#poc are valid
Text
I think it is important that Ballister is a poc in the movie. The clear discrimination he faced, both by the system and by the public felt so real. Everything about him being different, about him being a crack in the wall. The fact that he had only one god danm chance that everyone was ready to snatch away from him the second something went wrong. Even the way he got treated diffently by his fellow knights. The fact that despite carving a place out for himself be somehow still didn't belong because they system is made to keep people like him out.
As a fellow poc it actually kinda felt good - I felt validated in a sense.

idk i just feel like the more pressing matter with sokka is the fact he’s been played by a white dude than whether or not he still hates women or whatever. and it’s so weird too because the casting for everyone is pretty spot on at least broadly speaking and then you get to sokka and it’s just (karen smith voice) if you’re from the water tribe, why are you white?
Well, for starters, we don't actually know that he is white.
I'm reluctant to relitigate this at this juncture, since there's been a lot of speculation with very little evidence, and frankly, even if he is white, the cast is still a damn sight more diverse than any installment we've ever had. The original main cast of the show was white--with the exception of Zuko and Iroh--as was the main cast of the movie adaptation (again with the exception of Zuko and Iroh, funnily enough), AND the creators were white AND all of the writers were white (and almost all of them were men), which means that there were approximately zero poc with storytelling authority involved with the show. Even if Ian Ousley is white (which is still an if! and I'm not gonna be out here demanding his 23andme results), that's one flub against an entire cast of Asian&indigenous actors, showrunners, writers, and directors (of which there are also considerably more women than the original could boast).
I'm not willing to throw that baby out with the bathwater, so to speak, and I'm going to err on the side of if the rest of the cast is ok with his presence, then it shouldn't bother me too badly. They have excellent chemistry in interviews and on screen, and, from what I've seen, seem to be friends, and that's good enough for me.
Also, I just want to take this moment to point out that trying to rely on looks to determine who is or isn't a poc is problematic at best--and I think that, without bias, Ian doesn't look out of place next to Kia, Dallas, and Gordon. It's not like he's Jackson Rathbone, guys.

Nothing is funnier than posts being angry about "everyone" always focusing on slash ships and not m/f ships...like
have you left tumblr and spent a minute in the real world? I promise you people will talk about nothing but m/f ships there

okay not to be like that™️ but some of you guys completely lack critical thinking skills and it absolutely shows when you decide to make the evil/villainous characters poc with no reflection on what that actually entails

Seen a few posts about how rude Jade is (and I say this as a person who doesn't love where the nate/jade arc seems to be going), but I want to gently nudge people to look at her from a different take.
She's a bit rude by US standards, yes. She doesn't immediately jump to help or get Nate anything he wants...and some people have read that as her being worse than rude. But this is actually not unusual for Europe in general.
Depending on where you are treatment of customers may be more or less different than the US. France is probably the furthest from US customer service, but it's rare for any businesses in Europe to treat the customer as though they are "always right."
And forcing an employee to continuously act kind and helpful is definitely not common practice. Most employees are helpful and polite, but only if you treat them with respect and dignity. No one can be sweet all the time (not even Ted) so it makes no sense to force an employee to do that, and might even be seen as cruel for a business to require their employee to wear a constant smile.
And thinking about it, it IS pretty messed up that US culture requires employees to wear smiles and be pleasant all the time. We all know it's a facade anyway. We just demand that employees do a song and dance for us so we feel better about our consumerist hellscape. Plus this system just gives customers a sense of entitlement to treat employees any way they want to.
*deep breath, moving on, stepping off my soapbox now I promise*
Basically, Jade isn't "bad" at customer service, she's just bored and probably a bit tired. She gets her job done, but she's also not gonna do a bunch of fanfare or wear big smiles while she does it. She's not going to interrupt Nate, but she's also not really interested in what he's saying. She just wants to do her job and go home. It's the exact same as most restaurant workers in the US, the ONLY difference is she's not required to have a big fake smile on her face while she does it.
Also woman not smiling = heinous villain, is maybe not the hot take you think it is?

ugn I've truly started to loose my patience that one of the queerest shows ever made, featuring 3 out of 4 POC main characters, there is SO MUCH attention given by the fan community-and now even some producers influenced by said community- to the generic white guy asshole side character because he's conventionally attractive.
It's truly insulting we went through so much to get to the point television people could even tell these kind of stories of EXPLICITLY queer and non-white people, and YET so called 'fans' still make it about a generic grumpy white guy cause they're so programmed to seeing white straight presenting gruff protagonists in media they automatically flock to him, and read him with so much depth that is NOT IN THE TEXT, ignoring the utter monumental achievement of the main characters.
I'm sick of this. I'm so tired because it's so painfully obvious who sees this show as something groundbreaking and monumental for representation, and who are just licking the boots of their next white man bad boy while they word vomit all their bad faith readings of the show into the tags, being outraged when others don't feel the same way. Please go find another white boy bad boy there's about another 100 shows with them on right now. I'm so sick of the constant racist HCs or homophobic HCs at this point. At least keep them out of the main tags if that's the only take away you can get from progressive media that you STILL have to make it about your gruff little white man being a victim to POC or openly queer characters.
I'm so over it.
P.S.
This is not me giving ANYONE an excuse or free pass to harass Izzy Stan’s. I don’t believe anyone should be hurt over their character opinions. I am just expressing my general exhaustion with fandom racism and white favoritism which is so blatant when a show is structured like this. But unequivocal harm in retaliation to unintentional micro aggressions does not make a community safer.

Quick notes from a long journal entry I made in December 2016 that shows my autism, before I had any idea I was autistic
Being taken advantage of in friendships
"Getting too attached to people"
"I'm an outsider"
People who are "like me" that I lock on to and don't have to "perform" for them
Alone time = can think about anything A person is present = mind goes blank, can’t  converse
"how are you" (what does it MEAN)
why can't i think of anything to say, ever
or just blurting out about anime theories to work colleagues who have never even seen any series in their life
"the inner flame gets ignited and it's so easy to talk about books"
Need to FEEL a connection before I talk to someone “properly”
"why do customers STOP AND CHAT when they ask where an item is”
If I get interrupted out of listening to music it takes me minutes to focus on the conversation being had. And then more minutes to get back to whatever I was doing
Irritation that is not controllable and goes away only when it is done with you
"how do i not be an outsider"

it's repulsive the amount of criticism ive seen against young or new artists (particularly in the poetry community or in the country music genre) that's just "they're letting anyone call themselves an artist these days. they're not honoring traditions. they're ruining [art form]" & by "tradition" they 100% mean white supremacy, homophobia, ableism, ect. the mindset of "if everyone thinks they're special & worthy, it will dilute the value of art" is soooo often a thinly veiled way of expressing discomfort in seeing diverse voices finally being represented
