now that it's been five months, can I point out something really funny that I don't think anybody noticed?
so you may remember that round 2 was notorious for the voter fraud that happened in blackbonnet vs stucky. some people (on both sides!) found the whole thing hilarious; some people (again, on both sides!) got really, really unreasonably angry.
the graph looked like this. now, that's a very sudden and noticeable spike there at the end; this was definitely a coordinated effort and it was definitely to some degree fraud. there's screenshots of a job listing on sproutgigs to prove it.

but look at the rest of the graph. that's fairly natural-looking— no enormous spikes, no stopping and starting. there's bumps, of course, because sometimes you get reblogged by someone with lots of followers, and there's upsets, but there aren't cliffs. for the most part, except for that sudden bend at the end, this is pretty normal voter behavior.
people joked about the fraud in this poll for weeks afterwards. "hey, where's the award for most voter fraud?" people said.
well.
the award for most voter fraud does not go to stucky vs blackbonnet. it goes to this absolute fucking nonsense:

like, look at that. look at those long stretches where almost nobody was voting crimeboys. look at the sudden jumps, and look at how suddenly they end. in the earlier sections you can see the little pauses where whoever was frauding took a break to rest their wrists and get a snack.
I don't know what I think the takeaway here is. you could say this is a story about how accusations of voter fraud don't track voter fraud, they track controversy. you could say this is a story about how if you don't have a graph right in front of you, it is significantly harder to identify voter fraud than you think it is. both of those are even true.
but personally, I like to look at it as a post about how if you really try, you can chart human passion. and I think that's beautiful.

Love how Lucifer just manhandles Adam during their 'fight' despite everyone else getting their asses kicked. Plus him effortlessly destroying him when Charlie's in danger is really sweet.

we spent the whole season building up alastor as this massive powerhouse, eldritch, nobody messes with him. Only one who tried picking a fight with him (Vox) got utterly humiliated and everyone else was clearly outclassed. Except for Lucifer where Alastor merely just went with annoying instead of power challenging. Like we got vibes okay yeah makes sense that the King of Hell isn't intimidated by anyone, even if it's alastor, but Alastor got TWO wtf moments in Dad Beat Dad one with Husk and one with defending the hotel
other than that, it was pretty much, nobody messes with him cuz he will mess you up

and he fights Adam evenly sorta for a bit before Adam pulls out the "I'm an angel which is stronger than any demon" card and alastor gets his ass handed to him.

Like what a way to set up how strong ADAM is, having him beat Alastor. And then no one else in the hotel is as strong as Alastor was, so everyone's struggling. Charlie at least gets one good hit in but her inexperience kicks her in the ass and then Lucifer just shows up and

like hot DAMN that was just one hit! He broke Adam's mask, the force was enough to send him FLYING across the roof top, and bounce so hard against the billboard he BROKE THE SKYLIGHT
That was just a "HANDS OFF MY BABY" warning too, like LOOK at that face, that's not a "fight me" face it's a "if you touch my baby again, I will screw you so bad your bones will need therapy and you never recover"

and then yeah, Lucifer was NOT taking the fight with Adam serious at all, like the dude was taunting him, mocking him, dodging all of his attacks, just shapeshifting like Adam was a joke LIKE LOOK AT THIS

And somehow my favorite part wasn't even watching Lucifer go absolute ham on Adam, it was that even at his absolute most rage fueled moment, snarling like a beast where he was going to and fully intended on making good on his threat about messing with his baby

just one shoulder touch from Charlie and he's immediately chill. Like it's instantaneous, like how much do you love someone to be able to be absolutely livid, about to incinerate someone levels of rage only to immediately be "o oki! No more violence!" the second that person touches you???
Ugh I love them so much! Like everything about that fight, but especially how Lucifer can just go from absolutely the most dangerous person in one second and then OWO SOFT the next just by looking at Charlie
oops this post got long... IMSORRYYYYY other than "More than Anything" and the phonecall with charlie this is one of the scenes I replay the most, I love them so much

absolutely the least subtle of the group
sure the rest of skz knows that he's seeing someone but they respect that he hasn't brought you around the chaos yet
it's not until he name drops you when half asleep do the rest of the boys start teasing him
instantly regrets speaking and tries to bury himself in the couch to hide from the jokes
he'll bring it up to you eventually, almost nervously
"so i was thinking, it's time you met the other's" and you're supportive of the idea. only ever wanted to do things at his pace
you can't hide that you're just as nervous to meet them because if they don't like you what's to say that won't stop the relationship?
thankfully they like you and are welcoming to you when you come by for dinner
seungmin jokingly calls you "mom" one day and now they won't stop with the parent jokes
next step is introducing you to the world but the boys are protective and help keep your relationship private
(they go to ridiculous lengths to make this happen and at one point you have to convince them that JYP knows about you and no one is breaking rules, just that you want to stay out of the public eye for now while you can)
MINHO
you were more nervous meeting his cats (who love you by the way and you get daily pictures of the three from his parents)
oh yeah, you met his parents too and they loved you
he wasn't reluctant to introduce you to skz but he wasn't making it happen fast either. "the longer i can keep you to myself, the better" was always his excuse and you don't argue because it's true
stay ends up learning about you first (by accident) when you're visiting his parents and he posts a photo of you cuddled asleep with the cats
he did it without thinking, just captioning it something vague and cute on the official instagram
chan takes it down quickly but not fast enough and there are already screenshots
you end up meeting the rest of them through video call when chan calls minho to tell him what happened
once it's clear you're not upset at all, you're invited (read: demanded) to the dorms to meet the rest of them when the break is over
minho pretends to grumble that his perfect secret is blown and that he's going to have to share you now because they'll all love you
spoiler alert: he was right
CHANGBIN
i don't think this man knows the meaning of subtle or private if a dictionary was thrown at him
the second you two make anything official he's asking you to come by the dorms and hang out, to come with him to the gym when he's home to spend more time with him
he can't get enough of being around you and that translates to the rest of skz knowing about you pretty early on
the hard part is keeping your relationship private from people outside of the group
he has almost name dropped you so many times during interviews or tours that it's becoming a running joke among the boys who is on "binnie's big mouth duty" that night
it takes the whole group to keep him from saying something that would give you two away
HYUNJIN
while chan and changbin might be the least subtle, hyunjin is easy to tell something has changed
he's singing certain songs with more energy
his personal instagram posts are very boyfriend coded but he doesn't really say or do anything specific
there's a lot of speculation that he might be seeing someone
you're actually the one to blow it
you were just going to drop something off in the dorm while everyone was at practice (he'd cleared it with security and you had your own code specifically for visits without him)
what you didn't expect was han standing in the kitchen half dressed and a tooth brush in his mouth
he screamed, you screamed, he screamed again, security came to the rescue
you're trying to explain who you are until you pull out your phone and call your boyfriend
"han is here and i scared him and now security is kicking me out i just wanted to leave you a present on your bed im so sorry"
you have to switch to video call to prove that you're talking to hyunjin and that yes, you're his s/o and allowed to be there so security lets you back in with apologies
safe to say you don't do the surprise visits in case you give jisung another heart attack
JISUNG
when i say this boy was stressed about it, he was stressed out by you meeting his friends
you had teased him endlessly about how his true soulmate is minho and he's kind of scared that once you meet them you'll think you're not good enough and leave him
so it takes a lot of talks to get him okay with introducing his favorite person in the world to them
you suggest that instead of meeting them all at once to do it one-by-one in whatever order is the most comfortable with him
which makes you wonder if you're going to meet minho first or last
you're surprised however when you meet him first and ji is anxious the whole time
until both you and minho reassure him that it's okay and that because you and him love jisung that why wouldn't they get along
and you do (so much that minho is almost your bff) which is a relief to him
you end up meeting chan and changbin last which you realize is because of how much he really respects their opinions
he's still a little anxious sometimes when you hang out with the whole of skz at once, fearing that the chaos will chase you off but he realizes he has nothing to worry about when you feed that chaos
FELIX
you two made a whole plan of how to introduce you to the rest of the guys
mostly because you wanted it to go perfectly even if he assured you it would no matter what
he helps you get into the dorms right after everyone has left so you can set up snacks and games to have a game night and get to know everyone
he was supposed to be the first one through the door so when you almost throw yourself at changbin instead of your boyfriend you're mortified
they don't let you live that down but it was an effective way to break the ice and it gets everyone laughing right away
the small hiccup passed, you're trying to impress the others as much as you can because you know they mean so much to felix
chan eventually gets you alone in the kitchen to ask if you're okay and you confess in one breath how anxious you are for them to like you
chan assures you that no one could hate you, you're basically felix in another person and they can all see how he looks at you
another situation where the boys are super protective of you two and your privacy, helping to keep you out of public eye as much as possible
SEUNGMIN
literally no one knew this man was seeing anyone until you just showed up to the dorm one day?
truly one of those types who has the private life thing down and while he shares most of his life with skz, he hasn't ever shared your existence with them
that was an agreement you both came to when things were getting serious and you two like having this whole separate life with each other away from everyone else
they're all confused who he's invited to dinner (he's been so picky about the foods and made sure that only your favorites are made)
truly no one knew about you at all, he wasn't any different but when you're around there is a whole other side of seungmin that the boys are shocked by
until you roast him just as hard as he does the others and oh now they see why you two are perfect for each other
they're not really convinced you two are together until you kiss him goodnight at the door and when he turns around he's so pink in the face and biting his lips to keep from smiling
you two are probably the only ones that are able to keep your relationship out of the public eye for so long until seungmin drops one day that he's a dad?????
JEONGIN
he loves teasing about your existence to the others
like you're aware of what he's doing and you think it's funny
"oh just texting my s/o" like the most casual sentence ever that leaves everyone just looking around confused
never once says your name but will bring you up anytime it's natural
he does this so much and it's so normal that he does it on stage during their unscripted part and it takes too long to realize what happened
seungmin realizes first and starts laughing, telling the others while jeongin realizes what he did
you two have talked about revealing your relationship for a long time but the teasing of it was too much fun
so you end up being introduced to skz at the same time that stay learns about you
(you were backstage at the show with the staff. after clearing the idea with staff, you're dragged out on stage hand-in-hand with jeongin)
to say the boys flip when they realize it's you is ridiculous because you've been on so many schedules and shows that they never realized you were right under their nose
that was part of the fun of it to you two but even with that part over you two will still find ways to tease the members together

The thing about morality is that it only matters when it's real. Discussions of rules or norms for what is right or wrong are almost always, at some level, illusions, approximating reality and guiding decisions in an uncertain world - which does not make them useless, just contextual. Profaning god in your bedroom can never be “wrong” - there is no one to hear you, no one to be hurt by it. You can only show something is really wrong from the intentions of the actions and their results.
So with that out of the way, lets talk about Knives Chau - and specifically, how the comic vs the anime handled that part of the story.
Scott Pilgrim vs The Reification of Dating a High Schooler
There is an extremely pervasive meme in Scott Pilgrim discourse that our titular Scott is a scumbag. Our returning whipping boy the Kotaku article loves this idea, describing Scott’s “detestable behavior” and wondering “was it too subtle the first time about Scott being an absolute shitbag?”. There is this viral headline screenshot from an interview floating around right now riding that same line:

Which is, of course, pretty much false. Its up to you in the end, “shitbag” is a subjective description, but the story just isn’t about events that would be described that way. Its the story of a guy getting over an awful ex, hurting some people, then meeting a new person, and realizing step-by-step what it takes to be their partner and levelling up as a person each time he does. He starts off broken, and Ramona of course is just as broken - getting better is their mutual arc. And its fundamentally about relationship drama - those stakes don’t make you a scumbag lol, just clueless, unless you are terminally online and don’t know what real stakes are.
I will let O’Malley get the last word in with his quote the writer of that interview is hilariously trying to torture into his headline:
There's a bit of, like, young people see Scott Pilgrim a certain way, and, you know, there's a lot of, like, 18-19-year-old fans that are really judgmental of the character. They're like, "Oh, he's a bad person. I would never do that." But I always tell them, like, get back to me when you're 25 or 30, tell me how your 20s went. Were you a bad person? Everyone has to make choices and do things in life that maybe they're not going to be proud of later.
Scott is a scumbag the way everyone is - you yourself will likely commit similar sins; that at least seems to be the authorial intent, and I agree with it.
So how does dating Knives Chau slot into this?
Despite the memes, age, in fact, is just a number - two consenting people dating does not a sin make. The reason dating underage people is bad is because of its consequences, not the categorical imperative. So what are the consequences of dating Knives Chau in the comic?
Knives is, as a consequence of dating a guy who is simply via his age able to appear so much cooler than her peers to her, absolutely obsessed with Scott. She worships his band:

She starts aping his taste in music and interests; she slots herself into his circle of friends, who don’t relate to her, even after their breakup (often drinking her way through it):

She totally spirals after he cheats on her and leaves her, blaming everyone but him; she is wounded and hurt for months, a year, over a relationship that lasted weeks:

Knives Chau is a literal poster child for why you should not date a high schooler. She is, at every turn, emotionally not ready to date someone who is not at her own level of social development, and is deeply affected by it. It is, sometimes, played for laughs - that is the nature of the comic, everything is played for laughs, but I would have given it a bit more dramatic space myself - but over the course of the story Scott himself realizes how much of an ass he was to her, and how he didn’t take what happened seriously.
The reason I view this with charity is what Scott did to lead to this - he met a cute girl on the bus! He was deeply hurt and kind of numb in life, and found someone who was safe and easy to talk to. He never attempts to kiss her (she starts trying to kiss him which he repeatedly rejects) they don’t even hold hands, and it lasted a few weeks. He knew deep down, pretty much immediately, it was fake:

Then he met an actual person he liked, and with some browbeating from Wallace agreed to break up with her, but chickened out for a day. Then the next day he decides to break up with her, and she drops the L bomb before he can, so he instantly ends it. It is really awkward for everyone involved.
Pushing off an awkward and uncomfortable conversation resulting from a dumb decision you made on a whim for a week - god I relate to that, that’s everyone! If you think it isn’t you I think you're lying. Its why this relationship is so interesting in the comic - Scott is always one step removed from it, putting it at abeyance, and the fact that something so minor to him is so destructive to her is a really good portrait of how these kinds of things happen. Its so easy to hurt someone when you don’t even know what the stakes are, and when its coming not from malice, but from weakness. Its a very good portrayal of a bad relationship because its bad in a relatable way, even if as a story is a bit more dramatic than is typical. And its a great portrayal of how fraught age gaps can be - this bad relationship is part of what makes the comic a good story.
But its 2023, we don’t give a shit about any of that anymore!
O’Malley in the same interview discusses the cultural shift around these kind of relationships:
I felt like in this day and age, I had to provide clarity on that [relationship]. Because when I wrote the first books, I took it for granted that people would understand that dating a high schooler was a bad thing. But on the internet, in this day and age, people are like, "He's dating a high schooler. That's terrible!" Like, that's pretty much what I say on page 1 of the book. But I try to spell it out a little bit more this time.
He isn’t telling the full story though - it was bad in 2004, but not bad the way it is today. Its dubiousness was mitigated by its frequency; people were doing this kind of shit all the time. Scott Pilgrim is a bass guitarist in an indie band; fucking groupies is like built into the cover charge. Half the problem Scott has in dating Knives is that she is the wrong kind of 17-year-old - had Scott met her at 1 am in the aftermath of a Born Ruffian’s concert at the Whippet Lounge knocking down shots off the back of her fake ID, no one would have even noticed. Hell, no one does notice; there is someone who actually makes out with a drunk 17-year-old Knives Chau in the comic Scott Pilgrim, and isn’t Scott Pilgrim:

No one cares about Kim’s inebriated petting session here; that is 10% because she is a Girl and Girls Can’t Be Predators, 40% because she isn’t the main character, and 50% because Kim Pine’s dating history is not a useful proxy battleground for GamerGate-adjacent nerd culture wars in ~2014; but that is road that goes directly to hell, so let's veer back.
The point, of course, is that in 2004 this is a crime flecked with normality, something your friend would do and you would maybe just cock an eyebrow at:

Its not that in discourse today - it is radically more condemned. It is not a contextual sin, but an original sin. It underwent a process I am calling reification - where it goes from being just a shifting descriptor of reality, to a thing in itself, with a defined (reified) meaning. And to be clear, that is in a lot ways on net a good thing? The reality is that, despite everyone’s protestations, there are today thousands of 17-year-olds taking the L line out to a gig at the Brooklyn Steel and going down on a 25-year-old guy they just met in a back alley off Frost St who swears he’s a “drummer in a sick new band” that played here “just last week”, he promises, and she is having a great time, bragging to her friends about how hot his tattoo was, and then shipping herself off to Cornell next year to start on her pre-med track with barely a memory. But for every dozen of those, there is at least one person who is deeply, deeply hurt, a Knives Chau who never deserved this. The rest can have a slightly worse time, its probably worth it.
That does not make it a categorical imperative, though - the reification has masked that truth. The crime comes from the context - those other girls aren’t victims, they would laugh at you for suggesting they were. But in 2023, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is no longer concerned with context. It is telling you, right to your face, that Scott is a bad dude. Over and over and over - jokes from the Evil League about “wow, I thought we were evil”, its not subtle.
Yet meanwhile, Knives Chau is, like, fine? She dates Scott, is totally into him, and then literally in the middle of his funeral forgets about him for Envy crashing it:

Picks up the bass and has yuri-inflected playtime with Kim the literal next day:

And less than a week later is pitching an off-broadway musical adaption of Scott’s life to a billionaire Matthew Patel - I can’t explain that okay, I’m as confused as you are.
She is mad at Scott, sure, but she is over it in a matter of days. Hell, notice how she was already a fan of the Clash at Demonhead now? There is no scene of Scott introducing her to his kind of music. He didn’t change her. By the end she is a member of his band and they are totally chill:

This is, again, about a week or two later.
Knives is not an important character in this show, way less than in the original, this is no grand sin. But I still find it very interesting: O’Malley is wrong. He “spells it out” way less in this version when it comes to the actual consequences of Scott’s actions. Everyone’s verbal condemnations are substitutes to replace the real damage his actions dealt in the comic. Scott is a better person this time, in a world that has universally agreed he is worse (still not a good move ofc). Even Scott’s moment of apology to Knives about their dating is so tepid its almost Straussian:

Its ‘frowned upon’…which is not the same thing as saying it was wrong! I don’t think this is intentional, its just funny, but its a nice capstone nevertheless.
And it had to be this way, not just for media in general, but for Scott Pilgrim in particular. Not only are sexual crimes far more reified today, but Scott Pilgrim’s sin of dating a high schooler is reified as well - its the first piece of discourse everyone encounters about it. Its the ur-debate of the franchise. The idea of actively engaging on this point, and digging deeper into it…its too hot, too controversial. Way better to shy away from it, disown it. The discourse wrote this part of the script over the course of a decade; its not something the creatives had any say in.
Honestly they should have just gone all the way - just make Knives 19. Then how tepid it is wouldn’t be a distraction anymore. Scott can just be an asshole for cheating on her, that would work fine. If you aren’t going to commit to the reality of these things, you shouldn’t bother with it at all.

the pjo show’s cinematography is so warm and homey and clever and detail-oriented so i wanna compile a few of my favourite still shots because why not??

^this one had me smiling so hard, not because it’s a particularly beautiful shot but the framing of the three is so well done. the focus is on sally who is talking to grover (both prominently in the front of the shot) while percy – who isn’t a part of the conversation but a listener of it – is still properly visible through the glass of the door and like??? i just think it’s a super cool way of having a passive character in the shot that i haven’t ever seen before, in a way that percy is both highlighted and still so clearly in the background that it doesn’t take away from the focus characters. also percy’s sweater matching the colours on the door is the cherry on top!!

^next is this one. it’s so perfectly angsty and though not complete, the symmetry is still eye-catching. it encapsulates the feeling percy must experience in that moment–him, amidst destruction, knowing he’s the cause but not knowing how or why. he looks all of twelve with his haphazard hoodie and almost forlorn look. he is not gloating, he is not cheerful. though he doesn’t know the gravity of his parentage, it’s almost like the show is telling us that his powers–which cause the door to break, too btw–will always be a source of isolation for percy. he is a force of nature, a destructive one most of the time, and the fact that he is just a child who is confused will never matter because this world doesn’t care for childhood but godhood alone.
idk, this shot just evokes a very unsettling kind of sadness for me. i think it’s beautifully framed.

^i absolutely love this one simply for the fact that the sheer struggle of the fight is so prominently visible. and yes, i cheated, this isn’t exactly a still shot but like an action sequence screenshot but whatever, it’s too good to not mention it here. the way percy is, honest to gods, bracing against the spear for his dear life, the evident and overwhelming rage on clarisse’s face, the blocking of the scene – it’s perfect. clarisse is not playing and percy is genuinely in danger and i love how this shot and the whole scene really sold us on that fact.

^ i just think it’s extremely cool that we can see the minotaur howling in pain, percy having his mouth wide open as if he’s letting out a yell as he goes to plunge the horn and that as percy does this act–killing the minotaur–which is surefire source of safeguarding himself and grover, something that will get him to camp, we can see thalia’s tree in the background. there is no reason percy had to make the kill here, with the chaos of the fight, so the fact that this is the spot and this is the shot as he kills the minotaur makes me think it’s deliberate. having thalia in the background is so impactful because again, percy could have met a similar fate in some other alternate universe but here, he wins and he survives.

^ do i even need to explain??? the shot is pretty and beautiful and almost magical. percy, alone with a tin of fire, burning blue food and talking to his mother. maybe one thing i can point out is that the sally-percy bond has been heavily indicated through glowing lights since the start. if you recall, the “you are not broken” speech by sally was given in front of the warm, glowing headlights of the car and percy’s face was illuminated by that warmth just the same way it is illuminated by the tin-fire in the forest.

^ first, this is too fucking gorgeous. second, percy is wearing his red jacket again and this dream happened after he reached camp so in my opinion, this dream was initially a comfortable imagining of percy’s mind and was then hijacked by kronos but i could be wrong since i don’t clearly remember how they manifested in the books originally. nevertheless, it’s a great detail to have him wear the red jacket because even if he may not have it with him anymore, it’s still clearly something he holds dear – and might associate sally’s memories with.
also, the fact that percy seems to have alot of scenes with fire might be because as someone who can control water, fire can never truly be a source of danger for him and therefore, he can find comfort in its warmth unhindered, always?

^ how could i not love this epic moment? the trident is perfect, big and blue and grand and majestic. half the screen is water, obviously. but what makes this good shot a great one is that there is literally no one else directly near percy except annabeth. the campers are all far away and in this shot itself only annabeth remains close to percy, though she is fittingly on the land, observing the scene before her. remember how i said percy’s legacy promises isolation but this shot tells me that despite that, percy will have someone who he can count on to be by his side (also cool that even in the bathroom, annabeth was technically still near him, even if she was, well, stalking him) and maybe this is my delusional ass talking, but annabeth being here is foreshadowing for me. i just think it’s a choice to have this epic revelation where they could easily have had percy standing alone in the middle of the lake but no, annabeth is also there and not only because she’s the one who led to that revelation but because she’s someone who isn’t intimidated by percy’s parentage and still can be beside him.

^ i adore this shot because 1) it shows us just how young and tiny percy is and 2) it tells us that maybe that door is so fucking huge because it’s being inclusive of centaurs and other giants of their world. also, symmetry strikes again!!! the colours are so well balanced, not bright and vibrant but on the pastel side that indicates an aged feel to them.

as you helped chris with his homework, he couldn't help but stare like he always did. you've been his tutor for about two weeks, and chris is sure he's in love. he stares at your glossy pink lips as they move, wanting so badly to suffocate you with his. what's a pretty girl like you wasting your time on someone like him anyway? not that he's complaining, he loves having you all for himself for a short amount of time everyday after school.
but he can't help wanting more.
is that weird? maybe. however, you wouldn't think so. you've had a crush on chris forever which is 3/4 of partially the reason you started tutoring in the first place. you think he's the absolute coolest and you're giddy whenever you're getting ready to see him.
"no.. but you're kinda close!" you look at one of his answers from yesterday's homework. he furrows his brows as chews on the back of your pen, forgetting that it's not his. you watch his lips wrap around the top of the pen, feeling mesmerized.
"yn? you okay?" you look up at the boy, still in a daze. you see him swallow, his adam's apple bobbing. you lick your lip swiftly before coming back down to earth. "yeah, sorry, just a little tired i guess." you smile. he holds back a smirk. he may be stupid in school, but he's extremely intelligent when it comes to you.
however, he just nods. "we can take a break." he shrugs, getting bored of this subject anyways. he’d much rather learn about you. you agree, putting your mechanical pencil down. he leans back in his chair, stretching out his muscles. he wasn’t even trying to show off, but you just happen to suck in a breath, mentally taking a screenshot of him.
“d’ya want some water or something? you hungry?” he asks politely. you stand up out of your chair. “it’s okay, i can get some.” your hand lightly brushes his shoulder as you walk out of his bedroom.
you head downstairs to the kitchen where you pour yourself a glass of water. matt’s sitting at the counter on his laptop, doing homework as well, you assume. after a few seconds, you hear, “he’s too pussy to ask you out himself,” matt starts out of nowhere. you turn around confused, full glass in hand.
you’re about to mutter a confused “huh?” but he keeps going, not looking at you, opting to stare at his screen. “so unfortunately you’ll have to be the brave one and make the first move.” he scrolls on his laptop nonchalantly, like he hasn’t told you the most fabulous news.
granted, you’re still confused. you know he’s talking about chris, that’s obvious, you aren’t dumb. but why wouldn’t he ask you out? is he afraid? that’s kinda cute, you think. “why doesn’t he wanna ask me out himself?” are you're a nervous wreck. you’ve never ever been the one to initiate any sort of romantic event in your life!
a recognizable voice is heard from behind you. “who?”
you shriek, dropping the glass of water. the glass shatters and chris is quick to grab your shoulders and pull you back before any shards hurt you. your hand quickly flies to your mouth. “i’m so sor-“
matt gets up from where he was sitting. “i’ll get the broom.” he exits the room which leaves you and chris for just a minute or so before matt returns. the water is spreading on the floor so chris grabs paper towels.
he kneels on the floor, soaking up the water as you stand frozen. tears begin to form in your eyes as a lump grows in your throat. you try to blink past them as best as you can before anyone sees you. they’ll think you’re childish, crying over a spilled glass.
what if chris doesn’t want you anymore? how dare you come into HIS house and break something so fragile. you’re ashamed of yourself. but what if he doesn't actually like you? what if matt's lying as a joke? you choke on a sob, causing a strange noise to come out. chris perks up, looking up at you. he leaves the paper towels on the floor as his face changes quickly, feeling concerned
he gets up. “oh sweetheart.” he coos, wrapping his arms around you. you’re engulfed in his large figure as you let the tears spill into the pink t-shirt that he put on just for you, not that you knew that.
matt re-enters the kitchen, raising a brow at chris as he strokes your hair with a hand. he shakes his head slightly as if to say “don’t talk.” and he points his chin towards the mess that’s still on the floor. matt folds his arms and frowns, thinking chris wants him to clean it.
but chris mouths “leave it there” and matt nods, leaving the broom against the counter as he exits the room again, letting you two have a moment. you’re babbling apologies into chris’ chest and he ‘accidentally’ smells your hair.
“you smell really nice” he whispers unintentionally, not meaning to say it aloud. his face immediately tenses. oh gosh, you’re gonna think he’s such a weirdo. but you don’t.. at all. you appreciate the compliment and you think he’s trying to distract you from the little mistake, which you appreciate.
you smile softly. “thank you. i-its strawberry pound cake.” you hiccup. chris cheeses. you’re adorable. you apologize again, “i’m really sorry about the cup. and the mess..”
he shakes his head and shushes you softly. “got that for like two bucks at target, don’t worry about it.” he reassures you and pulls away from the embrace, seeing your face all red. “yer a good girl, could never be mad at you.”
he wipes a tear freshly fallen from your eye, your lashes being long and delicate. in your head, you’re freaking out, no longer worrying about the glass. you remember what matt said earlier, which brings butterflies to your stomach
you feel very shy and dopey now. you break eye contact and grab his hand. “i have feelings for you.” you admit, getting straight to the point. “like really big. gigantic. so uh.. if you want, we could go out or something..” you nervously confess, waiting for a response.
meanwhile chris is like HOLYSHITHOLYSHITHOLYSHIT. he can’t believe this is happening?? you?? and him?? together?? on a date???? hes already thinking of places he could take you to.
he hums and you look up at him. his thumb brushes your face again, but this time it’s against your cheek. “do you like Italian food?”

Jaeger Piloting 101: How Rangers Get Into The Thing & Other Basic Stuff
Hello Pacific Rim fans, today I am doing a post on the topic of how rangers get into the conn-pod, and take control of the Jaeger, plus do a quick look at conn-pod interiors in general! I'll be using pictures sourced from movie-screencaps.com to illustrate the process.
Before I proceed, I'd like to remind folks that Lady Danger's canonical name contains a racial slur. It will be depicted here in screenshots, but I encourage fans to use the name "Lady Danger" in casual conversation, fanfiction etc. It doesn't matter if the name was referencing an old engine, it doesn't matter if no harm was intended by it; a slur's a slur.
Before the rangers enter the conn-pod, they must first suit up. This isn't something they can do on their own - they have a dedicated team of assistant techs to help them into their drivesuits. As we can see here, Raleigh and Yancy Becket's team have the name of their jaeger printed on the backs of their jumpsuits:

If you read my earlier post on jaegers, you know that drivesuits come in two layers. Here's Raleigh and Yancy already wearing the first layer, while one of their technicians assists:

Next, the technicians help them into the drivesuit's second, armored layer. On the right side of the first image is the area where the drivesuits are kept when not in use:

And then we have this thing that's pulled out of a special storage box and put over the spinal area, connecting the back of the armor together:

We also see Yancy and Raleigh pull on their helmets, and this strange liquid drains out. (It makes me think of the orange juice Raleigh was drinking earlier.) It's not clear how common this feature is, but we know it's not universal - the refurbished Lady Danger doesn't have this, and Cherno Alpha's helmets don't look it would even be possible.

Next up, the pilots enter the conn-pod. Note those two light gray things on the floor in the first picture; that's part of the Pilot Motion Rig. Also note the dark gray things hanging from the ceiling in the second picture; that's also part of it.

Once the pilots step into the bottom part of Pilot Motion Rig, metal clamps lock their feet into place. On the right, Raleigh is already locked in; on the left, Yancy is not yet locked in:

Meanwhile, more technicians help pilots get into the upper part of the Pilot Motion Rig.

At this point, something magical and wonderful absolutely terrifying else happens: the floor pulls away, leaving the pilots standing like:

In the case of Lady Danger, a nuclear-powered Mark-3, this is where technicians drop the head to connect it to the body. (The head is stored separately to reduce radiation exposure that might damage the delicate circuits.)
At this point, the Beckets are looking at this in front of them:

As the head connects, the pilot-to-pilot protocol is engaged, the computer system fires up, and the Beckets see a LOADING screen:

In the Anchorage Shatterdome, Lady Danger was wheeled out through a door on a rolling platform. At this point, the neural handshake was activated with a countdown of fifteen seconds.
The neural link is established, and you got two people in control of a Jaeger!
From here, stuff often depends on the specific jaeger, as control systems can be pretty different. For example, we see Raleigh and Yancy holding these round things in the arms they're controlling at the beginning of the film, but the refurbished Lady Danger doesn't seem to use them, and neither do the other jaegers.

I'd also like to contrast Cherno Alpha's drivesuits with Lady Danger's drivesuits for a moment, just to emphasize how different designs can be. As you can see, each pilot's drivesuit has cables connected to the arm they're controlling:

Also as I was looking at pictures of jaeger interiors, I noticed something curious about Lady Danger vs. Striker Eureka.

Hey! Why did I split over something not even THAT traumatic??
I'm here to tell you. :)
So, this particular discussion has come up in our system server before and it's actually something I've wanted to talk about for a long time on Tumblr because I've never actually seen someone talk about this, and I am being hit with a sudden god-like hubris at 3 in the morning, so here we go!
So your question was "Why did I just split? What just happened wasn't even that traumatic. I've been through so much worse in the past, I don't even feel that stressed. What the hell? Am I just making this new part up?" and on and on. The idea that only the most awful and traumatic things are what cause splits in DID (especially later in life, after the childhood trauma window of 7-9ish has ended and especially in adulthood) is actually incredibly false, and I am about to explain why.
Note: This is about traumagenic DID systems, so endogenic systems, please stay off of this post thank you. :) /not mad
Note number two: I do want to get out of the way, that all parts DO split for a reason, there's no parts that exist for no reason (even if the reason doesn't seem relevant to you now, it may have been relevant at the time of the split, OR may have been somehow relevant to your brain even if it doesn't make sense to you now.) So I want to make it really clear that splits do not occur only because of hyperfixations. There typically has to be something going on for a split to occur, and hyperfixation alone will not cut it. Alright, now that I've got that out of the way, let's talk about how DID brains run on patterns.
DID brains run on patterns, like I said. All brains do, actually, but DID brains take it to an nth degree because these patterns that it learns are what help it stay alive in a distressing and traumatic environment during childhood. Our brains are remarkably plastic and they will do whatever is necessary to survive a given situation. It's why something like DID can even exist.
So what kind of patterns do we typically see in brains with DID? Well, the easiest one is that a lot of people with DID have pretty similar alter "types" or "roles." This is just a widespread pattern that you see across a large demographic of systems. It's why terms like "gatekeeper" and "protector" and "caretaker" exist. Because nearly all DID systems have parts that fill those roles, even if those roles aren't filled in the most "traditional" sense. DID is rarely random, every part exists for an express reason, and that reason is almost always symbolic in some way, even if it doesn't seem like it now. Once you start learning trauma memories and WHY parts exist, you very quickly start to see the symbolism and sometimes it is absolutely fucking terrifying, to say the least.
What other patterns are common?
Well, patterns we see in our own system and in other systems are something quite literally called "splitting patterns" which are more common in polyfragmented systems but not exclusive to them. This has various ways of showing itself, and the user @foreverfragmented made a post awhile back that I'm having a really hard time finding, HOWEVER I did screenshot the section about splitting patterns when I first read it, attached below:

Wow that photo ended up bigger than I thought it would be. lol. Anyway. Those are another example of splitting patterns. (Note: in the original post, FF talks about how some of the terms above were coined by them or other systems, so not recognized medically, however I think they were worded perfectly which is why I shared them here.)
Another few examples include alter templates (AKA, splitting the same alter over and over in varying iterations), the same parts going out for the same types of trauma every single time, and why certain alter roles very often have the same "flavor" of personality.
For example, gatekeepers are often considered a bit cold and distant, and can be very analytically minded and rarely react purely on emotion alone. (I feel like the most common gatekeeper Myers-Briggs has gotta be INTJ...that was a joke, lmao.) This is typically for a reason. You have to have a certain mindset and a certain way of handling things to be able to properly manage a system. And this is not to say all gatekeepers are this way, but the pattern of a LOT of gatekeepers being like this is not unnoticed. Our DID specialist could tell pretty early on that our primary gatekeeper (James) was a gatekeeper long before he ever told her he was simply because of how he held himself, how he spoke about others in the system, and how much he despised her for "stepping on his toes"😂 They work together much better now, FYI, but it was rough in the beginning.
An example of alter templates in our system in particular is what we call the "Michaels." They were some of our earliest alters, and our brain was like "hey this guy is working really well, so I'm just gonna keep doing it." And it worked! Then, when trauma shifted to something completely different but in the same vein (CSA) our brain once again attempted to use this "Michael" template. It didn't work quite the same. And so our brain had to figure out these new patterns, which it was fucking desperate to do because we were going through some heinous shit that it could hardly even comprehend. I've learned that basically every blue-eyed white-haired motherfucker in here was a Michael copy at one point, but had elaborated into some other version that suited its job more.
Now, for the example that is going to actually help me explain the answer to the question posed at the very beginning of this post: alters who go out for the same things over and over.
So, depending on splitting tolerance, or whatever you happen to be going through in your childhood, you will likely have various "groups" of alters that handle certain things. If you had a particularly tumultuous childhood with several varying types of traumas, you will probably have several of these groups. And depending on length of trauma time, severity of trauma time, and levels of support during trauma time, these groups may be very large.
For example, if you had a situation like domestic violence (DV) happening in your household, you will have a part or parts dedicated just for DV, and if you also had CSA going on, you will have a separate group of parts (or a single part) who handles only the CSA. Unless your system is quite small and you have alters take multiple types of abuses, this is pretty commonly the case. [Note: want to say this is not subsystems unless these groups are highly separated via either amnesia barriers or inner world (IW) barriers, and have better communication with each other versus the rest of the system. The definition of subsystem gets a little funky, but we're not talking about that. Just wanted to make that clear. You can have groups of alters without them being subsystems.]
"Okay, so yeah, you're right. I have alter groups for [insert various traumas] what does that have to do with me splitting over [insert mundane thing that isn't even really traumatic]?"
Continuing on the "DID brains run on patterns" line of thinking, if your brain has patterns set and understood for the various traumas that you lived through in your childhood, usually up until teen years or adulthood, your brain knows what to do when those traumas occur again. The patterns are set. It's why it's super common for people with DID who experience SA in teen or adult years and don't end up having a split. Unless they have an extremely low splitting tolerance or the situation is extremely unique, the brain will just recycle what it already has. No need to go through the literally massively painful and traumatic experience of splitting again for something it already knows how to handle. This being said, the part that experiences this might end up splitting at a much later date if this trauma is far too difficult for it to handle, this is also common because sometimes it's "easy" to handle the trauma in the moment because they're used to this flavor of trauma but the processing of said trauma afterward can be just as traumatic and can cause a split.
Same if your father was super abusive to your mother, or vise versa, and you happen to have an abusive partner. That pattern is known and comfortable. That's what professionals mean by "DID systems are more likely to be victims of abuse than perpetrators." They return to the comfortable patterns, which, with DID, equals abuse. Things outside of those patterns are dangerous and confusing to navigate and the brain will avoid that at all costs.
However, and this is the answer to the question. What happens when something happens that the brain doesn't recognize in its "pattern database"? I'll give an example.
Say you were very high achieving in school. This is pretty common of systems who were diagnosed in adulthood, so far as I've seen. You likely did really well, had really high marks because your parents expected it of you or were abusive and angry if you didn't constantly constantly succeed in their eyes. This can also reflect in sports, clubs, musical talents, etc. This pattern continues on in adulthood. You push yourself very hard to be high achieving. Whether this be in a college setting, a work setting, etc. You are likely often doing well in those fields pre-system discovery, at least. Post discovery often leads to the "spiraling" phase, which sucks but again that's not what we're discussing.
So, say you have a job. You're hella good at it. You are always receiving praise, you are always getting raises, your reviews are always hella good. You're like "okay yeah, I'm good at this job, so I'm going to apply to a higher paid position in the company that just opened up."
And then...you don't get the job. Well, that sucks. Better luck next time, right?
Wrong. Well, not entirely. That's completely true. But that's not how your brain is actually processing this, is it?
You might tell yourself "oh well" but in your high achieving brain's POV, it's like "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???? WE DON'T DO THE FAILURE STUFF!!! WHAT THE F***!!!" And it might panic, and several alters might panic, and the host might panic, and suddenly they're spiraling out of control over something that is mildly disappointing at best. Because WE DON'T HAVE A GUY FOR THIS?! We have a guy for SA, we have a guy for DV, we have a guy for medical trauma, we have a guy for bullying, etc. But we don't have a guy for REJECTION?! AHHH! [splits a part just to handle rejection.]
In adulthood, I've noticed both in myself and other systems I frequently speak to, these highly specialized parts are more commonly split in adulthood. Because while patterns are super helpful in childhood when you're experiencing the generally same shit over and over, in adulthood or even late teen years, there's so many effing unknowns that the brain is just like "what the actual fuck is this, this doesn't follow the fucking SCRIPT you guys. The PATTERNS?? Do they mean nothing to you??"
DID is a disorder that is incredibly helpful for survival in childhood and is an absolutely miserable crutch to live with in adulthood. And that's not me saying it super sucks all the time, but the disorder is not meant to happen, it shouldn't have happened, and coping with it without therapy and proper integration of parts and memories just makes adulthood kind of a hellscape, to be frank. There are tons of positives, I am so thankful, don't get me wrong. But there are a lot of downsides too.
So, to kind of drive home some examples of things that can cause a split that might not even be inherently traumatic based on my own experience and the experiences of some folks in our system server:
-(TW: mild NSFW in this one) We had our first consensual sexual experience when we were 19. We didn't have a guy for that. Everything we'd ever experienced throughout our childhood and teen years was not consensual. So when we were having consensual sex with our girlfriend, we were losing our mind because we didn't have this pattern integrated. So we split a guy whose literal only job was "consensual sex" and he was pretty much made to be the "perfect partner" for our girlfriend.
-We have a part whose only job is to play video games. We didn't know why until we realized he was fronting during stressful family gatherings and was playing videogames to pass the time until they were allowed to leave.
-We have a part that split only to handle our irrational fear of getting sick with a deadly illness right around COVID lockdown time.
-We had a part split just to internalize the feeling of "going to hell" due to our religious beliefs at the time.
-We have a lot of parts that split just to hold feelings of anger, sadness, or fear, even in adulthood. This is common in situations where anger or showing emotions was not allowed in childhood, so if the brain decides that's not allowed, when a part gets overly angry they might split a part to hold that anger, which then typically gets buried deep down.
Note about the above example: Trauma therapists often say that anger is one of the last emotions processed when processing traumatic events. Which is why "anger holding alters" are so so so fucking common. Kids and teens and adults get angry and if that's not allowed in some way shape or form, the brain will suppress it. It's also why it's common for people with DID to be able to "turn off" emotions or if triggered, will have a sudden intense burst of emotions (typically anger or frustration) because of how intensely repressed emotions often have to be just to survive living in a toxic environment that would cause something like DID. When you were a kid, you couldn't cry in front of your parents because you would be ridiculed or punished. So you will "turn it off" and go hide to cry later. But if, as an adult, you never let yourself "go cry later," that shit will build up and cause those intense emotional breakdowns, even after something that's considerably smaller scale than what you're used to. Kind of considered the "straw that broke the camel's back." You can be having a shit week with horrible thing after horrible thing and you're doing really well at "shutting it off" especially when around others, because god forbid you let the mask fall, and then suddenly you can't open a cheese stick or you can't find your keys so you might be late, or there's a stain on your shirt right before work, or the entire contents of your bag get dumped onto the floor of your car because you had to brake too hard...and that's when the breakdown happens.
Anyway, to get back on track, there are probably a plethora of other ways a system could split that seem mundane or "not that traumatizing" or alter roles might be super hyper-specific and the reasoning for that is because ✨patterns✨ We love to see it. /sar

Life as a footballer playing in a foreign country meant that finding even a speck of time to see friends and family from home was few and far between. Add on the fact that your little... something, also happened to live in another country meant that it was absolute hell trying to cultivate it into something that would last.
Ever since the wedding, Ona and Lucy had texted regularly, occasionally face timing or calling if they were both free, but things had remained strictly platonic. In fact, Lucy felt that their almost kiss had been entirely wiped from Ona’s mind, except for when she noticed the Spanish player’s gaze drifting further south than her eyes as they spoke through a screen.
One night Lucy was curled up on her couch, a muted Premier League replay playing on the TV, Ona’s face smiling at her from her phone. She wasn’t smiling now, however.
“The derby is soon,” Ona spoke, her brow furrowed in slight worry.
“Yeah? Well, how are you feeling about it? It’s a pretty big game.”
Lucy was all too familiar with the stress of the derby, having played in several of them, if not on the opposing side, and knew the immense pressure that came with it. She knew that the United women’s team had not yet won against the City women, and despite being a City girl at heart, the look on the younger woman’s face made her hope that Manchester United could pull out a win, if only for Ona.
“Very nervous. Dios mío, Lucy! What if I make a mistake and the fans start to hate me? I couldn’t bear it,” came Ona’s reply, Lucy watching as the younger woman worried her lip.
“You won’t, I promise. And the fans love you, so you shouldn’t think about things like that.” It was true, Ona was a fan favourite with the Manchester United fans, and so long as she tried her absolute best - which Ona always did – then they wouldn’t fault her for any mistakes. But Lucy knew that it was perfectly natural to feel the pressure, nonetheless.
“I know it’s a massive thing to ask, but… would you want to come to the derby? Of course you might want to do other things with your weekend off and I don’t expect you to drop everything to come watch the game but-”
“Yeah, sure. Why not?” Lucy replied, interrupting the Spaniard’s rambling and smiling as Ona positively lit up at her words.
“Really? You’ll come?” God she was pretty, Lucy thought as the other woman beamed at her, delighted by the English woman’s answer.
“Of course. I have been missing Manchester a little as well, you know?” she winked as she mentally began to plan the trip out in her mind.
Flights would be relatively easy, the plane to England from Barcelona only taking a couple of hours. There were, however,  a few logistics to work out, like where she would stay. Her brother didn’t live in Manchester, Jorge remaining in their hometown, but surely Demi would let her stay, right? Her musings were interrupted by Ona, who seemed to have read her mind.
“You can stay at my place, if you want.” The Spaniard blushed bright red as she made the offer, seemingly embarrassed at her rather forward suggestion.
“Yeah? That would be great if I could.”
“I have a spare room I can set up for you! No hay problema,” Ona confirmed, resting her phone on the table to stretch out her arms and yawn.
“Someone’s tired,” Lucy chuckled and was shot an adorably grumpy look by the woman on her screen. She found her heart tightening as she took in Ona’s pout and had to restrain her entire body from talking a screenshot of their call.
“I think I should go,” Ona spoke, a slightly disappointed expression on her face. “Training was, how do you say? Training was no walk in the park?”
“Sí, that is correct,” Lucy laughed at the Spaniards use of the English phrase, and then she felt her voice softening almost involuntarily. “Goodnight Ona, I’ll speak to you soon.”
After a few more minutes of goodbyes and promises to text each other later, they ended the call, and Lucy collapsed back to lay down on her couch. She was going to the Manchester Derby. And she was going to stay at Ona’s house. Where she lived.
She lay there in silence for a few moments before Lucy’s eyes shot open. Fuck, she was meant to visit Jorge.  Once again she opened her phone, immediately dialling her brother disregarding the fact that it was currently 12am.
“Look who decided to grace me with a call at this very late hour, what’s up Luce?” came her brother’s voice from the phone, and Lucy rolled her eyes at his jab.
“Hey Jorge, I know I was supposed to pop around to see the kids my next break, but do you mind if I take rain check? I’ve kind of got other plans.” She knew her brother wouldn’t mind as he was pretty easygoing, and she saw her niece and nephew all the time, so one missed trip wouldn’t be an issue.
“Plans better than entertaining two hyper children for a whole weekend? Can’t believe you would pass on such a fun time, though you always were the boring one, huh, Luce?” Jorge said, leading her to grin fondly. As much as Lucy and her brother gave each other shit, they were close and there was nothing Lucy loved more than her family.
“Oh, fuck off. Anyway, that all good with you? I know it’s last minute and all, and I apologise for letting the kiddos down.”
“That’s alright, I’m sure they’ll survive without Aunt Lucy spoiling them for a whole weekend. What’ve you got planned anyway? Something to do with that Spanish player you’re always banging on about?”
Lucy almost choked on her own spit at those words. She didn’t talk about Ona that much, did she? Now that she thought about it, maybe she did. But the fact that Jorge seemed to think it was romantic was rather suspicious.
“Why would you think that?”
“Whenever we speak it’s all ‘Ona this’, ‘Ona that,’ like Luce, you’re about at subtle as a hurricane.”
Okay, maybe that was fair.
“Stan said something to you didn’t she,” Lucy questioned, almost dead sure that the other Lucy would have said something to her brother, if only for meddling reasons.
“She may have said a few things.. something about you guys being attached at the hip during her wedding?” Jorge responded and internally the fullback cursed her friends for having such big gobs.
“Her and Jordan can’t keep their mouths shut to save their lives. We’re just friends, and I’m going to watch the derby, as a friend.”
“Ah yes, the age old term: friends. You know Stan sent me that picture of you guys at the reception, and I gotta say the heart eyes are remarkable for ‘just friends’.” Despite it only being a phone call, the eyebrow wiggle was so loud that Lucy could practically see it.
“Ah, I don’t know. Think Ona just sees us as friends now.”
“Have you actually spoken to her about it?” Jorge asked, voice taking on a sincere tone that was different to his usual jokey one that he used with Lucy.
“No, and I’m totally okay with that.”
“Okay, okay. But I’m just saying, Keira has moved on so-”
“Why shouldn’t I? I’ve heard it all before.” Lucy let out a sigh.  “Look, I’ll talk to you later, yeah? Tell the kids I said hi.”
“Definitely will. And Lucy?”
“Hm?”
“If there really is something there, then I think it would be worth to talk to her about it.”
“Rare moment of wisdom from you there,” she spoke, and while she was poking fun at her brother, she appreciated his interest and willingness to offer her advice.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t get used to it,” came the sarcastic retort, and Lucy cracked another smile at her brother’s words.  They often teased the hell out of one another, sure, but her brother always had her back and was able to offer her moments of clarity when she was stuck.
“Well, I’ll have a think about it. Chat to you later.”
“Don’t be an idiot Luce!” she heard as she cut off the call, flopping back down onto her back. Manchester here she comes, she supposed.

The trip to England had gone pretty smoothly, Ona and Lucy agreeing to meet up after the match and head back to the former’s place, and so Lucy found herself walking up the steps of Leigh Sports Village without having even caught a glimpse of the Spaniard she had come to see.  She had opted to be as incognito as possible, donning an all black outfit, sunglasses, and a cap, and crossed both her fingers and toes that she wouldn’t be spotted as it would only start a huge wave of speculation as to why she was present. Unfortunately, her hopes of remaining invisible were soon dashed.
“Lucy!”
Lucy internally groaned as she heard the Dutch accent yelling her way, and slowly spun on her heel to face the smiling figure of her national team coach. Sarina was waving her over, and it wasn’t like she could blank her, so Lucy reluctantly made her way over to the older woman\’s seat.
“Hey Sarina, didn’t think I’d see you here,” she greeted, sending a smile and a wave to Arjan, the assistant coach of the Lionesses, who was seated next to her coach.
“Neither. I thought you would be in Spain. What brings you to the derby?”
“Um, just was just in Manchester and wanted to see my old club play. That’s all,” Lucy responded unconvincingly, cursing the flush that spread across her cheeks.  There was nothing illegal about her going to watch the derby match, so why did she feel like she had been caught?
“Well, would you want to sit with us? I’d appreciate your insight, especially now that Leah’s injured.”
“Yeah, sure,” she relented. I mean, who could say no to their national team coach?
As she settled into the seat next to Sarina, she knew that her anonymity would be well and truly gone. Despite her attempt to remain incognito and support Ona undetected, being seated next to bloody Sarina Weigman hardly made her blend into the crowd, and so she sat down next to the Dutch woman with a touch of disappointment on her features. No visible cheering for Ona was on the cards now, she supposed.
The game started well for United, Hayley Ladd scoring an absolute stunner of a goal, and Lucy couldn’t help but feel ridiculously proud when she saw the jubilance on Ona’s face.
Football had always been a beautiful sport to Lucy, no matter who was playing, but watching Ona was play was positively mesmerising. The way her muscles flexed as she meticulously controlled the ball, and the glitter of sweat that glistened on her abs as she pulled her shirt up to wipe her face had the English fullback positively gobsmacked.
“Lucy! Lucy? Are you listening?” Her coach’s familiar voice pierced the bubble of lust that Lucy had found herself in, and she gave Sarina sheepish smile as she met the older woman’s eyes.
“Sorry, what was that?”
The Dutch woman’s eyes narrowed as she took in her player, and Lucy nervously swallowed under the scrutiny,
“Which one are you sweet on?”
“Pardon?” Lucy replied, eyes bugging out of her head as she stared at Sarina in shock.
“One of the United players. You are involved with one of them, I can tell. You’ve been distracted this whole time and was happy when they scored.” Well, she was caught there. Sarina levelled Lucy with a knowing look and tilted her head in question as the fullback sighed. While Sarina was technically her boss, she had also become somewhat of a friend, and she cared deeply about the players that she coached so Lucy felt rather alright with sharing her current situation. Plus, Sarina could tell when she was lying.
“It’s, uh, the right back. Number two. And it’s not really anything yet.”
The older woman let out a hum of acknowledgement and shot a smile Lucy’s way. “Well she’s a very talented player. Passionate. I like that. Much like you are.”
Lucy blushed at the compliment, always priding herself in playing with as much passion as possible. And she agreed with the initial statement as well. Ona’s football oozed passion; with every pass, dribble, cross, and shot she took, you could see just how much she loved the sport, and Lucy in turn adored her for that.
Midway through the game, her phone pinged, and she was met with a simple photo of Jorge’s TV screen, herself front and centre. Yikes. Well, there was absolutely no hiding now.
The game ended with a late goal from United, leading the Red Devils to their first ever derby win and cementing their spot in the Champions League. Ona was awarded player of the match – which in Lucy’s opinion should always be awarded to her – and she sent a cute little wave in their direction when she spotted the older defender in the crowd, making Lucy blush a little from her spot next to Sarina.
After saying her goodbyes and signing a few autographs for some fans who had noticed her, Lucy headed in the direction of the carpark, having made an agreement with Ona to meet her there subsequent to the match. Surprisingly she only had to wait a few minutes before Ona came barrelling out of the building, sports bag in hand.
“Lucy! We woooonnn!” Ona yelled, dropping her bag and wrapping Lucy into a tight hug, causing the older woman to stumble back a little due to the unexpected contact. Ona smelt like apples and cinnamon, and Lucy couldn’t help but inhale her scent a little until she berated herself for just how creepy that was and forced herself to stop.
“I did see that,” Lucy laughed, “Congratulations Ona. I told you that you had nothing to worry about.”
Ona smiled widely at that, arms still wrapped around the other fullback’s torso. “I’m sorry that you had to watch your team lose, but Manchester is RED!”
“I suppose, but just this once.”
Ona smacked her lightly on the shoulder at that – a move that was starting to feel oh so familiar – and then motioned her head in the direction of her car after noticing that they were attracting some curious looks from passers-by. After throwing her bag in the back alongside Ona’s, Lucy climbed into the passenger seat and made a show of settling down, letting out an exaggerated sigh of contentment and earning a giggle from the Spanish fullback.
“Gotta enjoy being passenger princess for once,” Lucy grinned, winking at the woman in the driver’s seat who laughed out loud for what seemed to be the hundredth time that afternoon. Lucy loved that laugh and made a vow to do anything she could to hear it again, and again, and again.
The car ride was nice, if not a little scary, as Lucy had to grab onto the ‘oh shit!’ bar a few times as Ona hurtled around a corner. The English woman made a mental note that if they drove anywhere together again, then she would muscle her way into the driver’s seat as while she liked just being a passenger sometimes, she valued her life way more.
When Lucy finally stepped into Ona’s apartment, she took a moment to just take in her appearance. It felt incredibly homely, and while it was clean, it still looked well lived in with smatterings of photographs everywhere which made Lucy smile softly. She found herself hoping that maybe a photo of herself might make itself home there one day.
“Nice place you’ve got here.”
Ona blushed. “Thanks. I tried to make it as much like home as possible.”
“Well you’ve done a great job with the decorating,” Lucy smiled, dropping her sports bag next to the door and picking up a mug with the word ‘Penal-tea’ emblazoned on it alongside a graphic of a football.
“The girls bought it to make me more English or something,” Ona rolled her eyes as she noticed the mug the English fullback was eyeing, causing Lucy to let out a laugh. “Anyway, come sit!”
Lucy didn’t need to be told twice as she threw herself onto Ona’s couch and watched on as the Spaniard grabbed a few snacks before kicking off her shoes and coming to rest next to Lucy. They fell into easy conversation, TV playing an old rerun of Friends (“Joey is so funny, Lucy!”), and Lucy had never felt lighter.
Neither of them had even noticed that they had gravitated towards each other until Lucy’s eyes flicked down to Ona’s lips and noticed that all she would have to do to capture them with her own was to tilt her head forward a few centimetres.
When she moved her focus back up, she saw that Ona had that look in her eyes – the same one she had at the wedding – and Lucy swallowed nervously under the Spaniard’s intense gaze.
She suddenly became aware of every single point of contact between them, their shoulders that were pressed together, Ona’s feet that rested over Lucy’s outstretched legs, their hands that brushed together ever so slightly, and Lucy felt her body start to tingle.
Ona was so close that Lucy could count every freckle on her face, and a sliver of bare skin of her stomach peeked out from where her shirt had ridden up slightly. She was wearing fuzzy socks, always being one to feel the cold, and there was a little smudge of chocolate on her lips which Lucy longed to kiss away.
Slowly, if not surely, they found themselves leaning in, and Lucy could just, almost…
BANG!
The sound of the door slamming forced the footballers apart, and they practically threw themselves onto opposite ends of the couch.
“Oh-na!” came Ella Toone’s bellowing voice, and the familiar tones of Alessia’s voice soon filled the apartment as well.
They only had to wait a few moments until the two girls barged into the room and came to a dead halt in front of them, faces painted with looks of surprise.
“What are you doing here Luce?” Ella asked, blinking owlishly at Ona and Lucy while Alessia’s mouth slowly spread into a knowing smile.
“Uh, Ona invited me to watch the derby,” she managed to get out, still rather shaken by her moment with the other fullback and the rude interruption that followed.
“Well, that was nice of her wasn’t it?” Ella laughed, realisation slowly dawning on her face as she took in just how awkwardly Ona and Lucy were sitting as they attempted to be normal.
“Yeah, super nice,” Alessia added, her voice wavering as she threatened to break into giggles as she nudged her best friend in the side. Ona looked mortified.
“Anyway, we came to ask if she wanted to come out to celebrate the win with us, but we’ve decided that you’re both coming.”
With those words, the duo was on them, and Lucy could just catch Ona mouthing an apologetic ‘lo siento’, before Alessia and Ella were dragging the both of them every which way to get them ready to go out.
As she was being ordered around by Ella, Lucy silently cursed the world for being a massive cockblock, and knew that there was likely no way in hell they would get a minute alone now that Ona’s teammates knew the English woman was in town.
Her only consolation was that at least she knew that based on the two ‘almost kisses’ they had shared, she was not simply imagining the tension between them. Gritting her teeth as Ella threw an outfit at her that she had scavenged from Lucy’s bag, she made a silent promise to herself that she would get that kiss - at least before the World Cup began in a few months’ time.

Oh yeah. Though to be clear, it's not just one tweet; it's a motherfuckin' thread (with screenshots below for posterity).

I won't go over this whole thing point by point, but one aspect that jumps out at me is how Viv deflects responsibility from herself onto the viewers. If your audience doesn't fully "understand" your characters, that's a problem. It's your job as a writer to make them understand, and do it in the story you're telling, not on social media. Can't help but see shades of how gobsmacked Fennah was that his audience didn't get how one of his characters represented toxic relationships, despite that character amounting to a harmless, childlike pet.

While Viv's response doesn't demean the audience like Fennah's, it does come off as a tad arrogant, as if Millie being perceived as flat is the viewers' fault, not hers.
The second thing that stood out is the list of Millie's qualities: "She is resourceful, she has strong family ties and memories, she has sibling rivalry, she's excitable and hyper focused." Only three of those are actual personality traits, and I can't even remember her being "hyper focused" at any time. To me, that would suggest working long hours on some kind of project, too engrossed to notice hunger, thirst, or how much time had passed. I guess you could make the argument that she worked tirelessly to become the skilled fighter she is, but we never see that in the show. I'm not even sure how "strong" those family ties are considering Millie didn't even hug her mom when she saw her. Basically, this smacks of telling rather than showing, trying to convince us this is the case rather than letting us see for ourselves.
[Edit 6/10/23 Forgot to mention this tidbit: "we are literally on 3", meaning the third episode. Girl, no. You were literally on ten episodes total, and eleven/twelve (depending on whether or not the pilot counts) with the release of Western Energy. That's way too long to go without properly developing one of the main characters.]
Also, "we found more storylines that influenced Blitz"? You mean you created more storylines with him as the focus. You chose to follow those paths in Season 1. It didn't just happen to you. "Whoops! Tripped over this random plot! Guess I have to use it in an episode!" Obviously Blitzo is the main character so it makes sense that he'd have the most plots centered around him, but it's extremely telling that y'all gave absolutely none of the focus to Millie.
Let's look at the seven episodes of Season 1. Blitzo could be the focus of three, Moxxie could get one, Millie could get one, Loona could get one, and Stolas could get one, and you could save extra story ideas for Season 2. There ya go. Yes, seven episodes is a pretty short season with not much wiggle room to fit all the juiciest stories in, but there's definitely space to tease what's coming. Imply that there's more to these characters and this world than meets the eye. Make the audience hungry for more. This is a fan-funded Youtube series, after all; it's not like any networks or streaming services are threatening to pull the plug if the metrics aren't up to snuff.
Finally, the "this is a male-led show" excuse for female characters being underdeveloped is so weak, especially for an adult show that prides itself on social progressivism. You've got a handful of queer main characters and a trans side character, but fleshing out the women was a step too far-? Y'all are all about spotlighting LGBT stories, but anything resembling feminism that goes deeper than '90s-style "hey, this chick can fight!" girl power? Whoa, that's a bit too much, buddy.
Call me crazy, but shouldn't viewers get the impression that all of a story's principal characters have inner lives, regardless of gender? What is Millie like when she's alone, isolated from her relationships? What does she think about? How does she entertain herself without anyone to brawl with, or anything to hack into with an axe? The show hasn't given us any hints.
Honestly, if you're not good at writing female characters, you're allowed to say that. Yes, it's embarrassing to admit when you're a woman yourself, but if you grew up in a culture that promotes internalized misogyny and prioritizes masculine wants over feminine needs (which many of us did, let's be real), it's understandable. That shit's hard to unlearn. What might make it easier when it comes to characters, though, is what I like to call the Ellen Ripley method.
Challenge, Viv: Write a nuanced male character. Give him strengths and flaws, likes and dislikes, quirks and hobbies, strained relationships and happy ones.
Now make him female.
It really is that simple.
We'll have to wait and see how much that defense regarding Hazbin Hotel truly reflects reality, though if I were a gambler, I'd bet Alastor and Angel Dust will dominate the story and leave Charlie and Vaggie on the sidelines.

HIIII I wanted to ask a more technical question related to the game. I know in another ask I think you mentioned that the ending you get in chaper 1 would determine where the story goes in chapter 2, but I was curious if individual/specific choices from chapter 1 would make a difference or effect anything like a bit of dialogue in chapter 2.
Like for example in Oleanders route you pick a trinket and that can effect a few lines of dialogue later. Will some choices like that carry on into other chapters? Tho I'd totally understand if not since it'd probably get too complicated to do stuff like that ^^
I really hope this isn't spoiler territory. I tried my best not to do that ><
The short answer is yes! Choices you make in chapter one can absolutely be referenced or have ongoing effects in later chapters. For anyone who has never programmed before, I'll explain a little about how choices work under the read more and show some examples of Obscura code, but the simple version is that it's only a little more work to include stuff like this: a line of code and then whatever the extra/alternative dialogue is.
So!! If you've never programmed before, the word you'll want to know is variable. A variable is basically just a box that contains information. In basically all visual novels any information the game needs to remember is stored in a variable. And in Ren'py games, it is very easy to make and use variables for a lot of stuff!
Your protagonist's name, for example, is put in a variable box labelled "Name", and so we can just type [Name] in dialogue and Ren'py knows that what we're asking for is the contents of the "Name" variable box, so it just shows that. You can see us doing just that in the first line of this code screencap! So when you enter your name at the beginning of a playthrough, you're telling the game what information goes into the "Name" variable box.

(You can also see how we set variables here, with the "trust_keir" variable remembering if you said yes or no to trusting him, and if you say no then he gets one point added to his affection score.)
Within a single playthrough/save file your variables stay the same until something in the code changes them, but starting a new game makes a new set of variables for that playthrough. That's why no matter how many new games you start and enter a different name into, your old saves will still have the name you entered there.
Since Chapter 2 is going to be a direct continuation of Chapter 1, you're still in the same save file and so all your variables just continue being used. And that means they're available for us to use for all sorts of things! Using variables can be complicated if there's a lot of them that interact in a lot of ways (ask me how a certain date scene is going!), but here's a pretty simple version.

There's two ways onto Keir's route: you can get kidnapped by him normally, or Vesper can accidentally find a way into Mouse Hole after leaving Cirrus' route. If you do leave Cirrus' route, the variable "cirrus_escape" is set to True. That means that later on, I can program dialogue that will only be shown if you left Cirrus' route, in this case mentioning him by name while passing his church. There's a different line for players who didn't leave Cirrus' route. And we can do that with basically any variable in the script!
(For those who want a total breakdown, the screenshot above works like this:
First line: everyone sees this.
Second line: the code that tells the game only to show anything "inside" it (below and indented) if the player left Cirrus' route
Third line: the piece of script that's shown to players who left Cirrus' route
Fourth line: the piece of code that says "anyone who didn't get to see the third line get to see anything inside this"
Fifth line: the piece of script that's shown to players who didn't leave Cirrus' route
Sixth line: everyone sees this.)
So yes, there will be references to previous things that happened where they're appropriate! We love weaving references to things that happened before into the script, it makes everything feel more alive and responsive to your choices, even if those responses are individually pretty small.

I did not expect it to go in this direction, but am I upset about it? No
Summary: Power is out all throughout the Devildom on an unexpectedly cold night. According to Lucifer, Mammon is out helping the post office, which was exceptionally busy around the holiday season. Of course, they care about their beloved brother, so they do a little extra for when he gets home.

The brothers were all in the living room because there was a severe power outage, and Lucifer wanted the brothers to be together so nothing bad happens. However, Mammon was the only one not there, which worried Beel the most.
"Where is Mammon? Is he lost in the weather?"
Of course, Beel knows that Mammon can retain body heat pretty well, that's the reason why he's considered one of the portable heaters among the brothers aside from the Avatar of Gluttony himself.
"Didn't he say that he was out delivering packages because it's the holidays?" Satan recalls, underneath piles of blankets, although there weren't many because Asmo took most of them.
"Ughh.. I just want the power to turn back on.." Levi complains, staring at his dead game console.
"Beel, be a dear and come here so I can stay warm!" Asmo pleads, almost demands. This is shut down by Belphie immediately as he glares holes into his older brother, clinging onto Beel for dear life.
Beel looks at Lucifer in concern, not focused on the squabble Belphie and Asmo were having.
"Do you think Mammon will be back soon?"
"I'm sure he will be, Beel." Lucifer reassures. Even if it wasn't clear on his face, the eldest was also starting to worry about what Mammon could possibly be doing, but he had faith in the Avatar of Greed.
"Is he delivering packages?" Satan asks Lucifer with a raised eyebrow.
"As far as I know, Diavolo asked Mammon and his crows to help with delivering things for the holidays." Lucifer replies.
"He hasn't done that in a long time, huh?" Levi tilts his head. "Wasn't he the messenger between you and Lord Diavolo before D.D.Ds were a thing?"
"Oh yea, and he would always come back looking unfazed, as if he didn't run miles to there and back." Belphie remembers
"He had his crows do some things too, didn't he? Those little birds always surprise me." Asmo butts in, trying to distract himself from the cold unsuccessfully. He shivers from the cold as he once again tries to get Beel to come over.
Thirty minutes pass and Mammon isn't back yet, and the storm has gradually begun getting stronger. This causes alarm in all the brothers, as they wonder what Mammon was doing, and if he's been caught up in the storm. Things are prepared but notably, food and snacks are made for all the brothers but Beel leaves enough for Mammon to eat a lot, and Belphie makes a spot of blankets and pillows reserved for Mammon.
Eventually, Mammon does come back and he looked absolutely exhausted, as he stumbles into the living room with many layers of winter clothing on. The snow storm was slowly stopping, but the coldness was still there. Despite this, all the brothers get up upon seeing Mammon's return.
"Huh? Oh, he--" Before he could finish his sentence, Mammon is leapt on by Belphie and Asmo. He is barely able to catch his balance as he gives a comforting pat on the backs to the two.
“Heh, missed me?" He grins cheekily.
"Of course we did!" Asmo huffs. "You were out in a snowstorm!"
"A very cold one." Belphie adds on, and Asmo nods in agreement
"Where the hell were you?" Satan asks, upset at how long it took for him to come back. Beel helps Mammon take off his gear and hung it up, not saying much, but it was clear he was just relieved that his brothers were together again.
Mammon's face softens as he sees the concern his brothers had for him. He looks at the the food and snacks laid out. He tries to think of an explanation to give Satan as he sits down on the reserved spot, snuggling under the blankets.
"A few of my crows got caught up in the winds and got buried under the snow. I got ‘em out before they froze to death."
"What if you froze to death, huh?" Levi glares at his big brother, sitting besides him. Mammon pulls him into a side hug and under the blanket
"But I didn't, that's what's important, yea?" Mammon gives a softer smile as he reassures Levi. This fortunately works, as Levi only huffs huffs and leans into the hug, still a bit upset at how Mammon did that. “And besides, I couldn’t just leave my crows outside to die like that.”
Mammon was caught off guard as Lucifer starts to look for signs of injuries, asking him questions and such. When he was finished, he stands up. "Well, I can safely say you haven't suffered any injuries, that’s good.” He gives a small smile.
Mammon just gives a small smile back and a nod. This moment is interrupted when Asmo attempts to cuddle up to Mammon for warmth only for Levi to throw a hissy fit.
As the snow storm recedes, everyone ends up falling asleep and is taken to their rooms Mammon and Lucifer. The two go to Lucifer’s study afterwards with some extra blankets. Lucifer sits in his chair while Mammon sits in the one across from him, a few blankets over him, Lucifer couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of his brother in a blanket cocoon.
Nothing is said at first, as Lucifer is focused on lighting candles so they can see better, but eventually he speaks up.
“Thank you for doing the task, Mammon. I don’t just mean this for Lord Diavolo’s sake, but also mine, and the others.” He smiles, leaning back as he finishes lighting the candles. “I often focus on the times that you make my life harder, that I forgot the times you make my life easier.”
“Yea, you should work on that.” Mammon grins, leaning forward a bit.
“Yes, yes I really should.” Lucifer chuckles. “But I do mean that, genuinely.”
Mammon’s smile softens into something less playful, and more affectionate, as he nods.
“Thanks, bro.”
Lucifer nods in return, leaning back into his chair as he becomes more relaxed.
“Honestly, I was going to search for you in that snow storm if you arrived a minute later.” Lucifer’s eyes narrow. “I know your crows are reliable, but please, if you need assistance from another demon, I can always help you. Is that clear?”
“Crystal.” He chuckles. “Oh, speaking of crystals.” He pulls his blankets down and takes out something from the bag Lucifer noticed he was wearing. The second eldest gives him a red crystal keychain.
“Happy holidays, yea?” Mammon smiles as Lucifer admires the keychain. It was a blood red crystal in gold casing that hung from a golden chain with a clasp at the other end. It looked gorgeous under the candle flames.
“I got everyone gifts. That may or may not have been one of the things that took me so long, I was surprised to see some shops even open.” Mammon continues with a laugh. His laugh was contagious as Lucifer couldn’t help but laugh along with him.
“Thank you, Mammon. Happy holidays.” He smiles with a small nod, and the Avatar of Greed nods back, as he goes to stand up with all the blankets still around him. Lucifer made a mental note to himself to get Mammon something in return later in the week.
“Now if you'll excuse me, The Great Mammon needs sleep, night Lucifer”
“Goodnight, Mammon.”
“Make sure to sleep at a reasonable time.” Mammon reminds, looking at his older brother in worry and seriousness.
“Yes, I will.” Lucifer sighs
“Good, night Lucifer!”
The door shuts and Lucifer stares at his paperwork and then out the window. The Devildom has returned to it’s normal darkness, no snow or anything. He tries to get some paperwork done before going to bed, which he hopes will be at a reasonable time.
Lucifer makes his way to the bedroom after finishing paperwork, only pushing himself to go to sleep. He does one more routine check on everyone to ensure that everyone is sleeping. Everyone was thankfully asleep.
He stops at Mammon’s room, and quietly walks over to his bed. The blankets have long been discarded on the floor and to the side of him, as they were no longer needed. He quietly puts the blankets on the couch or other pieces of furniture. He can’t help but feel a little sentimental and nostalgic as he rubs his baby brother’s cheek. He smiles to himself as Mammon leans into the touch the same way he always has, ever since he was a young angel.
He simply gives Mammon a forehead kiss before being on his way, gently closing the door behind him.

Hi, hi, hello, I am here once again to sound absolutely insane while arguing something buddie, this time from Buck's side because I haven't done one on him in a while. I think this is a Buck needs to choose defense, but who knows really ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Okay, I've talked about this before, but Oliver is a really big guy, he's taller than the rest of the cast so we don't see Buck looking up a whole lot. In conversations where Buck would be in a more vulnerable position, they put all of the involved sitting down so they are on the same eye level, when he tells Abby about the catfish guy, when he talks to Maddie after the bombing, when he talks to Maddie after Red dies, when he finds out about Daniel, when he talks to Maddie after the thing with Jonah, when he talks to Bobby after the lightning.

Or they're both standing up, when he talks to Bobby before he quits before the tsunami, when he talks to Bobby after the lawsuit, when he tells Bobby he is one of the most important people in his life, when he tells Eddie about the fight with his parents, when he talks to Bobby after the crane, when he’s helping Eddie fix the walls (as I was typing this I noticed the trend of having him sitting down with Maddie and standing up with Bobby, which makes sense considering how much shorter than Oliver Jennifer is and how Oliver and Peter are just a few inches apart).

Or they have Buck being the only one standing up, or just at a higher level, so that he has the high ground in sense, when he tells the 118 about the thing with Daniel, when he yells at his parents, when he talks to Maddie after he messes up with Red, when he breaks up with Taylor, but it is a trend to not have him look up at people. (All of these have more examples, I just didn't feel like screenshotting every major Buck scene lol)

People he does look up to in vulnerable moments, moments actually end up leading to a fight? Ali and Taylor. He looks up at Ali when she's talking about not understanding what the job means and when he tells Taylor he kissed someone else. So he looks up at his love interests. Before a fight, but still looking up. Ali is the most intense example I could find in my quick skimming of the scenes I could think of, but since Taylor is standing up and he's sitting down, it counts.

This does nothing for my point but I do want to point it out. He looks up at Eddie before the confrontation at the gym lol. Sure that ends with Buck towering over Eddie, but it starts with him looking up at him and fits the trend (or actually starts it? Considering this happens before Ali or Taylor lol).

I could be wrong here, maybe there are other moments where he's looking up and I just can't think of them right now, but Eddie is pretty much the only person he consistently looks up to, when he clears with Bobby for Chris to stay at the station (not about him but he's looking up), the Hildy incident (this one is just funny but it happens), when he tells Eddie it would’ve been better if he had been shot, after Chim leaves to look for Maddie, after he dies. And it's interesting to have those last two scenes because he's going to Eddie for advice and they decided to literally have him look up at Eddie.

Conversations with Eddie fit all types of categories when it comes to the two of them because they are best friends, just focus on these ones tho (you can read this for thoughts on framing in multiple scenes tho)
"But Anna you've said this before in at least 3 different posts already" I know, I know, and I have a point, I promise. 
I like taking season 6 knowledge and recontextualizing the previous seasons. What does Buck want in season 6? Answers. From the dude at the happiness convention to “I’m the guy with the answers, I kinda like that”. But it’s not crazy to say that Buck has been looking for whatever this answer is his whole life, but the main thing is that Buck keeps looking for answers outside of what he already has, the choice he makes is to look for something else to make things make sense and for someone else to tell him so he can pretend he's not responsible for the consequences. There’s a whole other discussion here and I was talking about this yesterday, but Buck doesn’t really make choices in his life (bisexual king 🫶), he fell into firefighting, he tripped into every relationship he had, he didn’t pick his apartment, he still hasn’t picked a couch. 
Okay, but why does that relate to the whole looking-up thing? I don’t know if this makes sense, but I think in a way he expects Eddie to have the answers in a way that’s a bit, not excessive, but like, bordering on too much? Like, for example, the way he takes what Eddie tells him before the tsunami and runs with it, the whole just move on thing that he is still doing (I’m kinda fascinated about the way that the end of the cemetery conversation gives the same message that Eddie tried to push onto him there and we all know how that ended for Eddie), the whole “somehow we manage to just suck it up, why can’t you?” and “a lot of I’s in there” and “you’re making it about you? again?” that does make Buck act as if having feelings about traumatic events means he’s making it about himself, makes him selfish, that makes him act as if he needs just to push through. He keeps following Eddie’s lead at all times. And I think that is something that needs to be addressed in some way before they can have a relationship. I do think post-lawsuit Eddie is trying, post-therapy Eddie is trying even harder to not lead them wrong or dismiss Buck’s feelings, and if Eddie asked Buck out, chances are he would say yes, but it would leave the question of whether he’s just following Eddie’s lead. Because Buck keeps tripping into relationships. We don't see him ask anyone out, we don't see Buck make the decision. The only way to fight this is to have Buck be the one to march to Eddie and go “I want this, do you want me?” and hope he’s doing the right thing while knowing he is the one who went for it. 
And like, I don’t really think Eddie would ask Buck, not for lack of wanting, but because he runs from fights he’s not sure he can win, dude retreats back to safety like no one else, and taking a leap with Buck is not safe. But, hey, we’re supposed to believe Buck is the one who keeps running into unsafe situations, so sure, have Buck do it. 
And I think the cemetery can be used as a start for that, because Buck keeps trying to get Eddie to tell him what to do, he keeps looking at Eddie and waiting for him to just give him the answers, but Eddie already retreated from the fight, he’s all “whatever you say, bud” so Buck thinks he’s doing something Eddie agrees on, but what Eddie wants is the opposite, the shift in the way Eddie is handling that conversation is really obvious and to have Buck go against it could be used in an interesting way. 
And the cemetery scene itself opposes the whole looking-up thing because Eddie refuses to keep looking at Buck while Buck keeps poking him to get him to look. Buck is all “*tugging on his sleeve* tell me I'm right tell me I'm right tell me I’m right” and Eddie is all “you’re right buddy *narrators voice* he doesn’t think he’s right at all”.

And Eddie is locked out of making changes in the relationship in a sense, because Buck basically told him “this woman is the one” so why would he risk the friendship when Buck has made it clear what he wants? In Eddie's head, it's a fight that's already lost, so why would he jeopardize the part of the relationship he does have for something he thinks is hopeless?
But Buck doesn’t have that, I think right now, the power is in Buck’s hands, Buck needs to realize he has it and Buck needs to make the choice to use it. 
Mr. Human Calculator I Have The Answers Now needs to accept that life has a level of unpredictability and go for it anyway. Start fighting the current he put himself in and getting the things he does wants not the things he thinks he should want.

a/n: happy halloween everyone! highkey one of my favorite holidays, so here’s my small way of celebrating!

☻ why is he getting aggressive
☻ he’s the kind to act tough and puff his chest out and everything to “protect you” but this crumbles so fast pls
☻ i feel like he’s the kind to go “what-WHAT WHY” every time there’s a loud noise
jeonghan:
☻ very lax, so i feel like even if a jumpscare worked he’d laugh it off right after
☻ his eyes get wide from shock for a second or two and yeah, his heart is racing but it’s nothing to him
☻ the type to tease you if you’re scared but also watch to check if you’re okay
joshua:
☻ walks pretty relaxed with his arm around your shoulder
☻ chuckles at the lights and sounds and his hand massages the shoulder it’s resting on when he feels you tensing
☻ ngl how could you feel scared when his muscles are holding you so confidently, you feel so safe

☻ laughs at every jumps are pls
☻ he doesn’t really take the haunted house too seriously and maybe it’s also because he sees the small details that take him out of the immersion too
☻ will imitate a statue of a zombie that he sees
☻ i feel like he’d really calm your nerves with his antics and it’d really just be a good time

☻ somehow convinces one of the vampires inside the haunted house to horanghae in a picture with him
☻ even if someone’s about to scare him he just does that little claw hand gesture and they’re like ?? okay ??

☻ his body takes a screenshot when there’s a successful jumpscare idk how else to explain it LOL
☻ but i feel like wonwoo getting scared has about a 15% chance of happening though
☻ has to be a very well timed scare

☻ says he’s not scared but he’s walking at 1.5x speed
☻ little and mildly annoyed “hey >:(“ when a ghost pops up from behind

☻ tried to protect you but also shies away from anything that looks like it’ll suddenly move
☻ i can imagine the little “imsorryimsorryimsorrypls- imsorryimsorry” leaving his lips as you both carefully walk past something suspiciously still
☻ will let out that dolphin scream when he feels like something is touching his ankle bc he can’t help it
☻ apologizes to you too for yelling and bumping into if he flinched too hard after like babe-

☻ you have to protect him, for he may be a little faint-hearted
☻ you’ll most definitely hear a small yelp or scree when something moves in the dark
☻ i can imagine the whiny little “please, please, please” as he (a man taller than you) tries to hide behind you
☻ expect your hand to be in a death grip the whole time

☻ he’s such a wildcard sometimes lol
☻ as we can see from that one gose episode, he’ll scare a haunted house employee back
☻ will tell you, “watch this, bLaRgh”
☻ he giggles right after (absolutely adorable) and ngl, it kinda soothes the tension of the atmosphere of the whole thing

☻ he’ll gasp when a ghost pops up but immediately sigh right after in annoyance
