Captain Marvel through the male gaze.

Fellas, we need to talk about Captain Marvel.

And I do mean “we.” I am one of you. Says so right on my birth certificate and I’ve never had reason to question it no matter how much feminist and trans-positive media I marinate in. I enjoy stuff even if I don’t completely relate to it in every way. I enjoy insights into the lives and priorities of people who are very different from me.

Author's note: This is quickly going to take on the sort of lecturing tone that I don't really intend to be the default tone of this blog, but even having sat on this for a few days, my primary emotion is frustration and try as I might, I feel it would be dishonest to try to scrape that frustration off the page.

There’s no point in denying it. This is Girl Power the Movie. It is very much about a woman refusing to be told to calm down, quit being so emotional, or that she should respect her limits. Spoiler alert: she doesn’t take it well.

This movie is full of tropes we love when it's a man!

When scrawny pre-supersoldier serum Steve Rogers picks himself back up to face the bullies and declares “I can do this all day” who actually wants him to stay on the ground in a fetal position, whimpering?

So why do so many men cast themselves as the villains in this movie? Why do we assume we are the ones who are jeering Carol? Telling her to slow down, stay down, calm down, stop being emotional? Why do we identify with the people who are using her as a weapon? Why do we identify with the guy who gets snippy when Carol doesn’t find his flirting amusing or the fanatics destroying entire civilizations?

Why not identify with Talos or Fury? The men who trust Carol, try to unchain her, believe in her capacity for goodness?

Good Straight Male Representation can Still be Badass.

In the intervening years since this movie was in theaters, I forgot how great of a character Talos is. He makes me proud to be a man! He’s such a great character, Fury too! As a man, there are some great audience surrogates in this movie. Some people are constantly complaining that all masculinity is “toxic” now or that there are no positive representations of men who aren’t “queer coded.” Lets just set aside for the moment how much the fandom fanatically loves Steve Rogers and Bucky and focus on this film.

Talos is a loving husband and father who took extreme risks to protect his family. He also interrupts a cycle of violence by choosing to try to appeal to Carol’s conscience. Talos uses reason but he also uses emotion too. These are both tools in his kit, neither is a liability. If you need a macho flex, he handily beats Fury in hand to hand combat and is generally an effective fighter throughout the movie. Yet when push comes to shove, Talos’ most powerful weapon is his ability to find a window into Carol’s humanity and reawaken it.

Fury saw someone disoriented and helped rather than shot first! He followed his instincts into saving the world! He also, rather critically, was open to changing his mind. The aliens he fought valiantly not all that long ago, he was able to allow himself to recognize that they weren’t monsters, they were people driven by very similar instincts and desires as human beings. If you don’t think Fury is a hard man, he had just instigated a car wreck he barely walked away from to win a fight merely a day or two before helping save the planet.

Yes, Carol is aloof and cold throughout much of the film. She’s an alien soldier constantly being told to suppress her emotions and follow orders uncritically. That last part is key! The theme isn’t that logic is bad! The theme is that rationality without morality is wrong. Suppressing empathy actually strips you of your rationality, and opens you to being gaslit into thinking that victims are enemies. Talos and Fury both use empathy to unlock Carol’s true persona and as well as their fighting skills to save the day.

Conceal, Don’t Feel

Carol was a soldier, the mantra to follow orders makes sense in that context. However there was always an ulterior motive. She is an amnesiac serving an authoritarian state as a member of a death squad! That’s why they want her to be an automaton! They don’t want her or any Kree pondering the wider implications of what they’re doing. Sound familiar?

Put the Phone Down.

Consequently, this is a single screen experience. If you are not scrutinizing Larson’s face, her body language, and small details in her tone of voice, you’re missing most of her performance! You have to pay attention to Clint Eastwood or Mads Mikkelson, they play very minutiae focused characters. Same with Captain Marvel. It's less austere than Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday, but it’s not far off!

Strangers in a Strange Land

The Skrull story is also just fantastic. They can stand in for so many displaced and diasporic people. Kurds, Uighurs, Afghans - anyone greeted with suspicion and violence. Anti-Semitism is also back on the rise. Whatever spicy takes you have about the Balfour Declaration or the occupation of the West Bank, you’d do well to remember that if you think most Americans aren’t personally responsible when a wedding gets strafed, the same applies to people of Jewish descent.

The Skrulls can be anyone literally and literarily. They’re such a great representation of any group seen as an interloper. But in the end it's about family, safety, and finding a home. Not taking anything from anyone. They don’t even want vengeance.

If it’s not about you, Don’t Make it About You!

If you are a man, a fan of superhero movies, think women are or should be equal to men - not each equal in separate spheres but equal, and you think this is a man hating movie, explain to me because I just don’t get it. Why do you think the cast, crew, writers, etc. think you are Jude Law’s Yon-Rogg instead of Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos? How can this movie hate men when the men who are the good guys are so awesome? Who doesn’t want to be a badass spy like Fury?

Did you think they were talking about you when they included a biker who gets snippy when Carol doesn’t respond to his flirting? Who do you think Marvel thinks you are in this movie and why aren’t you seeing yourself in the heroes?

Ik that Wanda’s canon height is 5’7 but what do you think it should be? Tbh I feel like she fits 5’10 more but I may just be influenced by Uncanny Avengers

This is not the sort of thing that I really have a strong opinion about.

In general, I don't think the Maximoffs are very tall. Pietro's the tallest person in the family and he's only 6', which is not, like, exceptional. The boys are 5'8, which is squarely average. I feel like it makes more sense for Wanda to be an average height as well, which I realize is completely subjective, but 5'7 makes a lot more sense to me.

#The only character I have a specific height headcanon for is Teddy and that's because I did Hulk Math™️ and Skrull Math™️ to figure out #what the range of his shapeshifting powers

people don't want to admit it but the mcu tying it's live-action characters to singular actors and either requiring schedules be flexible towards the rat's whims or bend and warp the character writing around actor's availability has been a harmful practice to all parties involved

so many stories simply were not able to be adapted properly or at all because of this, entire character arcs or characterization get tossed out the window under the mentality that the characters live and die by the actors instead of letting multiple actors do interpretations and free up schedules and increase flexibility

not doing that led to characters effectively getting removed from the plot (with actors who gladly let their characters get backgrounded bc they hardly want to be there themselves and don't defend their characters), or solo projects giving another character majority screentime to appease one actor with all the power and bc the other actor simply doesn't care abt his character (remember how much Chris gladly let IM4 happen and how little he defends his own character and lets steve be walked over?), or create actors who think hanging out with their actor friends and goofing off together with cliche and bad character writing makes great film/TV if the character hold the special superhero prop weapon at the end (multiple examples of this lol)

or most obviously when their contracts end and go unrenewed, the actor=character mentality leads to characters getting written off in most character assassinating ways instead of biting the bullet and recasting instead of nuking any semblance of character just to create and ending for the actor and not the character (ppl don't want to admit this either, but evans doesn't care at all at how endgame destroyed steve or broke all logic for the characters and for the rules, he loves the ending and does not care abt the Steve from the solo projects at all. Chris prefers the avengers crossovers version of Steve and even made CA3 a crossover and prefers the 2-dimensional Mr. America Man characterization that exists in the Avengers stuff and does not understand why fans liked the non-crossovers more where he had deeper character with struggles and conflicts and human emotions and flaws

so ofc Chris now goes on interviews and say that his ending was a "perfect shiny thing" that he doesn't want to "tarnish", he's a fan of Whedon-esque Steve from the group movies, he thinks EG is a great ending and doesn't defend Steve's character at all bc he doesn't even understand Steve himself) many such cases among marvel actors! which is why tying characters to actors is bad bc these actors don't care for the characters if we are honest so having multiple actors for different projects and replace ones that leave would have led to better stories for the characters. But alas, live-action does not like replacing actors that frequently unless it's Broadway/plays, so the character writing suffers even more than it would've done regardless under the executive's ideas

I agree completely that the actor=character mentality has damaged the writing, but even working within the parameters of when the actors are available/in contract they could've done a better job. Certainly a better job of planning, so that you don't notice, ie. the glaring absence of characters from scenes they logically 100% should be in.

And I think it was a huge mistake, from conception, to have the actors playing Bucky and Steve contracted for different numbers of movies / time lengths. Because they're supposed to be a matched set, and by deliberately unnecessarily creating a situation where one will be around longer than another, they've just set themselves up to fail from the very beginning.

But I have to completely disagree on your assessment of Cevans' views about Steve / the different versions of him.

He's complained about scenes being cut, and about being forced to say stupid OOC lines in Avengers movies (and admitted he complained about it during filming), and about just playing the guy who reacts to things rather than getting to drive the story.

He's not defending the shitty ending of Steve because he thinks it was good (LOL just look at his performance in EG! he's been talking about the Steve/Bucky connection for years! He made Lightyear after, which is like a manifesto for why Steve's ending is shit! And then the first chance he got he reunited with Mackie and Stan! *and it was supposed to be w/ Scarjo as well but that fell through*)

The reason he's not criticising EG is because he is FINALLY FREE.

Whereas, if he admitted EG was shit (which he was contractually not allowed to, anyway) then that would mean admitting there is a reason for him to come back.

And he does not want to come back.

He does not want to be back in The Rat's clutches, any more than- well, any of the actors do, I imagine. So he'll toe the company's line because he's sick of people asking if he'll ever be back as Cap.

Carol Danvers is a former United States Air Force pilot who, upon being exposed to the energy of the Tesseract via the destruction of the Light-Speed Engine, obtained cosmic powers. She gained further powers when she was made into a Kree-human hybrid via a blood transfusion from Yon-Rogg, and had all of her old memories removed, turning her into the Kree's weapon and a member of Starforce. Operating under the name of Vers she was captured by Skrulls during the Kree-Skrull War, resulting in her returning to Earth and beginning to recall her past, with help from Nick Fury and her best friendship Maria Rambeau. Vers subsequently discovered that Yon-Rogg and the Kree Empire had been manipulating her for years, learning from Talos that the Skrulls were merely seeking to find a new home. With this information, Danvers, rejected her Vers persona and unlocked her true powers and defeated the Kree invasion onto Earth that was being led by Ronan the Accuser, before setting off out to the far reaches of the galaxy to finish what her late mentor Mar-Vell had previously started, honouring her by becoming known as Captain Marvel.

You get hurt on a mission and Carol is there to help you get better. Even if that means you gotta bite her….

Kamala’s grin had fallen for the first time since the four of you had originally met. Monica was sat Beside you, watching as the few remaining Skrull vanished from the ship in a flash of light. Sorrowful silence replaced their prescience

You leaned against the table, desperately attempting to cover the wound on your abdomen with your hand. You wore a plain, black shirt and matching leather jacket which kindly assisted in hiding the dark blood seeping through the fabric.

“Y/n? Are you alright?”

Monica asked, her stoic face shifting into an expression of pure concern. You tried your best to smile, swallowing down the painful hiss as you got to your feet, stumbling as you took a step away. Kamala is on her feet immediately and Carol dashes to your side, fear moulding her clay face.

“Im alright, just tired. Don’t worry.”

You glanced at Kamala, who’s eyes were tearing up with guilt. She had tried to shield you as the large, rocky over hang had fallen, but she had swapped places the second she used her powers. As a result, a large piece of the boulder had dug itself into your body, while it was removed, the wound refused to close without blood. You shook your head, almost begging her not to mention it.

“She got trapped under one of the rocks that fell.”

She cries out and Carols eyes widen with shock. She had seen you disappear for a moment as she had blasted the falling boulders, but she had never thought for a second that you had been caught in the rocks, never mind been impaled by one of the shards.

“You’re coming wit me”

“Carol-“

You began to protest, but Carol began to drag you from the others into the room down below. Once there, she forced you to sit down, quickly tearing your jacket off your shoulders.

“Carol-“

“Y/n, im going to help you.”

“Carol!”

You tried again as she lifted the bottom of your shirt up, revealing the deep, seeping wound. Blood flowing down onto your dark, vibranium infused trousers. She froze, staring in horror at the wound.

“Carol, you can’t help. The wound is way too bad, I need blood. Pass me one of the bags in the fridge.”

Carol remains staring fixedly at the wound, almost as if she was contemplating her next move. She slowly raises her head, meeting your soft gaze.

“There aren’t anymore. I forgot to ask fury for more.”

“What?!”

You shout, yelping as pain shot through your body at the action. Panic bubbles inside of you. Without blood and with such an injury, your hunger would grow faster than usual. You were a danger to everyone in this ship. You needed to go. Get out. Before you hurt anyon-

“I’m going to help you.”

Carol says again, releasing the words deliberately slowly as she moves her hair away from her throat. Allowing her neck to be on full display. Your eyes flashed red at the sight, hunger boiling in the pit in your stomach and burning through your veins. You snap your jaw shut, locking it in place and lurching away from your girlfriend. She grasps your hands, holding them tightly as she speaks gently.

“Please Y/n, let me help.”

“Captain-“

You muttered, leaning a little closer to where she is crouched in front of you. She gasps lowly as your lips graze her neck, pressing light kisses against her pale skin. You feel her arms wrap around your shoulders, fingers rubbing small, encouraging circles on the back of your neck.

“Go ahead.”

She whispers into your ear, sending chills throughout your body. You sigh, sinking into the crook of her neck, running your tongue gently over the skin there, attempting to numb it a little before you hurt her.

Your fangs slip easily from your gums, trailing the flesh until they froze on your girlfriends pulse point, you pull the strap of her top down her shoulder a little, giving you a greater area to work with. She moans quietly as your fangs sink into her skin, breaking into the vein. Her blood flows into your mouth, the warmth soothes the pain of the wound, you wrap your arms around her waist, pulling her up into your lap. She lifts her head up, gasping up at the ceiling as you drink. Her hands trail down your chest to where your wound is, feeling the skin as is twists and knits itself back together. She feels you press further into her throat, your fingers curling around her hips as you attempt to control yourself.

“Y/n”

She mutters, the name barley a whisper through the blur of pain and pleasure. But you hear her, slowly retracting your fangs from her throat before trailing your tongue over the wound. Gathering the blood that had attempted to slip away from you.

“Thank you”

You mutter, barley away from her throat before she grasps your shirt by the scruff and pulls you into a kiss. Her tongue tailing your lips, tasting her own blood in your mouth. She feels the vibration of your moan ripple up your throat as she breaks away, biting down on your neck in return. You close your eyes, feeling her lips suck against your cool skin. Trying hard not to moan in case the others hear-

“Carol, we’re not alone on the ship, remember?”

You manage to force out, missing her touch as she gets up quickly. A sly grin painting her face.

“We’ll finish this when we’re alone then.”

she chuckles, giving a final, desperate kiss to your lips before leaving. Wiping the blood from her neck and leaving you a flustered mess behind her.

How would Thor/Homelander/Soldier boy react to them accidently hurting (emotionally or physically) their bf?

Thor:

Probably the only one here with some emotional intelligence, and yeah, he used to be arrogant, but he's a sweetheart, an absolute angel. Thor is most likely very in tune with how you convey emotions, I mean he worships the ground you walk on.

If he hurts you physically, and you end up scared of him, I can see two things that could happen, he either distances himself from you for a while to work through the mental breakdown that probably hits him. Second option is he hovers; I mean, the man can summon thunder and control lightning - regardless of what species you are (Kree, Human, Asgardian, Elf, Skrull, etc.) - he's gonna be concerned cause I mean, he could maybe indirectly stop your heart, or crush your internal organs, or just hurt you brutally and painfully in any other way.

If he hurts you emotionally, he's groveling; he's doing everything in his power to show how sorry he is and how much he loves you. He'll probably ask you what you want, if you want distance he'll give it to you, he'll stay away until you call back and hopes it doesn't lead to a breakup.

Homelander:

Like father like son, I guess. Sort of. I think with all the time he's spent around people and getting high of approval, he at least has some sort of knowledge on emotions, but not like in a healthy normal way, more in a 'I've been around people crying and whining before I know enough to be able to speedrun the crying stage and get to the forgiveness part' if that makes sense.

Also, I feel like it would also depend on how your relationship is; if you and Homelander have a genuine thing going on, then he'd probably put in effort cause he doesn't want to lose the only source of actual genuine affection in his life. So you'd probably get an apology, some gifts, anything Homelander thinks will get him back in your good graces. And then cuddles.

If your relationship is a fling of some kind or fake relationship to hype the masses with no romantic feelings of any kind involved on his end, then you ain't getting no apology honey 💀, because I mean, he likes to embarrass people who he perceives have wronged him, so even if he's the one at fault for hurting you physically or mentally, it'll somehow become your fault, so he'll probably bring the fight out into the public, use Vought to paint you as the one in the wrong, if you don't want that to happen then you should apologize, you're the one who's wrong here.

Soldier Boy:

I love Ben, I do, but I know this man has like the emotional bandwidth of a rock like he's probably still trying to process being attracted to not only women while also trying to unpack his goofy ass douchebaggery.

I don't think Ben would notice at first if he hurt you emotionally, or if he does, he'd probably think you'd get over it and then be shocked if/when you don't. He'd feel bad and experience the wonderful world of guilt.

If he hurt you physically, he'd notice a lot quicker, and probably feel worse, I feel like he's the kind of guy who takes physical injuries/pain more seriously than emotional and mental.

What is this?

It’s a SamBucky event.

Is there any pressure?

No pressure at all.

Can I fill more than one prompt with one piece of art/one fic?

Yes! You can fill one prompt with one piece of art or fic. You can try to fill all five prompts that week at once with one piece of art or fic. You can do any number in between.

Are there any prizes for making anything for this event?

Just the satisfaction that you made something cool.

Is it just SamBucky?

Yes please, just SamBucky. There can be side ships, but the main ship should be SamBucky.

How long will this event run?

It will run from March 18th and run until April 28th.

I heard there are badges I can use for each fill?

RULES AND GUIDELINES

What are the guidelines for the bingo?

I will be borrowing some of this from the MYSU Valentine’s Day Bingo 2022 Guidelines, since they were fantastic.

For Everyone:

1. Remember to @sambuckylibrary in the post as well as #tfatwsanniversary2024.

2. Please also tag the prompt you’re filling (for instance, if the square is “Redwing”, use “#redwing” as one of your tags when posting about it on Tumblr).

3. If you’re uploading to AO3, please:

a ) Say somewhere which prompt you’re filling.

b ) Add it to TFATWS Anniversary Event 2024 (TFATWS_Anniversary_Event_2024).

For Artists:

1. Create at least one piece of new art that can’t have been posted anywhere else before this.

2. All visual art forms are welcome:

a ) Gifsets, at least 3 gifs.

b ) Aesthetic boards or moodboards, at least 4 images each.

c ) Drawing/painting, that is not a sketch.

d) Fan video.

e) Graphics edit.

For Authors:

1. At least 500 words.

2. Posted on Tumblr or AO3.

3. Can be part of a series, but should work as a standalone.

For Podficcers:

1. The podfic should at least be 5 minutes long.

2. It should be posted on either Tumblr or AO3.

3. The podfic can be of a fic made for the event, a fic not made for the event while still adhering to the prompt, or a notfic.

For Fic Rec Lists:

1. You must have at least five fics or podfics on the rec list.

2. Make sure to give brief descriptions of the fics or podfics as well as their rating and wordcount.

For Commenters:

1. Any amount of comment counts, from a heart emoji (“❤️”) to an essay.

2. We would rather this be about what makes you happy and joyful about reading than any scathing critiques.

Things to be mindful of when creating:

For Sam

Avoid framing Sam only as a caretaker or emotional support for Bucky. Be mindful of Sam acting angry or aggressive in an out-of-character way and falling into the angry/sassy Black man trope (check out the MCU source material to help with character traits).

Avoid decentering Sam as a main character and refrain from focusing entirely on Bucky.

In art: avoid whitewashing Sam’s skin and research drawing Black characters.

General disclaimer: Race affects every aspect of his life, including interacting with police/government and the white structures of the world when it comes to performing his duties as Cap and simply being a Black man that lives in the U.S.

For Bucky

Avoid phrasing “flesh/normal/human hand” to refer to the contrast between his prosthetic arm and his right arm. The phrasing is ableist. You can simply refer to his prosthesis when relevant, otherwise use “right/left arm/hand”.

Specific Tags:
