The Dead Guy Death Match Bracket Is Here!
Round 1 will be split into 4 waves of 16 24 hour polls and each wave will be posted 24 hours after the previous. The first wave will start on Tuesday the 18th of April at 3pm BST

4. How did your elementary school teachers describe you? I was told that I was a leader a lot, and was told that I was very intelligent. Ah yes, I suffered from gifted kid burn out in high school-

cursed child broadway, feb. 23, 2020
third time seeing cc in three months for one reason: my sister is, in her words, “in love with joey labrasca” (karl). she thinks he’s absolutely perfect. this past week i’ve endured her talking about how hot he is. i mean, i’ve gotten quite a bit of good lily luna material for my fics now, but at what expense? did i need to know that joey’s (very mild) acne made him look handsomer? did i need to know about how deep his eyes are? did I?
i teased her about what she’d do if he wasn’t on, and she said she’d be so upset.
we get to the theatre, i look at the cast…and james romney was karl.
my sister was shocked. the love of her life, who most likely has forgotten about her existence, wasn’t there for what looks to be our final time seeing the year 2 cast. she was devastated.
we also got to see antoinette robinson as hermione and tom patrick stephens as ron! and sarita amani nash was myrtle!! and kimberly dodson as polly!!
james!karl was great and i will bombard my sister with as much james romney content as i can in order to piss her off further :)
patrick du laney was the sorting hat and aaron bartz was the station master. we actually saw aaron walking into the theatre as we waited outside for part 2. he definitely has the draco swagger.
anyway let’s get to the good stuff!
~james snyder as harry! great as usual. i don’t think he did much differently than last time, or if he did it wasn’t very noticeable.
~diane davis as ginny – same w james. i think she held on to albus longer when they hug in godric’s hollow this time?
~jonno roberts as draco: okay this guy singlehandedly inspired me to start a fic back in december (that has…….yet to be finished………) with how his draco and bubba’s scorpius behaved and this was no exception. idk whether his mic got caught on something or if he was really bringing it all out, but when he shoves scorpius’s head against his desk in the dark world, he GROWLED the “you do NOT use her name in vain” line ???? i’ve never heard him say it like that, it’s usually more of a hiss. idk how to describe how he said it other than “growl.” almost like an animal.
then when he said “do it safely, i can’t lose you too” he’s looking directly at scorpius. it’s different from how i’m used to seeing him and closer how i picture him saying it; usually he’s looking away, like he’s afraid of showing vulnerability to scorpius. but here, with him looking directly at him, and said with so much emotion and love, even in such a dark place…oOOF
he refused to let go of scorpius when they met again in godric’s hollow. my heart…..always one arm around scorpius’s shoulders, or one hand on his chest, as scorpius clings on to him.
~kimberly!polly SMILED and giggled when she stepped in blood? “oh, potter, i’ve got blood on my shoe!” *delighted* and then as the staircase rolled away, she turned on her stomach to gaze down at scorpius, grinning flirtatiously. this is my second time seeing her as polly, but from what i remember, katherine!polly wasn’t as sadistic in the dark au as she was. i personally prefer kimberly!polly.
~sarita!myrtle!! like w kimberly!polly this is my second time seeing sarita!myrtle and i don’t really remember much about lauren!myrtle to compare, but sarita!myrtle was hilarious. she got a round of applause just for appearing. “girls….*turns around, stares directly @ albus* AND BOYS” *albus turns around, confused, as if she’s talking to someone behind him* UGHHH she’s so good and she’ll absolutely kill it as (main) polly, i can feel it.
~this was my first time seeing jack pravda as young harry! his voice is deeper than zell’s, and he was so adorably confused in the graveyard scene. “why are there so many flowers?”
~antoinette!hermione was a lot less playful than jenny!hermione. she does try for comedic effect, but she’s a bit more serious overall. she was so scary in the first timeline! when she waves her wand to dismiss the class and she’s standing all alone, she looks out with such a distant, despairing expression, then composes herself immediately.
~tom!ron was very funny! again, my issue with ron in cc comes down to how he was written. he may have been relegated to shitty comic relief (why……is one of the first things he says……a fart joke…..?), but it’s up to the actors do what they can to flesh out some semblance of a likeable character from the bs that the script gave us. and tom!ron was great!! he’s not as…dopey? dorky? as matt!ron, who’s very funny but a bit—childish? i guess? tom!ron feels more like an adult who still has a childish sense of humor, if that makes sense.
~ROMIONE. watching a new take on romione was like falling in love w romione all over again. tom/antoinette was a very loving pair. jenny/matt tease each other a lot more, but tom/antoinette are more tactile. their kiss was so sweet
~there’s hardly any love for sara farb’s delphi for some reason. i’m not sure why; her shift from delphi diggory to delphi riddle is so chilling. delphi diggory has a high pitched voice and is really goofy around albus. scorpius absolutely hates her lmao. as soon as she switches, her voice drops to a low growl and she’s downright terrifying. i’m sad to see her go!
~WILL CARLYON. is it possible to fall in love with the portrayal of a character in a handful of scenes? he’s got like five lines total but oh my god. one thing a lot of people note about nicholas!albus is the way he’s so obviously a fourteen-year-old child. will’s james sirius potter is SUCH a thirteen-year-old in the opening scene…it’s somewhat disconcerting watching this very-obviously-twenty-something-year-old man flap his arms going “WATCH OUTTT FOR THE THESTTRRAAAAAAALS” but it works? it’s believable?? he’s so close with lily luna. this is my third time seeing him and every time he pretends to pounce on her and hug her during the thestral line i fall in love?? ginny scolds him and he is sheepish, but he won’t stop making the troll face at albus. “SLITHERING SLYTHERIN STOP WITH YOUR DITHERING” *smacks albus*

~he’s sO excited watching albus get sorted. when the hat goes “SLYTHERIN” he’s absolutely shocked. he’s confused. he just stares at albus, confused, until yann (jonathan gordon, who once again gives us a delightfully dislikable yann) says some shit and james just turns to him and swats his hand at him. he genuinely looked ready to fight yann. i couldn’t tell but i think he tells him to stop?? it was hard to hear but his mouth definitely moved, i think to tell yann to cut it out.
~the scene with the students eavesdropping on mcgonagall’s meeting with the parents. oh my god i don’t think he did anything that much differently than last time but i need to talk about this because i didn’t do it justice in my last recap.
~they sit on the stairs (iirc) top to bottom craig, yann, karl, rose, james. i’m gonna ignore craig, yann, and karl since there are some serious family feels going on w rose and james
~jsp and rose begin the scene smiling, snickering as they hear that albus and scorpius fucked up. “ahaha they got into deep shit” but then when they learn that they wrote rose and hugo (??whom??) out of time and then killed harry, their faces fall. james’s eyes become vacant, far-off as he learns what happened to his brother. his breathing becomes heavier and faster until he’s a few breaths from hyperventilating. he leans his forehead against the stairwell/banister and shakes his head, mouthing/whispering “no…no…”
~nadia brown’s rose is such a little shit but she’s so good in this scene. when she learns that she didn’t exist in the new timeline, she grabs james’s shoulder and he grabs her hand. they don’t let go for the rest of the scene.
~i’m like half convinced that will got the part because of his amazingly expressive eyebrows. i think my sister calls it “back row acting?” his eyebrows can probably be seen from the back row. after the mcgonagall scene is over he sits on the stairs, raising one eyebrow at rose and hermione, then goes back to reading the scroll.
~i didn’t mean for this to become a will carlyon fan account but he deserves it. according to nicholas he’s the biggest potterhead in the cast. he’s a ravenclaw. he can sing. he’s so fucking valid and i’m so glad he’s staying for year 3. he’s got two followers on youtube and one of them is me. please guys like no one talks about him and i’ll fill this niche. same with the lovely sarita. she’s so kind and so beautiful and so talented she can sing so well and she gives everything during wand dance listen i spent the beginning of this thing making fun of my sister for liking joey so much but sarita……..

~nicholas podany as albus. so. Many. Tears. i didn’t realize this before but his whole body trembles when he cries?? i first noticed this when he and harry were in the slytherin common room. i was like “are his pajamas vibrating?? is this an optical illusion (they’re striped pajamas)???” no, his whole body was shaking with suppressed crying. once i noticed i couldn’t un-notice and this continued for the rest of the show.
~bubba weiler’s scorpius didn’t seem much different from usual? i could go on about him but….that’s what my unfinished fic is for……one day……….
~okay so this is where i elaborate on the scorbus moments that made me want to YEET myself off the roof of the theatre (if you had to make sense of my typos on discord: i am Sorry)
~the slytherin dorm scene: scorpius tickles albus to wake him up. he then makes himself comfortable on albus’s bed and won’t stop rubbing and patting his thigh.
~in addition to being austistic, bubba!scorp is bisexual (jon case would be proud) and here is PROOF: to flirt, bubba!scorpius leans against objects, sprawls his body out, plays with his hair, etc all extremely cheesy, greasy, suave moves. he blows a kiss to polly as he’s sprawled across the stairs. when he ROLLS down the stairs (looked painful…) to see rose at the end, he plays with his hair, shoots her a finger gun (further proof he’s bi), and lowers his voice. but the comparison i need to highlight is THIS: when he says rose smells like bread, (1) he leans against the suitcases, trying to look suave, and (2) his face is instant regret. he silently bends back and mouths “WHAT WHY BREAD?? WHAT??? WHY???” and now…when he delivers his “ENGORGIMPRESSED” line to albus, he (1) leans against the sink, (2) grins, lowering his voice, and when the pun doesn’t land, (3) his face immediately falls, instant regret, the literal definition of “oH MY GOD WHAT WHY DID I JUST SAY THAT” the same expression he had when rose wasn’t impressed. coincidence? i think NOT. he’s trying so hard to flirt but he has no idea how to interact w people im --
~delphi in the church: when the adults have all surrounded delphi with their magic in the center of the stage, albus, ginny, and scorpius are huddled together. scorpius is behind albus, clutching his shoulder and hand. albus breaks free for “SHE’S A MURDERER I’VE SEEN HER MURDER” (an underappreciated line imo) and scorpius just watches him, clearly wanting to help but not knowing how
~the final hug. my initial, endorphin-fueled reaction was, verbatim: “THE FUNAL HUG NSCWR SEEN IR LAST SO LLNG NEVER SAW NICJ HUG HIM BACK NOSES ALMOST TOYCHONF.” not even this is enough to convey my reaction to the final hug, but i’ll try my best to transcribe it.
scorpius: runs up the stairs, grabs albus into a hug
albus: stunned for a moment, then wraps his arms around scorpius’s shoulders and hugs him back, burying his face into the crook of scorpius’s neck. this is the first time i’ve seen him hug back, at least so fiercely. they stand there for a good 3-5 seconds, then albus says, quietly, “what’s this? i thought we didn’t hug.”
scorpius, pulling back but still close to albus: “i wasn’t sure whether we should…” *looks up at albus, literal inches from his face* “in this new version of us…” *more gazing into each other’s eyes for a few seconds*
albus: “well…you better ask rose if it’s the right thing to do…” he sounded unsure? not as playful as before?
scorpius: *stares at albus for a few seconds* “a..aaha………..yeah right!”
he turns around and runs down the stairs. albus goes “i’ll see you at dinner!” and scorpius turns around, smiles at him, and walks off, albus grinning and gazing so lovingly as he departs i’m gonna c r y
i can’t think of anything else to say about the show itself? but my sister has given me a lot of material so i’m gonna talk about what went on with her because it’s relevant to our stage door interactions.
as we ate, she described how she would rewrite cc. she has valid and absolutely invalid suggestions. she would keep the father/son issues, make scorbus canon, remove or rewrite rose, and rewrite delphi’s backstory (valid). she would remove the sorting hat and the dark timeline (not valid).
during the intermission between acts 3 and 4, we started looking through the playbill and she started gossiping/venting about how much she hates the people in her school’s theatre (valid, since they’re bullying assholes). i brought up a meme i sent her that i saw on twitter about how no high school theatre guys can sing, act, dance, and not be sexist. somehow this discussion went back to nicholas podany? she was like, “i’ve been listening to his songs and deep blue is a low-key bop.” i asked if she heard his most recent song, telling myself. she hadn’t and she immediately went to soundcloud to listen to it. her reaction was PRICELESS. she absolutely adored it. she was dancing in her seat, going “okay this is actually really good??” like ofc it is? i don’t recommend bad songs? she tried to replay it but then her data ran out and the lyric theatre wifi is shit so she got very upset. then the lights turned off and she reluctantly took out her earbuds.
there was a little girl (around 6-7ish, i’d say) in the very first row dressed as hermione for part one--complete with a doll and a broom. for part two she was wearing a hedwig costume that looked homemade! she was very adorable, and bubba waved hello to her when he came for the curtain call.
stage door:
~sarita came out first! we told her that this was our third time at the show and second time seeing her. i congratulated her on being cast as polly and she was so happy! dare i say…..loml
~tom and antoinette were so happy to have been the first cover romione we saw! tom was like “ah, you saw the best ron (himself)!” we were in front of a man from the uk who had seen the london show five times, and he and tom struck up a conversation about where they were from.
~nadia brown was so happy to see us! she didn’t remember us lmao but she’s so friendly
~edward james hyland (amos/dumbledore) was…politically campaigning?? the people in front of us were from vermont and he was like “ah…vermont…do you support bernie??” just like that. they were caught off guard but i think they gave an affirmative answer, and he was like “and if he doesn’t get the nomination…?” they were still caught off guard and he just went “you’ll vote blue, right…? cause it’s the right thing to do….?” idk i’m firmly liberal but i thought this was a weird place to get political but okay
~EVERYONE was telling nicholas podany about how much they love telling myself. he was telling the people in front of us about how it was mastered/mixed by solange’s producer(?) and my sister and i exchanged :0 looks. she was getting shy, but i was like “tell him! he’ll love to talk about it, i guarantee it!” because even though i produce 0 content, i *am* an artist and i *do* know that we artists love validation
~so he came to us and she started talking about his songs! we’re fortunate that it was a more rock-y song so we’re…able to sound like we know what we’re talking about lmao. growing up our mom would play us classical music (check out beethoven’s wig yo) and our dad would play us the ramones. one of my earliest memories was arguing with my sister (probably around 4 at the time) about the lyrics to “i wanna be sedated” ahh… (she was correct btw)

~i was right! he was SO excited to talk to us!! my sister complimented the song and the production. she said “i ADORE your new song!! it’s a high key bop!” and he broke into the BIGGEST smile. she was like “i’m gonna play it until i hate it” and he said something along the lines of “i was in the studio listening to it nonstop for 8(??) hours i can’t stand it.” he was talking about how he made the song with his “own scorpius” but i forgot who…he said scorpius and my mind blanked lmao. he’s brought this person up before in interviews so i can probably find it. she complimented the fact that it was different from his usual stuff and he told us about how he had a rock band in high school. @nick where tf is your rock content pls deliver
~i actually spoke this time and cut in to tell him about how she was trying to listen to it on repeat but the signal gave out. she was trying to tell me to shut up but it’s my legal duty as the older sister to embarrass her.
me: “I told her about your song during the intermission—”
her: “don’t!”
me: “no, nO, i told her and she was listening and then she ran out of data—”
him: “aaAa noo!”
her: “I listened to it!”
~then i told him that we loved seeing how he played albus and that we’re going to miss him, that we were going to see the cast change show but we couldn’t get tickets (i kindly left off the reason why), and he was so sweet about it *clenches heart* he told us how much he loves being able to experience this, that we’ll be so lucky to have james romney take over, etc etc i kinda wasn’t listening bc I was too emo, but I remember going “…but I don’t want to say goodbye…” and he just. gave me a sad look like “I know.” there was so much pity in his expression. why is he leaving us.
~the uk guy behind us was talking about how he’d seen the london year 3 and 4. nicholas was like “oh, joe and dom? yeah i’ve spoken to joe and dom—wait, no, i haven’t met dom? i know he has an impressive social media presence” and they started talking about how different actors bring different things to albus and how the show allows them to explore different aspects to their characters and he just…wasn’t making any of this any easier for me lmao i’m mourning the loss of nick!albus and it’s not even march
~i feel bad that we weren’t able to speak with fiona reid (petunia/umbridge) because nicholas was talking to us.
~jonno roberts. this was the first time i’ve interacted w him at sd. his draco has made such an impact on me, he’s my favorite actor in the show, and what do i say? what great words come out of my mouth? “hi you were great.” my sister KICKED me with her heeled boots. good thing i’m a lesbian because my doc martens protected my feet from the force of her anger.
~james snyder was enraptured in conversation with the people in front of us and just took our playbills to sign as he spoke with them. then he went “hi,” passed over us to talk to the guy behind us. my sister was like “you were great!”
~tbh sd was kinda messy bc we were at the end of the line and the barrier things didn’t allow for the actors to get enough room to interact with the fans at the back. also jonno was standing there and he’s not a small man.
~saw several male actors leaving sd, waving goodbye at us and just walking away. MOOD. i was exhausted and i wasn’t the one running around on stage!

MONSTROUS REGIMENT MONSTROUS REGIMENT
It is still one of my favorite fantasy novels. Part of what I like about it is the sheer layer of jokes that goes into it. It’s a Monstrous Regiment, playing off of the famous John Knox pamphlet about the danger of female monarchs, because there is the Duchess, to whom they swear loyalty; there’s literal monsters in it (troll, Igor, vampire); literally all the recruits are women. And the climax of the piece is when they use LITERAL FLOWER/FLOUR POWER TO ESCAPE. God, it’s just so damn clever.
And like... I think with a lot of male authors, you can read the POV of a female character and go, “Gee, this Strong Female Character sure was written by a man!” but no so with Polly! She’s such a fully realized person in her own right, who like... I’m not sure how to explain this, but her gender certainly influences her worldview, and she spends a lot of time questioning why that’s so, but in a way that feels authentic. She’s female yes, but she’s a person first. Which doesn’t always happen with female characters in fantasy novels. And she’s such an entertaining narrator. Man, I love her. I do like and understand why Monstrous Regiment was a one book story, but I do wish I knew what happened to her and Maladict/a after the book ends. (I suppose that’s what fanfic is for, but, you know. Still.)

chapter 6: orchids, stars, and polar bear turds
Friday, June 29th, 1990
Okay, okay, suck it up, you coward, you can’t hide in this bathroom all day eavesdropping. You know he’s stalling and waiting for you to come back to your desk… I mean, no one in their right mind actually just comes by to talk to Greta. I’ve been ducking him all week, but it’s starting to become obvious. Ugh, you’re such a fucking chicken. You can do this. Go. Go. GO!
I open the restroom door and walk around the corner and see Jake engaged in polite conversation with my bridge troll of a supervisor. He’s been listening intently as she drones on about her commute, smiling and adding his own quips about the traffic on I-5, offering the occasional helpful suggestion for an alternate route or a book on tape she might try to help pass the time. I’m dying inside just having listened to her diatribe for a couple minutes, but if he’s feeling the same desperation, none of it shows on his face.
All the same, he grins and nearly jumps out of his skin when he sees me, so maybe he is actually grateful to have an escape from Greta. “Lucy! I’ve been looking for you!”
I try for a smile, but I’m sure it’s more of a wince. We both know I’ve been dodging him ever since the Strawberry Incident. It was so sweet of him. So sweet, and so poorly timed. He’s everything I always thought I wanted in a guy – hey, Mom and Dad, here’s that charming, handsome doctor son-in-law you ordered! – except that he’s kind of… too perfect? Is that possible? Can someone be too perfect to be interesting?
“Hey, Jake.” Greta grunts at me and scuttles off, sensing that her attentive audience has evaporated.
“You’re a hard woman to find,” he beams. “I’ve been wondering if you saw my package.”
I bite the inside of my cheeks and internally curse Cora for being such a bad influence on me. He doesn’t seem to notice he’s said anything funny, so I get a grip, although once the giggles pass, my heart’s still in cornered panicked rabbit mode. “Yeah, uh, the strawberries? Yeah, thanks! We loved them.”
“We?” His smile falters for a nanosecond.
“Oh yeah, a couple of the nurses and I, even Greta. They were delicious.”
He chuckles. “You’re sweet to share them. I was just, uh, thinking of you. I do that a lot, actually…”
Here it comes. Can’t dodge it forever. God, I want to puke.
He goes on. “I was actually thinking we might go out sometime, maybe get some dinner?”
“Oh, uh, Jake, you’re… that’s so sweet of you, really…uhm, I would, but I’m sort of… I’m seeing someone…?” It feels so odd rolling off my tongue, but even after just one week of knowing Jeff, it’s hard to deny that something significant has changed. First, he tracked down my apartment, then I stopped by the Raison d’Etre to spend some time with him after one of his shifts, and tomorrow we have an actual, scheduled, non-stalker-y date. I haven’t had much room in my head for anything else.
I brace for the awkwardness, or maybe even the defensive mockery or insult that usually comes with turning down a guy in my experience. But Jake just blinks before hitching his good-natured smile back into place, and I’m flooded with relief tinged with guilt. Why does he have to be so fucking nice?
“That’s great! I didn’t know that! Of course, girl like you, you must be swatting us away.”
I open my mouth to explain why he’s so wrong, how atypical any of this suitor stuff is for me, but he continues, “well, uh, he’s a very lucky man. Though I’m sure he knows that. What’s his name?”
I bite my lips in to keep from smiling rudely, hanging on to his name as long as I can, wanting to keep it for mine.

Saturday, June 30th, 1990
“Epi-what nows?”
“Epiphytes,” she giggles, tugging me by the hand through the greenhouse. She’s been geeking out over all kinds of flowers and plants for the last two hours, but if possible she’s even more worked up about the ones in this part of the exhibit. We stop in front of this giant cylinder covered with tufts of spiky little plants. “See?”
“I see ‘em, yup…there, uh, there they are, alright,” I nod approvingly, not having the slightest clue why we’re staring at these things but not wanting that excited look on her face to go away.
“Air plants, Jeff, look. See how they don’t have any roots? They’re not planted in any soil?”
“Son of a bitch, you’re right,” I take a step closer and squint at the plants she’s pointing at and realize they’re just hanging onto this column through sheer force of will or something. The more I look at the wall, the more variety I see, like noticing more and more stars the longer you let your eyes focus on the night sky, and I’m starting to understand, if maybe dimly, why she’s staring so raptly at them with that smile dancing on her lips. She turns to me and blushes, her hair a little wilder than usual thanks to the humidity in here.
“I know, it’s weird, I’m really into plants,” she cringes, “you probably hate it, right? We can go if you –”
“No no, how the fuck does this even work?” At first, I was kind of hesitant about a date at the conservatory – I mean it’s free and all, so it’s got that going for it, but who wants to stare at flowers all day? But I’m starting to see the appeal of staring at Lucy when she’s staring at flowers, and now I just genuinely want to understand what the fuck I’m looking at.
“They just grow on all different kinds of surfaces, and they take their moisture and nutrients from the air instead of from extensive root systems in soils. Like, uhm, mosses and stuff? Spanish moss is a good one. But also orchids, and all these bromeliads in here.” I remember the window full of orchids in her place and begin to understand why she wanted to come here. I follow her gaze back up the display wall as she continues in a hushed, reverent voice. “I just think it’s beautiful, the way they fall all over a tree or another plant, not doing any damage like a strangling, needy vine would… just, just a soft blanket all over… just breathing together.”
She falls silent and we both stare at the plants, and I’m trying not to think too hard about how romantic fuckin’ epiphytes turned out to be when I feel her take hold of my hand and lean lightly against my arm.

“Our feast, m’lady,” Jeff turns around holding a giant brown paper bag, having just tipped the delivery guy and nudging the front door closed.
“And what’s the damage?” I grab my backpack and reach in for my wallet, but he takes the bag out of my hands and sets it down, sliding his arms around my waist.
“Nah, forget it, you’re a cheap date,” he mumbles, planting a light kiss on my lips.
“Sure know how to woo a girl,” I grin against his mouth.
“You’re one to talk, Miss ‘I’m really into plants,’” he tickles my ribs and I break away, dodging for safety in the kitchen and sticking my tongue out at him. “You save all the best stuff for the third date, huh?”
“Oh yeah, I’m the mistress of seduction alright. The castration and branding stories were just the bait to reel you in before we started the real foreplay. Chopsticks?”
“Drawer next to the sink. Gotta hand it to you, though, it’s not the worst date I’ve ever been on.”
“Well, this sounds like a promising game…” I hunt around in his kitchen cabinets until I’ve got a couple of plates.
“Shit,” he laughs. “You know I’m just kidding, Luce, right? I had a great time.”
“You’re not getting off the hook that easy, bud. I mean it, what is the worst date you’ve ever had?”
He glances mischievously up at me while dishing out his low mein. “I dunno, I sort of want to hear about yours, you seem too eager for someone who doesn’t have a good horror story up her sleeve…”
“Nuh uh, I asked you first.”
He screws his face up thoughtfully as we sit on the couch with our dinner. “I don’t know, I haven’t had a lot of really awful ones, I guess… there was a blind date in college once that was pretty fuckin’ awkward.”
“Details, please,” I sit opposite him on his couch with my legs folded, awkwardly managing my rice with my chopsticks.
“Okay, so I got home to Big Sandy after a semester away and one of my mom’s friends wanted to try to set me up with her daughter, so my mom went along with it. I don’t think this girl’s mom had any idea who I was or what I looked like or anything, she just knew me as, like, the mayor’s kid…”
“Your dad’s the mayor?”
“And the barber,” he nods with a mouthful of food, “I don’t think I can impress upon you just how tiny this shit town of mine is… anyway, so I had to be pretty well behaved, and pretty clean cut, right?”
“Gonna need some evidence of this ‘clean-cut’ concept when story time’s over,” I tug on a piece of his hair.
“I mean, relatively speaking. Well, I come back from Missoula, having made a bunch of friends who were into punk rock, and I looked the part, you know… or more than I did when I moved away. And this girl’s, like, Polly Purebred, never left home, just completely sheltered and totally freaked out. I probably looked like Sid Vicious to her or something,” he chuckles. “So it wasn’t the end of the world, but she was pretty terrified the whole time, so I found excuses to cut it short and take her home.”
“Very decent of you for a depraved monster.”
“I thought so. And very much my last blind date, too. Your turn!”
“Ah, fuck,” I groan… “I don’t even know which one to go with. Yours was so tame, mine are all going to sound insane.”
His eyes light up as he sets his empty bowl down and rubs his hands together. “Go on…”
“Okayyy… well, it doesn’t really count as a date, but my two most serious boyfriends both came out to me while breaking up with me…”
“Jesus!”
“No, that was the other guy.”
“You dated Jesus?”
“Not quite, but I did go on a date with someone who tried to convert me. Brought all his “so you’re going to hell” pamphlets and shit.”
“Okay, no, that’s got to be your worst one.”
“Don’t you want to hear about the puker?”
He blinks like a deer in headlights. “The…”
“The guy who took me out to dinner and turned increasingly green throughout the meal, and I kept asking if he was okay, until the waiter sets this big piece of salmon down in front of him and he pukes all over it.”
“That’s fucking disgusting!”
“Maybe I shouldn’t tell you the rest…” I wince even thinking about the memory of it, but he’s watching with wide eyes. “…that he… drained it off and then…”
“No he did not. He did not fucking eat the fish. Nope. We’re done here, get the fuck out!” he takes my bowl from my hands and pulls me off the couch, gently shoving me towards the door, but we’re both howling with laughter.
“You’re, like… damaged,” he teases, brushing my hair out of my face.
“Nah, just the usual run-of-the-mill lowered expectations. You’ve got it easy,” I bite my lip and he drops his gaze to my mouth.
“Well, you deserve a lot better than puking and proselytizing…” he places a gentle kiss on the tip of my nose, and I close my eyes to hang onto the sensation of it, the way time is slowing down.
“Sweet talker.” He brushes the backs of his fingers against my cheek as his mouth moves down to mine for a soft, sweet kiss. Well, it started that way, anyway… as soon as I parted my lips, he wound his fingers into my hair and wrapped his other arm around my waist, pulling me into him, and now I’m kissing him back feverishly, winding my arms around his neck, trying to get as close as I can. He shuffles me carefully backward until we find the couch, where we lay down gently and I lose track of everything except the sweetness of being all tangled up together.

What the hell time is it? I crane my neck to look around his apartment for a clock, being careful not to disturb him, but I’m distracted by how gorgeous he looks when he’s asleep. His mouth’s open just slightly and he’s snoring softly underneath me on the couch, one arm still wrapped around my shoulders. We’d been making out like a pair of horny teenagers for who knows how long, before deciding together that we were in no great rush, and enjoying an endless twilight of soft kisses, cuddles, talking, and laughing. Until I guess we fell asleep, and now it’s… 1:17? Holy shit.
Jeff’s arm tightens around me and he stretches his other arm out to the side, letting out a contented rumbling noise.
“Sorry to wake you,” I nuzzle into his neck, planting a few little kisses and breathing him in as he gathers me up into a hug.
“Sorry? Wake me like this a little more often, would you?” he mumbles against my temple.
“It’s late, I should get back downstairs and let you go to bed.” I’m saying it, but not really believing it, and all it takes is one whispered “stay?” into my ear before I settle back into his arms, with no intention of going anywhere.

Thursday, July 19th, 1990
“I’ve fucking missed you! I’m so glad you’re coming home tomorrow. Do you have any idea what a sausage fest my life is now?”
“You say that like it’s bad.”
“Oh shut up, Cor. You had something to do with that, you know.”
Guilty, I think to myself as I laugh at her through the phone. Lucy and I didn’t have a lot of guy friends until a couple of months ago when all these musician types crashed into our lives. Not that I don’t get along well with men. I actually tend to get along with them better than most women, and all my friends in high school were guys, on account of being the only girl in all the science and math clubs. Guys somehow make more sense to my brain. More straightforward, or easier to joke around with, or something. Or maybe it’s having a brother that makes them seem more approachable? Not that my brother is in any way typical of the species, whatever the fuck the stereotype even means. But a crowd of guy friends is something I’ve not had for a long time. I guess since I started college, started dating Alex. Ever since then it’s been one or two close girlfriends. Mad back home, Lucy here in Seattle. Quality friends over quantity, a thought that makes me grin at getting to see Luce tomorrow.
“Yeah, well, I’ll dilute the testosterone a bit when I get back.” I hesitate for a half second, knowing I’m about to embarrass the shit out of my dear, sweet friend, but also just genuinely curious since we’ve been playing phone tag ever since I made it to Alaska three weeks ago and it’s the first time we’ve actually managed to catch up. “And speaking of sausage, how’s it going with Jeff?”
“Damn it Cora!” she laughs. “It’s been going really well. Like, really well.”
“Nuh-uh, not good enough. I need more information. What date are y’all on now?”
“Uhm, I’ve sort of lost track, there were a few days where it was like, distinct dates happening, but for a couple weeks now we’ve seen each other almost every day.”
I wolf-whistle. “Busy three weeks.”
“Oh, hush. I’m a lady, you dumb bitch.” I try and fail to stifle a snort, but even she’s laughing.
“The most refined, clearly. So maybe not that much of a sausage fest, then?”
“We are taking things slow,” she says resolutely. “I mean, well, we’ve done… stuff, but like, we haven't… not yet…”
“You’re adorable, you know you can’t even say it? Haven’t had sex yet?”
“Not yet. We’re not in a rush.”
“Fair. You don’t owe anyone shit, you know, least of all a guy for taking you out.” I don’t even know why I’m lecturing her, except that she has dated a line of assholes as long as my arm.
“I know, Mom. We’re just in that… that dream-like beginning part, you know? Where it’s all new, and time slows down every time you touch, where everything’s about wanting and not having? The part you just don’t ever want to end?”
“Yeah, totally.” Except I don’t really know, but she sounds so lost in her happiness that I should keep that to myself. New topic.
“So are you guys going to the party thing tomorrow night? Stone and Chris’s thing?”
“Yeah, we’ll be there. Are you going?”
“Mmhmm. I think I talked Alex into it.”
“Whoa! So let it be written, the history books shall show that on this day, July 19th, Alex Henderson agreed to hang out with his girlfriend’s friends.”
“Yeah, yeah, wise-ass. Should be interesting.”
“It’ll be fiiiine!” she sing-songs.
“You have approximately zero data points on which to base that conclusion.” I’m imagining Stone and Chris talking to Alex and I don’t know whether to laugh or cringe at the thought. Guess I’ll find out soon enough.
“I’ll be optimistic for both of us, then.”
“Bless your heart. Speaking of the hermit, I should probably give him a call.”
We say our goodbyes, hang up, and I dial home, but I get the machine. I glance at the alarm clock on the nightstand and try not to sound too perplexed as I leave him a message: “Hey, it’s me. Just wanted to hear your voice one more time before I get to see you tomorrow, but maybe you crashed early? You’re turning into such an old man on me, love. Well, if you get this, give me a call back, I’ll be up for a while. And if not, well, I can’t wait to come home to you tomorrow. Love you.”
I’m checking every corner of my shitty motel room one last time to make sure I’ve packed everything when the phone rings about 5 minutes later. Figures, Alex probably crashed on the couch but woke up when he heard my message.
“Hey, gorgeous,” I murmur, “did I wake you up?”
“Gorgeous, huh? Finally seen the light? And no, you didn’t wake me up, I called you, genius. You eat paint chips as a kid, Red?”
“STONE! Fuck you dude,” but I’m laughing my ass off. “What do you want?”
“Child, you cut me to the quick. I’m supposed to want something if I call?”
“Well, A, you’re only two years older than me so cut the ‘child’ shit, and B, it’s you, so…”
“Okay okay, I give, you’re impossible,” he chuckles, “just wanted to say hi. Been a few days.”
Before I left, I’d told him to call me and annoy me every so often to keep me sane on this trip, and he’s been holding up his end of the bargain admirably.
“Yeah,” I grin. “So what’s new?”
I listen quietly while he rambles about the songs he’s writing with Mike, bitches about work, unpacks a tense but seemingly productive dinner he had with Jeff the other night to come to an agreement about working together in a new band. He asks about how the sampling trip is going, prods me for the nth time to make sure I’m coming to his birthday thing tomorrow. We take turns giving each other shit, as usual. After a while, the conversation falls into a comfortable silence and a quick glance at the clock shows that we’ve already been talking for almost an hour, although it’s only seemed like a few minutes have gone by. Somehow, Stone became one of those people to me faster than almost anyone else I’ve ever known. One of the ones you can talk about everything and nothing with, who gets the jokes and gives them back, who it’s easy to be easy with. After a while, he speaks back up.
“So, what are you getting me for my birthday?”
“Haha, presumptuous much? Just where and when am I supposed to be doing birthday shopping? Do you forget I’ve been marooned above the Arctic Circle digging in dirt for three weeks?” I’m giving him maximum sass, which is no less than he deserves, but I feel a spasm of guilt. In truth, I already found Chris a present, but I still have no idea what to get for Stone.
“No excuse for poor planning, Red.”
“Okay. Fossilized polar bear turd it is.”
“Nice talk.”
“You knew what you were signing up for.”
He clucks his tongue and sighs, but the conversation sags without his usual immediate zinger. “Yeah,” is all he says after a moment. I shake my head at the phone. He’s weirder than usual tonight.
“Alright, I’ll play. What do you want for your birthday?”
“I was just kidding, Cora, don’t get me anything. Just come hang out.”
“I can handle that. But that wasn’t my question.”
“I mean it. I just want to have a fun night with my friends. It’s… it’s been kind of a year, you know?”
Andy. I nod stupidly for a moment before remembering he can’t see me. “Yeah, yeah.” Once again, we fall quiet for who knows how long before he breaks the silence.
“So is Alex picking you up at the airport tomorrow?”
He hasn’t been giving Alex derogatory hillbilly names recently. I’m not even sure when that stopped, but I didn’t notice, and for whatever reason, I kind of miss it.
“No, my car’s there, I’ll drive myself home.”
“WHAT?? Where’s the romance in that? Come on, Jethro, step it up, buddy.” Oh, well there it is.
“And you are the expert on romance since when?”
“You don’t even know, Red,” he purrs. “Hey! Stop laughing! I’m serious!”
“Sure you are. Hate to inform you, Stoner, but Friday’s a work day for most productive members of society. My flight lands at like 2. I don’t expect the world to stop turning for me.”
“Yeah, but asking your boyfriend to meet you at the airport’s not asking the world to stop turning. It’s asking for something people are just supposed to do for one another. I’d think he’d want to.”
“I didn’t ask him!” I’m not even sure why I’m yelling. Are we fighting?
“Okay, okay. Easy. I didn’t mean anything by it.” There’s a bit of a pause, a strained one this time, and I’m not really sure what to say to fill it, but Stone speaks up after a moment.
“You know… if you ever need a ride to the airport, some of us unproductive members of society would be happy to oblige. You dropped everything to drive our asses all over the place when you barely even knew us. I’m just saying, I’m happy to return the favor anytime.”
“I…”
“Don’t make it weird, Cora. Just… just ask. Anytime.”
“Thanks, Stone,” is all I can manage to say as I turn the offer over in my mind. I’m genuinely touched, and also a little confused, before he breezes on like nothing happened.
“So we might have a line on a potential singer…”

New Year Book Club; 20 books to Inspire

I have had quite the book obsession lately, as my Grandma would joke, “Do you know what they call me? — a bibliophile”, which means lover of books. But seriously, I have been spending way too many books lately, I justify it in my mind because reading is great for your mind, I love learning and many of the books I read have helped me grow. That and Powell’s Books is fucking amazing, right by my house, and honestly has the best pricing I’ve ever seen! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Powell’s, it is the worlds largest independent bookstore and literally takes up an entire city block. If you’re ever in Portland, it’s my number one recommendation.
As a bibliophile, I have a long list of books I would recommend and an even larger list of ones I want to read. So here is a list of books that inspired me to write the 2020 Health Series as well as books I am interested in reading this year to continue the healing!
Imperfect Spirituality
Polly Campbell
This book is beyond eye-opening and heart-changing in a number of ways. Hitting hard on how the ego is afraid of imperfection, making us fearful of it. But when we act from fear, we can make disastrous and harmful decisions, even if we don’t mean for them to be. Perfection is unattainable, and in the words of Polly Campbell herself:
“When we stick to a narrow path and the perspective that there is only one right way of doing things, we miss out on the wisdom and opportunities we need and crave to grow and live a purposeful life.”
Where to Begin

This book of poetry is an inspiring one you’ll want to reread over and over. Cleo Wade has a way with words and her many poems, notes, and stories throughout this book make you feel warm inside, especially with this cold and gloomy winter.

Honestly, this is my bible. I have read and reread this book front to back and back to front. The tales that Dr. Estées vividly shares in this book carry a weight of importance and guidance for the reader. Often diving into the depths of the psyche and archetypes. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has never read.
Witches Sluts Feminists
Kristen J. Sollee
Get ready to get pissed off. But in the most informing and liberating way. This book should also come with a TRIGGER WARNING. I generally do not get triggered when reading, but this got me. I recommend taking it slow, chapter by chapter. And if you need to stop and digest, stop! I know I had to put down the book a lot because I would be like WTF?, but again, SO INFORMATIVE and really reshaped the way I think about certain things.
The Desire Map
Danielle LaPorte
This book is one I have read through, just picked up in a random spot and restarted over and over. The Desire Map helps you define your core desires, core beliefs, and core desires. This book is a true guide to creating goals with soul’. If you do purchase this book, I would recommend not writing in the workbook section and instead of using a journal. I bought this book for myself about 5 years ago and still redo the workshops to this day. It’s nice to leave blank for a restart.
Emergent Strategy
Adrienne Maree Brown
Change is constant and when you resist change, you create your own suffering. While accepting certain things and trying to move through them is easier said than done, Emergent Strategy is a ‘radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help’ book that helps us adapt and shape change.
A Girl’s Guide to Joining the Resistance
Emma Gray
Published two years post-Trump [p.s.: when I type ‘fuck’ into my phone, my autocorrect changes is to ‘fucktrump’ because I’ve said that so many times. Just a happy quirk to brighten your day] this book starts with the horrors of what that fucker was able to accomplish in his first few months. But more importantly! This book goes into details of what YOU can do, how we can resist and continue to fight for what is right, what is moral, and for the change we demand to see.

Amanda Seales
Comedian, writer, actress, and quite frankly political activist, Amanda lays it the fuck out in this book and it is a must read. This book is full of essays, illustrations, authenticity, and inherent truths empowering readers to find their own truth and grow!
Profit over People
Noam Chomsky
Noam Chomsky is known as “the father of modern linguistics” and a major philosopher. He was an outspoken opponent to the U.S. and Vietnam War, and known for his overall antiwar stance and activism.
This book, People Over Profit, discusses neoliberalism and global order, discussing the root of the crisis and tracing the history of neoliberalism. Chomsky exposes the increasing interference by the private sector in global affairs and highlights movements of resistance.

Malala was 10 when the Taliban took over her home, Swat Valley in Pakistan. When they said girls couldn’t go to school, Malala spoke out and the Taliban found her and gunned her down. After a bullet in the head, she didn’t stop, she didn’t back down, and she doesn’t even hate them!! No wonder she was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

A book of poetry, illustrations and beautiful stories. Cleo has been called “the Millennial Oprah” by New York Magazine and I couldn’t agree more! Her words are so beautiful, empowering and inspiring. This book focuses on poetic wisdom for a better life.

Witty, highly educational, and absolutely no fucks given in regards to Mike Pence, this book is a must fucking read! If you are pissed off about ‘the man’ or the system, but you’re looking to educate yourself and know your shit about issues, this is it. While it may not look like the most factual book, Erin Gibson really did her research and lays it out in easy to read laughable segments.

‘Merry Kitschmas’ Wedding Styling
There’s Christmas wedding styling and then there’s ‘Kitschmas’ wedding styling! These ideas throw traditional Christmas out of the window and bring in kitsch and vintage wonders.
Rock ‘n’ Roll events planner Michaela of Clear Hearts really thought outside of the box with these styling ideas, showing you really can have a wedding as personal as you are, and that Christmas weddings are not all about Christmas trees and holly. These ideas are fabulously over the top and create an all out fun vibe that will fill Christmas with cheer! Think bold, garish and sparkly and you’ve hit the nail on the head.
The decoration is crammed with detail, from pom pom wreaths to cute plastic Babycham-esque deer, trolls (do you remember them?!) and even a bridal jacket covered with teddy bears. This really is a crazy alternative to traditional Christmas styling.
For many, Christmas is all about the food, and the sweet treats in this shoot are spectacular, especially the amazing croquembouche cake full of Christmas delights including cute gingerbread houses.
One last thing I must mention before you go ahead and enjoy these really cool Kitschmas wedding styling ideas, captured by Chloe Lee Photography, is the bride’s shoes. I’m pretty sure you will never have seen a pair of shoes like them… pom poms, a glitzy Father Christmas and snowman, red bows and calligraphy!

“The idea of the ‘Merry Kitschmas’ wedding theme was born from my love of ‘more is more’, Bjork and artists like Paul Yore. This mixed with Chloe Lee’s love of all things kitsch, Disney and O.T.T. meant the cuteness flowed.
“The shoot team all brought some of their favourite Christmas kitsch items for me to add into the styling. It made for such a great selection and made the van full of fun.”
Naughty or Nice
“The ‘naughty or nice’ shoes by Beretun Designs are a Christmas dream, and paired with the groom’s ‘play nice’ hand tattoo was a great little tie in. The jacket (WOW) and pom pom earrings are by the amazing and unique Sassy Freak. The cutest bridal headpiece came from McFayden Millinery, which we styled with a simple yet stunning two piece from Halo and Wren boutique. A flower hoop from Sweet Pea Rosa made our bride look delightfully regal in her soft toy hat and jacket.
“Our ‘is he or isn’t he?’ Santa model wore a bespoke red velvet suit from the talented Karlus G Tailor. Combined with a bow tie and pocket square from the stylish LV Made in England, it was a fresh take on a standard wedding suit. For the light up necklace and lapel piece I told Fwaylawn to “go for it”, and boy did she!
“Kayleigh K brought her personal style of flawless bright skin and she added some beautiful sparkle to fit our theme.”
Sweetness of Christmas
“This shoot was all about the tasty sweetness of Christmas. The original Anges De Sucre delivered this in full force with a croquembouche that caused squeals of delight as each new person saw it.
“The cake with hanging biscuits was the genius idea of Malarkey Cakes, who also made the sparkly doughnuts hanging on the DIY mini doughnut wall. Adorable biscuit pops eliminated any sticky finger problems for the bride and groom.
“Paper Hearts Paintings did a beautiful job of illustrating Yazz and Chris’s likeness, and it turned out the couple were already big fans of her work. What a lovely Christmas gift they got to keep after the fun day of shooting.
“The video from Electric Blue shows that kitsch can be rock ‘n’ roll too. She showed off the Trolls and Polly Pockets I found in my parents’ loft to perfection, and I can’t wait to see more weddings in 2019 featuring these!
