I think now is a good time to remind people of The Internet Archive which has a metric shit ton of shows and movies for free and won't give your computer any viruses cause it's not a pirate website.
Or Tubi, which has a metric shit ton of stuff free with ads, and you don't even have to make an account or download the app. Same with Pluto, although Pluto is pretty slow.
Even YouTube has a lot of free stuff, and I don't just mean the official YouTube movie channel. I mean, there's a bunch of channels that upload movies you can watch without having to click a link to some shady website. YouTube also has a lot of audio book uploads too.
So don't worry about not getting brand new shows because there's so much media out there's that you haven't even consumed yet.

Red alert for the Trek fandom! The free Pluto TV service has added a second dedicated Trek channel. The first channel has been there a number of years and normally shows TNG 24x7. Recently, it has started showing TOS in its entirety about once a week. The new channel is currently running DS9.
So if you're looking for a free, legal way to watch Trek, Pluto TV is currently the way to go. Paramount owns Pluto TV and maybe they're finally getting a clue that only catering to those who are willing and able to pay for their streaming service is cutting off too much of the potential audience.

Sitting here watching a 24/7 Power Rangers live channel on Roku and ruminating on the problems we're seeing in the tech industry's strategy of "we'll build it first and worry about the money later"
This Power Rangers channel has had four ad breaks now and across all of them, only a single ad (for the OLED Switch) has ever played. They're thankfully smart enough not to just rerun the same ad over and over every break, but that means a lot of these "ad" breaks are just the above art with a countdown timer and nothing else.
And these kinds of live channels are a big deal right now. It started out with Pluto TV years ago, but now most major streaming platforms have a "Live TV" option with a selection of the same handful of core streaming channels (Unsolved Mysteries, MST3K, pocket.watch, FailArmy, Shout Factory, etc.) plus some unique ones for flavor. Pluto gets a lot of Viacom stuff, Tubi gets a lot of Lionsgate and Fox stuff, the Roku App itself seems to get a little bit of everything, and recently the Plex app launched a live TV guide with some deeply obscure, weird channels (like, so weird the channel guide doesn't even say what the channel is airing; you just have to look and see, and every time I do, it's something I've never even heard of before, like Sleepstalker).
Tumblr media
It's all the benefits of channel surfing on cable like the old days, but without the $60-$100+ bill every month. But now I find myself wondering... how are they making money? How many of these channels are like Power Rangers where they run ad breaks that aren't actually ad breaks at all and are just a placeholder countdown banner? That's dead weight, isn't it?
Like, I'm the kind of person that loves dumpster diving through this stuff. I mentioned Sleepstalker earlier -- that's not a good movie, and I sat through almost all of it just because it was the right kind of weird for the middle of the night.
I just wonder how long we're going to have 200+ free movie/TV streaming channels spread out across 5-6 apps before the whole thing implodes.

How to Watch Elvis Movies for Free! (Legally)
Hello Elvis fans!
If you're anything like me, when you develop a new special interest that slowly but surely begins to consume every waking moment of your life, you try to absorb as much about that topic as possible. Unfortunately, this pursuit of knowledge sometimes come at a price that not everyone can afford. So for those of you wanting to watch some films starring Elvis Presley, there are plenty of free resources at your disposal!
{These resources are available at the time of writing (July 2023)}
Pluto TV:
Pluto has a whole sub-folder dedicated to Elvis films, with about ten that rotate out on a regular basis. The only con is that ad breaks are inevitable. These films include:
G.I. Blues (1960)
Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962)
Fun in Acapulco (1963)
Easy Come, Easy Go (1967)
Clambake (1967)
Frankie and Johnny (1966)
{Other films regularly added include King Creole (1958), Blue Hawaii (1961), Roustabout (1964), and Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966)}
YouTube:
So far, I've managed to find three full-length films for free, including:
Love Me Tender (1956)
Loving You (1957)
Charro! (1969)
The Criterion Channel:
Now there is a catch with this one. While this is a premium streaming service, you can get a 7-day free trial (I can't link the individual movies, so I'll link the site). For July 2023, the platform is offering six films, which are:
Love Me Tender (1956)
Jailhouse Rock (1957)
King Creole (1958)
Blue Hawaii (1961)
Wild in the Country (1961)
Viva Las Vegas (1964)
These are only the ones I know about. If anyone knows of any others, feel free to reblog and add them.
I hope everyone enjoys!

I’m just curious because I feel like streaming services are getting increasingly enshittified, and I’ve cancelled several lately because they’re either bastards (Max), clueless (Netflix), and/or greedy (Disney). I’d like to take the temperature here and see if I’m off base.
