So a fic I’ve had fully outlined and would love to actually write but fully CANNOT because it’s way too meta and is unfortunately a little too on the nose right now involves streamer!Eddie and game dev!Chrissy, who works in an extremely toxic, but highly successful and respected gaming company. (It’s a modern AU obviousleigh)
Eddie’s been hip to the company’s shitty business practices for years and he isn’t shy about calling out her boss, Henry Creel, in particular. They meet at an industry trade show after party when Chrissy runs to him to get away from a conversation she does not want to have (she pulls the old “hi! Pretend you know me to save me from this situation!” move). Eddie immediately thinks she’s going to lay into him for talking so much trash about her work but she actually thanks him for his honesty?? It’s nice! They hit it off right away.
The problem is, it doesn’t look great for a highly recognizable head dev and a streamer with Eddie’s reputation to be seen together, so they have to settle for hooking up in secret. Plus, Chrissy is going to be really, really busy with a new game release just around the corner so she can’t commit to anything too serious. She’ll watch his streams while working overtime in the office and he’ll sneak little affirmations and flirtations her way.
One day she comes in to work to discover one of her coworkers, Fred, has taken indefinite medical leave after being hit with a pretty significant bout of exhaustion, and after watching a fight go down over a minor misunderstanding between a couple interns, she takes a sick day and heads to Eddie’s to come clean about everything she’s been dealing with, confirming his suspicions.
He puts her in contact with investigative journalist Nancy, and she blows the whistle. They work together to build a story about Henry’s abysmal leadership and the way the crunch culture has impacted her and her colleague’s mental health and personal lives.
In the end, Chrissy gets to actually use some of that unlimited PTO she brags to her friends about. Jane, Henry’s quiet but observant assistant, plays a significant role in taking him down.
Like I said, unfortunately I can’t really bring myself to write this anytime soon because of everything Grace has been dealing with wrt the f*ze situation, I think it would hit a little too close to home watching what she’s been going through wrt gaming culture, and the shitty dudes wherein. But I wrote the outline last year, and the structure of the story itself is there and I still really love it.

However, the policy won’t apply to hourly workers or those working outside the U.S. And as we’ve discussed before, the companies that offer these policies tend to benefit more than the workers…who may end up taking less time off.
“People think unlimited paid time off [PTO] is something that should be desired. In reality, people who have an opportunity to take as many vacations as they can will end up taking fewer days off than those with a limited amount of days off in a year. In a nutshell, the unlimited PTO policy is a marketing trick that is supposed to lure people into applying for the job,” Branka Vuleta, founder of LegalJobs.io, told us in 2021.
For places with these policies, Vuleta also says it’s a cost-saving solution — companies aren’t obliged to pay their employees for their unused vacation days. They’re also less liable since they don’t have to track it and abide by the same rules as companies with a limited vacation policy.
Add in guilt, unclear worker expectations and how others in the office will pick up the workload, and suddenly you’re left with a seemingly well-meaning policy that indirectly may lead workers at Microsoft to not only use less vacation but also do some work while they are technically out of office.
That said, it’s still preferable to America’s strangely limited two-week policy, which is why our country has the second-least amount of PTO in the world. As someone who’s been cheated out of limited vacation days in past jobs — either by “losing” them or being guilted out of taking time off — I’ll take the nebulous leave policy any day (or, since I can, multiple days).

Hey everyone, good news finally! I was offered a new job a little bit ago and should be starting Monday! The pay is a little less than what I need but it’s more than what I was making! Plus the benefits are really good like unlimited PTO and great healthcare coverage. Thanks to everyone who sent encouraging messages 💖

I finally got to have that evasive job interview today..
And it went GREAT!
I even asked for a pretty high salary if I were to be hired and they said YES. Ugh. All I could think of was the day I asked my previous boss for a raise and she said "I think you make plenty for what you do." And these people are sitting here like "we'll pay you 12k more than that plus benefits and unlimited PTO."
Like damn even if I were to not get it for some reason at this point, the fact that the VP thought I was worth that much already makes me feel so much better abt being the HECK away from my last job!!!!
Anyway when I told her I was looking to be hired ASAP she clearly didnt want to lose me bc she expedited the interview process!
And now I have 3 hours of interviews tomorrows! A 2 hr one with the founders and 1hr with the team lead.
A part of me is really anxious and another part of me is so dang excited and feeling the confidence boost from earlier!!
So what the heck!! I'll let myself feel both!! 🌻
Let's manifest this babyyyy.
Good job good pay good work environment 🙏🤞

they are offering me 2k more than the other place plus new title. Mf this is not what I imagined at all. The overall total is 12k more than I currently make with all the room to grow...and my boss letting me get the dept organized and running smoothly. Also, he’s taking a vested interest in my education and is willing to take time for us to really delve into why our paid media is the way that it is so that I can speak confidently and represent him in meetings to come. Plus unlimited PTO and wfh days still.
😐 fuck I hate being in the position where I have to let someone down!!!!!!!

2021 Year in Review
2021 started off rough, y’all. i lost my job at the end of november 2020 and i still had no idea what i was going to do. i had moved into my own apartment a month before i lost my job so i was now paying more rent than ever with zero income. i had some money saved up but it wasn’t a lot so i had to withdraw all the money from my 401k to live on which also meant starting over for saving for retirement. not to mention being in the middle of a pandemic. it wasn’t a huge leap to say that i was depressed.
aside from that, the first four months of this year were a blur. i know i rewatched a lot of tv shows (although i had all the time in the world, i didn’t have the mental capacity to start anything new.) i read a lot of books. i never would’ve hit my reading goal had i not read so much while i was unemployed.
in april, i caught a lucky break that someone i used to work with had a job opening on their team of only six people. the interview process took forever, about a month just for three interviews. then they told me that they had hired someone else but they were very interested in working with me and would let me know if anything else came up. i was at a loss. this was the break i needed - i’d never interviewed for a job and not gotten it and of course it would happen when i needed it the most.
a week later i got an email from the company. they had another person with the same exact job put in their notice and they wanted to know if i was still interested in the position. i still can’t believe my luck how this worked out. i started my new job at the end of april.
it’s not the worlds greatest job or the best paid, and there are lots of things i don’t like about it. but i’m good at it. and it’s generally an 8-5 unlike my last job where we were working 10 hours of OT a week. with my last job, they would constantly deny us PTO. this job gives us unlimited and trusts us to use it when we need it and treats us like adults. i don’t want to be here forever but it’s a good for now job. plus i still get to work from home.
in the summer, i decided to do something about being lonely. now i’ve always been lonely, this was nothing new but i’ve never really had relationships and at this point had only ever been with one guy.
i downloaded all the dating apps but really only ever had any luck on tinder. i met a guy that i thought i could have something real with. we talked all the time and about important things too. i was nervous to meet him because i’m better on paper than i am in person. but i met him and it was awkward but i really liked him. but he had expectations that weren’t in line with what he deserved and he wasn’t able to commit.
when he couldn’t commit, i got back on tinder. i had a one night stand. this was another first for me (not to mention only the second guy i’ve had sex with). i don’t know how those usually go but this guy brought over wine and ice cream and we tried to watch a movie. we had sex. it wasn’t great but i think i needed the closeness. i taught him where the clit was, so to all the girls after me - you’re welcome.
the next guy i met off of tinder.. i think we’d only talked for a couple days and he lived two hours away. but he wanted to come see me and i agreed. he got in a car accident on the way here (no one was hurt), and he asked if i could come get him. i don’t know what made me say yes, but i did. i went and picked him up and brought him back to my place. we slept together. i thought it was going to be something serious.
he came over a few times and stayed for days at a time. we spent our time cuddling on the couch watching game of thrones and having sex. he never made me cum but neither had anyone else and oh how he tried. i think he wanted something serious but he couldn’t have it with me. he was a phD student and school was starting soon. i was too far away and he’d be too busy.
but that’s how i met one of my best friends and in addition the guy i’m going to marry. he said he couldn’t be with me but he thought his best friend and i would be great together. i thought this was crazy to be honest. but i was taking a lot of chances and this just seemed like another one worth taking. what was the worst that could happen?
we talked for about a week before he came to see me for the first time. this man came to my home, we went grocery shopping, and he made me homemade spaghetti and garlic bread. if that wasn’t a sign that this was the man for me, i don’t know what would be.
he came over almost every weekend but it wasn’t enough. he moved in with me about a month and a half after we met. i was so nervous - i’d never lived with a guy before. but honestly it was seamless like he was exactly where he was meant to be. we’ve only been together for about five months now, but i know this is right. i’m gonna marry this man in early 2022, and we’re planning to have an actual wedding in 2023.
2021 started out really rough, but i took some chances that paid off. i got a new job, i found a new best friend, i fell in love (with a man who can actually make me cum - holla), and at times it wasn’t easy. sometimes it’s still not easy - i’m still navigating things i’ve never had to before. but it’s been worth it.
at the beginning of 2021, i couldn’t even grasp making future plans. at the end of 2021, i’m finally starting to come out of that. i’m starting to look toward the future and see what’s possible.
2022, please be kind.
