Social blunder/moment my psyche likes to throw at me now and then to make me cringe to the max #1:

I was in the debate club at sixth form, and the topic we were debating was whether or not the classic sexy magazines should be banned or censored on grounds of sexism.

I was given the 'Ban Those Mags' side, so, naturally I go hard on eating disorders and other mental health issues created by women being constantly compared to skinny, booby models, right?

The guy opposing me argued that hey, men get body issues too (of course) and they do get sexualised too (also yes), so this wasn't anything unique.

I said well sure, I don't disagree that there's a problem there, but I don't exactly see every guy walking around going "Must Be Muscular"

And... You know those stories you hear, where someone said something amazing and funny "and everyone clapped"? I got the nightmare version.

I was the only girl in the room. Aside from the teacher.. everyone laughed. Immediately.

My perception was altered in a way I didn't get to explain. If I'd been able to heave the giant rock out of my stomach in time, I would have said something like "Okay, alright, point taken, just because I don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. But look at the differences here. Trying to get buff is not as damaging as literally starving yourself to death."

I still think it wouldn't have been a great argument- I mean, it is objectively true in one sense, trying to gain muscle means you need exercise and protein, which are less likely to kill you than literally not eating anything, or going through plastic surgery to get a flat stomach and breast implants or something. But it does ignore everything outside of those narrow examples, and really, no-one should have to live their lives constantly in fear about how others see their bodies.

I think about how I could have spoken up before he got chance to and faced the boys head-on, asked them "So you're all damaged by it yeah?" And have them go "Well duh" or "Kinda!" And then I could have said "THEN FIGHT TO BAN THIS CRAP! Once women get to ban Playboy Bunny mags, it'll pave the way for you guys to get in there and help each other out! Ban the mags on both sides!!"

That would have been a compelling argument.

I wish though that I'd been able to explain it better in the first place. Move it away from my experience and look at the evidence. Or, perhaps more accurately, explain a woman's perspective.

Compare Our magazines to theirs. List movies where a completely mundane, middle-of-the-road guy gets to be the lead in movie after movie, but his love interest always has to be thin, sub-30, with model-level looks and flawless hair. I could have communicated that whether or not boys felt pushed towards an ideal, the world constantly showed that attractiveness is Not a make-or-break thing for men's success in life, it isn't rammed down their throats everywhere they look, it's okay to be an average-looking guy, but not girl.

I'd have brought magazines showcasing male celebs with their clothes ON and their shape less important. And dared them to find a single image in their magazines of a famous woman in "respectable", office-safe clothing, not posed to show off their body.

But no.

Instead, I only looked at the surface of the issue, said something completely ignorant, and then crumbled as the whole club laughed at my dumb-ass take.

I know better now, but I still can't hear any talk about body image/expectation equality or anything like that without reliving that moment, and it is excruciating.

Are you familiar with Lorry Hill on youtube? She makes videos about plastic surgery celebs have had done, even the most discreet ones. I feel like she would definitely point out a change in his eyes, theres just something going. Maybe a slight upper blepharoplasty?

I have watched some of her videos, i follow a lot of similar accounts and i find it extremely interesting 👀

i generally think blepharoplasty is pretty noticeable even when done modestly. i’d have to really analyze some HQ photos lol

Thank you so much for the compliment! I call out a woman who stands for performative feminism when it suits her while in actual fact she’s a classic example of a woman written by a man. A woman who is besties with a known rapist, abuser and a pedophile, that’s 3 different men! A racist, homophobic ignorant woman who takes credit for other people’s work. A shitty mom who uses her kids as pawns for a stunt that’s even more obvious than KarJenner plastic surgery. A woman who uses impressionable 12-15 year olds for her own monetary gain, claiming all natural pics while being heavily air brushed and photoshopped, setting a shitty example for the aforementioned young girls who will never attain that standard, as even the celebs themselves don’t look like that. A woman whom I’ve had the displeasure of meeting twice, and who treats other people like crap if they can’t do anything for her. A woman with a major arrogance problem that’s based on absolutely no own merit, work or talent. That’s the type of person I will ALWAYS call out and I am proud to have the morals, values and intelligence to do so. Three assets Olivia Cockburn severely lacks.

Jensen loves Danni so why do you hate her?- At what point in time did liking a celeb come with a mandatory you-need-to-like-their-spouse too? tf. I don't Also, why aren't we allowed to talk about plastic surgery? Yeah we don't like her but some of us are concerned about her continuous plastic surgery given the recent news about Linda Evangelista being left permanently disfigured. No one should have a whole face of botox at 40!

I remember that Anon, since when do we all have a contract that commits us to loving someone's spouse too? lol I wonder the same thing about plastic surgery, she's an Actress, her look directly affects her castability, Casting Directors do take an issue with her choices and it looks like she doesn't know when to stop. Besides, people are allowed to comment/critique when it's a business that is centered on looks. People get overly sensitive about the comments we make and this shows they are not in touch with showbiz at all. It's all about the look an Actor has and messing with that often leads to less and less opportunities because it's like Coca Cola suddenly changing their branding to something that makes no sense brand wise but expecting people to view it the same. Plenty of celebs have damaged their careers with plastic surgery, botox overload, etc. Let's not forget Jennifer Grey's comment "I went into the operating room a celebrity and came out anonymous." Linda, omg, I remember that, what an incredible face she had, coolsculpting damaged it to the point where she is unrecognizable.

i think pointing out plastic celebrity on female celebrities and raising awareness so like teens and impressionable people know that it isn’t natural is good, but a lot of posts and stuff about it are just incredibly weird and also guess work and like i think it’s kind of harmful? people’s bodies can change naturally, like idk we as a culture are so obsessed with plastic surgery and judging it and i won’t deny especially in hollywood like 99% of female celebs have at least fillers/botox and the men too but it’s like is posting side by side pictures of them as a young teen and then in their 30s really like doing anything? lol anyway.. idk. unless it’s someone like the kardashians/jenners or really obvious im like whatever idk rambling random thoughts dont rb

For me it’s like I don’t care if celebs admit or don’t say anything when they got work done like the whole kardashian klan aside because their body issues and what’s they project onto society is toxic I don’t think anyones plastic surgery is anyone else’s business unless they want to discuss it themselves and I don’t expect celebs who did get work done to admit they got work done like I don’t know like I view celebs purely for my enjoyment and have no expectations for them it’s quite obvious people in Hollywood pay lots of money to look the way they do and I love going on blogs pointing out plastic surgery transformations purely for my own interest but idc enough if that makes like unless they come out and say they look the way they do because of diet and working out when it’s obvious they got stuff done then I’m like 👀 but like idc enough to need to point it out

yeah Its honestly just fun to have the lightbulb moment of being like Oh!!!! They look like that because they had something done

Hey bestie. So I’m sorry if asking about H is annoying to you, you should totally not answer this if talking abt him makes u uncomfortable. But I value your opinion, even though I don’t agree w how harsh you can b on him(I understand it tho- to an extent. Kind of.)

I was wondering, do you think he was ever a really REALLY good person? Thing is - I joined the fandom this year in April. I joined cus of Larry Since they looked cute as fuck on a post I saw and that led to watching all those vids, streaming 1d, streaming their solos, etc. I was never fully sold on Larry once I started seeing the antis points tho- and I unlarried last month, thank god. I’m a louie now (w a sprinkle of Ziall), that man is the loml. But before I became a fan(and mind you I’ve never been in fandom this deep unless we count fictional stuff) - I always had this specific eh vibe from Harry, partly bc Of the fact that he’s besties w the karjenner klan(Kendall mostly), and I do not trust anyone who’s super close w them. Same way I don’t trust the hadids, many really huge celebs, etc. Not bc they’re plastic or rich cus mf I’d get surgery and buy a mansion too, just bc they’re SO out of touch w reality nd EVERY person who meets these huge celebs at events says they’re stuck up egotistical trash(not Taylor tho, never Tay).

But beside that- when I originally read articles abt Harry the homewrecker womanizer(even back in 2018 when I tried stanning/researching him but I just didn’t like his songs or 1Ds, I do now tho) I thought “ew…he’s a typical cheating rockstar,” and yet the articles were hyping him up which made me go ??? I know most ppl glorify this whole image of celebs being better than normal ppl in the vainest emptiest least significant ways,, but I never have so that’s why I couldn’t relate. Which is why the harries (and literally all stans) just made me roll my eyes.

Also his fans scared me off for years in the sense that they’re so - weird? Like why y’all SO obsessed w him? Why do y’all make such a big deal abt something as vain and unimportant as his fashion? Ofc some ppl are gonna think it’s weird to dress that way- and he shouldn’t be bullied for it but it’s clothes and he prolly don’t care abt that criticism. So why spend hours defending it? Why attack ppl who don’t think he looks sexy? Don’t make sense to me tbh. He’s not 18 yk, he won’t cry if some dudebros think he’s gay bc of dressing camp. Not that gay is an insult in any way- but u get what I mean. Hell the fact that his fans are so againts ppl calling him gay is weird to me but I get why they’d get mad at larries, cus we all know some overstep. I know the last point and being defensive over H is something that’s happened since 1D. And as far as important things abt him such as his honor, his image, the way he and the boys were treated by salmon/ psyco/mngmnt go; I completely understand getting defensive over it. I completely get him being ppls sex idol- cus I was 14 and into heartthrobs once too. Sex sells, unfortunately. But I just didn’t get why Harry fans are not only intense(in the way directioners were/are) but just downright mean to everyone else in the name of stanning someone who I think lost his SUPERDUPER stanable qualities after live on tour.

I actually like harrys music- golden is my jam. Fine line and others hit too. I love his voice- it’s powerful and he sounds great live (I did attend his concert in oct, kinda a 300$ regret now but aye I like his songs and it was fun so whatever), but I just don’t get WHY they Stan him so hard. I get why they did in the 1D years. I get why ppl still Stan Louis complex Tomlinson and zayn deep thinker Malik; as well as Niall unproblematic Horan(liams eh too I just don’t care for him), but after 2017 I don’t rlly get the Harry hype… does that make sense? I do think he was a person worth defending to this extent in 2010-2017,, especially 2010-2015. He just radiated loml energy those years- seemed like such a kind radiant human. I’m emotionally attached to all of the during those years even tho I wasn’t there- I can see why this fandom was so huge. I still ship 2010-2015 Larry and I honestly always will- even tho I’ll never know the full story- they just seem so compatible to me during those years. So pure and in love. And sings like ready to run and iicf, through the dark, and happily enforce that for me personally. But I wouldn’t truly know bc I wasn’t here for that. I’ve done my research but I’ve never talked to a veteran.

Do ppl today just Stan him cus he has dimples and beautiful eyes and curls and abs? Or cus of how humble and pure he seemingly once was? Or is it the charisma/music? Cus I don’t think charisma and music alone would make for such hardcore stans. Especially new stans. Cus harrys got the most hardcore stans next to t swift and BTS. The reason I and others Stan/ stanned one dead is cus the fandom feels like home. These boys felt like the most genuine real and sweet thing to ever happen to the industry- and no matter what I could never hate H. But I just don’t get what ppl see these days. Cus IMO nothing abt him feels that homey and connected anymore. His fandom doesn’t feel like a family outside of concerts to me(and in some the concerts ppl still throwing hands and bringing weird ‘fvck me daddy’ or Larry signs so💀that says something). He’s still a great entertainer and impecable on stage but paying 300+ dollars to see someone’s personality and actually b part of the fandom is kinda odd to me. What do you think? People like me have been in the fandom too long, so it’s always good to have a different perspective!

Part of the reason I’m so hard on Harry might be because of what you said— he had so much promise in 1D, could have chosen to be a good person, he shone as a performer and he said so much warm and fuzzy shit, like, “'All five of you should be on the same page and the closest things to each other because around all five of you there are gonna be people that are gonna come and try to snatch you. People are gonna try to break you guys apart. So as long as you five are your best friends, that's the most important.’” Harry had lots of fandom support; he could have tried to bend industry to be SLIGHTLY better to audiences and SLIGHTLY better to future performers. But instead he chose to be one of the usual, “More for me. See you losers later.” That’s Harry’s general attitude toward anyone who can’t help him, really, including his peers. He said a lot of stuff but lives his life in an entirely opposite way: me me me me me.

I used to have a spark of hope that the Harry we see today wasn’t really him; any day now, Harry would show his true colors and be the compassionate, thoughtful person he seemed to be in 1D. But eventually, I realized that this is the real him— adult Harry, the one who values ONLY fame/wealth/connections, that’s the version that won.

(And because of this, I really can’t see any value in Harry’s music. George W. Bush probably is an okay artist, you know? I’m still not going to look at his art. Besides, I think Harry’s music is derivative and stolen.)

So to your other question— why do people like Harry so much? Why are Harries/ Larries so fanatical about him?

Either they like this narcissistic version — and many Harries actually do— or they are horny for him (fics contribute), or they have an imaginary Harry Styles in their heads that they don’t want to give up.

The last point is probably most salient to many fans (new and old). People want to believe in goodness, kindness, magic.

Some people have invested many years in being a fan. Some can’t give up their 1D memories. Many people share fandom friendships that are an integral part of their lives, and these would have to be broken — and it’s too hard. They’d rather pretend that Harry Styles is a good person than give up this part of their lives. Harry fills an emotional space, whether or not he’s actually good.

It’s delusional fantasy-making on a massive, collective scale, and the amount of money involved is staggering. I mean, the word “cult” isn’t far-fetched. People in a cult are to be studied, but also to be pitied. No matter how much they crave approval, the cult leader really doesn’t see them as individuals, only as pawns— sources of power and money. That’s how I see it. I’m sorry you had to spend money on Harry, but at least you realized.

Now a question for you. Why did you choose Louis? You could have chosen Zayn or Niall or just walked away from the fandom.

Really, there are so many models who have talent, great campaigns, print work, walk and sweet personalities and maybe they don’t have such a huge following but their content is more interesting but people are praising girl who is spending 1/4 of her year getting plastic surgery. I agree that she looks hot at some of her insta photos or pap photos with Abel but her model work is not good at all.

We’re not praising Bella for her modelling skills or her style (which we all agree peaked years ago). We’ve been discussing her appeal to the Gen-Z demo and how that has effectively raised her profile as well as broadened her marketing opportunities. She’s not just as a model - she’s a celebrity and a personality with her own brand at this point. She’s big on social media and she’s got big influence over a certain demo that a lot of brands/companies/other celebs are trying to tap into and hence why she gets brought up. We all collectively agree on this blog that there are much better models out there (better personality, better style, better walk, better editorials) who are more deserving of the top spot in the industry, but being a great model unfortunately doesn’t mean a bigger name these days.

Not a swiftie here, just a casual listener from time to time, but lmao I had to check who dove Cameron was. No offense to her. But I don’t need to check who Taylor swift on the other end. I can safely say that I now have 0 interest in even listening to her stuff (she has a music career? I only recognized Descendants in her career) if she cares more about pinning herself against another female artist on bs grounds

I knew her from disney channel / the descendants as well and I just think she is soo pretty like if it were someone I wish I looked like it would be her (and taylor and billie ofc) but she photoshops her instagram pictures so much to the point where she doesn't even look like herself so to see that tweet where she was like 'omg i love myself i work so hard to love myself' etc just gave me khloe kardashian vibes when she partnered with that diet company and then said it was how she got her body like no, that's not the truth, you spent money on your body with procedures and don't get me wrong plastic surgery is FINE it just bothers the shit out of me when these celebs GET plastic surgery then say that they look the way they do just because of makeup or dieting or whatever because it's a lie and it hurts peoples self image around the world!

She loves going to the markets tho. She always seems to leave with something & either finds herself not liking it months later and ends up selling whatever item caught her interest

Her family tends to pop in whenever they want, especially her mother

Cannot cook no matter how hard she tries. She’s been to cooking classes with an ex, watched videos, order from those food delivery sites to prepare food & it just never turns out well

Will spend hours in furniture stores, she’s had to be escorted out pass closing hours by security guards before & manage to make friends out of them. They all know who she is in majority of the stores she enters

Throws a party every time her following goes up. There’s never not a reason to throw one

Was upset that Carl unfollowed her once and figured Hannah made him do it. Which wasn’t true, Hannah was sure of herself now & doesn’t feel the need to be jealous, the man could follow whoever he wanted—she knew he barely stayed on IG in the first place. He thought it was too shallow

So when Chelsea called him one night sobbing he was utterly confused, he didn’t understand why a follow meant so much

He reluctantly followed her back
