Sofia, Bulgaria. I am lucky enough to have friends that share this Nomad travelling and the desire for wanderlust. With that said I took the opportunity to visit long-time friends that were living in Sofia at the time. Beautiful colours in the Autumn, I think I was in awe especially because of how many hours of daylight and clean sky Sofia has in this season of the year. The food is amazing too rich, full of flavour and huge portions like I like xD. Worth visiting!!!

Americans suffer from collective post-pandemic trauma: what it is about

Nearly four years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the American population is still experiencing “collective trauma,” a new survey suggests. The Washington, DC-based American Psychological Association (APA) released results from Stress in America 2023, its national survey that surveyed more than 3,185 American adults about their physical and mental well-being.

Adults ages 35 to 44 reported the largest increase in chronic diseases since the pandemic, rising from 48% in 2019 to 58% in 2023, according to an APA news release.

That age group also saw the largest increase in mental health illnesses, led by anxiety and depression, rising from 31% in 2019 to 45% in 2023. Still, adults ages 18 to 34 still had the highest rate. high of mental illnesses, 50% in 2023. Read more

Post-pandemic work stead: Hectic or Hockey?

The COVID-19 pandemic has indiscriminately reformulated every county, development, and field on various levels and in unpredictable ways to humankind from our daily lifestyle to medicine, technology, economy, culture, agriculture, production industry, etc. Needless to say, our work and career progression are also going through enormous and monumental shifts with many new trends and possibilities where we are introduced to “Work from Home” and “Hybrid Work Models”. In the past, we were used to a more traditional workplace structure that took place in physical places under a top-down communication model, and all of a sudden we have to transfer to these unprepared practices not only for the job but also mentally. 

The Employee Value Proposition (EVP) has had to expand according to these drifts and employees’ expectations. This might be a provocation for specific organizations to follow their traditional systems but it is an exciting opening for a fresh, employee-friendly work-stead. These current changes can be looked at under three categories: Social and cultural level, Economic level, and Psychological level. 

Hybrid work became the mainstream of the post-pandemic world with a human-eccentric model by utilizing employee-driven flexibility, culture connectedness, and human leadership. Simply put, a hybrid worker or hybrid employee is a person who works from home part-time (or another non-employer location) and works at an employer location part of the time. Undoubtedly, our future is largely dependent on this work model when there is a risk of losing 39 % of the workforce if an organization were to go back to a full on-site arrangement. It made us re-explore how we work and how we choose a career. Shorter work weeks, changing employer-employee relationships, increasing data collection and virtual health offerings are some of the benefits embedded in the new work culture and on a social measure. 

On an economical level, the turnover has significantly expanded because of the lower emotional cost, flexible job policies, wage growth, changing values, e-commerce, and more. It also helped to build an internal labor market to attract employees and move to jobs without exiting the company as 52% of workers reported flexible work will affect the decision to stay at their organization. In most countries, the online job volume has turned down the unemployment rate and allows people to self-venture.

Psychological safety, the belief that one can speak up without the danger of punishment or humiliation, has been an effective driver of a healthy workplace and career dynamics in the post-pandemic world. A new study demonstrates that hybrid workers report higher levels of psychological safety, direct supervisor support, and autonomy. This benefit also enhances and provides space for people to engage in jobs and select careers in consonance with their personalities. For example, extroverts tend to thrive in social situations with strong communication skills, whereas introverts can be comfortable in their preferred environments to bring the best out of them. Here, well-being functions as the encouragement indicator to retain coherent traders and to avoid survival mode in offices. In order, these were the workplace perks those surveyed found most important for the workers’ well-being:

Employee discounts (50%)

Flexible working hours (40%)

Ability to work remotely (37%)

Time off for mental health (35%)

Unfortunately, we also have the flip side of the coin to understand the meaning of this work-stead progression. Lack of job security, the rise of “Anti-work culture”, discomfort and ambiguity that comes with the workstation changes, deficiency of critical talent, the great resignations, worldwide labor shortages, inflation, and deflation, worsening DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) outcomes, rising Gen Z’s engrossment in wanting an in-person work experience, declining outputs can be considered as the pitfalls of these new work models. 

Even though COVID-19 has brought numerous opportunities for careers and occasions to improvise the needed skills such as agility, time management, cross-cultural knowledge, etc., the durable-goods manufacturing industries and manual jobs are facing extreme downfalls. When it comes to determining a career, these new hybrid and work-from-home models have been drying out certain fabrications and at the same time enabling excessive supply for other ones since work gaps are explainable and challenging human capital through machinery and AIs to balance the demand. 

The planet is already experiencing disruption in the workspace, maybe in the form of furlough as a change in work responsibilities or a virtual working environment as we’re forced to rethink our methods and careers to capitalize on that force. By examining these factors, we can pinpoint that post-pandemic progression in work and career reflects duality in its productivity. On one hand, we could say that these changes will create new opportunities and pathways for fresh talents in the sense of looking at the upper hand. But on the other hand, it is still an ongoing process to articulate the actuality of the situation in this rapidly swapping world which is proven to be hectic and hockey.

Strangers

“I know all the pubs round here,” he said squinting at me, still slightly sleepy.

We had spotted each other a few times walking our respective dogs on early park mornings, nodding recognition though distanced strangers. But on this particular Spring morning, the gears had shifted. On 12 April 2021, Covid restrictions had been eased, and outdoor hospitality was reopening after being shuttered for over a year.

“You can take my number so we can go for a drink sometime.”

“What are you doing later?” he smiled, and by lunchtime, we were ordering our first bottle of wine at our local, their doors flung open for our arrival and long-deprived custom.

That sunny afternoon we binged each other’s company force-feeding uncanny similarities in between gulping bursts of stylized laughter. Neither of us was in the mind to admit that the only thing we really had in common at this early stage was that we were both very much out of practice. So we ordered yet another bottle of wine for our cause, one to help coordinate a joint sense of unflinching and unshackled abandon.

“How did you decide what to get?” he asked after doing an audit of our tattoos. I’d been accumulating my various inky scratches steadily and haphazardly for over twenty years, while he admitted he had only just started collecting his body art recently in a surge after his divorce.  

“Don’t overthink it” I advised, “in the grand scheme of things, everything’s temporary, even a pandemic.”

“Let’s go get tattoos right now!” he said pouncing on the prospect, “let’s do it!”  his curly hair coiling with tightening urgency, trying to contort insatiability into spontaneity.

A few weeks later, I was sitting on the floor leaning against his legs. Surrounded by his friends on various couches, he was sitting comfortably with his hand on my shoulder. It was late, we’d all had a lot to drink but having so much fun, finally.

“... no, you tell them the story, you tell it so much better than I do,”  he said with a showman’s lilt

“Yeah, but you really love telling it” I replied with double-act timing, smiling up at him fondly, boosted by his wanting to share our fairytale of functioning hedonism so publicly. It gave it testimony.

Opening with our tattoo-on-the-first-date beginnings, I listened as he took his audience through our intoxicating tale like a pied piper, recounting our sweet-hearting days with playful numbering.

Pulling me close, with the listeners still invested, he said in a loud whisper “It’s because we’re friends, that’s why we work,” And for those very few freedom-filled weeks, before I decided to cut back on my drinking, and before he decided to just stop calling, I believed him.

I agree. It is strange, and perhaps the Spring of 2021 was the strangest of them all.

If you have been following me for long enough you know how much this little person changed my life. . At first i totally fought the change with all my being, literally falling into initially a heavy Post-partum Psychosis then a two year long Post-partum depression. . Eventually i received professional help and after half a year of Hardcore EMDR I finally gave in and accepted my new status in Life as a Mother. . Then C**vid came. . For the first time in a decade I discovered what it felt like to have time off.. and oh my Days!! It was brilliant! . I was lucky enough to have the gods on my side and I was finally approved to buy my house and I saw it as a sign of destiny.. those who know me well know what the last push was in November 2020. And by December 22nd 2020 Adam, Isis, the dogos and the Horses were all in the South of France. . 2 years of upheaval ensued and I truly think it is because I was refusing to totally cut the cord with London and I kept on coming for work. Now is the time to fully cut the ties and let go without a safety net. . I have Faith that those who remember my existence as a Tattooer will find me and come to the magnificent South of France, otherwise, well I guess I will have all the time in the world to give to Falconry which I seriously envision to become my next career. .
