St. Angela asked her daughters to fast and pray from Ascension to Pentecost for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Depending on when our local diocese celebrates the Ascension of the Lord, our members will begin this period of fasting and prayer either today or Sunday 🙏

some notes on sufism
Tumblr media
The other day I went to the Harvard Divinity School Muslims iftar (the meal that breaks the fast during Ramadan), which was followed by a concert of Turkish music that is traditionally performed in Sufi lodges in Istambul. Before the music began, the professor I’ve been auditing Islamic literature classes with read some verses from Rumi’s Masnavi and offered a meditation on fasting through an interpretation of the lines: “If you have closed this mouth, another mouth is opened, which becomes an eater of the morsels of mysteries.” That is the nature of mystical knowledge—gnosis (or maʿrifa) is not understood intellectually, but tasted (dhawq). The closing of the bodily mouth is an opening of the spiritual mouth. He asked us to listen to the music with the inner heart.
I went with my friend S, who has been nudging me toward conversion. I’ve been allergic to religion most of my life because I’m not really much of a joiner. I distinctly remember being in (Catholic) Sunday School as a child and thinking to myself: This sounds fake to me. As in, made-up, irrational. The people who treated the fanciful stories like fact seemed like crackpots to me, even to my child-mind. I don’t think I ever believed in Santa either—I guess my disposition was innately skeptical; perhaps that contributed to my identification with anarchism from when I was 13 or 14. Yet at the same time, my feeling for the invisible, for the world of the dead, was always quite strong, even when it was unstitched from a belief system. As a kid I would wander the house alone at night, thinking I could hear my dead parakeet chirping from a shoebox in the garage.
I hated Sunday School. While I was always good at school-school (at least when I was a child, before I became an incorrigible truant), I was terrible at Sunday School. Because it seemed like hocus-pocus to me, none of it stuck. My classmates had internalized all the stories I thought were outlandish. During mass I would think exclusively about donuts, the ones we would buy from the ladies who would sell them as a fundraiser. I’ve thought about returning to Catholicism, but sadly, after the post-1970s political realignment in the US, all the leftist Catholics (the Marxists who loathed the Vietnam War and exposed the FBI’s COINTELPRO) are gone. As much as I love reading Catholic mystics (St Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, Angela of Foligno, Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, Marguerite Porete, and others), Christian mysticism is more individualist than Islamic mysticism—asceticism and separation from the group is the way to commune with God, while Islamic mysticism is rooted in communal practices like sama (singing, dancing, reciting poetry, playing/listening to music) and dhikr (communal prayer for the remembrance of God). While Christian mysticism bears the imprint of the Neoplatonist trajectory of ascent, for Sufism, the trajectory is shaped like a paisley. After fana (annihilation of the ego/union with God/dying before you die), there is baqaa or subsistence, a return of sorts.
I also much prefer the Islamic orientation to the created world than the Christian one, for in Islam, everything in creation can be understood as the breath or speech of God. The Hadith on which Sufi cosmology is based reads, “I was a hidden Treasure and Loved to be known, so I created the world that I might be known.” All of creation is a mirror to reflect God (this is why you must polish the rust from your heart, for the human heart can manifest all the names and qualities of God). In the Islamic mystical tradition there is an affirmation of the created world even though God and creation are not the same (as is the case in Pantheism). Everything has ontology. Nothing has ontology. The Sufi metaphysicians ask us to see with two eyes. The drop is not the ocean at the same time it cannot be separated from the ocean.
7 years ago I read Reza Aslan’s God: A Human History. After sampling the platter of world religions I joked to myself, Hmmm, if I had to pick the one I vibe with most, I guess it would be Sufism (Islamic mysticism). I didn’t know anything about Sufism other than the Rumi and Hafez poetry I read as a teenager, but the way Aslan described Ibn ‘Arabi’s concept of 'wahadat al-wujud' (or Unity of Being) reminded me of Spinozism. I guess what I’m trying to say is...I just think Sufi metaphysics is...right. Or, it speaks to how I tend to think about reality. It’s not something I can prove (that I don’t exist, while at the same time I am part of the ALL that is God), but it makes the most sense to me.
In the Sufi literature class, S jokes to me: “You’re the only non-Muslim in this class.” The same was probably true at the iftar + concert. S points to someone from the class: “The Maoist is a recent convert. This is their first time fasting for Ramadan.” “Is [our professor] fasting?” “Of course. I saw him at the iftar last night and talked to him about translation. I told him it’s ghastly to try to fit Persian verse into an English rhyme scheme. He agreed with me.” (We are clearly partisans of blank verse translations… yet so much of what’s out there has been poorly translated or not translated at all.)
Much of the lyrics sung with the gorgeous music were verses written by the great Turkish-language Sufi poet and mystic Yunus Emre ("the Dante of Turkey," I whispered to S). S was ecstatic listening to the haunting ney (a kind of flute). We just so happened to be sitting in the same row as the professor. I tapped S and whispered that it looked like he was really enjoying the music. He was smiling with his eyes closed and swaying his head from side to side. He looked like he was having...a profound experience. This prof usually has what I guess you’d call ‘resting bitch face’ (which I always found funny because it runs counter to his sweet and gentle personality). But not at the concert. Pure bliss was painted on his face. It was then that it dawned on me that Sufism, for him, was probably something more than a scholarly interest. I thought about what it must have been like to discover something so beautiful and profound, and to know, in that moment, that your life will be changed forever—you might go off to Iran and devote your entire life to studying medieval texts.
Of course this Ramadan I am thinking continuously about the genocide in Gaza, how an entire population is being starved to death by the sadistic leaders of Israel, how terrible it must be to be bombed and shot at during the holy month, or to break your fast with boiled grass and animal feed. I feel truly ashamed to come from a country that is complicit in this violence. I hope everyone continues to apply pressure to end this war—it feels hopeless now, but it is making a difference.

SAINT OF THE DAY (January 27)
Tumblr media
Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline Sisters, was born in the small Italian town of Desenzano on the shore of Lake Garda on 21 March 1474.
As a young girl, Angela lost in succession to her sister and parents. She went to live with a wealthy uncle in the town of Salo where, without benefit of formal schooling, Angela grew in poise, wisdom, and grace.
The age in which Angela lived and worked was a time that saw great suffering on the part of the poor in society.
Injustices were carried on in the name of the government and the Church, which left many people, both spiritually and materially, powerless and hungry.
The corruption of moral values left families split and hurting. Wars among nations and the Italian city-states left towns in ruins.
In 1516, Angela came to live in the town of Brescia, Italy.
Here, she became a friend of the wealthy nobles of the day and a servant of the poor and suffering.
Angela spent her days in prayer and fasting and service.
Her reputation spread and her advice was sought by both young and old, rich and poor, religious and secular, male and female.
But still, Angela had not yet brought her vision to fruition.
After visiting the Holy Land, where she reportedly lost her sight, Angela returned to Brescia, which had become a haven for refugees from the many wars then wracking Italy.
There, she gathered around her a group of women who looked toward Angela as an inspirational leader and as a model of apostolic charity.
It was these women, many of them daughters of the wealthy, some orphans themselves, who formed the nucleus of Angela's Company of St. Ursula.
Angela named her company after St. Ursula because she regarded her as a model of consecrated virginity.
Angela and her original company worked out details of the rule of prayer, promises, and practices by which they were to live.
The Ursulines opened orphanages and schools.
In 1535, the Institute of St. Ursula was formally recognized by the Pope and Angela was accorded the title of foundress.
During the five remaining years of her life, Angela devoted herself to composing a number of Counsels by which her daughters could happily live.
She encouraged them to "live in harmony, united together in one heart and one will. Be bound to one another by the bond of charity, treating each other with respect, helping one another, bearing with one another in Christ Jesus.
If you really try to live like this, there is no doubt that the Lord our God will be in your midst."
In 1580, Charles Borromeo, Bishop of Milan, inspired by the work of the Ursulines in Brescia, encouraged the foundation of Ursuline houses in all the dioceses of Northern Italy.
Charles also encouraged the Ursulines to live together in community rather than in their own homes.
He also exhorted them to publicly profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
These actions formalized Angela's original "company" into a religious order of women.
Angela Merici died on 27 January 1540
She was beatified by Pope Clement XIII on 30 April 1768. She was canonized by Pope Pius VII on 24 May 1807.

Today is the Great Blink, that time when the Watcher rests Its Eye for a moment, and the year turns to the next. We sat all of the kids down to write out their resolutions for the next year in the prayer journals, and made sure they were appropriate goals. Penny wants to do well in school, while the other three kids want to progress in their hobbies!
Tumblr media
In the afternoon we had some time for fellowshipping! Adam invited Quentin over, and Iris has hit it off with one of Isla’s friends, a girl named Erin. Her family belongs to the Church of St Cornelius and has some different modesty standards than we do, but they’re still righteous people, and of course it isn’t my  place to question Erin’s father in his decisions for his family.
Tumblr media
When we asked who Isla wanted to have over, she said she wanted to speak to Angela! Isla is strongly convicted to follow the Irisite tradition and wanted to talk to her about how to become a Watcherful woman like her. Isn’t she so righteous! Johnathan and I are so proud of her.

ros. oh my god ros. i've been on a frank mccourt kick lately and i need to talk to someone about it...my mom recommended angela's ashes to me a couple summers back and i'm more than halfway through 'tis....they never warn you about going crazy over authors cause there are so many instances where he'll kind of muse a little and it drives you crazy the way he writes it like this one bit in particular from angela’s ashes that made me want to pull my hair out the entire time about how even after being frustrated at st francis for not listening his prayers, he still loves him because that was the name given to him.
i also finished j.d. salinger's nine stories a while back and not to be that guy but. i would've been the most annoying blogger if blogs were a thing back then...anyway, what have you been reading?? i shouldn't be asking for recommendations cause i have sooo many more books to catch up on but it's fun hearing what others are reading
hii hi hi pip!!!! ohhhhh man ive been meaning 2 read angela's ashes for ages.............. that sounds. so fucking good oh my god. eventually im sure i will also go crazy stupid over it also. god. + jd salinger!!! man. u r reading good books lately i also should read more salinger.
ive beennnnn. reading a lot of genre fiction lately ksfksdkfkd! halfway through the archive undying by emma mieko candon, which is a lush, violent, sticky mech sf that's having tons of fun playing with selfhood & beingness & worship & language... very good read.
but!!!! other than that i'm rereading moby dick my favorite book the horror novel of all time :)) what are the comprehensible terrors of man compared withe interlinked terrors and wonders of god! etc etc. + also some joseph conrad on the side... couple months ago i started black sails which put my brain in a blender (i think u would like black sails dude... even if it's not like ur usual genre i genuinely think it's just such a meticulously constructed piece of storytelling u would appreciate it.) so i've been doing a bunch of reading re: metafiction in nautical fiction in general. so of course conrad!! + ALSO today in particular some of john donne's poetry... i adore him immensely his work is so like. incandescently emotional even 500 years later it's... really compelling 2 me hhkdkfgf. anyway. hope u r doing well n having a good weekend!!! <333

throwing in votes for st angela merici and the fatima children!! also i don’t think st ursula made it into the folk/legendary bracket but i am praying for her none the less
Votes added for St Angela Merici, St Jacinta Marto, St Francisco Marto, and Bl. Lucia!!
As for St Ursula, I'm pretty sure you'll need the prayers more than she does. If she's a saint she's doing a-okay, and the rest of us . . . I think all of us need all the prayers we can get.

St Tegla’s Day
Tumblr media
Source: Maria Angela Grow on medium.com
Today is St Tegla’s Day. Tegla was an early Christian follower of St Paul, from a wealthy Roman family who gave up a comfortable life and a promised marriage in favour of eternal virginity and selfless devotion to Christ. For some reason the Roman authorities sought to make an example of the young woman. Initially she was bound to a stake to be burned alive, but a divinely inspired wind blew out the flames and confounded any further attempt to incinerate her. Tegla was then hauled off to the amphitheatre to be fed to the lions in classic persecuted Christian style, but the beasts refused to attack Tegla and instead licked her feet and behaved like domestic cats in her presence. The authorities gave up their attempt to martyr the saint and Tegla then spent many years in quiet contemplation in a cave until another bout of persecution of Christians rolled round and she was tracked down to her place of hermitage. Still her tormentors were denied the satisfaction of slaying her because at the moment of discovery, God caused Tegla to be enveloped by the rock of the cave and taken into his grace.
Despite Tegla allegedly being born in Iconium in modern Turkey, she has a curative well dedicated to her in Llandegla near Ruthin in Clywd. Sufferers of epilepsy should approach the well at sunset holding a cockerel. The bird should be pricked with a pin, the pin thrown into the well and the supplicant should then walk three times around the church after reciting the Lord’s Prayer. The following morning the sufferer should blow into the beak of the cock, thus transferring their ailment into the bird. Three circuits of the well is then required but the epilepsy will only be cured if the cockerel has died in the meantime. The overtly pagan origins of this strange ritual would no doubt have horrified the saintly Tegla.

"Do not lose heart, even if you should discover that you lack qualities necessary for the work to which you are called. He who called you will not desert you, but the moment you are in need he will stretch out his saving hand. Strive to be faithful to that which God has called you." (St Angela Merici).
"Remember the days past when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a great contest of suffering. At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and affliction; at other times you associated yourselves with those so treated. You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession.
"Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense. You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised.
"For, after just a brief moment, he who is to come shall come; he shall not delay. But my just one shall live by faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him. We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life." (Hebrews 10: 32 - 39).
Friday 27th January 2023 in the 3rd Week in Ordinary Time is the feast of St Angela Merici, (1474 - 1540), Virgin. Italian. She founded the Ursuline Order, the first women teaching order in the Church. St Angela believed that the formation and education of Christian women is society's greatest investment.
Convinced of this truth, St. Angela Merici founded the Company of St. Ursula, [Ursulines] a secular institute devoted to educating young women to be Christian wives, mothers, teachers, and catechists. The Ursulines are flourishing today in their teaching ministry.
Our key Scripture for today is from Hebrews 10: 32 - 39. Specifically, we focus on this injunction:
"Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense. You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised."
The Christian life is a warfare. A daily battle with the forces of evil. In this battle like real life battles, there are mountain-top moments and there may be plenty of valleys. How can you fight to win?
#1. Your confidence of victory comes from the word of God. Forget it and you are doomed.
#2. The soldier of Jesus Christ must be imbued with a hardened spirit of endurance. Nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved without peserverance. The enemy will be coming at you again and again. As one battle ends, he may begin another without pulse.
But your persistence will break the resistance.
#3. Remember that your brethren all over the world are fighting the same battle. (1 Peter 5: 9; 1 Corinthians 10: 23).
You will emerge from the valley stronger and renewed with deeper conviction in:
#1. The just person lives by faith. Faith in the promise of God which can never fail.
#2. A firm conviction that the gracious and mysterious will of God is the best thing for you always, everywhere and in everything.
Armed with this new knowledge, you resolve never again to neglect daily prayer, daily nourishment from the word of God. You commit yourself never to slacken in doing good to your neighbor.

"Learn from our Lord who was as a servant, obeying the Eternal Father even unto death."
-- St. Angela Merici
"Lord Jesus Christ, You were obedient to the Father until Your death, until Your death on the cross. You humbled Yourself and washed the feet of Your disciples to set an example for them. You have also called us to follow You. You have instructed us to act as You have acted. But we cannot comprehend this secret of our redemption and we cannot fulfill the commission to act as You do. Have mercy upon us when we escape from sharing Your cross. Give us the strength and the courage to obey when You call us to serve in Your vineyard." -- Sr. Cornelia Müller-Freund and Sr. Brigitte Werr, OSU
