25th January marks the annual celebration of Burns Night - a time to celebrate Scotland's favourite son, and world renowned poet and song writer Robert Burns who was born on this day 1759.
I have covered Oor Rabbie on may occasions so on this day I hope to bring you a few facts about Scotland's National Bard and his legacy.
Known as somewhat of a ladies man, Burns is known to have fathered 12 or 13 children, depending on the source, to 4 different women. His last born child, Maxwell, was born on the same day as his funeral 25 July 1796, meaning his wife Jean Armour missed his send off.
As a lad growing up in Ayrshire, Burns was always fond of supernatural stories, most of which were told to him by an old widow who helped out on his father's farm. These stories no doubt had an influence on his writings in the future and perhaps were the inspiration for his classic masterpiece, Tam O'Shanter and the lesser known Adress to the Deil and Halloween. Even in these poems he flattered the fairer sex with his words, this from the latter poem.....
The lasses feat, an' cleanly neat, Mair braw than when they're fine; Their faces blythe, fu' sweetly kythe, Hearts leal, an' warm, an' kin':
Of course Burns also gives another of his favourite subjects a mention in this verse, "the deil himsel," Look it up it's another guid yin!
Burns didn't always want to stay in Scotland - he hoped to move to the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Although following the success of his poetry collection 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect' (or the Kilmarnock Edition as it is known), he opted to move closer to home, settling in Edinburgh for a time.
For all his fame, Burns never forgot his humble roots. His love for farming stayed with him throughout his life and his writing often dealt with issues affecting the poorer classes, notably highlighting the need for greater social equality. Indeed he is known as the Ploughman Poet, a nod to his farming life.
And on his legacy, Burns has gathered some very famous fans since his passing, US president Abraham Lincoln could recite Burns’ works by heart. Bob Dylan says that ‘A Red, Red Rose’ by Burns is his source of greatest creative inspiration and Michael Jackson song Thriller is said to have been inspired by Tam O'Shanter.
In Japan at pedestrian crossing you don't get beeps like here in Scotland, they play a rendition of the Burns song ‘Coming Through The Rye’.
There are more statues in honour of Rabbie than any other male figure in history, only surpassed in total by Queen Victoria. (I am not including religious statues).
In 2005 Robert Burns was the first person ever to feature on a bottle of Coca Cola, about a million were made they currently trade for around £10 and I have one, unopened in my kitchen cupboard.
Arguably Burns most famous song, Auld Lang Syne, has appeared in over 170 Hollywood films including The Apartment, It’s A Wonderful Life and When Harry Met Sally. , but he only rewrote the verse, he sent the poem to the Scots Musical Museum in 1788 indicating that it was an ancient song but that he'd been the first to record it on paper. The phrase 'auld lang syne' roughly translates as 'for old times' sake', and the song is all about preserving old friendships and looking back over the events of the year.
In the US city of Atlanta, there is a life-size imitation of Burns’ first home in Alloway, South Ayrshire, although it doesn't have the famous thatched roof.
In Scotland, there are some 20 official Burns memorials dotted around the country, from Aberdeen to the final resting place of Burns in Dumfries, which commemorate his journey from Ayrshire to “Auld Lang Syne”.
‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’ was translated and adopted as the marching song of the Chinese resistance fighter in the Second World War.
In 2009 STV viewers voted Robert Burns ‘The Great Scot’, beating the likes of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce among others.
There are Burns Clubs scattered across the globe, but the very first one, known as The Mother's Club, was founded in Greenock in 1801. They held the very first Burns Supper on what they thought was his birthday, January 29th 1802, only to discover that his birthday was actually January 25th!
Since then Burns suppers have been held worldwide.
I know some of you out there will toil to understand some of Burns's poetry, don't fear you will find the Best of Robert Burns, translated into the "de'il's tongue" just Click here...
The song Ae Fond Kiss, was one of my mums favourites the words "Never met-or never parted, We had ne'er been broken-hearted" are inscribed on her grave......"

ENTROP-Y’S CRIMINAL MINDS FIC REC MASTERLIST
if you are the author of one of these incredible fics and want it removed from this list, just dm me!!
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ⋆✦⋆ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
winter in america by mutantmouse
a beautiful and unique character study of reid following emily’s death, but referencing things that happen in canon until that point. one of the best characterizations of reid, and of gideon that i’ve seen. please please please read this!!! cw: referenced suicide (no major character death), referenced past drug use
maps by hopeintheashes
set in season 13, reid is sick and jj (not jeid!) is trying her best to not let him fall apart during an incredibly difficult case. this is part of a fantastic 3 part series, and i recommend the entire thing, but this is my favorite segment. no content warnings outside of cm typical violence.
what if i never love again by someforeignband
one of my absolute favorite characterizations of reid. this functions as both a character study of reid in season 11 through the lens of unrequited love, and is wonderfully angsty. cw: drinking, referenced past drug use
between us by hellskitchenmurdock
reid’s time in prison and the toll it takes on the team told through text messages between garcia and morgan. i’m not usually a fan of text fics, but this is so subtle yet evocative and moving. cw: brief implied suicide
an excuse to get hurt by innerslytherin
reid’s is struggling after he’s kidnapped by tobias hankel, and morgan gets a front row seat to this when he sees spencer at a club. this captures spencer’s anger and bitterness, but also his hurt and fear in such an organic and genuine way. cw: drug use, sex
meals on wheels by ethelindi(eventide)
reid’s take on the toll his neuroses have on him, while trying to reconcile those aspects of his personality. short character study. though reid is autistic, i think this fic feels very accurate to how he would understand himself if he didn’t have/use that label. no content warnings.
some assembly required by deantherighteousman
this is a series where reid helps out with taking care of hank after morgan leaves the bau. one of my favorite characterizations of reid; i think it captures his flaws and how he processes emotions, especially considering the season. ***unfinished*** cw: discussions of sex and masturbation, panic attacks, mentions of depression, unhealthy relationships
touch therapy by @foggyblues-ralvez
id be shocked if anyone hadn’t read this yet, but it is the perfect balance of fluffy and angsty ralvez fic. cws: ptsd, panic attacks, cm typical violence
one for sorrow by butterbeerandbutterknives
this is set directly after emily’s death, and follows the teams grief, specifically spencer’s struggle with an eating disorder. this fic is heavy and can be a difficult read at times, but it’s beautifully written. major cw for eating disorders, discussions of weight and food. additional cw: implied alcoholism, referenced drug use, suicidal ideation
i will stay by @samuel-de-champagne-problems
beautifully captured spencer’s grief after gideons death in a way that feels raw and authentic, complete with much needed hurt/comfort. cw: referenced major character death
sleep in quiet comfort by thesunsethour
so so soft and captures such a sweet moment between reid and garcia in season 13. their friendship is everything and this is so wholesome and warm. cw: ptsd
no better version of me i could pretend to be tonight by canon
14x09 post ep where the case about drug addicts reminds emily of reid, and they have a much needed discussion about his own experience with addiction. so soft and emotional, such an underrated friendship. cw: drug use
some things cosmic by dynazty
soft hurt/comfort where reid goes to morgan after having a nightmare. includes poetry and the wholesome moment we need after this depressing ass rec list. i honestly recommend all of this authors cm stuff on ao3!! no content warnings
tranquillement by @spencerreidat3am
reader insert about spencer’s first night home from prison. heartbreaking and smutty, a general emotional roller coaster but a fantastic read nevertheless. i think it’s easy to get post-prison reid wrong, but this fic got it so right. cw: ptsd, sex
take my hand by @hogwartstoalexandria
set during 11x21, very needed scene between hotch and reid after reid’s interaction with antonia slade, taking into account his issues with germs and neurodivergence. i think some portrayals of reid as blatantly autistic (as opposed to a more implied approach) can infantilize him but i think this is incredibly well done. hurt/comfort. cw: germaphobia, panic attack/meltdown, self harm (as part of meltdown)
part of the job by ssascropsik
post episode 5x10, emily’s reaction/how she copes with what she had to do to make headway with carl arnold. cw: self loathing, drinking to cope
minimal loss by thesacrificalpancake
post episode 4x03 minimal loss, detailing how everyone on the team reacts but focusing on emily and how she handles trauma. this episode is one of my favorites but i think people often mischaracterize emily (and reid, honestly), but this feels so true to her character (even if it’s hotchniss and i am a firm lesbian emily truther). cw: cm typical violence
how to disappear by illustratedangel
reader insert hurt/comfort that shows reid struggling after prison, and slowly starting to recover. this is so tender and gentle. cw: ptsd, sex
hope by unmitigatedsuperiority
penelope character study following episode 9x12 through a conversation between her and spencer. their friendship is so absolutely sweet and loving and this fic depicts that perfectly, while making penelope feel real, dimensional, and solid as a character. cw: grief
winter of our discontent by kittyloft
reid and elle reunite after a decade. this conveys feelings of such immense pain and guilt, as well as deep awkwardness in the absolute best and most nuanced way possible. cw: grief, implied alcoholism
every face along the boulevard by radiboyn
short and angsty ralvez fic set sometime after reid gets out of prison, demonstrating the effects of his ptsd. hurt/comfort. luke alvez deserves the world, actually. cw: ptsd, panic attacks
i got 99 problems by sperrywink
a moreid fic set in season 2 that explores how each character individually copes with the trauma they endured that season, and how it impacts their relationship. cw: drug use, csa/molestation
a little extra by @softdoctorreid
fluffy reader insert post-prison reid fic where reid’s feeling insecure about his weight gain and reader helps him out. another author where i highly recommend everything they’ve written!! cw: explicit sex, body image issues
had me at goodbye by wreckmyplans
reid is struggling to cope with the death of maeve and calls her old number, little did he know it was someone else’s number now. slow burn, reader insert. ***unfinished*** cw: grief, depression, drug use, implied alcoholism, self harm, body image issues
the biggest enemy by fabfemmeboy
post-prison reid going to jj’s house for comfort, just like old times. not jeid. this is really evocative and i think the authors deep understand of and familiarity with canon really helps this feel authentic. cw: ptsd, bullying, referenced character death
22 - “strings” by @cyn-00
moreid fic set during 5x10. the characterization of both reid and morgan is spot on, and this is so soft. i also so so appreciate how this includes reid’s knee injury! so many fics set in season 5 forgo mentioning it altogether and have reid doing things that he would not be able to. cw: references to the events of 5x09
as he loves you (author unknown)
moreid fic again, basically an in depth character study of both from the others perspective. there is not enough good and accurate characterization of morgan and this does it so so well. even if you don’t ship moreid at all, worth the read for that alone. cw: racism, homophobia, referenced csa/molestation, referenced bullying
relief in regrets by @imagining-in-the-margins
reader insert angsty smut set during early season 12. i truly do not see people write about pre prison season 12 reid enough, and this is so so good. cw: sex
the mirror man by blythechild
another fic about angsty early season 12 reid, but this time it’s from emily’s perspective as she tries to navigate her romantic feelings towards him while he falls apart. this diverges from canon and he doesn’t go to prison. honestly, as someone who thinks emily and reid are both gay, this spemily fic is one of the best cm fics i’ve ever read. once again everything by this author is incredible, but this fic in particular is dark and emotional and great. cw: minor character death, grief, depression, drug use, alcoholism, sex, suicidal ideation
angels by dilaudiddreams
the most poetic, beautifully written reid whump i’ve read thus far. reid struggles with his addiction but it gets much, much darker. the characterization of reid is heartbreaking and compelling, and morgan is spot on as well. ***unfinished*** major cw for drug use and addiction, torture, and violence. additional cw for referenced incest, csa, and child abuse.
casimir pulaski day by highway58
this fic diverges from canon and follows reid as he struggles with cancer. this is so detailed and the writing is so heartbreaking and powerful, this fic has made me emotional multiple times. it is a very heavy read, but i cannot recommend it enough. ***ongoing*** cw: cancer, hospitals, graphic medical stuff, depression, drug addiction
missing pieces of sleep by highway58, masterworlds
obviously i don’t read much hotchreid, but this fic is too good not to include. follows reid after he gets out of prison and hotch as get gets out of witness protection, as they come together again. ***ongoing*** cw: ptsd, illness, vomiting, panic attacks, brief referenced suicide
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ⋆✦⋆ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
and that concludes this (very long) list for now!! if anyone knows the tumblr of anyone i didn’t tag, let me know so i can tag them. i’ll probably make shorter fic rec lists every couple of months so as to make this less daunting for anyone who might see it but if you’re reading this, i appreciate you sticking around and hope you check out some of these wonderful authors/fics <3

An American Voice
Since the events of 2020, we have attempted to be more active and reach out to LSU Shreveport campus. This action of outreach is meant to help student, faculty, and campus personnel be aware of a rare and unique resource that is available to them, and any visiting persons to the campus. We have just started our 2024 J.S. Noel Collection Pop-up Exhibits, we aim to highlight a vary small section of the James Smith Noel Collection that might interest various research. This time we focused on one person, Paul Laurence Dunbar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in June in 1872 after the United States’ Civil War, his parents were former slaves. He was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio; and started writing from a young age. He wrote is first poem at the age of 6 and read it aloud at the age of nine for a local church congregation, “An Easter Ode.” Dunbar was 16 when he published two poems in the Dayton’s newspaper The Herald; “Our Martyred Soldiers” and “On the River” in 1888. A few years later he would write and edit Dayton’s first weekly African-American newspaper, The Tattler. Paul L. Dunbar worked with two brothers that were his high-school acquaintances to print the paper that lasted six weeks. Those brothers were Wilbur and Orville Wright, the fathers of American aviation. Dunbar was the only African-American student at Central High School in Dayton.
Tumblr media
Dunbar’s parents had been slaves in Kentucky, following the emancipation, his mother moved to Ohio, and his father escaped before the Civil War ended. Joshua Dunbar went to Massachusetts and volunteered with the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. His parents, Matilda and Joshua, were married on Christmas Eve and Paul L. Dunbar arrived six months later. His parents had a troubled union, they separated after the birth on Paul’s sister; but his father would pass away in August in 1885 when Paul was only 13 years old. His mother played a key role in his education, she hoped her son would become a minister. He was elected president of his high school’s literary society which lead to him to become editor of the school newspaper and debate club member.
Paul Laurence Dunbar finished school in 1891 and took a job as an elevator operator to earn money for college where he hoped to study law. Dunbar had continued to write and soon a collection of poems he wanted to publish. He revisited the Wright brothers, but they no longer had a printing faculty and lead his to the United Brethren Publishing House in 1893. Oak and Ivy was soon published and he busied himself selling copies as he operated the elevator. The book contained two sections, Oak with its traditional verse; and Ivy was written in dialect.
Tumblr media
His literary talents were recognized and Attorney Charles A. Thatcher offered to pay for college; however, his interest in law had shift to his writing. Dunbar had been encouraged by the sell of his poetry, and Thatcher helped by arranging for Dunbar to do readings in a nearby city. Psychiatrist Henry A. Tobey also took an interest and assisted in distributing Dunbar’s first book. The two contained to support Dunbar through the publication of his second collection of verse, Major and Minors, in 1896. While he was consistent at publishing, he was a reckless spender resulting in debt. He was a traditional struggling artist as he tried to support himself and his mother.
There was hope in the summer of 1896 when his second book received a positive review in Harper’s Weekly, William Dean Howells brought national attention to his poems; calling them “honest thinking and true feeling” and praising his dialectic poems. There was a growing appreciation for folk culture and black dialect. His popular works were written in the “Negro dialect” that is commonly associated with the antebellum South; though he also wrote in the Midwestern dialect that he grew-up hearing. Dunbar would write in various styles, including conversational English in poetry and novels. He is considered to be the first important African American sonnet writer. His use of the “Black dialect” in writing has been criticized as pan-handling to readers.
Dunbar was a diverse writer, he experimented with poetry, short stories, novels, plays, and a musical. He even ventured beyond the lens of the lives of African Americans and attempted to explore the struggles of a white minister. The Uncalled, Dunbar’s first novel, held similar names and themes of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and was not well favored. It was with his venture into novel writing that he dared to cross the “color line” with his first novel which focused solely on white society. He continued to try to capture white culture but the critics found them lacking.
He moved past novel writing and began to work with two composers, Dunbar wrote the lyrics for the first musical that would be preformed by an all African-American cast on Broadway; In Dahomey. Beyond his writing career, Dunbar was also active the early civil rights movements happening in 1897. He married after a trip to the United Kingdom in 1898, Alice Ruth Moore was also a poet and teacher from New Orleans. She also published a collection of short stories, and they wrote companion poems together. There was a play in 2001 based on their relationship.
Tumblr media
Dunbar had taken a traditional job with the Library of Congress in D.C. and with his wife in tow they moved there. However, with his wife’s urging, he left his job to focus on his writings and his public readings. This also allowed him to attend Howard University for a time. However, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1900 and his doctors suggested that drinking whisky would alleviate the symptoms. They also moved to the cold dry mountains of Colorado for his health. This resulted in trouble in Paul and Alice’s marriage, they separated in 1902 but never formally divorced.
Dunbar returned to his hometown of Dayton, Ohio in 1904 to be with his mother, his health continued to decline and depression consumed his mind. Paul Laurence Dunbar died from tuberculosis at age 33 on February 9, 1906 and was interred in Dayton.
Dunbar did not become one of the forgotten poets of literature, his use of dialect in his poetry allowed for his works to remain relevant and important in poetic criticism. We of the James Smith Noel Collection at LSU Shreveport are proud to retain and maintain a small collection of his works and show case their importance.

13 Books Tag Game
Was tagged by @disregardandfelicity Thank you! This is really getting me back into the spirit of reading. I needed this <3
1) The last book I read:
Coma by Alex Garland. I love him as a director, and I just recently found out he's also written some books. It was fun and mind-bendy, sort of reminded me of the stuff I try to write. Also really fast. I think I finished it in one or two hours.
2) A book I recommend:
Moving Forward Sideways Like a Crab by Shani Mootoo. I recently formed a little book club around this book because I just think it's so special. And almost no one has heard of it, which is such a shame! Everything this author writes is just stunning. Heartbreaking, guttural, sometimes disturbing, but always always stunning.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
Pillars of Light by Jane Johnson. Became one of my all-time favourites almost immediately, and I plowed right through it. I've been itching to read it again, actually. Oh, John the sad gay foundling, I miss reading from your pov...
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
For some reason I've read Room by Emma Donoghue twice. I wouldn't be able to stomach it now, but I guess it did something for me at the time. If anything, it's a fast read once you get used to the five year old's voice.
5) A book on my TBR:
So, soooo many... After the book I'm currently reading, I was hoping to pick up White Noise by Don DeLillo or Foe by Iain Reid.
6) A book I’ve put down:
Cloud Atlas, for now. Just sort of fell out of it by accident.
7) A book on my wish list:
And Then She Fell by Alicia Elliott. I've read her other book, A Mind Spread Out on the Ground, and I genuinely think it's one of those must-reads for any Canadian (or non-Canadian) interested in Indigenous lit.
8) A favorite book from childhood:
I was partial to The Spiderwick Chronicles. In earlier childhood, though, it was The BFG by Roald Dahl.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
The Solitude of Prime Numbers by Paolo Giordano. I know what you're thinking --- kind of a depressing book to give to a friend. And yes, it is depressing and very rough. But it opened something in my heart, idk. I felt comforted by it. I would also give a friend The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan. Basically, books that have made me cry and hug them after I finished them.
10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own
Can't remember the titles off the top of my head, but I have some Neruda. My partner is the poetry reader.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Oh, sooooo many. I used to only read non-fiction for the longest time. But I'll go with the one that makes me look the most pretentious: Gender Trouble by Judith Butler. Found in the special little book sale room at the library I work at.
12) What are you currently reading:
The Kite Runner, for the first time. It's as gorgeous and heartbreaking as promised.
13) What are you planning on reading next?
Essex Dogs by Dan Jones. I bought a copy last year, got a few chapters in, then gave it to my dad for Christmas because we're big Dan Jones fans and I couldn't find another copy anywhere. I waited months for my new copy, so I have to read it now!
Hmm, tagging @spacegirlsgang @raedear @captainshakespear @maddielle @polarcell @knoepfchen but no pressure ofc

It is currently 4am in the morning, I can't sleep, so let's do this now. (Pretty sure I've done it before but this is simply going be the updated version🤪)
15 questions + 15 friends; I was tagged by @spezialgelagerte-rokokokokotte thanking youuu <3
It got quite long, so I'll put a cut here😅
1. Are you named after anyone?
No😊 (and I say this confidently because I named myself)
2. When was the last time you cried?
Two days ago, on my birthday (I was just a little emotional), but @maxwellshimbo was there to comfort me💚
3. Do you have kids?
Not of my own, no. And it's unlikely that is ever going to happen.
4. What sports do you play/have you played?
I did ballet as a kid but quickly got tired of it and started playing football, which I technically STILL play (it's been 84 14 years💀) but I am falling out of love with it. I used to do archery for like a year which I absolutely loved and hope to do again sometime! I'm in a club for lifeguarding (German peeps will probably have heard of DLRG👀) so I spent quite some time at the swimming pool as well. Though I am not as active in actual training anymore. And I did ballroom dancing for a while. Like standard and latin dances. My favourite was probably Cha Cha Cha and my least favourite was definitely Quickstep😵‍💫 it was fun tho! I danced with one of my best friends and I did the leading parts which made me feel kind of gender euphoric. I also like to go for a run every now and then but overall I'd consider myself a not so sporty person. I like to relax a lot🥴
5. Do you use sarcasm?
I cannot live without. It just comes naturally.
6. What is the first thing you notice about people?
Just the overall vibe I guess. And whether I like them or not.
7. What is your eye colour?
It says blue-grey on my ID but I've been told they're actually more green-ish and I kind of agree.
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings. I don't like scary movies, I think they're ridiculous.
9. Any talents?
Hm. Well...my dad jokes are pretty good🤪 but apart from that...I guess I'm quite creative?🤷🏻 I speak 3 languages fluently? I can touch my tongue to my nose? Idk xD
10. Where were you born?
In some small town in northern Germany. Fellow Germans will probably know it for one (1) big tourist attraction but I'm not going to specify it here.
11. What are your hobbies?
I play theater. I play several musical instruments (bass, flute, ukulele, kalimba and some more but I'm not as good). I like taking pictures and editing them. Sometimes I write fanfic and/or poetry. And I like to relax in my bean bag🥴
12. Do you have any pets?
I have a cat but I haven't lived with her in 3 years. (Due to an allergy🤧 and me moving out of my parents' house.) I visit her from time to time tho!
13. How tall are you?
It used to be 1,68m on my ID but I recently had to renew it and now it says I'm 1,71m...I think I might actually be smaller than that though🥴
14. Favourite subject in school?
Always all the languages. Never any of the sciences. I loved music class as well. And all the school bands I played in. I miss that.
15. Dream job?
Please, that is the WORST question you could ask me right now😩 I feel a little lost. I'm currently studying to be a translator but is it what I really want? I don't know ;-; I miss working at the kindergarten lately. But I don't know if I'd wanna do that full time either. I'm so insecure and I hope I'll figure it out soon.
Phew. This took me almost an hour. Well. Let's see if I can fall asleep now. 1½ hours left until my alarm goes off. Good night😴
No pressure tags: @daughterofhecata @miaisreadytorun @bistdueinbaum

for the book recs ask game!
tauria i love you. thank you for the asks!!! (the problem with this ask list is that it asks for my favorites, and some books fill way more than one slot so i'm trying to limit how many times i repeat hahaha)
3) a stand-alone that you wish was part of a series: answered here!
10) a book that got you through something: gonna be completely honest, ao3 is what i turn to to get me through things 😭
13) your favorite romance novel: Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston. i LOVE this book, and i definitely have way too many copies of it 🫣
28) a book you wish you could read as a beginner again: Vicious by V.E. Schwab. this book, man
34) a book featuring the enemies to lovers trope: okay, i feel like i'm gonna be judged for this one but i am not ashamed about how much i love this book. Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid
35) a book featuring the found family trope: Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
43) a book that you have read more than three times: i just did a reread of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan for book club and realized during a meetup where i forgot my book that i can literally recite exact quotes off memory alone. i've read and reread that series SO much across my life so far, and i will continue to do so
69) your favourite mythological retelling: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. i've loved that book for almost a decade now <3
71) your favourite LGBTQ+ fiction: i want to say RWRB but i've already said it in this list so. MDZS, aka The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, by MXTX. i haven't read the entirety of the official english translation yet, but i read the fan translation almost four years ago now and i love that book
86) a book with an insane plot twist: The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey. INCREDIBLE book
129) a book with beautiful prose: this one's kind of cheating since it's a poetry book, but Harmony by Whitney Hanson
131) recommend any book you like! okay, if you are open to queer hockey smut i LOVE the Game Changers series by Rachel Reid
book recs ask game!

Shimabara (part 2)
Continued from part 1
Tumblr media
I don't know what this drawer is. Logically, I'd use it for keys, because it's near the exit. But who knows what's really in there?
Tumblr media
View from the kitchen to the inside of the "business" area. A staircase leads to the second floor, where there are living rooms for the owners and servants.
Tumblr media
A small Shinto altar on the wall near the stairs.
Tumblr media
An office for vendor payments and bookkeeping. The owner's seat of power.
Tumblr media
Right above the desk on the wall is an arsenal for when negotiations go wrong. Or for escorting uninvited guests out.
Tumblr media
The entrance to the guest room is clearly visible from the business area. This thing near the entrance is a katana rack. The guests who came in used to put their swords in here. Maybe even get room numbers. And to the left, behind closed doors, is the staircase to the second floor, where there are also guest rooms, but smaller in size. Unfortunately, I didn't get in. They go there only on scheduled tours and under the supervision of a guide. It's not allowed to take photos there: some of the decorations of the rooms were made by famous artists and craftsmen and are National Treasures of Japan. Such a palace.
Tumblr media
One of the first floor guest rooms. Here the guests dined in a pleasant relaxing atmosphere, talking about life and business. Or poetry.
Sumiya was founded in 1641, the same year as Shimabara itself. The Nakagawa family owned the place for 13 generations until the building was taken over by the state in 1952. The interiors were decorated by some of the most famous artists of the Edo period, including Yosa Buson, Maruyama Okyo, Kishi Ganku, Yamada Gazan, and Emura Shoen.
Tumblr media
The same room from another corner overlooking a small courtyard garden.
In the 18th century, Sumiya was the regular gathering place of the haiku poets' club, the so-called "Shimabara Haidan". The 6th and 7th owners of Sumiya were friends with Buson and Taigi (a haiku poet). The establishment's archives contain poems written by these buddies during these creative dinners.
Tumblr media
One of the indoor gardens. It was the middle of March, so everything was so bare and cold. I became cold pretty quickly myself, by the way. As you can see, everything is wide open. And the temperature in the place is the same as the ambient temperature. Ten degrees. And you only wear socks on the tatami.
Tumblr media
A passageway to the back of the house, towards the most luxurious and largest of the guest rooms.
Tumblr media
There it is. On the opposite side are the painted fusuma by Kishi Renzan.
Tumblr media
The room opens to a large courtyard garden.
Tumblr media
In the foreground is a wisteria. In the garden, three separate tea houses are hidden in different corners. One of them is clearly visible on the right.
Tumblr media
Ranma - carved wooden panels under the ceiling.
Tumblr media
Tokonoma, front corner. Where one hangs scrolls appropriate to the season and/or situation and places all sorts of beautiful things, from seasonal flowers to small sculptures by famous artists.
Tumblr media
Fine and luxurious finishing of all details.
Tumblr media
A continuation of the same wall.
Tumblr media
"Tenbukuro" - cabinets below the ceiling. Notice how the "handles" are decorated.
Tumblr media
"Phoenixes and paulownia" painting. Kishi Renzan, late 18th century.
Tumblr media
A corner of the garden. Other buildings of the Sumiya can be seen.
Tumblr media
Tour guide tells an anecdote from the Bakumatsu. In June 1863, the then-formal head of the Shinsengumi unit, Serizawa Kamo, got drunk and went on a rampage in one of the rooms on the second floor. The drunken samurai refused to pay his bill and, after picking on some petty detail, began smashing the furniture in the room with his sword. The tokonoma of the affected room still has notches from the sword. And in September of the same year, on this very spot, where the guide stands, Serizawa Kamo sat with his friends, and Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, who organized a party for their already condemned former commander, were trying to get him drunk. this was Serizawa's final night.
Around the same time period, Sakamoto Ryoma and Saigo Takamori entertained wealthy merchants in Sumi-ya, trying to persuade them to shell out money to restore the Emperor.
The Sumiya has always been known for its neutral political leanings. You could meet anyone here.
Tumblr media
Interesting screen door clips.
Tumblr media
A phoenix head on a painted fusuma.
Tumblr media
And fusuma handles shaped like paulownia leaves.
Tumblr media
From this room, a small bridge leads to another part of the house, more private if the case is particularly secret or if the guest has achieved privacy with the tayu.
Tumblr media
The path to the tea house. To enjoy a tea ceremony with geisha or tayu in peace and quiet.
Tumblr media
View of the second floor from the small courtyard garden. Nothing interesting, a blank wall.
Tumblr media
A lantern in the same garden.
Tumblr media
Shimabara Daimon from the inside. I've finally walked around and I'm crawling home.
