being an unstranger!things fic, devoted to giving the most interesting character in the entire damn series a more developed backstory, fleshing out the characters around him, and stripping out all the drek and chaff and absolute fucking nonsensical bullshittery generated by the fantastical aspects of the series, and instead focusing on the stories and relationships of the people of Hawkins.

consider the following a thesis statement.

prologue

Nothing has ever happened in Hawkins, and nothing ever will.

Nothing that couldn’t happen in any other small town, at least. Hawkins is everywhere and nowhere, a cross-section of small town USA in the eighties, coloured in the wearily wholesome shades of middle America, instead of the dusty ochre of the sunbleached southwest; the oppressive, eternal grey of the north Pacific coast; or the damp, dark green rot of the deep south—every version of the same town dying the same slow death to the creep of modernity, the heady rush of progress, and the grinding indifference of good old American capitalism.

In Hawkins, the energy lab is—was—just an energy lab, just research and development, and when a poorly covered up chemical leak killed one local and caused the cancer of however many others, its closure was a pyrrhic victory that took the local economy down with it. The lab closed up, the lab rats left, and the town whose industries had mostly existed to serve them suddenly found themselves with no one to serve but themselves, and the empty shell of a building too specialized to be of interest to anyone else, unless those interests were underage drinking, illicit drugs, and crude graffiti. 

When a hasty developed and shoddily constructed mega mall was greenlit by the town council to try and draw people back and drum up new business, the fire that resulted seemed like punishment for the sheer hubris of any attempt to resist the ultimate fate of smalltown America. Whatever insurance paid out was subsequently gobbled up by the lawsuits that followed, and those whose loved ones were killed in the fire used whatever the class action got them to uproot their lives and flee far, far away, to other towns with different versions of the same problems.

There’s nothing remarkable about Hawkins. It is an unremarkable place filled with unremarkable people, and even its tragedies are mundane in the scope of smalltown American tragedies. Galveston. Centralia. Hinkley. Flint. Things like this have happened before, and things like this will happen again. The terror of Hawkins is everywhere and nowhere. Its dramas are small and their actors merely human.

1. Are you named after anyone?

In terms of my deadname yes- I was named after my mother, and it was (as often is for spanish families) in combination with my middle name, which is after my grandmother.

My current name isn't after a family member, but has a symbolic relation to my deadname.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Maybe a month ago because I was worried I hurt my girlfriend's feelings :'D

3. Do you have kids?

Nope. I like kids, but no desire to have my own.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

I think I used to be more so. These days it tends to come out only in two ways: if I am currently with someone I know very well and who knows I am not being mean-spirited, or if I am with a stranger and they are being an ass lol.

5. What sports do you play/have played?

I was a very active kid and would do all the sports! Though my favorites were soccer, and martial arts, tae kwon do and shinkendo. I have been meaning to get back into martial arts when I have more time.

6. Whats the first thing you notice about people?

I think its a tie between the persons overall face shape/facial features and their voice.

7. What's your eye colour?

Brown lol deep brown but still light enough that its not hard to see my pupils. Unless under a black light apparently lmao

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Not sure why these are mutually exclusive? But happy endings regardless of genre lol

9. Any special talents?

Art things mostly. I'm especially skilled at drawing figures and some animals. I'm a decent singer although that is completely untrained lol

I also have a strange talent for making puns completely unintentionally so they come out very sincerely and then 5 seconds later I laugh at it

Arizona

11. What are your hobbies?

Drawing extremely self indulgent art, curating playlists for OCs-both for drawing noise and to imagine cool amvs in my head about them, singing and playing guitar, playing video games and occasionally blogging about them, watching old animes and reading old mangas

12. Do you have pets?

One fluffball tortie named Pumpkin who I really ought to post more pictures of. There are plans for a kitten-puppy duo soon though now that we live in a house lol

13. How tall are you?

I'm just going to say about 5' since I have apparently already begun shrinking LOL;;

14. Favorite subject in school?

Aside from art, I have always loved history-particularly the period from about the 1100s to the 1700s, Music, and P.E.

15. Dream job?

I mean I want to just make web comics, play music, sing, and maybe make some video game lets plays

But since capitalism is a thing I'm aiming for a day-job of catalogging video game archives lol

How to describe this masterpiece by @preludeinz and @carryonstarkid beyond a simple YOU MUST READ IT?

It makes me shiver for many different reasons.

The first and most obvious being how well the cold environment is described, genuinely shuddered a couple of times and actually it’s pretty warm here!

The others are more to do with how precisely this fic puts you in the headspace of each of the brothers. There’s a shiver of nerves at the lack of info, the sick shiver of anticipation as John is on the edge of jumping into something terrifying, the goosebumpy horrifying description of what swirling snow does to his mental state… I could witter on but you’re best off reading it yourself without me spoiling.

Just have a warm drink handy, perhaps.

Gets a bit sweary in places (not that anyone would blame the boys in the circumstances, they are exactly what cursing was invented for!!) but just mentioning in case that bothers you.

10. has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? has your own writing haunted you? what does that mean to you?

In the context of my work, I think haunting means either a piece of work which I released into the wild only half tamed; or a peice that, when rereading years later, I realise was actually therapy.

In these contexts, the work I did on Baby Bestiary 2 haunts me because the editor was a nightmare and I don't think what was released reflects my style, intent or ability to its fullest.

FF/Titan Modern-ish AU also haunts me. It was written the year after my Father died, and reading back I can see so many echos of where he appears in the story. There's a scene between Elo and Johann where Johann is talking about having fixed Elo's motorbike; she's bashful about the money he's spent, and he tells her she's worth it to keep her safe. And this scene always takes me viscerally back to a time where I was sat in my Dad's van outside my house, in the dark with the rain hammering on the roof, and he's passing me a £100 in £50 notes and he's getting cross with me because I wouldn't take it, and he tells me the same thing Johann tells Elo - that I'm worth it if it helps take care of me.

In context of other people's work, things that haunt me are half-finished stories, stories I read a long time ago and can only remember random snippets from, and things that connected so hard they live rent-free, such as the last chapter in a_moment_of_dawn by PreludeInZ (full fic) were John and his father, Jeff, are talking about grief.

From What Alexis Did Next, Kallos, a bartender/ ex-healer who appears for ~500 words, still struggles with unresolved guilt over the fact that he was unable to save his first wife, Gwendolyn, after she was mortally injured in battle.

Kallos is such a minor character, he doesn't even have a surname, Gwendolyn never comes comes up in conversation, and the only reason we know he has healing arts is because he helps Alexis, the protagonist, after she's injured.

Can you tell me what DA:O mods you use? I'm interested to play it, but I know it probably plays better when modded.

Hey there! If you’re playing DA:O for the first time, I recommend that you use only Qwinn’s Ultimate Dragon Age: Origins Fixpack on your first playthrough so you can experience Bioware’s vision (with a ton of bugs fixed).

That said, you’re here for mod recs, so let’s take a look at the mods I use.

A quick note: These mods cater to my personal tastes, enhancing the gameplay experience and graphics without making wild lore-unfriendly changes. I’m generally not a fan of companion edits, but there are of course many of those available if that’s to your taste. I also like to tone down the sexualisation of female outfits. YMMV on these mods.

My favourite mods are very spoilery so I won’t list them here, but I still have a lot to recommend! Under a cut for length.

I'm playing baby's first dnd game in a week or so, any tips?

Depends, are you DMing? haha. Honestly just have fun. Every group is a little different- some will want to do more RP heavy stuff, others might be a bit awkward about those things and are more about combat & strategy. If you’re shy about it, you could always play a character who are themselves shy or an ‘actions speak louder than words’ type. Just feel it out and don’t be nervous. Its a fun game with your friends like a game of monopoly or something. Oh, also, perception checks are your best friend.
