Jurgita Erminaitė-Šimkuvienė is a Lithuanian conceptual jewellery designer.
Jurgita and I met seven years ago, when I first came to Lithuania. I saw a piece of jewellery in a book and wrote to her how much I loved it. We met and here she was - young, beautiful, blue-eyed, understated and modest, pulling out a few photos of the most interesting works I’ve seen for a long time.Much of her jewellery cannot be worn, although she works with “jewels” - precious and semi-precious stones, amber, silver gold… creating unexpected little masterpieces, highly original and collected by museums. Yes, of course she has made earrings and brooches but her main aim always is to create a sculpture.
There has been a recent article about Jurgita and her new work (it is in Lithuanian but I will still attach it for my Lithuanian friends). Jurgita’s creations are unusual: when she started her university’s arts course she was sent to a metal workshop. She cried from despair but had quickly realised that it was a god-sent opportunity. The teacher used to allow students to chose what they wanted to do and which metal they want to use. Melting and moulding different metals was a chance to learn, so when she came to her jewellery projects, she felt easy with materials and knew all the metals’ characters and peculiarities, she felt more like an engineer.
People wonder sometimes why her jewellery is not “decorative”, it is not plonked on a body to make it look better, it is there as an idea, an inspiration, an amulet… She does it for human beings, but the body-object relationship is different, you admire the objects and objects reflect and protect you in return.We keep in touch, her kids grow but her mind remains fresh and creative. It’s wonderful to know.

He gave it to me before he passed and maybe this is where my watch fascination began. I love kinetic, or solar watches and any old pocket watches. It blows my mind how a craftsman can work so small! First of all, these are not a functional watches, they are for adornment only. This auction is for a one of a kind Cuff-link Set made with two Wrist Watch Movements originally made over a century ago 15 jewels each. They are a unique bronze color and have been adorned with 1 Red Swarovski Crystal each. Adorable and mounted on silver plated bases. I promise when you wear it heads will turn. Cufflinks are 3/4' wide have the look of a unique vintage object. This mix of metals and gears with a bit of bling from the crystal is simply mesmerizing. So here is my ode to watches, I find old ones and make some new adornment for you. Again and again, I return to a bench to create something new and somehow it helps me recover from all else.
