#poe party blooper reel
Text
The problem with rewatching Poe Party is that the damn blooper reel is so iconic that there are certain moments I can't watch (Oscar's gasps upon HG suggesting he might be the next intended victim, basically half of Lauren's stuff) without picturing the blooped version in my head.

Wanted to try my hand at one of those (joking) dni if lists but shipwrecked related sooo
dni if: you've only watched the blooper reels once, you think that emily dickinson was a human, you've never looked at any of the transmedia stuff from kitr, your favourite character in little vvomen is laurie, you've never played one of shipwrecked's songs on loop, you don't support corn sarah, you aren't super attached to at least one (1) shipwrecked character, you have a favourite shipwrecked pet, you've never had to explain the dynamics of the core four to someone, you think vivian killed fitzgerlad, you've never caught a shipwrecked live premire, you don't have post notifications on for shipwrecked, you guessed the ending of headless, you didn't cry after [REDACTED]'s death in poe party, you've never watched a tell tale vlog, and you don't have at least two (2) shipwrecked quotes that live rent free in your mind

watching the blooper reel for Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party and seeing Joey in full Hemingway get-up sawing at rope with a kitchen knife saying, suggestively, “you ever been with a guy who had four knives?” is too much. It’s too much. I can’t handle it.

Not exactly Richpez, but Lauren in the Edgar Allan Poe Murder Mystery Dinner Party blooper reel is so adorable! Her little giggle when she first breaks in a bunch of clips is so cute!!
I’ve watched that video So Many Times because she absolutely cannot keep it together and her laugh is one of my favourite sounds in the world and I love that it’s like 70% just her breaking

The biggest takeaway from the Poe Party blooper reel is never to put Tom and Blake (or to a lesser degree Joey and Lauren) next to each other in a scene...

I'm bored and a nerd so I'm sorting all the events in the Poe Party outtakes. Because I made a joke about the contents of the blooper reel and now I need to analyze it. So by "improv" I mean a line delivered in character that didn't end up in the final shoot. So, for example, Ryan Garcia's lines about the barbershop quartet didn't count but his lines about the baby and the cat did. Blake Silver's goofs with the cameras didn't count because they weren't lines, just physical comedy (which I will tally eventually) and Jim O'Heir's crudeness wasn't counted because it was out of character. So there were approximately 135 lines of dialogue that were improvised on the reel. Sean had the most, at 38 lines, followed by Tom at 22, Sinead at 18, and Joey at 12. Lauren and Mary Kate were tied at 9, Ryan and Ashley were tied at 7, Jim O'Heir had five, Laura Spencer had four, Blake and Jimmy had three, and Tara had one line. Tl;Dr Sean Persaud is an amazing improv actor and I am a data nerd who likes Poe Party a little too much.

It’s so hot the camera keeps over-heating. We’re on a crunch to kill this additional scene for BOYS ABOUT TOWN - me and Gabe both gotta get to our respective jobs. We’re shooting at Steve’s and he volunteers to run sound, cracking, “But only if I get to add it to my IMDb credits.” He says he misses assisting me on set, which is how we initially bonded.
Sofia Beeson is now part of the BOYS cast and she’s got one of the larger roles in IBA (I get a kick out of spotting recurring actors in a director’s filmography; part of my nerdy love for movies). Sofi’s character is loosely based off my friend Melissa Poe. Actually, yeaaars ago, when I wrote this BOYS segment, I wanted Melissa, who’s not an actor, to play the part ‘cause she’d essentially be playing herself. That was during my cast all my friends on OBLIVION days.
The blooper reel is gonna be a gold mine. Sofi is cracking everyone up. And sometimes I’m at a point where I nearly ruin a take because I’m trying hard not to laugh. Can’t think of a better way to wrap BOYS (for now).
The past few months (including reshoots) have given Joaquin and Cole time to really get into their characters. They’re nailing it. Fun fact: Joaquin who plays Bobby is from Jersey (more intense). And Cole who plays Calvin is from California (more laid-back). And it’s an awesome pairing. Because they both have a distinct style due to their regional upbringing. One of my better casting choices; it’s made waiting almost a decade to tackle this project worth it.
I have some flashback scenes to shoot with them for a way later installment and I gotta do it soon because these guys are aging fast (“Stop partying so much!”). Problem is… that’s going to take a week and I have IBA to worry about - I need to shoot the opening montage during Echo Park Rising later this month (Jesus, it’s been a year since we did that pitch video) and I’m also nabbing footage in Oakland mid-September - while trying to sneak in DITCH, the sequel to BY THE WAYSIDE before year’s end. Because if I don’t set deadlines I’ll never get shit done. Blah.
I do have an idea... I rewatched PERSONA a few weeks ago and ANOTHER SIDE OF HOPE (Kaurismäki’s latest offering). Both have these amazing-amazing scenes (PERSONA’s is infamous) where the camera is gently placed in front of a character telling a story. Both movies refuse to depict the story… but the lighting and acting and dialogue is so good that you’re completely hypnotized and you swear that the filmmakers showed you what happened. They trust you as an audience and your imagination to visualize the story. I’m considering doing that, which would relieve me of some scheduling stress, but I don’t think I’m a good enough filmmaker to pull it off. Then again? You have to consistently push yourself or you’ll never grow. And right now? I seriously don’t feel I’m challenging myself on BOYS ABOUT TOWN, like at all, or experimenting enough…
But is that boring for other people? What do I know? One of my favorite movies’ opening scenes just shows the back of two characters’ heads at a diner while they’re breaking up. That’s MY idea of entertainment. And the way these flashbacks are written right now, they’re a little too close to what I already did in JERRY, where JERRY takes the audience through one of his yarns, addressing the camera.
“Tiiiiime for decisions to be maaaade,” as Paul Westerberg sings.
Bit about BOYS… this whole movie is made up of shorts documenting the kids within the next five years; not unlike BOYHOOD or the SEVEN UP! series but also unlike them because I’m more interested in capturing friendship dynamics... how much a friendship changes from your cusp of early-twenties forward. It’s not a gimmick. I think back to all the people that colored my life when I first started coming up to LA from the OC and how the majority of them I don’t even keep in touch with. And I’m saying… these are people that I saw everyday… that let me sleep on their couch when I had no place to go, laughed with, bonded with, did all my first drugs with (!). And when we have cross paths we don’t really know what to say because we’ve changed so much as people. Perfect strangers. And on the other hand, there are those special ones that fade in and out intensely and whenever we do see each other - no matter the distance in between - it’s like no day has been skipped. That’s what I find appealing. That, but we get to see how Joaquin and Cole’s acting changes throughout the years, and how my approach changes (I don’t really want the segments to have a consistent tone) and how Gabe grows as a first-time cinematographer, including the technology we use.
Should be fun. Even tho I’ve threatened to quit and scrap the project almost every single day since we started filming.
