Superman IV The Quest for Peace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May the fourth film be with all VHS-raised retro kids as top pop-culture author and movie mind Mark Edlitz (THE LOST ADVENTURES OF JAMES BOND) publishes a unique and somewhat brilliant look at the fourth film complex. As soon as Mark introduced this idea to me a while back I knew he was onto something brilliant. With MOVIES GO FOURTH is published this 1980s kid is savoring how right I was. To put it in a context, this is a book that dives deep into THUNDERBALL and surfaces for unique interviews and insight into JAWS - THE REVENGE. This is a book that seriously focuses on CARAVAN OF COURAGE, POLICE ACADEMY 4 - CITIZENS ON PATROL and does not ignore ROCKY IV or SUPERMAN IV - THE QUEST FOR PEACE. Fourthly, not only is the book blessed with new artwork by Pat Carbajal , Edlitz serves up a delicious sense of 'what if' with the likes of SPIDER MAN IV and THE GODFATHER - PART IV. TERMINATOR, DIRTY HARRY, STAR TREK IV - THE VOYAGE HOME, HALLOWEEN 4, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4, BATMAN AND ROBIN, RAMBO, CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and - hell yes - ERNEST GOES TO JAIL all march forth across each and every page as Edlitz dissects what a fourth sequel should be, can be and sometimes just was. 4/4! Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (USA, 1987): 🍿

Thoughts on the Police Academy movie series
I've been a fan of the Police Academy movies for as long as I can remember and watched them whenever they appeared on TV. I've never actively gone out of my way to watch them however, so I had no idea which movie was which. I finally decided to watch through them all and felt like sharing my thoughts. For your information, the boxset I own only contains the movies, so this doesn't talk about the two TV shows that apparently exist. Let's start with a synopsis of each movie.
The first movie is of course Police Academy, in which a bunch of misfits? (Mahoney, Jones, Tackleberry, Hightower, Hooks, and more) join the titular academy, helmed by Commandant Eric Lassard. We follow them on their journey to becoming fully fledged officers of the law.
In Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, the new officers have been called in to help a station in trouble, where they must attempt to stop Zed and his gang from terrorizing the city, all the while Mauser is trying to sabotage for them.
In Police Academy 3: Back In Training, our cast of characters is about to expand as Zed, Sweetchuck, and others join the academy. This time, the original class are among the teachers. The new class must succeed, or else the academy could be shut down.
For Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol, Commandant Lassard has come up with a new initiative, in which a group of citizens work together with the police to help report crimes. How could this possibly go wrong?
Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach sees Commandant Lassard get honored as police of the decade, which takes him and the gang to Miami where he'll accept this award. Meanwhile, a band of thieves have stolen some highly valuable diamonds. These have managed to come come in the Commandant's possesion, and now they must find a way to get them back.
Police Academy 6: City Under Siege sees the gang on another mission. A mysterious set of robberies have been happening around town, all executed perfectly. For this to happen, they seem to get information from within the force, but who could be their informant?
The seventh movie, Police Academy: Mission To Moscow, once again has our protagonists travel somewhere, this time to Russia where they'll investigate the creator of a suspicious hit game.
With that out of the way, a bit on the structure of the movies. Watching them, I felt that 1 through 4 (maybe with the exception of 2) had a structure of "location, situation, what do?": Our characters are at a location, say a gym; Here our characters will do something, say train on various manuevers; What fun things can happen with this premise? Then you get some fun scenarios out of this, like Michael Winslow doing his "kung fu master" bit, Sweetchuck getting defeated by an old lady, or all the times the students fawn over Callahan. Doesn't lend itself well to an involved story, but works great for a comedy like these.
5 through 7 (and maybe 2) on the other hand felt more story focused, as they didn't seem to follow the structure described above. More focus was given to the villains, taking time away from the protagonists. While I enjoyed 6, both 5 and 7 were "location movies" at the same time. 5 was a trip to Florida and there were therefore a lot of shots you typically see in movies sponsored by resorts: activities you can do there. For example, a lot of the shots featured during the beach scene were essentially tourists enjoying the beach; felt like there weren't a ton of jokes there. Same goes for the the limbo scene, not a whole lot of jokes. As for 7, it taking place in Russia meant they had to focus on its culture, like the circus and the family. Both of these movies have redeemable qualities (I liked 5's ending section and Lassard's time wih the Russian family in 7 was fun), but don't have the same quality as the others, especially as both introduce a new straight man to replace the one who left.
All of the movies are fun to some degree, so I recommend them all... except for 7. Mission to Moscow is just a boring movie. I felt that many jokes didn't very well, and its cast being what it was didn't help. Regarding the cast, essentially half the cast is gone from this entry. Only Commandant Lassard, Jones, Tackleberry, Callahan, and Harris return, so with half the character archetypes gone it feels rather empty, and with no character for Harris to bounce off of it feels like everyone is being extra mean to him. It's just not up to par.
Regarding the cast, I feel they had a retention problem. 1 through 4 felt like they built up the cast: 1 introduced everyone, 2 kept most of them and put them on a mission, 3 introduced new cadets including characters from 2, and 4 kept some while introducing more. Starting with 5, the focus was solely on the main cast, as there were no new cadets and basically everyone introduced after the first movie were gone. Regarding removed characters, since Mahoney didn't return for 5, they felt the need to replace him with a new straight man, this being Nick Lassard, the Commandant's nephew. He was fine, but he was also replaced after the sixth movie, where a cadet named Connors takes the straight man role. Instead of replacing Mahoney (twice), I feel like they maybe should've given the straight man role to Callahan. In a world of absurd characters, I feel she was the least absurd of the ones remaining, so she could've taken over the role and removed the need to introduce new characters. Of course, if you want the straight man to be a man with a love interest who's a woman, the straight man being a woman doesn't work.
Anyway, go watch them if you want. Prepare for the eight movie's release, whenever that is. Apparently it was announced back in 2003? Should be out soon, then.

Police brutality nationwide has often raised eyebrows on the training practices in US policing. The faulty training regimes in the US policing enable officers to take more lives of citizens than in any other developed nation. A report from an independent project shows that almost a thousand people lose their lives every year to police violence, although the number increases in agitated years. While other countries observe standardized training practices, the lack of it in the US often results in police violence. According to Health Metrics and Evaluation, the United States has the 28th highest rate of gun violence in the world, and police departments have a significant contribution to it. Whether it is about mistaking a taser for a gun or choking people to death, the issue, if it remains unaddressed, can bring a lot of chaos into society. [caption id="attachment_8104" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Poor training practices in US policing is one of the major reasons for the violent police behaviour against civilians.[/caption] Training Practices in US Policing: Police Training in the United States Lacks Standards The erstwhile job of the police departments before the Civil War in the US mostly revolved around returning the stolen properties and capturing runaway slaves. The duty was force-centric. So the police in the US are supposedly inheriting the use of force against Black individuals, and training seems not to change this inherited mindset. Police officers in Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Iceland, and Norway are unarmed when they carry out a patrol. They are allowed to carry arms only in special circumstances, while police officers in America can carry firearms even when they are not on duty, depicting the lack of training practices in US policing. In Japan, police officers have to surrender their weapons when going off duty, and interestingly, Japan is the safest country with the least number of gun violence incidents. Police academies in the United States lack basic training standards. They tend to apply the use of force while completely ignoring communication and restraint. Consider the following data of police brutality in the US, for example.   Country Killings by law enforcement in 2019 USA 1099 Netherland 4 England 3 Iceland 0   The data reveals extraordinary incompetence in tackling civilians in the USA. There is a school of thought claiming that having firearms in civilians’ hands is one of the reasons for escalating brutality by police. While the guns regulations in the US need dramatic changes, interrelating both is also a falsified approach. For instance, almost 32% of people in Finland carry firearms, but police shootings incidents are next to none. The responsibility of this brutality in the USA lies in the poor training practices in US policing. The Bureau of Justice Statistics of 2013 reveals that police academies in the United States spend almost 71 hours on training with firearms while only 21 hours are spent on de-escalation training. Firearms training in other countries is a lot different from the United States. Germany’s firearm training, for example, teaches officers how to avoid using weapons. In Japan, police officers are taught martial arts instead of training them with firearms. These other countries do train their officers with firearms, but they prefer using it as a last resort.   Training Duration in US Police: Shorter Period, Greater Powers On average, every police officer spends around 21 weeks in these academies before moving into the field. According to a report released by Institute for Criminal Justice Training Reform, United States spends far less time as compared to other developed countries on training police officers. As most of this already less time is spent on promoting the use of force, the results are evi
dent. Norway trains its officers for three years, and only four people were killed by police violence in Norway between 2002 and 2016. Similarly, Finland and Iceland train their police officers for two years, and seven and one people have been killed in police violence between 2000 and 2018, respectively. Interestingly, states require barbers to get more training than police officers. Some states even require less than 21 weeks of police training. In Minneapolis, police officers are trained for 16 weeks only, not to mention it is the home of George Floyd and Daunte Wright’s murder. This negligence in training practices in US policing is one of the reasons of this much brutality. Derek Chauvin was a training officer who was training two rookie cops as he held down his knee on George Floyd’s neck.  Seeing the numbers, it is easy to see that the time of training is inversely proportional to police use of brutal force against civilians.   Read More: George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to end Police Brutality [caption id="attachment_8106" align="aligncenter" width="1136"] Better training opportunities is a primary reason why police in the developed nations other than the USA perform their duty smoothly[/caption] Police Playing God in the USA: All-Powerful Police is the Real Curse Police in the United States are overpowered and are supposedly overburdened too. In the United States, the responsibilities of police officers are sometimes beyond their capabilities. Local officers in the United States make arrests, patrol communities, investigate crime, issue traffic citations, respond to mental health crises in some cases, noise complaints, and domestic disputes. Some experts argue that allowing this broad mandate is itself a beginning of allowing police officers to go wild. Other countries have different wings that are specifically trained for these situations. For example, in Stockholm, Sweden, mental health emergencies are responded to by a special unit that is trained for such situations. England and Wales have community support officers who deal with domestic disputes, fine people who litter or confiscate alcohol from a minor. These officers must ask the police before making any arrest. The establishment of these units has marked a significant decline in police violence. It is the need of the hour in the US as well to make alternate strategies to control police.   Read More: Biden can Start Transforming Police by Taking Executive Actions   Final Thoughts Sweden has only one national force that is overseen directly by the federal government. France has three forces, one of them deals with cities, the other with rural areas, and the last one for municipalities. England and Wales also have regional forces, but they are overseen directly by the central government, just like France. The United States has over 18,000 law enforcement agencies ranging from local police to federal police. Every state has its different law enforcement departments, such as the New York Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department, and North Carolina Police Department. Despite having these many agencies, the nationally embraced training practices in US policing are lacking.

Modern au careers
For Kaeya, Jean, Zhongli, Ningguang and Venti
Something quick between longer posts!
Kaeya:
Kaeya would totally rock being a police officer you can’t convince me otherwise
He and Diluc went though the academy together. Diluc dropped out and took another career path which left Kaeya feeling kinda betrayed cause they were going to be awesome cops together! That was the plan :/ oh well
He’d excel in the police academy, he’s physically fit and fast which makes it easy for him to go through training
He won’t be a captain/commander for a long time since that’s a high position that takes years of testing and promotions to get to so for now let’s just settle for officer
He loves being out on the road doing real police work! There are plenty of times where he has to sit at his desk to write reports which he doesn’t exactly enjoy but oh well, it comes with the job
He won’t be promoted for awhile since he’s only 23 but man oh man, he’s been on the job for 2 years and he already has the best stories of chases, public interactions and just general stories about messing around back at the station
Kaeya isn’t exactly supposed to but when the K9 is in the building, he’ll neglect his work to go play with the dog :’)
He doesn’t have a long term plan, he’s taking things one step at a time and loving every minute of it
Jean:
She’s also a police officer, she ranked very high in the academy and graduated the year before Kaeya! They work at the same station
Jean and Kaeya work together a lot! They are even partners most of the time! They have a lot of laughs but Jean is really the one keeping Kaeya in charge
Her goal is to be the chief of police one day! The first female chief in a looooong time
She takes her paperwork seriously, she almost never makes mistakes. Additionally, she patrols populated areas so citizens will see her face and she can chat with people! She wants them to trust her! And she wants to learn about the people she has sworn to protect
There are female bosses above her who she really looks up to and aims to impress! She hopes they’ll be the ones to promote her too :)
After her long shifts she’s always happy to come home to her sister Barbara to tell her alllll about what she did at work that day! She’s Barbara’s biggest role model so Jean strives to do her best at work in order to come home to tell Barbara all about it
Barbara has her mom drop her off at the police station on the weekends to bring lunch for Jean! They eat together in the break room away from everyone else to catch up! Jean also helps Barbara with her schoolwork when she can :) she’s a great older sister
Zhongli:
A history professor who looks....really good for his age
He’s 40 but he doesn’t look a day over 25, all of his students either want to date him or hate the way he drawls on for hours
He’s super qualified for his job, he’s studied in China, Japan, Russia and Italy, he knows pretty much everything anyone would need to know about history
He specializes in Chinese history though and even teaches a Chinese history course for honors students who are truly interested in the subject
Zhongli is super patient with his students though he can be strict when he needs to be. If he sees them falling behind he’ll meet with them after class in order to figure things out “if you need more time to finish these papers, I can give that time to you. However, I would hope you take these seriously. Education is important. Not only that but you paid to take this class, I’d hate to see you fail...’
Zhongli is a father of two, Xiao and Ganyu and failure in school is not an option for either of them lmao Zhongli helps them with every subject. Failing math? He’ll get a tutor. Failing english? Don’t worry, he’s multilingual and will help. Failing science? He’ll stay up all night watching videos about chem or bio in order to reteach it to his kids the next day.
He loves his kids very much...he has tons of pictures of them on his desk at work and he constantly gets notifications saying he’s almost out of storage on his phone lmao
Ningguang:
M’lady <3
Ms. Ningguang is a super successful businesswoman. She is super into the stock exchange, she is constantly buying and selling stocks
She is also the CEO of a luxury makeup brand. She took over the position and turned the basic, bland brand into something truly special
She’s been on the cover of many magazines all over the world with her success story! She went from wandering the streets as an orphan to a wealthy businesswoman.
Ningguang has a gorgeous house and two, luxurious sports cars. Dayum...You go girl!!!!
She sponsors multiple orphanages and plans on adopting kids when she settles down a little cause she is constantly on the move, she doesn’t have time for a kid right now...though she would love to be a mother :’)
Venti:
Venti has multiple jobs and his additional job history is hilarious to look at because this man gets bored too easily!! So he’ll just...quit spontaneously
He’s had 3 past jobs as a bartender and got fired from all 3 for excessive drinking, he worked at a dog shelter for a month and quit because a dog puked on his shoe, he was a receptionist for a dentist’s office and was fired for yelling at an old lady (she deserved it though!!), he worked at a Target for 4 months and quit because his coworkers gave him too much stuff to do (they did not but he felt like they did)
He’s really done everything!! He has plenty of good stories to tell at the bar with his buddies!
Now he’s a songwriter. Well, he’s been a songwriter for a long time but now it’s official
But being a songwriter isn’t exactly...profitable for him yet. So he’s holding down 3 jobs. A Starbucks barista, a KFC cook and a Khols cashier. He’ll get you that sweet, sweet khols cash baby!
Is he successful? No, not yet but he will be!! Hopefully!! He makes a lot of money when he sings at bars or restaurants so he has a lot of faith in himself!
Venti is the definition of a free spirit so who knows what he’ll be doing in a month from now!! He sure as hell doesn’t know lmao
