For anyone not running in the same Gaming News circles I do: last week, Naoki Yoshida (aka Yoshi-P) did an interview to coincide with some early previews of Final Fantasy XVI, and during part of it he mentioned that he's uncomfortable with the term "JRPG" and wouldn't describe XVI as such, because to him, he can't shake the feeling that it's a discriminatory description.

Some people took this as another check in the "XVI is going to be Elder Scrolls: Game of Thrones instead of an actual Final Fantasy" column, but other people pointed out that, especially during the 7th console generation (360/PS3/Wii), JRPG was largely used as a derogatory term. Or at the very least, JRPGs typically got worse treatment than their WRPG counterparts. Even when coverage was positive, it would still be peppered with "oh those WACKY Japanese and their incomprehensible ANIMAY stories!" Hell, just last year, in the wake of Elden Ring being The Video Game, Western developers who worked on games like Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West were going "But the UI is bad! It's bad, it's so bad! Why do people like this game with this... bad UI!", with the pretty clear subtext that they wanted to say "this game is made wrong compared to the way WE make games" but knowing better than to actually say that.

In response to the claim that "games media was shitty towards Japan 15 years ago", games media figureheads from that time crawled out of the woodwork to go "THAT'S INSANE, YOU'RE INSANE, WE NEVER DID THAT, YOU'RE WRONG, WHAT EVEN IS A 7TH CONSOLE GENERATION, NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THAT MEANS, ANIME AVIS AT IT AGAIN". This was met with actual clips from G4- the TV channel that was all about video games- that were just... insanely racist:

The guy doing the actual review, noted coke-fiend Adam Sessler, decided to respond to this, and rather than say something like "15 years ago was a different time" or "ok that was bad but I think you're cherry picking to support your argument*" or even a deflection like "man I didn't write the reviews, I just read them for work", he instead chose:

Please remember this entire thing was kicked off by the producer of Final Fantasy XVI going "I thought JRPG was a discriminatory thing for the longest time"

Patch 6.4 MSQ Reaction

Here are my first thoughts, opinions, and overall reactions to the 6.4 MSQ. Since I had a lot to say about Pandaemonium Anabaseios, those reactions were written in a separate post, HERE. Note that these are my personal thoughts, and not meant to be a critique on the MSQ story in any objective manner.

I’m in love with the opening scenes of the patch! The bonding with Zero over eating the spiciest ass curry imaginable was fantastic, and it spoke to me so personally, as my favorite food is Indian curry, and it’s something my mom and I have always loved eating together. So that’s probably way different from most people’s experience, but I took a ton of screenshots of this scene because it felt so personal for me.

Then we got the Estinien fan service scene and ohhhhhh boy, I was DYING laughing and giggling at it!! This is because I’m not an Estinien shipper myself, but I have some friends who are, and I knew that they would die of thirst. Then I got to thinking: WHY can’t we get a scene like THAT with Aymeric?? Throw us Aymeric shippers a bone, I beg of you Yoshi-P!!

Maybe the best part of that scene was Zero’s reaction… Ma’am please!! You are killing me over here!!

Then we got to go back to Labyrinthos briefly and I am just personally so excited for Hali to be coming home to Labyrinthos and Sharlayan soon, but alas, I had to play the patch on Yume, so it didn’t have the same feeling as it would be if it was Hali being there. Nonetheless the brief Sharlayan scenes were really good.

Fourchenault’s backside comments are going to spark a thousand smut fics, I just know it…

I’m so happy that Krile seems to be more in the spotlight going forward, as I love her and I’ve always felt that they’ve done her dirty by always having her stay behind. I’m glad that it looks like she’s going to get more love soon!

Also glad that Erenville made a cameo, as I find him to be a very cool character and like an Everyman. He gives a good perspective that kinda gets lost sometimes when the Scions are always talking with the leaders of nations and such.

The Aetherfont is very likely my new all time favorite dungeon in game. It’s absolutely gorgeous, the music was great as usual, and the fights were really fun! Once Hali gets there, I’m going to take a ton of gposes there!

The Thancred cameo was really nice, but my only beef is that he leaves immediately afterwards. WHY?!?! I’m so annoyed at that.

Probably my favorite part of the patch, storywise anyway, was the Garlemald section. I’m SO glad they are finally addressing how Garlemald and the Garlean people are going to rebuild and their future going forward. It was a nice touch, and I appreciate how Vrtra was able to come up with a great compromise and to let the Garleans have some dignity. Very good stuff in my opinion.

Then the Thirteenth Moon section was pretty much how I expected it would be. Meet the lopporrits and have a cute scene again, open portal, find Azdaja, fight Golbez, yadda yadda yadda.

I will say though, I loved the Golbez trial! The mechanics were challenging yet fun, and I actually enjoyed it very much. The gamer in me was pleased, regardless of the writer in me being just meh about it all.

What I wasn’t expecting, however, was that this Void story arc would still continue into 6.5. To be perfectly honest, this has been my least favorite part of the entire MSQ, in the whole game. Yes, it has trumped everything else as the stuff I least care about. Outside of Zero being an awesome character and wanting Azdaja freed and brought home, I really could care less about everything else. It still feels like an anime filler arc, and though it has gotten a bit better, I’m still not sold. I just want to get to 7.0 like immediately. And if it has anything else to do with the Thirteenth, I might scream. I’m so sorry if anyone is liking this arc, but I just can’t get into it myself.

With all of that being said, I very much loved Pandaemonium way more, and that’s where my mind has been since I finished it yesterday. Therefore, that’s all I’ll say about the MSQ, and I have probably much more to say about Pandaemonium in my next post. Can Yoshi-P please stop justifying skin colour changes in his games with awkward walls of text?

First it's that "It's fantasy, but also reality."

But now it's "It's fantasy, so we're doing what we want."

The FF16 one is at least understandable considering the subject matters the game deals with, but it's still imperfect because you can do PoC without that baggage.

Saying "we mean no harm" after all of those flimsy excuses with Y'Shtola feels so dumb to me.

I can absolutely understand the 2.0 lighting issues. Fine. That change wasn't that extreme.

And I even defended this because in a bunch of in-game artwork in ShB she's still pretty tan, but I'll believe it when we see a concept art saying she's by design supposed to be tanned, not PoC.

I'll even believe they pay this detailed attention to character design.

It's so annoying because in a new panel for Dawntrail they also say they're paying special attention to PoC representation for this expansion because they've not always done it right in the past.

And there they mentioned it's fantasy, but there is the need to still respect the irl cultures they draw from.

It's a inconsistent mess because whitewashing is still fairly common and "they're just tan" is a pretty common excuse that Japan isn't immune from either, even if it isn't entirely delibrate or conscious. (In Japanese context there is also making characters "more Asian" by removing their tan.)

And then there are some of the disrespectful outfits in Mogstation.

I still get the sense the underlying implication is that the game got more popular and Y'Shtola's tan became "less appealing" from a marketing standpoint, but they just can't say it.

But hey, going by a good faith interpretation, they better be consistent with it.

Everyone should just be tan after Dawntrail.

Then I might believe it.

FFXIV has many good to great PoC characters with complex, complete storylines, but it still falls into some pretty annoying tropes.

Most of them either die (Teledji, Ilberd, Conrad, Ahewann), are written out after their story is basically complete (Hermes, Lahabrea, Ericthonius, Lolorito) or are pushed to minor roles or were minor roles to begin with (Raubahn, Pipin, Gaius, Arenvald, Lyna).

Truth is, Y'Shtola is the only character that truly has gone through this pretty noticably, so this adds credence to her "just being tan", but I think she's also the only main character who could be 100% read as PoC along with any PoC WoL designs because she was "tan" for so long.

Currently, only Arenvald, Raubahn, Pipin, Gaius, Vytra, Cyella and Lyna could potentially become relevant in the future without "bringing them back" and as said, half of these are pretty minor characters or also have pretty complete stories.

Erenville looks to have a more major role in Dawntrail, at least.

And I think Cyella and the entire group on the First might end up getting a secondary plotline restoring the 13th along with Zero after Zeromus is defeated.

(That 6.5 screenshot is super intriguing.)

XIV is probably better about PoC than 90% of popular fantasy, but it still has its flaws and wierd justifications like this really don't help.

I dropped a few more chapters of Fal's story into my Ao3 - of particular note, my first two batches of Eorzean dirty limericks, which have already garnered 2 and 4 notes in an hour, respectively. Which is actually pretty good for my being a total recluse in the FFXIV community, and unknown in the Ao3 community (does it even have a community? I don't even know.)

In other news, I never bothered with the 7.0 Benchmark, but I guess that may have been a good thing considering Yoshi-P apologized for it. I know they said they promised to light dark-skinned characters better, which could go badly (please don't whitewash Fal,) but frankly I'm mostly worried about them sanding off those statuesque face #4 cheekbones.

!!!! I actually got interaction I'm screaming-

Ok, so basically it's a complete rewrite/reworking of the Mario franchise, pulling from all corners of the lore and universes! Some lore takes precedent over others (ex: mainline games like Galaxy have more lore implications than the Mario and Luigi or Paper Mario games), but it's pretty much me trying to pull the whole thing into one cohesive narrative.

It started as me just redesigning the characters for fun, and then it turned into a whole thing! I wanted to make Peach look more like her namesake, and it all sort of spiraled.

Examples of changes include pretty much writing off the Yoshi's Island games as adventures after the Mario brothers end up in the kingdom, as Yoshi's Island has weird time properties to explain why they were babies in the events of the games. I also brought back a lot of older characters, like Blue Bowser and Rosalina's brother!

It's still ongoing, but p much I'm having a lot of fun trying to weave a narrative that makes sense for all the characters involved while changing things to make sense as to how I see the characters (like Bowser not being a heartless monster bent on destroying and conquering and Rosalina being much more tragic than Nintendo really acknowledges). So yeah!!! That's the gist of it. Any and all questions about it or any characters are more than welcome :))))

I am of the firm fucking belief Yoshi-P went to Ishikawa-san and dropped this man on her desk and went ‘rehabilitate him’.  Ishikawa-san looked at Zenos, looked at Yoshi-P, and went ‘I can’t rehabilitate him, but I can at least make him viable.’, and Yoshi-P said ‘Do it.’

So much potential!  This man shows up in Rhalgr’s Reach and BEATS EVERYONE! INCLUDING US, THE WARRIOR OF LIGHT!  We’re fresh off ensuring Gaius (presumably) has a nice dirt nap, ending the Dragonsong War, kicking Nidhogg’s ass, killing Asicans, annihilating primals, we’re the beloved hero of Eorzea, and look at what happens?!  The severe psychological implications ALONE are most delicious fanfiction fodder!  The political implications even more!  This man was touted to be a fucking tactical genius, subjugated Doma, was up to his neck in unethical and fucked up experimentation, KICKS OUR ASS AGAIN A SECOND TIME, pretty much enables Fordola and had he been allowed to continue doing so we probably would have been given the most hyper-violent couple in FFXIV and the mayhem would have been glorious!

INSTEAD HE BASICALLY SITS ABOUT IN THE BACKGROUND FOR ALMOST THE ENTIRE DAMN GAME LIKE A FUCKING BOND VILLAIN (Bloefield to be more specific do not @ me I grew up watching James Bond I’ve seen every one with the exception of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and I know the gist of that one).  ALL HE NEEDED WAS A FUCKING CAT TO GO WITH THE SAMUARI SWORD GOLFBAG.

I was disappointed.  And it’s not just Zenos, it’s the entire Galvus family.  I was personally looking forward to quite a bit of content (in game!) regarding them.  Hell I wanted to personally beat the shit out of Varis! While he was still living!  I wanted to kill the man personally but I had to settle for Cid’s crazed mind palace while unlocking Bozja!

And like so many characters in Stormblood, Zenos would have come off a lot better if they’d just released the background information IN THE GAME instead of well after the fact OUTSIDE it. 

I admit my interest was stoked when it was revealed he could possess primals.  (to the tune of Hear, Feel, Think... What. The. Fuck.), but then he just came off all creepy stalker and the moment was lost. 

The body jumping...that was a surprise.  Legit.  And then once again he just decided to lurk in the background (which to be fair, he couldn’t really do anything else) during Shadowbringers.  Elidibus is running around in his body, he’s outside of Illsabard, so he’s gotta hoof it the old fashioned way.  I would have loved to have read something on that. 

My interest got stoked again inbetween ShB and EW, but from a historical standpoint.  ROME IS BURNING AND NERO FIDDLED AWAY WHILE IT DID (side note: Nero actually didn’t fiddle while Rome burned, he rolled up his sleeves and actually helped with the firefighting).  Zenos came back, he reclaimed his body--but surprise, he’s got jack shit interest in the throne or in ruling!  He just wants another throwdown with us!

(Enter Fandaniel.  I agree with @autumnslance​‘s take on him, he and Zenos worked well together.)  It’s also at this point where okay, if Zenos is going to be the creepy stalker of the WoL, let him be the creepy stalker.  It’s nice, simple and clean.  Fandaniel’s surely the bigger problem.  Right?  Right?  RIGHT?!

27. You now have the ability to add in one character and one dungeon from any Final Fantasy title prior to XIV, who/what do you pick and why?

I get that if it was gonna happen it would have been during Stormblood but this game is in desperate need of an ex-imperial general who was genetically engineered and experimented upon so that she could perform magic and then subsequently defected and fell in love with a thief treasure hunter with the resistance is all I’m fucking saying.

As for dungeons I am still kinda salty that in an expansion rife with FFIV love that featured 2 of the iconic dungeons from that game (albeit one of those was really in name only *side eyes Tower of Babil not using The Music*), the Giant of Babil was nowhere to be seen--that’s still one of the iconic sequences in the franchise, certainly in the SNES era. but I comfort myself with how at least it looks like we’re getting Theo & Co for the trial storyline this time around.

the Via Purifico from FFX is an honorable mention though, it’s such an underrated dungeon imo and I actually brought it into my personal worldbuilding in Giseleverse as being the secret dungeon beneath the Vault that people get disappeared to. It’s actually where Aymeric was imprisoned after confronting Thordan during 3.0 MSQ and it’s going to figure into that post-Dragonsong Law & Order: Special Heretics Unit fic with Ysayle that’s on my long list of things I wanna write (the Inquisition finds out she’s alive and being sheltered by Aymeric and puts her on trial for her crimes).

30. What do you hope for in the next expansion?

That Gridania actually gets some plot focus, hopefully being forced to reckon with its many, many issues the way Limsa, Ul’dah, and Ishgard have. I mean my Elezen is a Wildwood who only got that way after being reborn from another shard and I started in Ul’dah so I literally have no dog in this fight but it really feels like the Elementals clashing with the revamped cosmology for ARR resulted in Gridania basically getting put on a bus, and I don’t think it helps at all that the Scions who had it as their territory got virtually no screen time after the ARR story branches converge, then we lost them both.

The Tank role quests helped give Kan-E some much needed fleshing out but it’s wild to me how this major city-state gets so little attention. I shouldn’t feel like I chose “correctly” as an Ul’dah player. And the little I did see of that place on class quests made me feel like the place is long overdue for a reckoning the way Merlwyb finally got called to account for the tribal issues Limsa got at the end of the ShB patches. That society is actually so fucked up once you look past the pretty trees

Also like...as a severe understatement I have a lot more faith in Yoshi-P, Ishikawa et al than Blizzard but previous experience makes me Wary when MMOs wrap up major, years-long storylines and start having to come up with new plots. I don’t want to see this game take a nosedive the way WoW did when they ran out of WC RTS plots to followup on post-Wrath of the Lich King. I also hope the next expansion sticks the landing because I have the unpopular opinion that EW peaked with Elpis and never really recovered (UT was just...not good)

Also also: Radz-at-Han housing district, outdoor item limits raised for smalls, “fc room” type instanced housing in Fortemps Manor or the Meghaduta, and something better than this absolute horseshit lottery system

For some strange reason I keep being recommended the article/posts about the comments Yoshi-P made in relation to race in Final Fantasy 16 some time ago.

Guess since the game is releasing soon, people are bringing it up again.

But rereading what he said, he never says there weren't any PoC in medieval times or that there won't be any in the game (we see two in promotional material), just that the diversity won't be all-encompassing due to the European inspiration and the theme of racial isolation being part of the game's story.

I think the real issue here is the super rigid compliance to these two ideas.

That's the dumb part because:

A) You can still keep this inspiration and the themes with more PoC characters in the main cast.

B) It's fantasy, who cares. The fun of it is that you can do whatever you want with it in the first place. And yes, fictional minorities have pretty bad precedent in terms of portrayal and this principle can lead to stereotyping and cultural appropriation, but it's still fantasy, something, well, not rigidly beholden to reality.

But I at least want to look at what he said without misinterpretations and I feel like I misread his comments.

This said, at this point, the only reason I'm excited for the story of FFXVI in general is the previous work of the writer/developers: Heavensward is a solid story.

The trailers by themselves haven't really given me any interesting story hooks and the art style leans too much towards hyper-realism for me for it to really stand out.

It's pretty, but not in a very interesting way.

The former is good because at least none of the trailers seems to be spoiling the story and the latter I don't really care that much about to make any difference as long as everything else is good, but to me right now the only real selling point/interesting part of the project is the team behind it and some of the actually smart things they have said and details about the development I've learned from interviews (and I guess to a smaller extent, the music, which, from what I've heard so far sounds very good, which is expected from Soken).

If it weren't for the development background, this'd look like pretty generic dark fantasy with maybe some good music.

But I like that the game seems to have gotten (had) an healthy development cycle, so I think it at least won't be a broken game.

I like that while they seem to want to increase the size of their audience, ultimately the developers just decided to do what they wanted instead to trying to please any specific audience.

And I like that they don't feel the need to be tied to the past and instead opted to evolve the formula of the games, and again, do their own thing.

So, as said, the actual development background promises a very solid game, but none of the surface-level promotional material is all that gripping to me.

We'll see.

Pre HW - > HW: Rogue, ‘til the come of the revolution and she was called back.  Post HW - > SB: Tethra contracts with Bakasura in order to give her the strength to liberate Ala Mhigo, to give her the ferocity needed to liberate her people from their oppressors. Sheenshrouds for the first time at the Wall during Ilberd’s attack. 

SB (during the revolution) she returns home after the clarion call and the wall came down as a mercenary, she’s Very Despaircore here, she should be having fun liberating her homeland but instead she’s  uh losing her fucking mind and cannibalizing the corpses of friend and foe alike because a monster is pulling her strings

she’s eventually given her DRK soulstone around this point by a roving viera from dalmasca who saw that it would heal her heart as it had healed his own

she goes on to be DRK and figure her shit out, stand up when it matters and means something

i have thought...so much about her Fray...and will probably be writing and posting the fic i wanted to make of Tethra confronting the DRK 80 quest and what it means to her to overcome her trauma

i fucking love dark knight, i love this stupid cat
