Let Characters Be Complicated
In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, George Saunders advocates for complicated stories that "avoid being merely a one-dimensional position paper." So I tried this out myself, and one secret I learned? Complicate the hell out of your characters. #writing
This week I’m thinking about a point George Saunders made on the value of digressions in fiction. In his book on creative writing A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he wrote that stories must “self-complicate, and thus avoid being merely a one-dimensional position paper” (335). However, when writing the first draft of a story, I’ve found there are two kinds of digressions. There are the valuable…

Stamp out the Cancer of History
Corruption has become one of the major problems in the Philippines, the government is still fighting the increasing level of corruption, but the problem is, corrupt people is in the public office; to local government up to national government. As a matter of fact, those corrupt politicians also belong to an oligarch. Political dynasty stops the emerging politicians who have an exceptional vision for the country, and it continues the corruption which worsen everything. According to one professor, political dynasty is the cancer of history. The Philippine Government ranked 113th of 180 countries in 2019, this study shows that corruption only worsened. It may take time to find a solution but removing political dynasty will be the best solution to reduce corruption in the Philippines.
Dynastic culture in politics is not a surprise here, a member of a family will succeed to the position left by the other family member, it is not unusual in election when two family clans to fight over a certain position example mayoral, governorate and senatorial. It left the voters with no other choice but to vote which of the candidates that both belong to different political dynasty. Another problem is, if that political clan is corrupt and has been in different government positions for a long period of time, then the corruption perpetuates. Example of families that has been in a different government position for a long time up to present are the Aquino family, Cojuangco family, Binay family, Marcos family and Duterte family. First reason why the congress needs to consider to pass a bill that will limit the influence of powerful families in politics is that, it compounded the ubiquitouness of corruption in government and corrupt the check and balances, example is the former Vice President Binay who had been under investigation of Senate Blue Committee for alleged corruption, many will question the investigation because two daughter of former Vice President Binay were members of the congress, this question the effectiveness of the investigation. Second reason, it widens the gap between the poor from the rich, to privileged to the unprivileged. Corruption just lowers the economic growth and increases the poverty, some political clan put the money or funds of government to their own business, or in government projects that is irrelevant, pointless and useless to society and economy. Third reason, even they face criminal charges they can still have the power by having spouses and children reign on their seats, to make sure that the power will remain in their family. For the last reason, the emerging politicians who have good intentions are dissuade because of continues success of some political families despite corruption charges, it leaves the position open to those who just want more wealth and power. I believe, a change in political culture will help to lessen the corruption which hinders development in our economy and society. On the other hand, many still believe in those family of politicians who has a track record, good governance, and good name that is why the legacy of the family remains. One of the advantages of political dynasty according to the article by Professor Jensen Mañebog, it continues the implementation of institutional and government projects, if the dynasty is pro-service.
A consideration in removal of political dynasty in the system will help to improve our country, because it will also lessen the problems about corruption which rooted from the rule of few rich families. Others might think that it is not necessary if the other family of politicians have good governance and clean intention, but we need to look on different aspects. We need to evaluate what is good and what is bad for our country, because it can affect the economy and society. Some knowledge about politics doesn’t make us less human, in fact it helps us to vote wisely and to become a good citizen in our country.
P.S, this is the position paper I wrote for my EAPP subject noong first semester namin, hindi ako magaling sa ingles HAHAHAHA pero gusto ko ishare dito so don’t mind the grammars, wrong punctuation marks etc. kasi sabi ko nga di ako magaling sa english. Opinion ko lamang ito at ang ibang detalye ay kinuha ko sa Araling Panlipunan ko na libro noong grade 10 ako. If you want to share your thoughts you can comment naman and kung may makita kayong mali paki-comment na rin hehehe (I’m open to constructive criticism) :)

Should the Philippines change its constitution, and turn into a federal state?
Tumblr media
The Philippine government has long lived with a republican type of government. With the ongoing 1987 constitution, we all see what this constitution is capable of; we experience its benefits, but it also has a hole that makes Filipino citizens experience a hard life. It's been a long time since this constitution was created and used by Filipino citizens, so many people think we should change it. Some politicians, like the former presidents Rodrigo Duterte and Gloria Arroyo and the current president of the Philippines, Bong Bong Marcos, support the idea of the Philippines transforming into a federal state because they believe that it will greatly contribute to our country and is the best option to make the country develop and improve itself. But the question is, should we agree to the idea of the Philippines being a federal state?
Tumblr media
In my opinion, I agree with the Philippines transforming into a federal state because I notice that our country needs some change, and this federalism is a good example. We can't live with this constitution forever. Maybe this constitution was not that bad, but it's not that good either. On the other hand, federalism would be beneficial to the country, as the government's plans seem great. Their plan was to divide the Philippines into 11 federal states (shown in the figure above). This aims to divide the powers of the national government into 11 states. With this, the 11 states will have their own power and the right to make a decision without consulting the national government. They will also have their own power over the funds and more resources. Federalism was also an answer to some major issues in our country, like inequality. Unlike a unitary government wherein there is only one government, a city like Manila, where the Malacañang is located, benefits the most from this because the government funds are given mostly to them while the other city is neglected. That's why federalism is one of the answers that will bring equality to the country, as it can distribute the wealth of the country evenly to the states. Some of its benefits were that it can bring the government closer to the people, and states can have their own separate laws from other states that would be needed for them; for example, in the Muslim region, where they have their own beliefs different from ours, locals in states can decide on their own without the national government's approval, etc.
Tumblr media
But of course, not all Filipinos are agreed on promoting federalism. There are so many that were against it even some politicians because, for them, it will be used to extend the term limit of some leaders and will entrench political dynasties in the region. With these pros of federalism, of course, there are also some cons but all I can say was even though it has cons still federalism would be a good try for our Government. It's not perfect, like some medicine, it has side effects, but if you ask me, I would much like something new to hope for rather than being content with the things we have right now. Maybe, personally, I don't really been affected by it so nothing seems to change but for the sake of other people who suffer the most, I would like to pursue it because it might change their fate and brings hope to everyone. Yes, I am an idealist, but I want to believe in this federalism and hope that someday it will be implemented in our country.

Y'all need to be fucking nicer to men/masc queers
I was talking to an old friend/short lived boyfriend from highschool and the topic of sexualities came up. He identified as bisexual throughout highschool but told me that recently he doesn't know what he was and just preferred to remain 'unlabeled' until he figured it out. I told him to his face "thats valid man and being unlabeled doesn't make you any less queer than when you were labeled"
God you should've seen his fucking face, he looked so happy and also like he was about to goddamn cry. He told me that no one ever told him that. That he tried to join queer spaces but they said he didn't fit in cause he wasn't 'gay' enough. Told me that I was the first person to ever confidently tell him he was queer and that he didn't need to change himself to 'fit in'.
I gave my friend one of my mini pride flags I had lying around and the dopey grin he had on his face while waving that thing around for the rest of the night made me smile too. When he finally went home he thanked me for the flag and for reassuring him when he felt insecure for 'not being gay enough'.
I want y'all to know that whole time he telling me about people not accepting him for "not looking queer" made me fucking pissed. Oh, because he's not petite, feminine, and white he can't be queer? Because he doesn't look like a fashionable and conventionally pretty gay on you'd find on your TikTok homepage he can't be queer?
THIS ISN'T EVEN THE FIRST TIME I'VE HAD THIS CONVERSATION WITH A FRIEND BEFORE
In highschool I had ANOTHER friend who had this same problem but in a different font. He liked cute things, he liked flowing fabrics and skirts, he even liked being called princess! But because he was fat and not conventionally attractive he felt like he couldn't be queer. Because from what he saw, queer people don't look like him.
If you're one of those people who would gatekeep ANYONE who doesn't fit into your Pinterest board ideal version of queer from the LGBTQ+ community, you can fuck right off because anyone who would just shut of someone out of our community for something so petty and dumb and ignorant doesn't deserve the keys to the fucking door in the first place.
Start treating people who don't fit into your saturated and commercialized view of queer with more respect and kindness before I start biting off your fucking arms
