuries he’ll indulge in since it just makes food taste so much better. When he pulls it out of the fridge, however, he’s horrified to see just how the damn stick’s been brutalized.
He can’t use the rest of the stick, the thought genuinely makes him want to gag. So now he’s out a nice breakfast and a few silver pieces.
Good thing he’s going to be so calm and normal about this butter abuse.
-
Attention all occupants of this dormitory, please make your way to the kitchen ASAP. Or else.
Taako, what are you—
All good here, Madam D, never you mind!
Taako, this is inappropriate use of Bureau—
The intercom cuts off abruptly. Even with having just met the guy, Magnus has a feeling that Taako means business and isn’t keen on waiting. Merle and Robbie stir and make their way to the elevator. On their way down to the kitchen, even more groggy Bureau members step onto the elevator.
Merle and Magnus find themselves quietly humming along to the tune.
They all find Taako standing in the dorm kitchen and scowling. He says nothing for a moment before marching up to Robbie. “Open your mouth.”
He looks down the line at other Bureau members. “Uh, wh—”
“Just show me your teeth and this will be painless,” Taako demands, clutching a stick of butter in other hand.
After a reasonable amount of hesitation, Robbie opens his mouth and grimaces, exposing his teeth.
Taako squints, looking from the butter to Robbie’s mouth and back to the butter. “Close it, you’re clean.”
“Taako, what’re you doing ‘sides freaking out Rusty here?” Merle asks.
“Uh my name’s actually Robbie,” Robbie clarifies before being waved off by Taako.
“Well, Merle, I was just trying to make myself a bangin’ breakfast. Big ol’ omelet with a ton of shit. But do you know what the first step of making an omelet is?” Taako paces up and down the line of Bureau members he’s assembled in the kitchen, smacking the stick of butter in his hand against his palm.
“Cracking some eggs?” Avi ventures. Taako glares at him.
“Cracking some eggs,” Taako repeats, “Is but one of many ‘first steps’ in making an omelet. Don’t ask how there are multiple first steps, I am a wizard and a chef, not a fucking scientist. But perhaps the most important step is putting a big knob of butter in the pan and letting it become nice and foamy. But I can’t do that today! And do any of you care to venture a guess as to why?”
He’s met with blank stares. Typical.
“It’s because one of you has decided to bite into my stick of butter with your gaping wide maw,” Taako hisses.
“Can’t you just like, transmute some more butter or some shit? That way you don’t have to interrogate us at ass-o’clock in the morning?” Killian says flatly.
It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment, but Taako’s jaw tightens and his eyes harden a little. Whatever comes out of his mouth next is going to be some evasive shit and Magnus knows it. And he’s not sure how.
“It’s about the principle of it all,” Taako deflects. That tracks.
“Wait, I thought we were calling her the Director, not the principal,” Merle interjects.
Taako casts him a withering glare. “Also, who has the spell slots to waste?”
Magnus grimaces and puts his hand up. “Hey, listen, Taako. Don’t be mad—”
“Probably gonna be mad now, my man.”
“—But it was me,” Magnus admits. “You can check it against my teeth or something.”
“I could cast Zone of Truth,” Merle offers.
“Eh, not so sure you should be wasting your spell slots. After all, they’re so helpful when you use them,” Taako says. “Why the actual shit have you done this?”
Magnus looks around sheepishly for a minute. “Well, I was eating this spicy soup, like really spicy, and my mouth was burning and you said that drinking milk straight from the carton was a no go but I also knew that dairy soothed mouth burn.”
Taako doesn’t say anything for a little while. He pinches the bridge of his nose and lets out a sigh that could extinguish a hundred years’ worth of birthday candles. “So instead of drinking milk straight from the carton, you decide to bite my stick of nice butter.”
Magnus nods.
“I hate the moon.” He tosses the stick of butter towards Magnus. “You’re all dismissed, except Magnus who is going to Fantasy Costco, replacing my butter, and dealing with that cat at the cash register.”

day 2
Twilight catches all the women
Crackfic?
YAS.
TW: beginning mentions drinking.
_____
Warriors led his comrades into the tavern. After a few long weeks of nonstop battles, it would be nice to stop once again. “Okay guys, go wild.” He sighed, “Except you, Wind. I don’t care what you did at the great sea as long as you’re in my Hyrule you cannot drink.”
“No fair!” Wind crossed his arms, “I have a higher alcohol tolerance than all of you!”
“That is the most concerning.” Twilight added. “I’ll pay tonight-“
“Woah, look at him.”
“I have always said strong men are my type.”
“I wonder if he’s single.”
The captain blushed at the compliments, “Ladies, I appreciate the flattery, but I’m only here for a night out.” He chuckles, “Maybe some other time though.”
The women looked confused, stared at each other, then stared back at the captain. Three seconds of awkward silence filled the room until one in a pink dress stood up.
“We’re not talking about you, we’re talking about him.” The woman dreamily pointed to the rancher, “Just look at those muscles.”
Warriors stared blankly at Twilight. He’s used to pulling the ladies. “I think you are mistaken, he’s taken by.. uh… someone.”
“No I’m not.” Twilight chimed in why do you have to have good hearing? “I’m happily single.”
“…Of course you are.” Warriors grumbled, “Well, if you’re so busy with women, I’ll just leave.” The unspoken, I’m supposed to pull the ladies here, not you. Hanged in the air.
“What’s gotten into him?” Sky asked, curious.
“I think someone is jealous that he isn’t the center of attention now.” Four looked up from his book, “Sucks to be him, a ladies man not pulling any. Must be tough.”
Time quickly stepped in, “Excuse me, miss, but I don’t think you should pull my son into a relationship when he’s clearly not thinking straight.”
“Old man, what-“
“Hush child. We’re going.”
“I’m not even a child-“

When I'm Alone with You - Chapter 15
Rating: Gen
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2k
Summary: Things have been out of sorts in the Ministry ever since Sister Imperator's accident.
Also Read on AO3
September
---
Copia was rushing around the Ministry even more so than usual. The Cardinal was trying to handle more work; taking multiple phone calls, going over the daily and weekly schedules for everything, stuff that Sister Imperator would’ve been in charge of. Or more accurately, in charge of telling others to do those tasks.
However, Copia preferred trying to handle most of it himself. Though Sister Imperator’s assistants were also helping, putting together a plan with Copia. The initial goal was to keep everything running as if nothing had happened. It was easier said than done.
Everything had fallen off routine ever since Sister Imperator had gotten into a car accident. She was currently recovering in a hospital, insisting on still taking some calls from her hospital bed. While Copia felt some minor relief that she wasn’t there currently to keep an eye on him, he also wasn’t enjoying the extra responsibility left in her absence.
After handling another stack of paperwork, Copia sighed and ran his hand through his hair; managing to catch his biretta before it fell off his head. He leaned on his elbows on his office desk, eyes scanning a to-do list. Copia jumped all over when the phone suddenly rang. He let out an annoyed huff and picked it up to answer it.
“Hello, Cardinal Copia speaking,”
Cardi, it’s me
Copia blinked. “Oh, Sister. How are you feeling?”
He could practically feel her annoyed glare through the phone.
“Right… still in the hospital. Well, I hope you’ll get better soon.” He cleared his throat.
Listen, I’m almost done handling some calls, but I am calling to tell you that I’ve told Papa Nihil that he’s in charge while I’m gone
Copia furrowed his brows in confusion. “But… I thought you told me to handle everything?”
Exactly, you’re in charge, he just thinks he is. I just told him that so he wouldn’t bother me about it. It gives him something to focus on
He refrained from sighing. So now he also had to distract the old man?
“Won’t he be asking to work on something?”
No, just keep giving him the usual unimportant paperwork. Even crossword puzzles tend to do the trick sometimes
Copia instinctively nodded.
“Is that all you wanted to tell me?”
Actually, I was going to say that because you are temporarily in charge during my absence, you’re allowed to choose someone to help you, along with the regular assistants, as you know
He squinted. “So they would be my temporary assistant?”
More or less
Copia thought it over, still feeling some confusion. “I could choose anyone?”
Yes, if they agreed to the promotion
“What would a promotion entail?”
That’s for me to inform them about
He frowned.
“But they can decline just like that if they don’t want it?”
Yes, nothing about their job as it is would change
Copia paused, thinking it through. He rolled a pen back and forth on the desk as he thought. He didn’t want to mess this up.
Have you made your choice?
Copia perked up again, forgetting he was on call. “Oh, um, yes, I think so.”
---
Silas worked on mopping the marble floors, almost reaching the end of one of the long hallways, when he felt his phone buzzing in his pocket. He furrowed his brows and frowned, pausing his mopping to take the phone out. His eyes widened when he read the name listed on who was calling him.
He didn’t waste any more time and answered. “Yes?”
Mr. Petersson
“Sister, I hope you have been healing well.” He swallowed nervously.
Even he knew that she had gotten into an accident. Though why was she calling him?
Thank you, you might be wondering why I am calling you
Silas stayed silent.
Well, as you may know, Cardinal Copia and my assistants have taken charge of the Ministry while I am away. While my assistants have been helping him, I told him that he could temporarily choose an assistant of his own… anyone to his liking
“Okay…” He raised a brow.
He informed me that he would like to promote you to that position
Silas blinked, mouth slightly agape before he closed it and cleared his throat. “But, I’m confused. I’m just a janitor.”
I know, but he insisted, if he trusts you then I’m sure you’d be up to it, however, you can always decline the offer
He paused.
“Could you explain what the promotion covers?”
While you would keep your usual maintenance work, you would also help the Cardinal with some of his extra responsibilities right now. Nothing too big, since he’s mainly covering it, delivering paperwork to and for him, tasks that he’d ask of you. But essentially you’d be paid a higher salary for these extra tasks
Silas processed her words. “How much of a pay increase?”
We can discuss that later if you’re still interested
He frowned and glanced away, still thinking. “So the benefit is more pay?”
No, I should’ve clarified. With more work, you can choose to stay here if you want
“Stay? What do you mean?”
You could move into the Ministry. We have plenty of rooms. You can choose the size you’re comfortable with, within reason. And no rent is necessary since you’re working for us
Silas lightly scoffed in disbelief and shock. “Really?”
Yes
“But this is a temporary position, you said, what will happen after you return?” He frowned.
You can still keep living here, and if we decide to split ways one day, you’ll get an extended amount of time to figure out where else to move. You don’t have to leave until you’re completely settled elsewhere
“Okay, but I have a pet dog…”
You’re not the only employee here with a pet. Pets are allowed, only if you follow the rules. Keep the dog in your room and take it outside on a leash when necessary
He immediately remembered Copia's rats. Though a big dog was different than three tiny rats.
“I wouldn’t have to… convert or anything, right?” He tried to balance his phone between his shoulder and head while he mopped.
No, we respect the right of people to choose what they believe. You won’t be required to attend any service or other religious teachings
This sounded almost too good to be true, but if Copia thought the job would suit him…
“I would like all of this in writing.” He requested.
I’ll have my assistants get to work on it, but, does this mean you accept?
Silas paused. Normally, he wasn’t such a spontaneous person, but maybe this could be a good opportunity.
“I’d like to have time to think it over if that’s all right.” He chewed on his bottom lip.
Of course, you have until the end of the week
After they said their professional goodbyes, Silas hung up and placed his phone back in his pocket. He took a breath and decided to finish his mopping before leaving to find Copia.
After placing his mop back in the closet, he stretched, feeling his hips and knees pop. Silas glanced down at the floor, slightly seeing his reflection. Did he see worry on his face? Or just general unsureness? After a moment, he looked back up, took a breath, and wandered down the halls to Copia’s office.
---
After knocking, Silas heard Copia say ‘come in’ and he slowly opened the door. Copia leaned forward and smiled when he saw him.
“Silas, hey! I was wondering when I’d see you today. After… everything.” His smile turned to a nervous one.
Silas kept his calm demeanor, not appearing any different to the Cardinal.
“Could I sit down?” Silas asked.
Copia blinked for a second before stammering and gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. “Oh, oh, yes, of course, yeah.”
He sat down, keeping his hands in his front pockets. “So… Sister Imperator called me about some promotion…” He glanced away for a second before back up at him.
Copia inconspicuously tugged at his cassock collar. “Yes…”
“You chose me…? Why?” Silas’ calm expression broke for a second, showing complete earnestness instead.
“Well, Sister told me I could choose whoever I wanted, and I really wanted you by my side… to work! Work side-by-side.” He corrected. “I thought you’d be good for the job, and honestly, you don’t have to do much extra stuff. I like handling it myself.”
He thought over his words for a moment. Finally, Silas raised a brow, putting it together in his mind. He gave him a slightly teasing smile. “Did you want your friend to have an official excuse to hang out with you during work hours?”
Copia looked like a deer in the headlights.
“I, um… well, I… maybe…?” He stuttered, fidgeting with his hands.
Silas chuckled, causing Copia to snap out of his nervousness somewhat.
“Copia, it’s okay. Honestly, I’m honored you thought of me. It’s… nice.” Silas ignored the heat he felt on his face.
“Oh… oh, okay.” He clasped his hands, glancing down. “Sister Imperator didn’t tell me all of the details, but did it sound like a good deal?” He looked at him.
“I still have the end of the week to decide, but I’m thinking of saying yes. I still want to go over it with Hanna, though, get an outside perspective,” Silas explained.
Copia nodded. “That makes sense. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you.”
Silas smiled. “Thank you.”
---
Copia woke up with a groan, rubbing his eyes. His alarm hadn’t even gone off yet, but he heard some ruckus coming from outside his room. He reluctantly sat up and stretched, pulling back the covers and putting on his robe and slippers.
He opened his door, leaving a small crack as an opening, enough to peek out. There he saw Silas, moving some boxes.
Copia gasped and closed his door again, immediately hurrying to get dressed, comb his hair, and apply his makeup. He decided on some casual wear, just a button-up and slacks, but he felt naked without his Ministry makeup and gloves.
He opened his door again, closing it behind him. He watched as Silas continued to move boxes into his new room. It was across from his room, slightly down the hall after some doors. They were still in the same dorm section.
Copia walked down the hall, getting Silas’ attention.
“Aren’t you up early, though that might be my fault… sorry.” Silas winced. “I was trying to keep quiet.”
“No, you didn’t wake me.” He lied. “What are you doing here so early?”
“I was finishing up moving into my new room. It’s actually a little bit bigger than my old apartment! Blizzard is waiting at Hanna’s place until it’s completely ready,” Silas explained.
Copia should've realized, knowing it had been about two weeks since that talk. Though perhaps his brain wasn't fully awake quite yet. He watched for a moment as Silas kept lifting and moving boxes, noticing he was already getting tired.
“Do you need help?”
Silas looked at him again, a small smile slowly showing on his face. “Yes, please.”
He smiled as well and began helping him move in. After a while of moving boxes in, they moved on to opening and putting stuff away. Copia worked on passing objects to Silas. As they worked together, Copia couldn’t help but look around while he passed stuff to him.
The room was decorated with stuff he mainly expected. Lots of potted houseplants, a shelf with well-worn books clear by the book spines. As well as a few stones and rocks placed as decoration. Silas had gotten the place ready quicker than he’d thought.
“So… is this how your old place looked?” He asked.
“Um… pretty much, the layout isn’t that different, actually. As for the decorations and furniture, it’s the same, obviously. I didn’t go out and buy all new stuff.” He chuckled near the end.
Copia smiled. “Good, I hope you’ll like staying here.”
“I think I will… and if anything goes south, my old landlord was fairly generous surprisingly, so I should be able to get my old apartment back, or at least one in the same building. And if that doesn’t work out, I know Hanna would let me crash at her place until I figured it out. Or hey, I could even stay with some relatives here. Y’know, backup plans.” Silas worked on folding and breaking down boxes as they finished up.
The Cardinal nodded. “Yes, that’s good. You have everything figured out.”
Silas dusted his hands, sighing from finishing the work. He sat down on his couch. Copia stood awkwardly for a minute before deciding to sit down in a chair close by.
Silas looked at him before glancing away, hoping Copia didn’t notice how his eyes looked over his different clothes. Really, his outfit wasn’t that different from his uniform, with similar long sleeves and still appropriate for an office. The only main difference was his slacks. Copia always wore his cassock.
“We should probably get ready for work now…” Silas muttered, looking down at his hands and feeling a strange form of butterflies in his stomach.
“After we just worked?” Copia joked, causing him to chuckle.
“Well, at some point today we should go work.” Silas leaned his head back on the couch.
“Yeah… I know,” he said.
They sat in silence for a moment, taking a well-deserved rest from their work.
“We’re going to be roommates… in a way,” Copia spoke.
Silas lifted his head to look at him. “I hadn’t thought of it like that. Hmm… roommates.” He tested the word out.
“Are you happy about it?” Copia said in a quiet tone.
He smiled. “Yeah. You?"
Copia nodded.

I think that I struggle to write L because I don't know who he is beneath his masks.
Light is the protagonist, the main character, we see every decision he makes and get the reasoning behind them—his personality and mental facilities are an open book to the audience, even as he's shown to be someone who hides himself away constantly.
L is the same in that way, but we don't have that glimpse behind the curtain we do with Light. L being unknowable is what makes him so intimidating as an antagonist; you never know what he's going to do next, and you never know his true reasons for doing what he does unless someone else figures it out first. He's a big fat liar, just like Light, but unlike Light, we never get to see him be completely honest with someone.
I can write L's masks with ease, but ask me to get inside his head and give you his thoughts? I have NO fucking clue what's going on in there man.
Just like I feel like I can write Light's honest thoughts and personality with ease, but struggle a bit to write his false faces seen by someone else—it's a matter of perspective.

I want to write a fan fiction about how the Pringles man and papa Louie from the papas games are brothers, and how they were going to be the next big thing but then the Mario brothers came along and they were forgotten.
They go their separate ways and later in life we find papa Louie, who has started a very successful chain of restaurants and cafes and the sort, all starting from a simple pizza shop, the older, lesser known brother, the Pringles man who I will name ‘bill’ for the time being, is just starting a big new thing, layered chips in a can with many different flavours, “Pringles”, he names them after the families last name, (he is bill Pringles and his brother is Louie Pringles) but with his brothers success he is finding it difficult to get his product out, so he asks some bad people to help him and give him money to get his business more popular.
A few years later the Pringles business is going well and the papas chain restaurants are still successful, but the two brothers haven’t contacted each other for years, being busy with everything, Louie only calls him every once in a while to wish him a merry Christmas or a happy birthday and tells him how proud he is of him for starting his business with the family name, although these calls always get sent to messages, messages which are often ignored.
Then one day, the bad people bill talked to to help him with his money and business problem come to collect his overdue dept, and accidentally mistake papa Louie for the Pringles man, and kidnap him. Bill, who has cared about his brother all this time has to bring himself to rescue him from these people.
I believe this should be turned into a video game, a movie franchise and a bunch of action figures and other marketable stuff.

I used to humble-brag that I can spend over eight consecutive hours writing and forget to eat.
"That's really cool," said many people in the United States.
I felt good about this, so one day, I decided to impress my brand new therapist.
