Certain lyrics that stand out to me in Mike’s Spotify playlist (Part 3)

Okay, so, here’s one where I think the album cover definitely was intentional when they chose to put this song on his playlist. The same with “A Real Hero”.

In “A Real Hero”s cover, it looks very similar to the scene where Mike and El hold hands while like skipping away from that field (I hope you know what I'm talking about lol)

And in this cover it’s VERY similar to the scene where Mike lets El ride on the back of his bike??? and there’s 4 people on the cover (probably representing Mike, El, Lucas and Dustin while they were looking for Will)

There’s a guy on a motorcycle and a woman is sitting on the same bike behind him with her arms around him and her face squished against his back. She’s wearing a similar outfit to Eleven in Season 1 (the pink dress with a blonde wig, the woman in this wears a pink jacket and she has blonde hair)

This leads to us thinking that maybe the song is from Mike’s point of view (because it’s his playlist duh) and about El. (some parts might still be aimed at Will though)

And guess what…it’s a break up song!! supriseeee!!

see, I’m not 100% sure about this part but I’m trying to analyse everything okay

firstly, let’s talk about labyrinth and Romeo and Juliet.

Labyrinth is a movie in which the main character is paralleled to Mike SO much that it’s scary. He even has a poster of it in his room. Go to @connect-dots7 to see more on this. In short, connecting to this particular lyric, Sarah, the main character in labyrinth and she has a big scene where she discovers herself and her sexuality and they’re not even slightly subtle about it with the sexual imagry. The exact same sexual imagery is used with Mike (and some other characters).

Romeo and Juliet is a couple that is paralleled to Mike and El in the way that they were doomed at the start. For example, they fell in love at first sight. Shakespeare used this trope as a joke because he didn’t believe in love at first sight and it’s the same with the Duffers. They also mistook lust for love. Also I’m pretty sure Romeo was sort of using Juliet to get over someone that he actually loved but correct me if I’m wrong.

All I’m saying is, I think this lyric is very important, especially with the mention of “heart”. He’s not following his heart, basically.

(I know discussion of sex is very taboo in the byler community and I don’t understand why? Obviously, sexualising them is different, but just discussing the sexual imagry isn’t bad because it IS there and the Duffers aren’t scared of it. @henrysglock explains it here in a better way than I ever could lol. It’s the double standards between heterosexual couples and homosexual couples. )

The following document was recovered from an Ascario mining compound following a raid conducted by the SAS in cooperation with Seal Team 6. It was found lying on a desk by [REDACTED] on [REDACTED] among other scattered papers. The document was sent to Site [REDACTED] in [REDACTED] on [REDACTED] for further study. The document seems to depict a door, with some sort of slogan underneath it. Surrounding the door are windows shaped similarly to shards of broken glass, depicting several different words, images, and languages (Russian, Latvian, German, and Swedish), and connected by threads, almost like red string on an evidence corkboard. There are also several flyers and missing posters floating around the door. [REDacTeD] has taken note of this discovery and has expressed great interest in the document. Research is still ongoing.

All right, time to start getting into meta, but before I do, a proper introduction! Hi guys!

Now why was I motivated to go seek out a New Zealand period drama about the breakout of WW1? Well, he’s on the poster, you can figure it out!

It’s a six episode miniseries that’s kinda scarce on the internet; at the moment it’s apparently on MagellanTV (at least according to the YouTube listing). There’s only the one season and each episode is 45 minutes, so there’s only 4.5 hours of TV here.

(I’m gonna whine a bunch about the plague of six and eight episode miniseries later lol)

I should also note that this show basically has no fandom at all, at least that I could find. All the Tumblr content for it is currently on this blog, and is less than 48 hours old. Like, it doesn’t even have any works on AO3! Imagine!!

So first off, quite obviously I’m not a New Zealander! Nor am I Māori (dang, my keyboard autocorrect actually can be helpful!). Just a dirty black ‘Murican, ok? Any historical and cultural context that the watcher is expected to know, I’m entirely ignorant about.

This is an ensemble piece, starring the Smiths, the blandest white middle class family you ever saw — I’m sorry, I just had so little investment in any of them! — and two Māori characters who fall in with them, older sister Awa and younger brother Manaaki Kokiri, played by Shavaughn Ruakere and the one and only conqueror of my heart, Alex Tarrant. Look at them!

Without giving any spoilers, this show packs EVERYTHING in there — racism/colonialism against the Māori, xenophobia against European immigrants, pro and anti war tensions, systemic misogyny, religiosity, and don’t forget the GAYS. All on top of the ‘war is hell’ stuff typical of Modern Conscientious War Media. My point is, there’s so much stuff in this show that that it can’t end naturally in six hours, as the last half of the last episode in particular comes at you so fast it’ll break your neck.

I want people to watch this show, but if you do watch it, be prepared to get to the end feeling like there needs to be more!

The ball 2 night Raven College vs Royal Sword Academy

Jada gets ready for her welcome ball and her dress is so beautiful.

She looks in her mirror spinning around and looking at her hair and making sure she looks good "I can't wait to see everyone!" "Same plus I think these Royal Sword boys will make sure your happy."

Said Grim as he gets his vest ready

Her dress and shoes were pink matching Philp. A knock came to her door she goes to the door seeing Ambrose waiting "My princess you look amazing are you ready for your party?" "Yes dad."

She said walking with him down stairs the boys were waiting for her they all smiled and gasped and blushing as the spot light shines on her "Wow.. she's beautiful." Said Philp as Neige smiled as well "I can't wait untill we dance together." Said Neige blushing.

Meanwhile Night Raven College saw lights and a poster of Jada on it and figured it out Ace took one and showed it to everyone

"You see this crap?! Their throwing her a party and trying to win her over."

"Those bastards think giving her a party and gifts and probably will give her something to bribe her with !" Said Deuce "We have to save her!"

"Guys no that's not it it's for her so let's show up for it that's the reason they didn't tell us because they didn't want us there well we are going to show." Said Vil "Their throwing my rose a party and didn't invite us? It'll be awful if we didn't attend."

Said Malleus as they got ready to get dressed for the party.

Back at Royal Sword

Jada was dancing with Elliot as the ball music was playing he smiled blushing as she looked at him "Wow you look beautiful tonight."

"It's time for a break these heels are killing me " Elliot held her hand and walked her to the chair "Here rest I'll bring you something to eat."

While she rested the gang snuck in the duel club and fight club members were guarding the entrance "Malleus use the sleeping spell." Said Lilia

Malleus stepped out of the bushes as the two boys saw him charged "Holt!"

"Sleep." He said as they fell on the floor the other got closer to the door.

"Ladies and gentlemen I present you my daughter Jada!" Said Ambrose as she finished her food and put her shoes back on "I'm ready Philip."

He took her to the dance floor "You ready?" "Yes I am." They bowed and then danced together waltzing "Your dress is so beautiful." "Thanks you look handsome tonight." The song was once upon a dream playing as they waltz as everyone watched them smiling then the crowd turned seeing Night Raven burst in "Hello everyone."

Said Crowley "Guards!" Said Philip as he stood in front of her taking out his sword "Stand behind me princess."

"Whoa whoa guts relax we're here because of the ball we didn't get an invite." Said Ace "You weren't invited."

Said Alex holding his sword "What?" Said Vil offend "Read my lips you weren't wanted." Said Philip "Not wa-?"

"Oh my what an awkward situation." Said Malleus "How dare you offend the young master Malleus?!"

Shouted sebek Jada then began to hyperventilate feeling panic take over her "Crowley you've gone too far!"

Said Ambrose "I have not you take my daughter and didn't invite me to her party?? I'm hurt." He said as Philip noticed her shaking "Jada are you alright?"

"No..no please." "You guys think doing this is good for her? Your stressing her out!" Said Philip "No we're not we're here to save her and see her."

Said Ace Jada had over lapsing arguing between different people while having flashbacks of everyone's overblots she covered her ears "Stop! Go away!" She said "Why are ruining my life I can't deal with this!" She ran away to her room her father tried to hold her "Jada."

"Jada wait!" Said Philip chasing after her he followed her until he lost her in Alice rose maze garden "Darling where are you?" Said Philip the others rushed outside looking for her. "Jada? Take a Bow, Nature Boy. You Deserve It!

Ric Flair. The Nature Boy. The man whose name is synonymous with WCW and the battle cry, "WOOOO!" would step into the squared circle, one last time. The final match went down on July 31st, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee. I'll be honest, this was a match that caught a lot of wrestling fans off guard. I thought that Ric Flair was done once Shawn Michaels landed one of the most sympathetic finishers ever seen at Wrestlemania. Then, of course was the less than glamourous run with TNA Impact Wrestling, which felt like a forced replay of the late 90's version of WCW that nobody asked for. Then, this promo poster popped up on my social media feed.

While I wasn't too enamored with the thought of seeing an old man, lace up his boots and go toe-to-toe one last time, I had second thoughts and said to myself, "Wait, this is Ric Flair we're talking about!"

One of the best grapplers in pro-wrestling & a true showman that influenced more than one generation of talent, such as Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett, Shawn Michaels, not to mention, his cultural influence on hip hop. Yes, you read that right, the kiss-stealin' wheelin'-dealin', son of a gun had the type of swag that couldn't be ignored in the hip hop community.

It is safe to say, the hip hop community co-signs Ric Flair.

Even more inspiring is his life story. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, with many sources indicating that he was a "black market" baby, he was adopted by two loving parents that later settled in Edina, Minnesota, where Ric Flair even attended college at the University of Minnesota. During his high school years, he participated in football, track and amateur style wrestling.

Ric Flair got his start by training to become a pro wrestler under the tutelage of Verne Gagne. He attended Gagne's first wrestling camp with Greg Gagne, "Jumpin'" Jim Brunzell, The Iron Sheik and Ken Patera at Gagne's barn outside Minneapolis in the winter of 1971. On December 10, 1972, he made his professional wrestling debut in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, battling George "Scrap Iron" Gadaski to a 10-minute draw.

From there, he went on to wrestle for AWA (American Wrestling Association), IWE (International Wrestling Enterprise), NWA (National Wrestling Alliance), All-Japan Pro Wrestling and of course, World Championship Wrestling (which was my first introduction to him as a kid) and of course, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). His is one of the most storied careers of all time.

I always wondered how'd he end up with the nickname, "The Nature Boy". Turns out this story goes back to 1974, when Flair left the AWA for Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic region in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). On October 4, 1975, Flair's career nearly ended when he was in a serious plane crash in Wilmington, North Carolina. Flair broke his back in three places and was told by doctors that he would never wrestle again. He was only 26 years old. However, he refused to let that stop him.

Flair conducted a rigorous physical therapy schedule and returned to the ring just three months later, in January 1976. The crash did force Flair to alter his wrestling technique. He switched from the power brawling style he was known for to becoming a grappler, which led him to adopt the "Nature Boy" gimmick he would use throughout his career. However, Flair reached elite status when he began referring to himself as "The Nature Boy" in order to incite a 1978 feud with the original "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, who put Flair over in one encounter.

Now, we come to the night of July, 31st. The last hurrah for Ric Flair. While many were anticipating the main event, The rest of the undercard was just as exciting as well. All the wrestling legends were out to show support.

It was great to see a living legend get his roses 🌹 one last time.

Ric Flair has reportedly been offered to wrestle 10 more matches for 50K a piece. He turned it down saying, "this is my last one."

Wrestling Observer newsletter reported that Ric Flair’s Last Match drew more than 6,800 fans, a gate of $448,502 & between 20-25k streaming PPV Buys. This is the second highest independent wrestling gate of all time. - Yaz (All YAZ wrestling)

For Flair, it's all about going out on his terms. He wants to retire knowing, if he wanted to, he could still do it. I can respect that.

It's about his legacy. A legacy that not only inspires, but a legacy that put all the doubters and haters to shame and silenced them. This is a legacy that truly doesn't know the meaning of the words, "Give up" or "I Quit!". This is the definition of overcoming adversity and defying the odds.

Thank you, Nature Boy for all the great memories.

Pepeha poster:

In this poster I am exploring the uses of different geometric shapes to form a letter, then I used some of those shapes to create the pattern on the left side of the poster. This pattern resembles Wairua river which is the awa I was raised by, and the two shapes in the bottom right corner resemble the mountain I was raise under which is Maungatapere mountain.

I do not like the choice of colour I have used as it was just a default colour and I think its to bright, but the blue does relate to my awa.

If I were to do this poster again I would play around with the shapes a bit more and use the effect of multiply or linear burn.

Where the shapes overlap shows the many different layers of peoples background and heritage which are all part of a pepeha and the connections that can be made between different people.

Makes You Stronger: Narrative Sequence Based on the Poem Makes You Stronger (2022) by Nina Oyama

Scene 1: The share house Establishing shot of the share house exterior. It’s a vertically cramped terrace house in Newtown that has definitely seen much better days, but rent is high and income is low. We see Nina on the porch of the property being greeted by a man. Nina walks into the house, entering the living room of a dilapidated looking share house. Sparse, random and incoherent decor attempts to make a liveable space out of an otherwise rotting building. The man attempts to laugh off the obvious structural failings and safety hazards in the house as Nina is led through the property, down a corridor to a bathroom on her left. The bathroom is a cramped space with basic amenities featuring rotting pipes and grimy tiles. Upon opening the already ajar door, Nina makes eye contact with a large, bald man on the toilet. The moment is immensely awkward. Unsure of what else to do, Nina slowly closes the door and turns down the corridor. As she continues down the corridor, a drop of water from a rotting patch of the ceiling falls. In slow-motion, we follow the drop down as it makes contact with Nina, boring a hole in the centre of her forehead.

Scene 2: The Ship of Theseus - part 1: the cabin Inside of Nina’s head, a figure (Nina) crashes through the cabin of a strange-looking cargo ship via the ceiling. Inside the cabin is a warped, cluttered space that vaguely resembles the share house but includes weirdly specific 2000s toys and memorabilia, ballet trophies, and other paraphernalia from Nina’s life. Motivational posters featured on the walls read “It’s actually self care to self hate” and “Never get too happy!”. Nina rises from the floor, looking left to right. As she turns her head, a second, smaller Nina is ripped out of her body in a semi-grotesque manner. Meet child Nina. Adult Nina, overcome by the sudden urge to impress this child Nina, begins taking her through the cabin of her ship. Showing her child self the assortment of 20+ years of hoarded goods, Nina looks to her younger self for validation. Unimpressed, child Nina picks up a random piece of junk and drops it, but Adult Nina catches it and carefully places it back on the pile of garbage with great intention. Child Nina, in Adult Nina’s mind, just does not get it.

Scene 3: The Ship of Theseus. - part 2: the ship Leading child Nina out of the cabin onto the deck of the ship, Adult Nina scoops her child self up in her hands and holds her out over the edge of the ship as if they are Simba and Rafiki. Look, little one, this is our kingdom! Nina implores. Don’t you see what I’ve accomplished? This is it! This is what 25 goddamn years of living has created! A massive fucking pile of garbage in a sea of more fucking garbage! Indeed, the sea is strewn with endless shipwrecks of similar looking boats. It is a graveyard of Nina’s mind. She’s been here many times before on many other ships. Child Nina looks deeply unmoved, a bored yet confronting stare on her face. Adult Nina, still desperately trying to prove herself, gestures to the ship. She’s adding a Guy Fieri buffet to the ship. She’s adding a big-ass waterslide to the ship. The ship begins to crack and groan as it wildly morphs, trying to keep up with Nina’s nonsensical demands. Suddenly, the ship snaps in two and both Ninas are plunged into the water. Looking out onto the wreckage as it slowly sinks into the water, Adult Nina is emotionally enraged.

Scene 4: The ocean and its depths Grabbing at her younger self, Nina begins a brawl in the water. As the two Ninas twist and fight, their appearances morph and stretch. It is no longer clear who is who anymore. All we know is that it is Nina against herself. One Nina manages to get ahold of the others’ neck. She goes to wring it, only for the second version of her to dissolve into bubbles. The bubbles float to the surface, momentarily forming the word ‘relief’ before floating away. The ‘victorious’ Nina, tired, floats down, down, down into the depths of the sea, making no attempt to save herself from drowning. The set darkens, and we enter back into the world of the share house through Nina’s eye.

Scene 5: Makes you stronger (The share house: reprise) Nina is still in the corridor of the share house. We are focussed on her forehead. Another drop of water hits her on the head, the word ‘hey’ visible inside. A second drop falls, this time with a more aggressive “HEY”, catching Nina’s attention and startling her. We zoom out to see Nina and the man showing her around standing in the corridor of the share house. The words ‘Makes you stronger’ appear on the walls as the man shrugs and walks away. Credits roll.
