Just give me the coffee, I will do the rest.
Loki is settling in. Mostly, he wants to eat and sleep. The few times I have let him out of the Borg Cube, he's been out for 10 minutes, gets overstimulated, and runs back to his Safe Place. Right now he is learning how to play with toys, and loves his scratching posts and pads. He's been through so much. I have asked that the ex get a visit from his karma.
Unpleasant Subject Ahead
Another thing that this whole thing has driven home is how important it is to get your affairs in order - even if you don't have cancer. Loki's mom was getting a divorce and fell so ill so fast that she was unable to make her own medical decisions within days of admission. Even if you are getting a divorce, even with an actual protective order, your spouse is still the legal default person to make decisions for you. They are your legal heir. If you don't have a legal spouse (marriage certificate), it's your adult children, if you have no kids then your parents make those decisions even if you're a legal adult. If you have no immediate family, then your extended family gets called in.
Power of attorney legal and medical
Will for personal property
Living trust for investments and real estate
Medical orders (supersede those of the POA) such as Do Not Resuscitate
A health care directive like this one.
It's hard to think about, but when your surviving extended family is a mess (like mine) you want these things in order. Hell, have them notarized so that a judge can look at the plaintiff and say, "What the hell is the matter with you?"
Golden Treadmill
I'm strapping myself in with another 'write to spec' contract. Yep, it's more porn. I negotiated for one every six weeks from February to November. I need to visit Amazon and stock up on barf bags and brain bleach. I did say that I won't write noncon or (yes, this is a thing) racist tropes. It's hard for me to write hardcore body horror. I might be writing horrible porn in order to pay off my medical bills that makes my pussy slam shut like an angry clam, but I have standards. That being said, the editor delivered the advance to my freelance bank account and the outline to my inbox.
Whoo boy.
In my defense, I did not know that 'monster fucking' was commercially viable.
Cat in the Kitchen
Rediscovering food has been a wonder. As promised, my rearranged innards make it trial and error, but the errors seem to be self-correcting. Gut flora does come back, but I have not been brave enough to venture into my spicy Indian, Chinese, and Mexican foods.
I've been making casseroles/hotdish because they freeze well and sometimes the fatigue renders me incapable of anything other than pushing a button.
For casseroles/hotdish you need:
Vegetables: Frozen works fine. Canned is saltier, so if you go canned use 'less salt' brands. If you are using mushrooms, frozen, fresh or dried is best. I find canned mushrooms have a very weird metallic taste.
Starch: Potatoes, rice, pasta/noodles, bread. Yes, tater tots count.
Protein: Can be vegetable protein, beans, canned tuna or salmon, or meat. Smoked salmon is delicious in casseroles and soup, so I go to my local deli on Friday to get lox ends and trimmings.
Sauce: Canned soups (cream of ____), jarred or canned pasta sauce, or packaged cooking sauces and gravies.
Topping: Cornflakes, tater tots, cheese, potato chips, stuffing, etc.
Flavor: Dried herbs, onion and celery, garlic, spices.
Slowcooker meals are great, too, and follow the same rules as casseroles/hotdish. But my favorite caserole dish is my Gran's Lancashire hotpot - lamb neck chops, potatoes, onions, and more sliced potatoes on top for a crispy lid.
Back to work.

Hullo imp
You mentioned a post about how mpreg fics push the pro-life agenda.
Well. I havent seen that post (at least I dont think I have).
But I saw a similar one, stating that in many cases in fics the accidental and unplanned pregnancy (in general, no mention of mpreg) is often written for drama that forces characters together, while the obvious (it those scenarios) solution would be not to keep the pregnancy.
And I do agree with that.
Obvsly I dont think pregnancy and kid fics are problematic. They are not, and I do enjoy them. But I do agree that in same cases "he would not fucking say that keep that baby". Sometimes it can just seem ooc. (But those are fictional scenarios about fictional characters, and also im guilty of being delusional about my favs for the sake of specific scenarios, so obvsly - that is fine.)
However. While I do enjoy pregnancy and kid fics very much I think Ive only read one (1) when the characters decided to abort and that was bc they were still at school. (also: not saying those dont exist! i just havn't stumbled upon that many of them). And I do sometimes enjoy some angst, and exploration of character's complicated feelings, so I think ppl should consider not keeping the baby as a possible solution to accidental pregnancy thrope.
In conclusion - i dont think pregnancy fics are problematic. If anything Im wondering if the topic of abortion isnt too taboo to be featured in fics.
Thank you for coming to my tedtalk
Yes, this analysis of accidental pregnancy fics is totally valid. I'm still confused about that post re: pregnancy fics push a pro-life agenda, but yeah, there are a lot of instances where the pregnancy is definitely being used as a trope to push the characters together when in reality they probably...........shouldn't stay together just for a baby 😂 But, I mean, that's kind of what you're into if you're reading/writing pregnancy fics? Like, I'm HERE for the two characters getting together b/c of the baby. That's the POINT. If I didn't want that to happen, I simply would not seek out pregnancy fics. It IS forced drama and I will inhale it every time.
I want that old man bred, and I want him bred repeatedly!
(Yes pregnancy fics and breeding fics are two different things generally, but who's to say they can't also be the same? ;) )
I actually did stumble across a post-POA fic once where Sirius accidentally knocked Remus up and they decided to abort because they were out doing something for the Order...idk, the details are hazy. But yeah, abortion doesn't come up all that often in fics! I don't know if it's because it's a taboo thing to write about, or if it's because when you're writing/reading pregnancy fics, you're there because you want that babyfic content. Soooooooooo you're not gonna include an abortion.
Anyway, yes, agree with all of this!

@alexlestar
was gonna respond on the post but i got wordy lmao, so below is the weird HOA/POA i grew up in
sooooo the town i grew up in was more of a resort community than a city (i think it was considered a village?? idk the post office still hates the name when i try to mail stuff) and when i was a kid the HOA (although i believe we called it a POA property owners assoc, cause at the time it was mostly vacant lots we didn't have neighbors for like the first 14 years lmao)
it was mostly vacation homes/retirees, the first 5 years we were there there were no kids besides my younger sister and i and a few people down the way, but now with the austin sprawl this place has grown, my father has one of the few vacant lots left, but it is next door to his house and keeps the view of the lake so he won't ever sell.
this is a lake community, it had a guard, and for a while you couldn't get in without having the sticker or being approved, it is no longer like that, but the POA paid for a ton of amenities, which at the beginning thats all it was there for, we were close enough to austin that things were still kinda artsy and stuff so no one worried too much about lawn lengths or cars in the yard.
But despite having the worst house in the whole community (and now it's even worse as my father has let it fall apart) i grew up getting to do really cool stuff because of the POA
we had a massive pool, it went to 11 feet, kids from the town over would try to jump the fence cause it was so awesome, a nice park, several boat ramps, a golf course that residents could golf for free, but had to rent the cart or pay a fee if you used your own, so we roughed it lmao, 3 tennis courts, a library (tiny and unmanned i used to do homework there so i didn't have to be at home lmao), a gym that was actually extremely high tech, a rentable conference room, and we got a discount at the floating restaurant and a discount on a boat slip (we had a sailboat which is why i know), but it was a 20 minute drive to get to the next town over, and it was small, 45 minutes to get to the closest HEB, the school was the 3 towns combined and even with that many my graduating class was like 64?
Back then it was the ideal POA/HOA like totally worth it, and if all hoas were like that i'd encourage the hell out of them. i think they got more picky but i havent lived there since 2012 and i don't really talk to my father
Here's the thing, that is not the norm...
Once i was an adult i've lived in multiple hoas, some silly rules (and these are the type where you have no amenities they exist to police you and thats it)
no cars in the driveway it was a $300 dollar fine!!
no holiday decorations with color, so no colored christmas lights, only the white ones
there was one that had a rule about windows being open
my ex husband's current neighborhood is trying to pass a no pick up truck rule, he is fighting that one
no more than 2 pets, so if you had 2 dogs and a cat you'd get fined if they found out
brown grass was fined (this was california too which is in constant drought and you are only supposed to water certain days)
no parties
you had to have the outside of your house powerwashed yearly and submit the receipt
one tried to ban children, we moved around that time so i don't know what happened, i'm assuming it did not pass
my absolute favorite was the one who had a no delivery rule, so you couldn't have amazon packages or take out delivered, i'm sure that went away in 2020 but we'd already moved

My copic crate came in. My plan was to open it for christmas because I wanted the surprise of it. Little kid me would have been happy with it. I think it was fine.
otherwise, I'm procrastinating putting my Christmas stuff away. One of my decorations already fell off the wall so might as well. This time of the year is my least favorite. Winter post christmas is so drab and depressing. My husband does turn 40 in January and I feel weird saying I'm old enough to be married to a 40 year old, but here we are. My little sister just turned 30 also and thats even stranger.
The tree in my backyard finally lost all of its leaves and I dont feel like raking it all up. I'm overdue for some laundry and dishes too.
I had to take my dog back to the vet for a follow up appointment. She finished antibiotics for a UTI right before christmas and her urine was super bloody today at the doctors. It wasn't bloody the last time. They said they'd do another urinalysis and if it comes back bad we'll do a culture...I was like "just please send the culture off now". So no abx until that comes back. On the bright side this is the nicest (as in they're friendly) vet office I've been to here. However, his place is friggen expensive for them not being able to do an onsite UA and for that I miss my old vet in Georgia. I did treat Edie with a pupcup afterwards. I then had to run to the post office and send some more stuff out to my husband overseas.
He sounded like he actually had a decent Christmas himself. He did a 3 day trip to rome with a buddy and they said it was awesome. So that was really nice and a relief.
My workplace is a bit a shitshow. I spent all week training a new girl and my other girls got their ACLS so now they can do conscious sedation so I had to train them on that too. Since I'm the only person who can train people, I'm there everyday all day and I'm..tired. Theres another new girl starting on tuesday and I guess I'll train her too. I just really want some free time to go back to the gym.
I also have to pay over $1000 for our insurances renewing and now I'm looking at tax season and wondering where I put my POA so I can even file taxes and has that POA even expired yet..?
2024 is going to be wild I think. My husband is starting the retirement process when he gets back here in another 4-5 months. We'll probably be looking at moving again at the end of the year. We're going to be stressed out figuring out what to do with ourselves. Also its the lion kings 30th anniversary so I guess I'll just continue working so I can pay for merch I dont need.
just rambling...

The brother dynamic between Harry and Teddy would be so freaking adorable, because while Teddy is the snappy hard edged one and Harry’s all “flower power”, the second someone dared to make fun of HIS little brother Harry would absolutely destroy them. Then Sirius would get a letter home saying “mister Potter cannot just hex first graders because they teased mister Lupin” and Sirius would send a howler back going “MY SON GOT TEASED??? I’LL BE THERE FIRST THING TOMORROW TO DISCUSS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE SURE THAT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN”
okay okay okay YES. Harry absolutely losing it when someone picks on teddy. and and and not to derail this entire post, but SIRIUS is one of the only characters in the series who is identified as having sibling (we have Sirius, we have The Weasleys, The Black Sisters, The Creevy Brothers, Parvati and Padma, the Delacour Sisters, Lily and Petunia...and...?) but PARTICULARLY in the marauders era only Lily and Sirius are identified to have siblings. (and not to derail this entire post, but its a big reason why i think lily and sirius would've foraged a friendship quick after getting past STUCK UP RICH BOY and MUGGLE-BORNWHOMST ARE YOU IM HAVING CULTURE SHOCK RN).
anywho. anyWHO.
I think in any universe, regardless of how harry and teddy came to be siblings (raised together, or maybe they took in harry post POA and then adopted an older kid, or was teddy a baby when Harry was seventeen...idc whatever) sirius would've made it like a whole fucking thing about brothers/siblings.
house rule, be kind to your sibling, they're the only one you have.
AND, I HC harry and teddy as being so fundamentally different, that by the time teddy hit a certain age (like maybe 12? and if harry was 15 or so?) arguments out the ass-hole. Because i think teddy would be popular! teddy was a morning person, and chatty! teddy was clean (like sirius) and took time to put together outfits in the morning! teddy had a lot of friends, and used quidditch as a social thing, and not like...an actual sport. Harry was fine with his three friends and his handsome boyfriend! couldn't be arsed with fashion, didn't care for being sociable, liked his quiet little life at #12 with his books with moony and his music mornings with sirius, and it was all disrupted when teddy came along and made songs up for the most mundane tasks (DADDYS FOLDDINGGG THE LAUNDRRRRYYYY).
But they love each other! They do! Harry loves his little brother so much and vice versa, but I think they would argue a lot later in life. and Sirius would have no patience for it whatever. because SIRIUS understands how important siblings are!! (and also, also, also, im not going to mention, how shitty it is, that there are so many estranged or far away siblings in the source text. Like, Padma and Parvati are in DIFFERENT HOUSES, are we joking? Bill and Charlie and Percy all evaporate when they're of age and graduate. Regulus and Sirius. Lily and Petunia. in this dissertation I will--)
So all this to say that you can bet your bottom dollar that Teddy and Harry always had each others backs. No matter what. They could pick on each other, but like hell was anyone else going to pick on them.
And while i am...mostly against Sirius sending howlers in general, I am 100000% for sirius showing up to school and being like "whats this about a detention?"
"Mr. Potter hexed a third year on behalf of Mr. Black-Lupin. Apparently, the other student said something unkind..."
"Okay so my kid has detention for doing the right thing? Interesting."
(and sirius would 100% be like "okay so maybe don't hex someone, but also you're not in trouble for standing up for your brother. do your silly little detention, and i'll send you something in post, yeah?)

X-Files Collector's Edition: Car Wrekt
Car Accident fic Part 2: this is a hybrid of the leftover car accident fics from a previous post and one lone singular little fic about waking kidnapped in a car (Truncated, see below.)
Note to all: I had to nuke the previous version of this post because it was incomplete– but it’s back up! Apologies for the inconvenience (that’s me, I, and myself to the royal we.)
Loose chronological order below~
Wrekt and Captured
Rose Thornhill’s Prayer for the Dying
““If we go too fast, we’ll slide off the road!“ Hodge explained.  "And we can’t help Scully if we’re both dead.”
Mulder sighed and leaned back against the seat.  How many times had he heard that before?””
S2 Scully cracks her head on a stakeout with Mulder and a third agent, who drives them as fast he can back to civilization. There is no good news, however; and Mulder can only hope she’ll pull through, resentful at everyone else’s prayers.
Lysandra’s (Ao3, LiveJournal, Xanadu) Truncated
““I open my eyes to blackness.  I see nothing at all when I blink, not even trailing stars behind my eyelids.  Complete darkness greets me, and all of a sudden I feel like I’m trapped in a coffin.
I take a deep breath, and nearly choke.  The air is slightly musty, and vaguely familiar.  I resist the urge to cough as I gulp the air.
And then I realize that I am not alone.””
Scully and Mulder are trapped in a car trunk, not knowing how they got there or even when. By the power of charm alone, Mulder keeps Scully’s panic from careening over the edge (and secures a future date.)
Mystic’s His and Hers
““For a moment he watched as she continued to cross, then he screamed when he realized the horn he’d heard was not for him, it was for her.  Time slowed as her head whipped to face the dark red Ford Explorer that tried t stop.  Her bright auburn hair flipped, almost wrapping around her head when she saw it.  Half jumping, she held her hands out as if to protect herself from the oncoming collision that to him seemed impossible, but was inevitable.
There as a loud screech and a sickening thud and all was silent as she rolled off the windshield and hood and fell limply to the black road.””
S7? Mulder is haunted by witnessing Scully being barreled into by a car. His mental beat-ups are relieved only he sees her on the mend. Maggie graciously lets him go in first, knowing how important it is for him.
@alittlemissfit‘s (Ao3) Prompt Fics - Chapter 5 (Ao3)
““You play the partner and POA card and earn yourself five minutes. She tells you his floor and door and you’re there in less than one.
He’s unconscious and bandaged and intubated and still, and it doesn’t matter that you’ve seen him like this at least eight times since being partnered with him. The better part of you is broken and bruised and knocked out right alongside him.””
Post IWTB Mulder is pinned by a tractor; and Scully’s professionalism sinks in the face of his serious injuries. Mulder hears her well-intended threats, of course; and never lets an opportunity to quip pass him by.
AUs
Vickie Moseley’s (Ao3, Gossamer) One More Drive
““Her smile got brighter when she saw her partner.   Unlike other times, this trauma, though real and terrifying, hadn’t resulted in a ‘skin of his teeth’ brush with death.  The bullet must have missed major arteries and organs because he was breathing steadily without assistance and only glucose and antibiotics dripped into the IV in his left forearm.  An oxygen monitor was clipped to his left index finger, but the computer screen over his bed showed a hearty 99 percent O2 level, which was better than she expected.   He was going to be fine.  Unemployed, but fine.””
Post Drive Mulder was actually shot; and while he is driven to the hospital and struggles with his many recent failures, Scully is an unwitting participant in a series of misadventures: passenger-ing on a motorbike back, a nurse that just doesn’t want to do her job, and the glory that is a California-tan doctor. There is a hash out about Diana, all is good, and Kersh’s day is ruined.
@suitablyaggrieved’s (Ao3)
#39 - Don’t Cry
““When he finally was able to move the bag out of the way, Mulder was left with the rebar sticking out his chest, another impaling the front hood of the car, and still another through the back window. It was a gruesome sight, the other driver was bleeding like a stuck pig and Mulder soon realized that he must have injured himself after falling.
The other driver was clearly dead. Mulder had watched him die, holding his hand, listening to him explain that he was sorry, so tired, a husband with two kids, a wife on the way out. Mulder gave him that absolution. It was the least he could do. Actually, it was all he could do because he couldn’t move that much. He couldn’t feel his legs, but he knew that he was a mangled mess.””
S7 Mulder knows he’s dying- the accident was too deadly, and Death is waiting- so he calls Scully to leave her with a last good memory. Scully, oblivious he isn’t patching up their last fight, indulges his conversation. And finds out too late.
Lives Wasted Away
““Scully, you can’t—I don’t—you have to keep warm, okay? You’re worse than I am right now,” Mulder says, though his words are stuttered and slow to come out. She hands him his coat and he puts it on.
“We’re in this together…” Scully manages to say, and so they both begin to push the car down the mountain, to see if they can get a better signal. The car moves, but it’s a negligible amount. There is simply too much snow.””
Mulder and Scully slowly freeze to death– but they’ve never been happier, with communication so free and their feelings finally acknowledged. Skinner helps pry their bodies out with the rescue team.
Vaznetti’s (Ao3)
Motion and Rest
““They’d reached the gate; tired looking passengers were sitting in small groups, belongings piled around them. Marita turned to face him. She could see the tension coiling in his shoulders and remembered, suddenly, how much he hated airports even on the best days; if they were going to get out of here, it would be up to her.
They wouldn’t try to make the arrest right here in the open, she thought: too many chances to escape, too many potential victims. They’d do it on the gangway, maybe, or even on the airplane itself. Focus, she told herself, all you need to do is get yourself and Krycek out of the terminal building. One step at a time.””
Without Marita and Krycek know Scully and the FBI will be tracking him down for whereabouts of Mulder. As tensions rise and their second-nature getaways help evade from capture, both grapple with their romantic attachment and unresolved inner foibles.
Traders in the Snow
““Marita pulled up about a minute after the driver dropped Krycek and Scully off at the parking lot. She must have been waiting somewhere she could see them go by. Unless she’d followed them all the way from the city. Whatever, it was a good thing–he felt too exposed, just standing there, holding Scully up and hoping no one would notice them.
The two of them strapped Scully into the front seat and Krycek slumped in the back for the short drive to the lot of an abandoned factory. Once they were hidden, they cuffed Scully’s hands behind her back, taped her mouth shut and locked her in the trunk.””
Scully’s drive to find Mulder– on an off the clock, AM and PM, weekdays and weekends– leads her straight into a trap Krycek and Marita designed. Both fugitives need information on her miracle pregnancy, no longer trusting anything they can’t hold in their hands… including their former trust in each other. CSM shows up and gets killed once and for all very satisfyingly.
Trixie’s (whispers of x) Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
““Thinking of all they’d been through together, all they’d survived over six years, that tiny cross had been what finally broke Fox Mulder down. He’d sobbed for nearly an hour, until his tears were gone and his breathing erratic. He’d placed her cross around his neck and curled into a ball on his couch, content to stay that way until he died; until he could join her. In a twisted way, her death was almost funny. It was no grand conspiracy, destined to drive him mad; no strike their enemies had thought capable of destroying them. It was a simple drunk driver, someone who was alive now BECAUSE they’d been drinking, while she was dead and rotting in a grave somewhere, next to her sister and her father.
It wasn’t fair. It hadn’t been then, it wasn’t now and it never would be again.””
Scully’s death– killed by a drunk driver– sends Mulder into a spiral that is only inhibited by Maggie latching onto him out of grief, Frohike thwarting his first suicide attempt, and Scully’s ghost preventing his second after Maggie’s stroke. But-- at last-- he resigns, chasing fate’s coattails with TLG off-the-grid until he is reunited with her in death.
Lastly, shoutout to my favorite “Fire Boy” fic (LuvTheBeez’s Snow) which is in my Creepy and Cozy Cabins fics collection.
Enjoy!

(a little something for Sirius and Harry Saturday that I decided was too long for @impishtubist's askbox...)
When Sirius moved in with the Potters, things were not just suddenly okay. Sirius acted out a lot. Testing boundaries, sure, but he also thought that they would eventually kick him out too, because if even his parents didn't love him enough to keep him, then why would the Potters?
Only, Euphemia and Fleamont were not Walburga and Orion. They responded to each outburst with kindness and love. They set reasonable boundaries and had reasonable expectations. Every time Sirius did something else to break those boundaries and force them to finally punish him, Euphemia would look at him and say, "I love you, but I don't love the way you are acting right now."
One night, Sirius came home, hours after abandoning James in some muggle neighborhood, drunk and high. Euphemia stayed with him until he sobered up, even though he slept through most of it.
When he woke up, she was sitting in a chair next to his bed, knitting. She saw he was awake, and proceeded to tell him that she loved him, unconditionally, and that she was worried about him. She promised to always be there for him, even when he scared her the way he did the night before.
Sirius had never had anyone worry for him before. He hadn't thought that what he was doing would scare her. He never again disappeared like that, or came back quite that out of it.
(She knit a sweater that night, which Sirius wore nearly constantly until he wore it to rags. She knit him another to replace it.)
When Harry came to live with Sirius and Remus after POA, he was overly well behaved at the beginning. Sirius and Remus had to convince him that he didn't have to wake up early to make them breakfast, he didn't have to sweep and mop and wipe down the counters and the toilets every night, and he did not have to stay out of the way so he was neither seen nor heard. It took a while, and the sacrifice of every single piece of the Black Family fine china launched at the hideous Black Family Tree tapestry, but they finally convinced Harry that it was alright to be a teenager.
With the new freedom, Harry rebelled.
It was small things, at first. Testing boundaries. When he found lines to cross, he did, and Sirius watched as Harry braced for whatever punishment he had been conditioned to expect. It never came, and every time, when Harry relaxed again, Sirius watched the confusion and awe on his face, and wondered whether Euphemia saw the same mix of emotions on his own face.
Remus didn't get it–why Harry lashed out at them. He couldn't get it; not really. His parents weren't perfect, but they loved him.
Sirius got it, though. He understood the absolute disbelief that someone could love you as you were, unconditionally. So every time Harry yelled at them, or broke something, or slammed his door so hard that the entire house groaned under it, Sirius thought of Euphemia and her kind smile and her kinder words.
I love you, but I don't love how you're acting right now.

Imagine Professor Remus J. Lupin showing up to Hogwarts the first week of September 1993, and all the professors are going on about the Chamber of Secrets. Professor Lupin assures them that the chamber does not exist because TRUST HIM they would have found it (with a wink and a smirk to the professors who knew him back then).
Professor McGonagall sits him down one evening with a cup of tea spiked with a little fire whiskey, and proceeds to absolutely blow Remus's mind about the way that little Harry Potter beat all of the Marauder's accomplishments by the end of his second year.

Wolfstar raising Harry snippet
This is from the fic that I'm writing (sloooooowly) in order to make @impishtubist cry. This is from the first night with Harry living with Sirius.
“Keep calling me old, Remus, and I’ll tell him about how you started getting grey hairs at 15.” Sirius tried to make his voice sound threatening, but he was just too content with the two of them to pull it off.
Remus rolled his eyes and waived his wand to send the dishes to the sink. “I’m a werewolf. We age prematurely due to–”
“–due to your condition, yes, I know your excuses.” Sirius finished for him.
Remus raised an eyebrow. “I was going to say due to the fact that I had to deal with you and James.”
“Oh Merlin,” Harry said as he stood up and moved to the sink. “With both of those, I’m surprised you have any brown hair left.”
Remus and Sirius both laughed, caught a bit off guard by how much the joke sounded like James. The laughter died off when Harry started filling the sink with water.
“Haz, what are you doing?” Sirius asked.
Harry didn’t even look over his shoulder. Instead, his head was under the sink, digging for something. “The dishes. Where’s the soap?”
“I don’t have any, and you don’t need to do the dishes.”
Harry turned around, brow furrowed. “You don’t have soap? How do you get the dishes clean?”
Remus raised his wand and pointed it at the sink. Immediately it filled with sudzy water, and the dishes began scrubbing themselves. “Did you forget we were wizards, Harry?”
Harry looked dumbly at the sink before moving back to the table. “I guess I didn’t think of it. I’ve always done them by hand.”
“Your mum did that too, I remember.” Sirius said. “Said she never liked the way the charm got them clean.”
“Do you remember when James cleaned them with the charm without telling her, and she made him pull them all back out of the cabinets to redo it?” Remus laughed.
“She was so mad.” Sirius leaned back laughing. “He knew she didn’t like it, but didn’t think she could actually tell the difference, and he wanted to go out to play pick-up quidditch”
“She got mad at him for how he cleaned the dishes?” Harry looked confused.
“Not like mad, mad.” Remus said. “She helped him redo them, and in the end, I think they ended up–” Remus cut off short, eyes going wide as he looked at Sirius.
Harry looked between them. “Ended up what?”
Sirius smirked. “Dancing. In the kitchen together.”
Harry smiled, leaning on his hand. “That’s sweet.” Remus snorted, but he managed to hide it behind a cough.
“They were always like that.” Sirius smiled fondly at the memory of them. “They would bicker and banter, and then suddenly they’d be so wrapped up in each other that you couldn’t tell where one stopped and the other started.”

Okay, but now I'm picturing a gossipy Voldemort keeping up to date on all the goings ons.
"He married the mudblood? Absolute waste of a pureblood. He was good looking too. Could have had any pureblood girl he wanted, probably. No, not your wife Lucius, but he's very good looking, you can't deny that."
"I can't believe they're together. Shacking up with a half-blood, half-breed. My, how the House of Black has fallen. Orion, how shameful for you."
"Molly Weasley is pregnant again? Didn't she just have twins? Are they trying to get enough kids to have a quidditch team or something? How funny would it be if the next one is a girl? Yes, Bella, I know that girls can play quidditch too, but not well."
"Did you see the robes that Dumbledore was wearing on that last raid? Magenta is not your color, Alby. Someone should really tell him."

My #1 post of 2022
I have a *thing* for Wolfstar fics when Remus thinks Sirius isn't going to stick with him because he's not good enough for Sirius, then it flips to Sirius's POV and he's tripping over his own feet because he's just so into Remus he can't think straight.

haha no need for an apology. it’s always interesting to see differing peter opinions (esp since i’m not attached to him so discourse can actually be fun) so in that vein, i hope it’s okay i pitch in?
ur definitely right that his betrayal still means something for all those reasons—the potters dying, harry becoming an orphan, sirius going to azkaban—but i’d argue that it became as personal as it did because he was a friend. after all, it was war time, people they knew were dying left, right, centre. violence was everywhere. they knew it could come for them anytime. that it came from one of their own, it had to have hit deeper no?
i guess the reason i feel like peter was One Of Them (beyond personal hcs) is 1. the potters trusting him with their safety in the middle of a war 2. peter being an animagus, knowing & protecting remus’ secret 3. the ‘died for us, as we would have done for you’ line from sirius.
i know there’s parts there that indicate exactly the opposite, the potshots sirius takes at peter’s intelligence + skill + general disposition in the shack but i’d always seen it as more hurting him where it hurts (with the benefit of hindsight) rather than always believing it. the way you’re aware of your friends’ faults but you don’t bring it up unless you wanna hurt them, if that makes sense? (i guess also the ambiguity around peter’s actions make this whole thing more tricky—why did he turn? when did he turn? what was the pipeline like?)
all of that being said, i definitely do agree with you that in that moment it was about james & lily & harry for sirius. when i said ‘the betrayal meant something’ i was talking more of in a larger sense of peter’s actions, not specifically sirius’ pov. some random guy betraying the potters is yeah, fine, whatever, wartime. but their own friend stabbing them in the back is what makes it a true tragedy (kind of like how sirius’ perceived betrayal hit harry particularly hard after the three broomsticks scene because he was his dad’s best friend & best man) but that’s just my opinion!! i’d love to hear ur thoughts :”)
first thank you so much for being ok with my post and second thank you so so much for answering! i love having conversations about this stuff more than anything and it's so rare for the conversation to be two people disagreeing but being considerate since usually this type of stuff ends up for me either just an argument or very one-sided so this is really fresh!
i love love love your last paragraph and i think that's what resonates with me best and kind of makes me see this in a different way. i always viewed the "the betrayal matters since peter was their friend" comment as a very in-plotline/character thing and didn't stop to consider it in the more metaphorical sense, which is always an important interpretation too.
and i'm not saying that to vaguely agree--i love talking about the marauders/their storyline in a metaphorical way. like i may have said before how i see james and lily as the golden age in a metaphorical sense--married, had a kid, the epitome of happiness, head boy and head girl and head of the world; but then they die and whoops there's a war and hey their parents were dead and their son is an orphan. they represent what never was; what harry longed to have but couldn't have (partly why the epilogue is so important). they're the idyllic until they aren't, and their story is riddled with flaws and holes since most importantly it fell apart.
that was off topic but your words got me thinking about the betrayal in the metaphorical/big picture sense rather than the "what were the exact feelings of the remaining marauders" sense and also like...of harry, too. firstly i very much agree--the idea of the tragedy, the betrayal as a whole of the friend who then wasn't. imo it's still about how he wasn't their friend in the first place--on the large interps, poa is when the books start to deviate from black and white and begin the theme of what-you-think-isn't-always-what-it-is (bad wording but you get the idea!) which is huge with the marauders (bully james, werewolf remus, not-murderer sirius, death eater peter) since the first impression ends up being the wrong one but they all stay consistently complex. (james goes from 100% good to bully to complicated but good. remus goes from perfect professor to werewolf to an occasional asshole that's a bit edgy--aka complicated but good. sirius goes from murderer to godfather to responsible to irresponsible to elf hater to dead...definitely complicated but good. peter goes from good and dead to alive and pathetic to evil to pathetic to evil to complicated but dead and bad. snape goes from evil to evil to evil to complicated to what the fuck.) and i believe the peter plotline follows that things-aren't-what-they-seem theme through that his goodness wasn't actually good and that his friendship wasn't actually friendship. big-picture wise.
but--in terms of harry. definitely definitely definitely. actually in terms of all of this -- the wording of "some random guy betraying the potters is yeah, fine, whatever, wartime" is what i'm thinking of right now--how the word friend is important in all of this; no matter what, it's extremely important that peter had a connection with james and with harry, and that it was his friend is definitely what hit hard. especially since sirius and remus and peter all use their connection/friendship with james to get at harry, so that they're important is important. but imo there's the parallel between harry believing peter was his dad's friend -> harry learning peter betrayed his dad (aka was definitely not a very good friend at the very least 💀) to james believing peter was his friend --> james learning peter wasn't his friend...well, not that he learned peter wasn't his friend, but that he died, sadly.
and to clarify, i 100% agree with the sentiment of peter shouldn't be "left out of the marauders" in fics (well you can do that if you want, no need to follow canon, just that it isn't canon) and that they 1) all believed he was a part of the marauders and their friend (including peter, up until the whole joining-the-death-eaters thing) and 2) included him as much as remus was included. and 10000% agree that peter being left out would make the betrayal hurt less--fully agree that a lot of it was about their closeness; i simply believe it to be a perceived closeness.
the way you’re aware of your friends’ faults but you don’t bring it up unless you wanna hurt them, if that makes sense?
irrelevant but slay lily 😍
i guess the reason i feel like peter was One Of Them (beyond personal hcs) is 1. the potters trusting him with their safety in the middle of a war 2. peter being an animagus, knowing & protecting remus’ secret 3. the ‘died for us, as we would have done for you’ line from sirius.
ok i'm gonna be a bit annoying (as if this isn't already help) and just kinda...answer those points? but first i want to clarify i'm part of the marauders-weren't-real squad (i really need to make that post don't i) so that probably results in a large disjunction here since my stance of peter not being "one of them" includes that there is no "them" in the first place but that's a somewhat separate thing
i think that's a super important point of the sort of trust given since trust is a major thing here. again with the parallels (whoops) james trusted peter just as harry trusted peter (ish) and remus (the more prominent poa parallel) and didn't trust sirius. same with harry trusting dumbledore until he didn't, and not trusting snape until he did, and the list goes on and on. and i don't want to invalidate anything and 100% agree the potters trusted peter and that's super important! but imo that shows the "fake" side rather than the truth ig? like the other potter-parallels in poa are of james and lily not trusting dumbledore (and then dying) and sirius not trusting sirius (and then them dying) and there's a lot of. Here's One Side. hahahaha that's wrong you're dead. so i do very much believe the potters believed in that sort of idyllic marauder concept, including with peter as a friend, just that it was wrong and peter was already disillusioned by then.
the animagus stuff is interesting because even then peter is portrayed as behind sirius and james, not on their level, needing help, etc. he's still separated even then, and regulated to level of opening-the-tree-trunk compared to the actual task of holding remus back. and looking at it symbolically, him being a rat even as a 15 yr old is consistent with his portrayal in swm--that he always kinda sucked (not in the terrorism way in the gross-teenager way), and always wasn't a real one of the gang in a sense. but also, yes, there is a definite bond between them and there was a secret kept between the four so you're entirely right there!
this is way too long so i won't go off here but imo all the marauders are very often hypocritical (a parallel to the things-aren't-as-they-seem theme!) and sirius is no exception and well...this line has nothing really to back it on sirius's end given he and none of the rest of them show any willingness of the sort at any time period so imo the sort of symbolism of that line is more 1) the contrast between the other marauders and peter and 2) the fumbling of what's right and what's wrong
i am so so sorry for this long af post but genuinely thank you!!

These amateurs.... You have to bully Imp by offering something in return.
I'll give you a snippet of pregnant Remus or professors moonchaser if you post some Sirius & Harry headcanons.
You know, I don't know if I like being Perceived like this 😂
FINE, SNITCH WINS. I HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY BULLIED.
-When Harry was a baby and fussy, Sirius used to take him on motorbike rides sometimes to get him to fall asleep. After Sirius is freed post-POA, he and Harry both suffer from insomnia, so he often finds himself taking Harry up in the motorbike a lot (this time in the sidecar instead of strapped to Sirius’s chest.) Harry always falls asleep before they make it back to the house.
-It takes two years of living with Sirius for Harry to finally work up the courage to ask if they can get a pet (that’s something that normal families have, right? Harry so desperately wants to have and do all the things that normal families do.) Sirius is absolutely not jealous of the dog they get. Not at all. Not even when it sleeps with Harry most nights. Harry definitely does not wake up sometimes to find both the dog and Padfoot on the bed with him, both of them cuddling him.
-When Harry finds out Sirius is dating his former DADA professor, he doesn’t like it. It’s not that he doesn’t like Professor Lupin, it’s just--well, Sirius is his. It’s the first time he’s ever had an adult in his life who was there just for him. And now someone else is going to take Sirius’s attention away? No, thank you.
-(Harry gets over that pretty quickly, though, especially after both adults are quick to assure him that he comes first for Sirius and always will.)
-I’ve said this headcanon in other posts before, but Sirius starting a baby book for teenage Harry after he gets guardianship is something that is so precious to me, okay.
Okay is that good enough for a snippet, please and thank you???????

Hello! I'm 30 / NB (femme-presenting), and I'm seeking a 20+ semi-lit RP Partner specifically for role-play over Discord! (I would make a separate server for us where we have various channels we can post in just to keep things organized!) Please only like if you're interested! I will DM you! A few things about me: A lot of the characters I write are my OCs. I'm not really looking to double (except for throwing in characters as bg characters!)! I LOVE shipping but I also love writing platonic stuff. Organic relationships!!! I am down for spicy stuff but I am also okay w/ fade to black if that isn't your jam! I love angst, hurt/comfort, action, slice of life, and various other themes! I also approach everything with the intent of canon-divergent. I write in third person and can do anywhere from one to two paragraphs to 4 or 5 (depending on the circumstance), and consider myself semi-lit. I'm also open to chat/IM RP. I DO NOT WRITE anything with emetophobia (my trigger words are vom*t and throw*ng up. Please avoid anything to do with this.) I also am not seeking anything with graphic drug abuse. Mentions of it are fine but anything more is a hard no. Last thing: Please do not ghost me. If you just aren't feeling it anymore, you tell me and we can part ways, no hard feelings. But if like two weeks pass without a word, I'll probably ping to see if everything is alright. If more time passes without anything, I'm gonna drop the RP and move on. FANDOMS: (Italicized is what I'm playing, bolded is what I'm seeking from you!) HARRY POTTER (I'M ANTI-JKR. I have a plotline starting from PoA and I fully intend on having certain deaths not happen): George Weasley x OC (MxF) (I can write: Cedric Diggory, Luna Lovegood, Fred Weasley, Draco Malfoy, as well as toss in other OCs as NPC characters. You can do the same if you wish!) APEX LEGENDS: Octane x OC (MxF)

(relative) death tw, hospital mention
my grandmother died last saturday. in all reality she probably should have passed in late april/early may (she was admitted for complications shortly after easter) but my aunt, who had poa, didn't want to let her go (despite my grandmother having no quality of life in the hospital). so, it was expected that my grandmother would pass. I was at work last saturday when i got the text from my mom.
I feel like I had done a majority of my grieving in those first 2 weeks she was in the hospital because, well, we were expecting her to pass then. I don't know. I got the text last saturday and I was kind of, not, indifferent? I guess. But I wasn't visibly upset at work. I was managing the front end, the registers, so my mind was preoccupied. I don't know.
It kinda came out of nowhere today. I haven't been super close to my grandma, but she was my grandma and we loved each other and I had seen her less these last couple of years because I moved away and I guess that's where some of my guilt is stemming from. Thinking about her house we used to go to as kids. It was an old house full of old things and everything smelled and felt old but we loved it. I don't know what they're going to do with the house and all her things now.
We're not going to see her at holidays anymore. She was always happy to see us and she loved Lauren. She never thought twice about our relationship, and always included her in holiday gift-giving. It was really nice. We had wanted to invite her to our wedding too, if that's the route we ended up going. I feel like I want to make. something small? Maybe. A picture in a frame or something. I don't know. We'll see.
Grief is silly. I'm sure I'll be somewhat fine after posting this until the next wave comes, whenever that may be, but I don't know. And I know this post is rambling and messy but is that not what loss is? anyways. if you've read this, thank you. I appreciate you. If you didn't, that's more than okay too.

every time i read a fic where sirius (or james) feels like shit for suspecting remus to be a traitor but not remus feeling the same kind of guilt & shame for thinking the same of sirius (and letting him rot in azkaban for 12 years), my dislike for him rises a notch.
this is kind of what i mean by fanon perception because i run into so many fics with this with zero warning. nothing to indicate this is where it’d be going. and it isn’t even in like a—narrative sense? like, sirius being guilty is in character (and one could argue remus being a psychopathic little shit is as well) but it feels more like the author just fully believes that sirius was wrong for his opinions but not remus? that it was fine for him to think sirius was a traitor?
ugh.

Padfoot and Prongs: peas in a pod
Within Fandom, there is often discourse around Sirius’s ‘obsession’ with James and how he was James’s sidekick.
I would like to argue that they had a mutually, deep friendship and post-Azkaban Sirius dealt with complex grief with regards to James’s death.
1.0 Sirius and James had a mutual friendship (albeit one that was quite intense).
Sirius was not James’s sidekick, but instead they were both seen as equals and brothers.
From the moment, we learn that Sirius and James were friends we are told that,
“……said Professor McGonagall. “Black and Potter. Ringleaders of their little gang.” PoA
And a few lines later:
“You’d have thought Black and Potter were brothers!” chimed in Professor Flitwick. “Inseparable!”
Both Flitwick and McGonagall, use words like ‘brothers’ and ‘ringleaders’ this suggests to outside observers that James and Sirius’s friendship was one of equals.
This idea is furthered in Snape’s Worst Memory (SWM) where readers are given a more-detailed look at their dynamic.
When James is playing with the Snitch, Sirius says:
“Put that away, will you?” said Sirius finally, as James made a fine catch and Wormtail let out a cheer. “Before Wormtail wets himself from excitement.” OoTP
In this scene, James is being obnoxious, yet he immediately stops when Sirius tells him to.
“If it bothers you,” he said, stuffing the Snitch back in his pocket. Harry had the distinct impression that Sirius was the only one for whom James would have stopped showing off.”OoTP
This willingness to listen to Sirius’s instructions indicates a sense of respect and the harshness with which Sirius delivers his instructions lacks the deference we would expect from a side-kick.
Later in the chapter, James beings bullying Snape because Sirius says he’s bored:
“This’ll liven you up, Padfoot,” said James quietly. “Look who it is...”OoTP.
This once again indicates that James is willing to cater to Sirius, although he has other reasons to want to attack Snape, he still attempts to frame it as soothing Sirius’s boredom.
Interestingly, he doesn’t listen to Lily’s instructions in the immediate way he listens to Sirius:
“LEAVE HIM ALONE!” Lily shouted. She had her own wand out now. James and Sirius eyed it warily.
“Ah, Evans, don’t make me hex you,” said James earnestly. “ OoTP
And when Lily rejects him, James turns to Sirius (not Remus or Peter) for an explanation and Sirius delivers this line:
“Reading between the lines, I’d say she thinks you’re a bit conceited, mate,” said Sirius.”
This dry, unapologetically blunt response is once again not full of the deference expected from a side-kick.
And in the Elvendork scene, we get to see how their sense of humour naturally plays off each other:
"Names?" repeated the long-haired driver. "Er – well, let's see. There's Wilberforce... Bathsheba... Elvendork..."
"And what's nice about that one is, you can use it for a boy or a girl," said the boy in glasses."
Furthermore, James takes several actions that further cement the view that their love for each other was mutual:
· He makes Sirius best-man at his wedding
· He makes Sirius Godfather to his only child when they are facing a very real threat to their lives. Therefore, naming a Godparent, is extra important as they face the real likelihood that the role won’t just be symbolic
· When in hiding, Lily writes to Sirius:
“ We were so sorry you couldn’t come, but the Order’s got to come first………….. James is getting a bit frustrated shut up here, he tries not to show it………If you could visit, it would cheer him up so much. “
The letter indicates that James misses Sirius and that Sirius’s life doesn’t revolve around James (another popular fandom take)
· He trusts Sirius’s secret-keeper plan- this essentially means that he trusted Sirius with the lives of his wife and child:
“Lily and James only made you Secret-Keeper because I suggested it,” Black hissed, so venomously that Pettigrew took a step backward. “I thought it was the perfect plan ... a bluff. ...” PoA
This quote is a perfect transition into the second part of this meta.
2.0 Sirius’s complex grief
Post-Azkaban Sirius, is often referred to as being ‘obsessed’ with James but I would argue that it’s far more complicated and nuanced.
2.1 Sirius blames himself for James’s death
In the Shrieking Shack scene, it becomes clear that Sirius blames himself for Lily and James’s death:
“Harry ... I as good as killed them,” he croaked. “I persuaded Lily and James to change to Peter at the last moment, persuaded them to use him as Secret- Keeper instead of me. ... I’m to blame, I know it. ... ……………………….I was scared. I set out for your parents’ house straight away. And when I saw their house, destroyed, and their bodies ... I realized what Peter must’ve done ... what I’d done. ...”
His voice broke. He turned away. “ PoA
In this quote, we can feel the raw grief and how deeply traumatised Sirius is by their deaths.
Complex grief is grief that involves trauma, so it can be fair to say (although one can’t diagnose a fictional character) that Sirius’s grief is complex.
2.2 Sirius during the canon timeline
Sirius’s pre-Azkaban life didn’t revolve around James. Nobody is about one-person. Yes they may have had an intense friendship, but even Lily notes that Sirius’s absence from Harry’s Birthday is because,
‘The Order’s got to come first.’
By the time Harry meets Sirius, he’s been imprisoned for most of his adult life, he’s been traumatised and been forced to relive that trauma by the dementors. Additionally, almost everyone he grew up with is dead.
He is also a fugitive on the run and unable to rebuild himself.
And this nuance has been placed under the umbrella term of an ‘obsession’ with James.
Note: he is an excellent Godfather to Harry and doesn’t see him as James 2.0
To add to this (although some of this is conjecture)
1. Half the Order died during the war, and we get no glimpse into Sirius’s relationships with any of them and how their deaths affected him
2. We don’t know the other horrors he witnessed during the war
3. We don’t know the extent of his grief for his family. Although we can hypothesise.
In conclusion, Sirius and James had a mutually respectful friendship and Sirius deals with complex grief from James’s death.
