god. one thing i LOVE about amir that he has no self preservation. i was thinking abt the episode GIRLS. specifically the moment where the 2 girls at the bar say amir looks better but amir is like - “um no its obviously jake ur wrong” and jake agrees…

it got me thinking…. Thinking about how much amir is willing to take for himself vs how much hes willing to go for jake, yknow? like amir gets mad sometimes when he perceives an “insult” but its not bc hes defending himself as much as he is acting out. but amir actively DEFENDS jake when it comes to some traits he doesnt even TRY to defend in himself - his looks(girls as mentioned, and subtle comments like Swag where hes like “i only hang out with the hottest guys”)… how people address jake (like in Ice Breakers, Bitcoin, jake’s sick). there are exceptions to defending jake but to me those arent really about something like jake’s personality/looks that he cant change, and more a reaction about how he treats amir (trust fall 2) or jake acting like J-Witz for other ppl (some insecure jake eps, esp the recent ones)

And for the most part he plays along with Jake being the better one of the two. Ace and Jocelyn… hes the SIDEKICK. “You consider me dumb!” In normal conversation. Going along with being the Troll Named Rod in Tiny Wings. APOLOGIZING TO JAKE IN CORDUROY PANT. In Table Read where ALL his main characters ARE JAKE…!! Small things like that. He KNOWS and WILLINGLY ACCEPTS his role as being the guy who gets beat up and looks like shit to everyone else because who CARES about their opinions when ONLY jake’s matters??

in a weird way, he’s entirely selfless. amir doesnt do things for the benefit of himself. like yeah. he has murderous tendencies. he hurts people. but all of it is either for attention (mainly to be able to tell a story to Jake), random insane urges(<3), or a form of like??? overdoing stuff which self sabotages him????? Which he’s aware of vaguely????

its just… amir holds such little value on his own appearance, life, and wellbeing to the point where he just doesn’t consider he matters. him being hurt and betrayed is another tuesday. But he would defend jake no matter what. because jake doesnt DESERVE that. and whys that? its because amir LOVES him. because amir loves jake and that CLEARLY means he deserves everything. all his self love goes to jake. even if it hurts him in the long run or makes him look dumb. yknow. because whatever. who cares. Shigeo Saves The Cat

A Dive Into What The Cat Symbolises

During the Mogami Arc, Mogami had created a world in which Shigeo had no powers, and was hated by all the people he loved. In this cruel world, Shigeo was presented with a cat, and this cat died because he was unable to protect it.

During the car crash, Shigeo used his powers in public, to save the cat. He has, at this point, come to accept that his powers can be used for good, and that they're not just to be used in dire situations. He used them to help the others call a ufo, after all! That's pretty chill! For... you know, having super cool powers that you can do just about anything with.

Although he hasn't begun to use them for his own sake, he saw the danger coming, and was able to save the cat. [And, to a different extent, using his physical powers, saved the kid. But this isn't about the kid or the fact he used both sides of himself to save 2 different entities, haha]

Then he gets hit, and ??? takes the stage. He still rejects his powers as part of his personhood; (a conscious being made from his own repressed self) he can accept them as if they're a certain muscle in the body, or an extra limb, but only now is he able to see that this is a mental thing, not physical.

During the final arc, in large part thanks to Reigen (of course, also thanks to Hanazawa, Ritsu, and Dimple, but the point is Reigen's words are the ones to calm him down) this repressed self is accepted not as part of his body, the way the body is a case for the mind, but as part of himself. A part of his mind. Which he very much had been sealing up and repressing.

Then, in the after-part, Shigeo sees a cat, and assumes it's stuck. He acts, moving forward to climb the pole. He doesn't think anything like "it might be easier with psychic powers, but I should use the body I've been working on" or "I would rather use my physical body than my powers to save this cat" he simply moves. Not a single complicated thought goes through his mind. He acts. His powers are part of him; his body, his person, his ESP - all of it is him, and he simply did the most natural thing that came to mind. He climbed the pole using muscles he'd worked on, but not as opposed to his powers - just because it was the first response he came up with. [And as a muscle obsessed boy, it's unsurprising haha!]

But he does not save the cat.

Because the cat, regardless of him and his story, is just that. It's a cat. It's got nothing to do with him; it's neutral. It's an entity with its own path, it doesn't need him in order to survive. It's not on him to save or to protect it, not on him to do anything at all about it. It's on him just to want to act, to want to care. He's changed from a boy who was afraid to act at all, to one who acts without reservation.

And saving the cat was never his goal in the first place.

Tldr:

Mogami presented a cat that he needed to save, but that he was unable to save.

The car-crash presented a cat that needed saving, and that he was able to save.

And the finale presented a cat that, at the end of the day, has nothing to do with what he must do to live life to the fullest. He's just a teenage boy who has a girl he likes, and who goes to school like everyone else. His powers are just a part of him, nothing he has to pay the universe back for. There's no big magical destiny, no cats to save.

He can finally simply exist.

thinking about - now that wano is over - that i'm glad we didn't get a kid & killer flashback here actually. because oda brings in the flashbacks when it's relevant for the arc at hand. chopper's flashback wasn't just his backstory, it was also the backstory of why things on drum island are the way they are. we got franky's on water 7 because the events of the past tied in directly with those of the present.

and it's been done before that a character has been around for a while already before their backstory is revealed to us because 1) it simply is not relevant before a certain point and/or 2) it serves to build tension and interest. Robin joins the strawhats and as a reader you're like "okay, I wonder what she's all about?" and it keeps you intrigued but also for the jaya/skypia arc it's just not relevant yet and would add nothing of importance. Law proposes the alliance and same thing, "what's he all about?" but it's not relevant yet while we're still on punk hazard because law's backstory has nothing to directly to do with it. Nami!! Same thing. We only get her backstory in the arc that's about her.

and sometimes flashbacks include cross references. like f.ex in hancock's backstory fisher tiger is already brought up but not expanded upon because his fight for fishman rights is at that point not relevant to luffy's storyline and the arc at hand. or there's this brief vivi flashback on drum where she meets wapol as a little girl which only later on alabasta ties in with the bigger alabasta flashbacks.

but! the important part is that we always already know what the character is about. we knew what nami was like before we got the flashback. we knew what robin was about getting to know that she looked for the pornglyphs and that she tried to protect luffy and co with her self-sacrifice stunt. we knew that law was all about taking down doflamingo etc. we knew all that before we got the flashbacks because the flashbacks are more a tool of "how did we get here?"

so i'd argue that applies to Kid too. we know what he's about. he wants to be pirate king, competing with luffy. on wano specifically we knew that he wanted revenge on kaido. he's got actually very little to do with the whole plot around wano and there is only one thing that connects him to it at all. the fact that killer ate a smile fruit. and the information that killer hates his laugh paired with that we know how Kid ended up in this situation is everything we need to know at this point.

a flashback in one piece is almost always not only about the character's backstory itself but also about the history of the current setting or connects to a main villain. every flashback on wano has been about wano and how kaido came to power there. having Kid's flashback in there would have been fairly odd because, again, he's got very little to do with it. and everything's he's got to do with it were developments we saw in the present.

so the place for Kid's flashback, if we ever get one, would be when it's relevant with the setting and/or Big Bad at hand. which simply just wasn't on wano
