Simptober Small Things You Do M-list
Pairing: Seungmin (skz) x fem!reader

Warnings: none really
Notes: Ik it says back of a car but like deal w it >:0 anywaysss I feel like this is so kdrama coded💀

The dimly lit restaurant exuded an atmosphere of quiet romance, the soft glow of candlelight casting a warm embrace over the elegant surroundings. Seungmin had meticulously planned this dinner date, and as you sat across from him, you couldn't help but appreciate the thought he had put into it. It had been four wonderful months since you both started dating, and you were head over heels in love with him. Tonight, you felt the urge to tell him, to bare your heart and let him know just how deeply you cared.
As the evening progressed, and dessert arrived at your table, you felt your heart race with anticipation. The moment was perfect, the ambiance was just right, and you decided to seize it. You took a deep breath, looking into Seungmin's eyes, and with a slightly trembling voice, you finally confessed, "Seungmin, I love you."
Time seemed to freeze as your words hung in the air. Seungmin was taken aback, his mind reeling. Had he heard you correctly? Did you really just say that? The truth was, he had loved you from the very first date, but he had never found the right moment to say it. He had wanted to make sure his feelings were sincere and genuine, and he didn't want to rush into something as important as declaring his love for you. As these thoughts raced through his mind, a little time passed.
You, on the other hand, were growing increasingly confused. Why hadn't he responded yet? Was this not the right time? Did he need more time to process your confession? The tension in the air was palpable as you quietly continued to enjoy your dessert. When the check arrived, Seungmin reached for it and paid without a word.
Now, you both found yourselves in the car, the awkwardness between you heavier than ever. Seungmin couldn't stop thinking about how you must be feeling, and he desperately wanted to convey his love to you. However, he couldn't figure out how to break the silence. He was driving, and you sat in the passenger seat, the distance between you feeling insurmountable.
In an attempt to escape the uncomfortable atmosphere, you leaned your head on the armrest in between the seats, resting your arm there, hoping to fall asleep and put an end to the awkwardness. However, your hand slipped, accidentally brushing against Seungmin's, which was resting on the opposite side of the armrest. You quickly pulled your hand away, apologizing, "Oh, sorry."
In that moment, a confession slipped past Seungmin's lips almost involuntarily. "I love you too," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
You were taken aback, your eyes widening in surprise. "What?" you uttered in disbelief.
Seungmin repeated himself, a soft smile playing on his lips, "I love you. I'll say it as many times as you need to hear it."
Your heart soared, and the weight of the awkwardness began to lift. You couldn't help but smile back at him, your eyes glistening with joy. The car pulled into the parking lot of your apartment building, and Seungmin turned to you, his gaze unwavering.
"Can I walk you to your apartment?" he asked gently.
"Sure," you replied, your heart feeling lighter than it had in a long time. As you both stepped out of the car and walked towards your apartment, you couldn't help but think that despite the initial awkwardness, this night had turned into one of the most memorable and special moments of your relationship.
As you stood at your apartment door, you turned to Seungmin, who was looking at you with adoration in his eyes. You realized that this would indeed be a sleepless night

Who's Training Whom? or A Screed Of Reasonable Length About Why Étoiles Is Still 15-0 In My Heart
So, through this whole Codes vs Étoiles arc, we've been repeating the question over and over again: who is training whom? Are the codes training Étoiles? Or is he training them? Is he just making them stronger and stronger? Well, it turns out the answer is neither because Étoiles is learning and innovating and developing new tricks and techniques and the codes have learned a grand total of One (1) trick and are mostly relying on Number Go Up in a way that's antithetical to everything I personally enjoy about Minecraft PVP.
The rest of this will be under a cut on account of how reasonable the length is.
Okay, so what makes Minecraft PVP more engaging to me than PVP in other roleplay or video game genres? Well, the thing that makes it unique is that everyone is starting from a completely even playing field. Look at it this way: if a DND Barbarian and Rogue of roughly equal level just stand there and take turns hitting each other, the Barbarian wins. The Barbarian has more health and does more damage and that's going to tell pretty quickly. Of course, there are ways to compensate for it and the Rogue can think on their feet and engineer a situation where they win and of course there are also advantages to playing a squishier class, but the point is that there are squishier classes and squishier players.
Minecraft doesn't have that. Everyone has the same number of hearts and can theoretically use the same weapons and armor. If you and a friend jump into a Minecraft world and just stand there and take turns hitting each other, whoever goes first wins.
That means consistently winning at Minecraft PVP requires you to get good at thinking on your feet and engineering situations to your advantage. You aren't a tank by virtue of picking the tank class at the start of the game, but you can become a tank by making a turtle farm for turtle master potions. You aren't a damage dealer because you selected the high DPS character five minutes ago but because you spent hours grinding the resources to upgrade your weapons to the best they can possibly be. You aren't winning fights because the stats on your gear are higher than anyone else's. You're winning fights because you know how to control the fight so that you can hit the other guy more than they can hit you. If you're winning fights with other PVPers, it's because you're better than them at their own game.
Unless you're the QSMP Code Monster.
And like, to be clear, I don't blame the admin(s) for getting frustrated enough to brute force it. We know current 06 is competent PVPer and so are a couple others we haven't identified for sure yet, but I doubt they were hired specifically to be cracked at PVP. But like, they also do have to fulfill the role in the story of being cracked enough at PVP to kill either the super well defended eggs or the French Beast. Like, they do deserve to take some shortcuts.
But also, it does really really undermine the narrative of the codes and Étoiles training each other when the codes aren't really learning from Étoiles because there's a lot they could teach him.
For example, they haven't really made much progress on learning to outmaneuver them. Watch back any fight where he's fighting them 2v1 after the sweeping edge bug gets fixed. If you're fighting someone 2v1, you want to be attacking them from two different sides since they can only defend and counterattack from one side at a time. Watch how often they're both attacking him from the same direction. That's not an accident. That's Étoiles constantly moving to keep both his enemies where he can see them and it's not something they've made much progress on dealing with. The fact that they'll have three codes present but only two of them attacking at once pretty clearly demonstrates that they haven't recognized the importance of using the numbers advantage and negating the shield.
(Also, this isn't super relevant, but Étoiles is a master of healing potion usage. Watch how often he throws them ahead of where he's running so he maximizes how much he splashes on himself and minimizes how much he splashes on the codes. It's good stuff.)
One really clear moment that shows how the admins have a tendency to brute force their way through Étoiles related problems is in the fight in the basement of the lore dungeon where Étoiles was convinced he was going to die and the admins had to give him a goodie bag afterwards. At one point, he digs himself down into a 1x1 hole and a code follows him down into the hole to attack him and prevent him from warping away. He grapples out and seals off the hole. From his expressions and reaction time, it's pretty clear this was a plan to trap the code the whole time. The code breaks the block and rejoins the fight. We have never seen a code break blocks before or since including in otherwise relentless attacks on eggs behind unprotected walls.
Like, dude, you got outplayed. Take the L. And no, I don't buy that it's just the code getting more powerful from training with Étoiles because, again, we haven't seen it break blocks since that one fight. This doesn't seem to have been an ability added to its bag of tricks.
Speaking of abilities which have been, I do think that giving it God apples in that fight was a fine play. Okay, it's getting stronger and it can buff itself now. Great! Genuinely! But again, it's only really getting stronger in the sense of Number Go Up.
How does Étoiles counter this new threat? Well, one day he's laughing hysterically at the idea of Tubbo using something as pathetically useless as a soul saber and the next day, he's got a soul saber of his own on his hotbar. Why? Because the soul saber's special ability is that it nullifies special effects. That's useless against 99% of mobs, but the hearts and regeneration given by the god apple are special effects that the sword can nullify.
Étoiles doesn't counter a new threat by buffing his stats or getting a stronger weapon. In fact, he gets a weaker weapon. He gets a weapon that he thinks is terrible and shitty and garbage, but that happens to give him what he needs for his specific use case. And that's enough to turn the code eating god apples from a seemingly insurmountable advantage into probably a mistake to even bother with.
Étoiles fights the codes with three weapons out. First, his broken sword, which does such absurd base damage that it's stupid to use anything else. Second, the soul saber which turns the Code's most obvious power move into a trap. Third, the nightmare scythe, which blinds enemies, leaving them disoriented and giving himself time to recover. He also has his grappling squowk for mobility, Enough healing potions (he prefers to have at least 1000), a lava bucket for chip damage, blocks for gaining distance and controlling enemy movement, a water bucket for controlling enemy movement and clearing cobwebs, and his xp backpack to keep all his gear repaired. This represents a massive amount of prepwork and theory crafting to put together and have ready and decide on what to have and how to use it. He also has to know his notoriously messy backpacks by heart to be able to navigate to his other potions fast enough to be able to use them in a fight, which is he is consistently able to do.
The Code has a healthbar that doesn't move, a single weapon that does too much damage for the repair upgrades to keep up with, and sometimes it can spawn a single cobweb now, which Étoiles already had a counterplay ready for.
Like, I get that Étoiles is the goat. I get that. I am not going into this discussion unaware of the fact that Étoiles is the goat. I am not expecting the admins to be able to play at his level and to be able to pull out all the tricks he pulls. In fact, it's fine and even good that the Code doesn't have the same tools and moves as a player.
But it still feels a little cheap to say that Étoiles isn't ready for the sword yet when he's outplaying them every single time it's even possible to make a play.
Oh before I forget to add it in, the cobweb is the One (1) trick the code has actually learned from Étoiles. It's a good trick, to be fair.
Anyway, the other big problem with Number Go Up escalation that we've reached a point where it's Literally Impossible to fight the Code without the Shield. Without the Shield, either the Code is gonna have to be randomly weaker for no reason, or it's gonna just gonna get to run around pretty much unchecked for a while. To be fair, the Code running around unchecked could fuck, except for the fact that there are counterplays available if it didn't three shot people in full armor.
The big problem with fighting the Code right now, aside from the whole three shotting people in full armor thing, is that it has that sword that makes you drop whatever you're holding.
Luckily, Étoiles and BBH both have their own separate, individual solutions. Étoiles never got the chance to test his out in a combat situation because he got the Shield before it came up, but BBH used his against Code Tilín during the new member code battle and it proved effective. Unfortunately for all of us, Étoiles still landed the final blow on that Code so I think a lot of people failed to realize just how powerful BBH's strategy is.
But since then, the Code's damage output has just simply gotten so ridiculous to be able to cope with how ridiculous the Shield is that all those interesting, exciting strategies get sidelined in favor of Number Go Up.
So, uh, yeah. I think that's about everything I had to say. In conclusion hashtag hire jojosolos to play the code monster please quackity please she's a cracked pvper and she knows modded please

I didn't see this anywhere, so I decided to translate the tarot section of Yu-Gi-Oh! Bunkobon Volume 21, which provides commentary on Bakura Ryou as "The Fool" card. I was very excited to start this due to my longstanding disappointment with Ryou's general absence and lack of role during the Memory World arc, and I was interested in how he related to the tarot he represented.
Well, as I read and kept on reading, it became apparent that this was quite different from what I hoped for. "This isn't the content I was expecting to glean off of it," were my words when I was livetweeting my progress, and I'll elaborate later because this... went... somewhere, I guess?
Some caveats before we start:
This, and all the other tarot write-ups in the other Bunkobons, was not written by Takahashi-sensei but by a person credited as CoZo (see top left corner of the last image below)
Due to the amount of Japanese culture it absolutely immersed me in, I had this peer reviewed by a Japanese native (thank you, ash!) for errors and to make sure the translation was as accurate as possible without much loss to nuances
Related to point two, I also conducted my own research (I dug deep, starting from a JP YGO message board all the way to a 2009 blog post about these same tarot pages by screaming machine gun-san, a prominent YGO doujinshi artist at the time who created the Bakura/Atem books "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN"), and links are available for clarification (mostly Wikipedia for ease of access, click on underlined/clickable words)
CoZo refers to the characters as such: Ryou as "Bakura Ryou" and Yami Bakura as "Dark Bakura"/"Bakura" (which was troubling and what confused me by the end of all this but more on that afterwards)
Quite the long post ahead! Please enjoy and share your thoughts! I'd love to hear them!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Tarot Theater 63 0 ◆ The Fool ◆ The Fool's Journey―Joker―
Making an appearance this time is Yugi’s old friend who turned out to be his greatest enemy, Bakura Ryou. Looking back to when he debuted in the fourth paperback volume, his name quickly foreshadowed that he would be the final enemy.
After repeated mistakes, he should have lost face many times over, yet his steps remain light without a shred of worry on his face. So, who exactly is he?
The name "Joker" is a name familiar to all―they pretentiously sat among dignitaries in medieval Europe, greatly raised the gambling nature of card games, were viewed in contempt by the church at the time because of it, but remained the beloved star of the masses in countryside plays. They appear in folklore around the world, sowing discord unprompted and then disappearing once there is nothing else for them to do.
Neither good nor evil. Seemingly dense but actually cunning. Causes great strife yet garners no hate. Catching Shakespeare's eye catapulted them to stardom―the jesters who served King Lear and King Oberon added conflict and vitality to their respective narratives by speaking to their kings in sarcastic tones and intruding in affairs within the royal palace. They even made it to the operas and the big screen, like J. Nicholson in recent years, playing the archnemesis in Batman, and F. Mercury, who also sang and danced…
A truly unparalleled existence in the literary history of mankind.
"You think they're the enemy, but when you look at them, they're among your allies, smiling innocently." Is that not exactly what Bakura Ryou is?
Despite entering the story fairly early, his first appearance in this project was near the end… But that is what the illustration is all about―an irreverent man with all the worldly wisdom of a fool.
Tumblr media
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tarot Theater 64 0 ◆ The Fool ◆ Moral Neutrality―Tabula Rasa―
The card Dark Bakura and Yugi used in the Ultimate Dark Game… had a blank face. Thinking of a person or an object existing in memory will make them show up on it. But because only those that exist in memory may be imprinted on the card, Yugi cannot make something appear if it does not exist in memory.
Valuing the rules, Yugi is rendered at a loss. But Bakura, who does not care, summons and fuses non-standard monsters, steals Yugi's abilities, and counterattacks… all as he pleases. Bakura's resourcefulness and cunning stand out, and his mastery of mimicry proves itself as well, but this is where his weakness is exposed―even when nothing is off the table, Yugi is a cut above the rest in his ability to create original concepts that follow the rules and negate exploitative measures.
Tabula rasa… A blank slate. Where comic artists gladly bring their work to life. A pristine state where the greatest joy lies.
Nothingness… Ruin… A world stolen… I have seen heartrending paintings done by war orphans on the news and at exhibitions. Even the hearts of children suffering the ravages of war can be healed through art. Sadness unable to be put into words can only be expressed in pictures. While trying several strategies, therapists came up with "play therapy". Utilizing toys and games, it has been one of the few methods effective for young children with limited vocabulary and without ways to open their hearts though it has yet to be systemized.
Besides drawing, there are other means like creating miniature gardens, methods that use dolls and clay, and swordplay and playing catch for boys. The recent issue of Clinical Research in Psychology reports Saint Seiya as an example of a story wherein "an abandoned child becomes a hero", which was once represented by Susanoo. Perhaps it is for that reason that the series is popular even in South America. Even in Arab countries devastated by ongoing terorrism, one can see children's eyes light up at Captain Tsubasa.
The use of Yu-Gi-Oh! in psychotherapy is not in any way extraneous. On a cold, windy day a few years ago, over one hundred thousand children holding Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in their hands filled the streets of Makuhari, Chiba―and that sight, that excitement, is unforgettable.
Tumblr media
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tarot Theater 65 0 ◆ The Fool ◆ An Untainted Soul Adrift―Trickster―
Society has long known the true identity of "The Fool". Passed down through myths and folklore, psychologists called them "Tricksters". Puck, Kokopelli, Goku, Ivan the Fool, Hans… In Japan, Susanoo, Hikoichi, Amanojaku, and so forth would fall under this category. When the Trickster's wicked side surfaces, they are called… Villains. Thieves. Imps. Violators of order… Those hold true for Bakura as well.
Yugi is a boy with numerous "shadows", and Bakura can be considered as one of them. Men with a darkness to them are said to be charming, but I think the charm lies in those who have the capacity to keep that darkness under control and not let it show.
Yes. Yugi had several shadows. An evil existence… which was Marik. A pharaoh, a dark presence sealed within the tomb of memory living in hiding for years. And then Bakura, the childishness Yugi is now breaking away from. Whenever Yugi sees Bakura, immature and unfailingly blithe, it frustrates him because it feels like looking at his old self. Yet despite this bewilderment, he is unable to let Bakura go.
This time, Bakura's juvenile nature brought forth unfathomable terror. The insatiable monstrosity that is boundless, childlike enthusiasm was about to wreak unimaginable destruction upon the world. Bakura's occasional euphoric glee after a rampage is characteristic of how a child expresses gratification. To him, world war and total annihilation could be "playfulness".
Delighting in foul play and mimicry, Bakura does not actually know how to "play". Back then, children had an omiso―they could be a child from out of town, the youngest of the group, the slowest among them, and the like―in their games who was given more lenient and special rules, so they could mingle with the others and all play together properly. When the omiso unexpectedly played more actively, they were then allowed more freedom in games. But children nowadays do not know of the olden days, are less likely to play in groups outside, and only play games with peers that are on the same level as them. For example, even if the wind sprite Matasaburou or a zashiki-warashi spirit came to play, they would not have any way to do so… A wise mother could then only prepare an abundance of snacks and say, "This is for you, spirit. Thank you for playing with us."
In this day and age, we have lost the sense to accept unique individuals like Sendai Shirou, who may be slow-witted but pleasant. Getting along with them hinges on "fun". Can Yugi and his friends play well with Bakura?
Tumblr media
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tarot Theater 66 0 ◆ The Fool ◆ Bakura Ryou
"The Fool" is wise in the ways of the world and an excellent imitator. Sometimes it is even very powerful. When the great boom of the Middle Ages ended, it was the only one able to slip into playing cards and stay relevant after the tarot was in decline. It can substitute for a missing card in a row in "Sevens", surprise the player with a loss in "Old Maid", and turn the tables at the last second as a wild card in "Poker". It is an outrageous cheat. And quite the pest. But despite all that, it is a reassuring ally when a dealt hand is lacking. After all, it can become any card. Evidently, "The Fool" is ineffective on its own but suddenly becomes extremely powerful when borrowing the strength of others. There are people like that all over the world, so understand their nature and get along with them well. However, it could turn out to be an unfavorable yet inescapable relationship.

END.
This was an accomplishment and a half. But I'm far from feeling accomplished, just frustrated. In the end, barely anything written on there was directly about Ryou because I feel like CoZo lumped Bakura and Ryou together as one, which really bothered me. If it wasn't about Bakura, though, it was about Yugi (or Atem, not sure which one CoZo was referring to at any given time, really, since they were seemingly lumped in as one as well). Even Marik got a mention ("evil", quite the disservice of a mention too)! Nearly lost motivation finishing the translation, to be honest.
Overall, this seemed... off to me, especially the "Tabula Rasa" and "Trickster" pages. I can see where CoZo was coming from? Maybe? "Play therapy" (Ryou's talent for creating figurines/dioramas) for Ryou after experiencing a family tragedy... He's the omiso... His language is through (his love for) games... But I can't see Bakura as simply not knowing how to "play" or that world war and annihilation are mere "playfulness" to him (with the Kul Elna massacre plot point and all that). Yugi sees his old self in Bakura...? You lost me.
I'm not sure who CoZo is. I searched them up, found someone similar in name, but ultimately didn't learn who they were or what their background was or why they were featured in the Bunkobans (and I just didn't care enough). CoZo might be a tarot expert for all we know, but they didn't know much about the actual character they were talking about to effectively relate "The Fool" to them. And it shows! Like I said, they just talked about Bakura like he was Ryou, like they're the same character (which made me think of the DSOD theory that there isn't a "Bakura", just a Ryou corrupted by the Millennium Ring's evil, but that's neither here nor there).
I mentioned that I came across a 2009 blog post by screaming machine gun-san while researching (it was through them that I realized why this write-up was so confusing to me), and they said it best:
"Hey, commentators... Can you please separate Bakura Ryou, Thief King Bakura, and self-proclaimed 'Zorc' Dark Bakura? You can separate your burnables but not this chaos!? No matter how chaotic these three are, this is not chaos!"
Look, I get it. The Bakuras are the most confusing part of YGO. But come on... You confuse the Bakuras, then you end up confusing the hell out of me!
We have three! They're distinct (see alt text lmao)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, in closing, I was planning on translating the rest of the tarot pages for each Bunkobon, but if they're all going to be like... uh, this, I'm not enthusiastic about it.
Special thanks to Aariachang24. His translations of "The Magician" (Atem + BM + BMG) and "The High Priestess" (Ishizu) tarot cards inspired me.

MY SHIFTING JOURNEY
For those who don't know me hi, I'm Elisabeth and this is my blog about shifting. The purpose of this blog is to share my journey and avoid misinformation, also accompanying you on your journey!
Now let's talk about my journey, how it started and how it's going.
I learned about shifting in 2020, on shiftok, when there was still a lot of misinformation about it. I immediately became interested in the topic and made my first attempts to shift in a DR of Harry Potter. I remember that I mainly used the raven method with special subliminals for my DR. After a while the first breaks began, because I tried to shift every night and this took a lot of energy from me.
During my breaks I started to become better informed, study the information we have and started to understand what was holding me back from shifting (mainly mental blocks). It happened to me that I wanted to shift, but was blocked and at that moment I understood that I had to take my journey back into control, so I forced myself to unblock myself, because I knew I wanted it. And guess what? I had my first two shifting symptoms (to be differentiated from the symptoms of body falling asleep, a distinction I may make a post on) three years after the first attempt. This motivated me a lot because it showed me for the first time the progress that was taking place in my journey.
I realized later that I needed to reprogram my mindset, and it was the best choice I could have made. This has changed my perspective on shifting a lot and I still recommend it to beginners today.
The first time I had a symptom it happened like this: I had just woken up and it was morning, there was a lot of light in my room and my mother had to tell me some things, so after listening to her I got back into bed to sleep again. I remember thinking "I'll try to shift later" and then I just let my mind wander over my thoughts until I lost control of them. I only realize now that I had some sort of REM activation. At a certain point, however, while I was thinking and my body was falling asleep again, I started to feel dizzy, while I saw colored lights (I think this was the result of my thoughts) e I started thinking "fuck I'm shifting!" and repeating these phrases to myself in distraught while I continued to feel symptoms. Out of emotion I decided to open my eyes so as not to shift and I got up in my CR. All of this happened while there were noises in the room, lights, and even my mother going back and forth. I was in a simple comfortable position. This experience it totally freed me from the fear that the external environment could influence my shifting experience. The reality is that the only thing that matters is really us.
Tumblr media
Some little informations about my routine etc
DRs: just Hogwarts for now, the same since I began my journey.
Scripts: I started with a paper one but now I use the Lifa App on the play store.
Methods: at the moment I'm trying one that I heard explained by a shiftoker which involves a meditation of about 10 minutes, then a sort of countdown from 100 to 0 with affirmations, and finally the use of the 5 senses to perceive the room (and focus only on that and not on the entire DR) where you want to wake up. I also want to try REM activation.
That's it, if you have any questions you can comment or leave them in the box, even write them to me in dm. Soon I will post explanations of some methods or some things that have been useful so far in my journey. Good luck shifters, trust yourselves!

ppl are so insane abt multis i literally can't imagine caring that much. Why should I give a shit abt the economy, i barely buy things in the AH and the dragon economy is like. Fine. Every petsite economy is inflated and fr does a good job at being stable. Hatchery and project dragons during nest rentals staying in banned accounts is indicative of a larger problem with fr and that's it's a dragon png breeding game that arbitrarily decided you can't breed whatever colors and eyes you want on your own for their awesome plot that progresses 2-4 times a year and for some reason lays the blame on the players for trusting others when you literally cannot know if the other person is cheating or not and also fuck you we don't have an official way to do nest rentals like literally any reasonable game. There is a dragon petsite from literally 2007 or some shit with studding implemented and i don't have to go "awh man my dragon is lost on a banned account" on there. is why is flight rising suddenly reasonable for this? To say to your players that it would be too much work to restore dragons and then not give an alternative method to get what they want is genuinely insane and i don't know why people get bad at multis when there is clearly a bigger issue at play. Is it actually the other person's fault or is it the moderation's for not giving you your dragons even when there's on-site proof they were yours and it was a nest rental? They could literally say "here's an exact social script that you can do to guarantee we press a button to restore your dragons if things go wrong" familiars had this same problem and they only recently added fiona and we have 0 news on nesting changes despite the repeated issues players have with their dragons being stuck on banned accounts bc of a nest rental. I'm not longstanding enough to know if fiona was shadowdropped, but if she was it only proves my point further we are chasing the dragon of changes that take a million years to become real and then in the meantime they do fuckall, twiddle their thumbs and go "too bad, it has to stay the way it is!" They are playing us for absolute fools.
Tl;dr or whatever: why do we care about multis so much when we can't know their full impact on the economy ever. It's inflated anyway. The moderation decisions that consistently refuse to revert nest rental trades without a viable and safe alternative are the problem and not individual people cheating at the game. Especially when you probably won't be able to reasonably tell someone is cheating (and shouldn't be expected to) so the fault being on you for trusting someone is a bad choice.
Imo the only weak point is economy i don't understand that shit so i can understand an disagreement there. Sorry for caring too much about petsites I'll do it again. But genuinely why do you people spend so much time thinking about these people i don't understand. I like minding my business so i can think about other things. If i lost my prized expensive dragons i would be more mad at fr staff bc of their backwards rules that i can't get my dragons back no matter what.

god A Mother’s Love is such a good song but it doesn’t just sound good, it’s also incredibly good at what it does, and I wanted to share some speculations / things I’ve noticed
//huge pacifist spoilers lol
firstly, Kanako’s theme being repeated over and over and over again. Ceroba says all her actions are in an attempt to carry on Chujin’s legacy, and that is true, but so much of his legacy was Kanako. It’s all for Kanako, and she’s constantly reminding herself of that. A detail I really like is when Kanako’s motif is played with the electric guitars at 0:55, it almost feels like Ceroba’s crying out in grief.
also the segment starting at 1:49 says a lot. When it starts out with both Protocol and Showdown but then only the Showdown whistles play.. LORD. And then Kanako’s motif joins Starlo’s. It’s almost like Ceroba’s thinking back in time, maybe starting to regret knocking both Martlet and Starlo out, and then she thinks about how much Starlo has done to keep her happy despite Kanako’s death.. and then she starts thinking about Kanako again.
the Hopes and Dreams motif makes me so incredibly unwell. The Justice motif directly afterwards does not help. Clover and Ceroba are both giving it their all, Ceroba fighting to deliver justice to Kanako and Chujin and Clover fighting to stay alive.. but since Justice is both the game over theme and in kanako’s theme, maybe clover begins to truly see what her motivations are, and wants to help her (by dying lmfaooo)
Kanako’s theme plays again after this, and the piano is a is a nice contrast to the intense electric guitars beforehand. It sounds pleading, almost, the same way Kanako was pleading to be injected and carry out her father’s legacy, the same way Ceroba begs you to give up so she can put her guilt to rest.
when Kanako’s theme is played for the last time at 4:26 it gives a sense of finality to both the song and the game as it gets progressively lower. For a fangame that takes place before the main story even starts, there’s a really strong feeling of closure when you’re done. And even though Ceroba is definitely a difficult boss for a pacifist route (“THERE’S FOUR PHASES??”) you still feel so rewarded afterwards.

Why do you feel like doyoung's annoying? I already watched that episode but I feel like on the surface level, lee dong's the more annoying one? I dont know why we read it so differently hahaha. Could you elaborate why you think that way? I also think both taeyong and jaehyun are pushovers loll like in daily activites, not on major life decisions ofc
Haechan is an annoying person, many neos told us this. However, it is a tool for him, he uses any means to attract attention. As a child with abandonment issues, it is a normal way to cope. It is also was a protective mechanism, a shield, probably. Attack first. And, of course, now it is part of his entertainment repertoir as an idol. The older Hyuk becomes, the more he shows his serious side. He is actually more on a calm side, he is an observer and can demonstrate patience. I think the way he can pair with Taeil so well for creative work is a reflection of that. As well as the way he dresses for himself (old professor type, heh), and how he interacts with the fans, his attitude to his own career.
Doyoung is annoying by nature, he was a noisy kid who didn't want to sit down, a menace to teachers. He said he joined clubs and student counsils because he was bored. He needs to be busy non-stop. With him it is the other way around: life taught him to hide this side of him, to be more pleasant, more pleasing. We are used to seeing Doyoung in Parent role, when he focuses on someone else, channels his energy into a single beam, so to speak. When he on his own, when he puts himself first, his energy is scattered in a chaotic way around him. I always compare Doyoung's brain to a beehive. Now imagine this hive buzzing and bees flying around it. This is the image of "annoying" Do gives. He can sting at any moment.
Tumblr media
2Dong's Mokchu was Haechan's idea. In the 0 episode Doyoung played the supporting role. He praised Hyuk for his wit, he accepted Hyuk's greeting ideas, he didn't try to be main MC, he let Hyuk lead. 2Dongs had a good rapport, everything progressed smoothly (and the editing helped). This is why you didn't read anything as annoying. On the whole it wasn't.
However, they filmed late at night, Doyoung was tired and hungry, he was in the company of his bestie and managers he knows well, he allowed himself to relax and partially shed the idol persona. He was himself more than we usually see.
Tumblr media
Doyoung micromanages, interrupts, gets distracted, argues, challenges your opinions, teases, makes jabs at you, gets amuzed at your expense and laughs every other minute. People like Haechan, Jaehyun or Taeyong can deal with it. People like sensitive vulnarable Yuta or seeking peace and calm Taeil can get overwhelmed and annoyed.
I think I can use the adjective "abrasive"? Doyoung is not agressive, he is just noisy, reactive, demanding. I'm not saying it in a negative way. I'm just pointing out that the real him is not for everyone to be comfortable with.
Take the moment with Doyoung interrogating the male manager why he didn't like the restaurant Do recommended to him (You didn't like my choice? Dare to explain why?). Do was so into getting the answer out of the man, he stopped listening to Haechan and paying attention to the task at hand (shooting the programme). And later was like "Eh, I wasn't listening. Repeat what you said?" to Hyuk, heh.

I've mentioned this before, but what makes skephalo really fascinating is that the entire relationship is documented from the start till now, hours and hours of content and clips where they'd sit together almost daily on stream and talk and hang out because of this you can chart the progression scarily well if you are insane enough to watch all that content. Of course some things are behind the scenes and they are both very good at being theatrical and faking things, badboyhalo especially thus the skephalo issue becomes as this, what is real and what is fake in all that content?
my method with mapping them out was just brute force, collecting information over time and comparing it with other moments to see where the patterns of behavior repeat and where they break, this is a really fucking mentally insane task that I don't wish on anyone but it does explain why skephalo discussions are so lacking in the general sphere because they either draw in the same crowd as karlnap who cant pick up the subtleties (this why a lot of the popular skephalo clips are cringe) or more commonly people at first glance dismiss skephalo as blatantly fake, I know I did at first when I first joined the fandom, but over time I'd get exposed to little bits of inconsistency in their theatrics that made me go hold on? especially with badboyhalo
there are subtle progressions and phases to their relationship that I will divide using years and I will also map out notable moments that I remember
The start
they've first met at the end of 2018 in the infamous "I applied for staff on 50 minecraft servers" skeppy video, bbh was the only person who responded to skeppy because he knew skeppy was a popular youtuber and hoped skeppy making content on munchymc would popularize the server tl;dr of the video is that skeppy keeps "pranking" bbh till bbh has a meltdown and gets pissed, this video is not faked as far as I could tell, bbh did have an inkling, I think, that skeppy might do something, but due to the fact this was their first time interacting I do think his reactions are genuine in it this video blows up and really kicks skeppys brand as a "minecraft prankster" into high gear, skeppy then riding the high of that video tries to milk bad for more content by convincing his mods and admins to force them into calls together and shit like that a couple more videos of this get made and in the last video of this nature skeppy asks people to go follow bbh because he felt like giving back to bbh (and I assume also because he felt bad for harassing this dude) skeppy manages to get bbh to 100k subscribes, bbh at this point has been on youtube for almost 7 years and he hasn't cracked past 10k at the time, bbh is VERY thankful to skeppy for this to the point of crying - skeppy feels morally good about this now its never explicitly said by badboyhalo but the way he phrased things to me in the early years whenever he'd talk about his relationship with skeppy is that he felt so thankful that he would've let skeppy get away with a lot and boy did skeppy take that sentiment and run with it
2019
so with that running start I am sure they've realized they're a great pair, talked about how they wanted to handle videos and what their boundaries were going forward, right? wrong 2019 skephalo is very rough play, skeppy is exactly what you'd expect from someone who would do prank videos in that time period: 0 empathy 0 social awareness skeppy had two ways of creating content at the time, prerecorded videos and more commonly going live with a prank/plan in mind and winging it and then editing down the stream later a decent amount of the prerecorded videos are faked I am very sure of, like the pizza video, due to later inconsistencies that they'd drop but there are multiple videos and theories online about that so I wont discuss them I am more interested in the ones that are not faked and they more often than not happen to be the livestreamed ones! in those not faked ones I am very certain they've never had conversations about boundaries because guess what? they've had them live instead! in the middle of it happening! a notable prank of skeppys at the time is that he'd go live without telling bbh, join a call with him and keep streaming for hours with bad unaware that what he is saying is broadcasted to hundreds/thousands of viewers oh he'd tell bad eventually, when the time is right and the moment is funny and bad would get pissed and it would net the views and rinse repeat, there are plenty recorded instances of streams of this nature that I could find and in each and everyone bad immediately after finding out tries to calmly tell skeppy not to do that and skeppy would promise till next time, this prank definitely was one of the shorter lifespan pranks it stopped happening pretty fast but it showed me a couple of things -they never talked about the types of pranks -skeppy cant actually understand when bbh is being serious and when he isn't when they are live and it took upwards of 3+ times of bbh telling him to stop I think bbh had to tell him to stop in private and that's when skeppy got the hint I am not saying badboyhalo was completely a doormat victim in all of this, bbh is very smart he recognized that him and skeppy are growing in popularity, he knew what people wanted to see from him and he leveraged this, I think his reactions were 60/40 fake to real a lot of the time bbh didn't trust skeppy but he could trust in not being able to trust him, and he was willing to let skeppy do things like that because he figured it was worth it in the long run after skeppy did the live streaming without telling him, bbh started becoming wary of it knowing that it is a possibility with skeppy, and he'd check skeppy's channel to make sure skeppy isnt live, to circumnavigate this skeppy would stream instead on his backup channel starting a really fucking insane cat and mouse game but hey thats their entire relationship also talking about shipping and possible feelings in this time period I definitely think there isn't much to be seen, a lot of popular clips are from this period but they are just skeppy's repressed gay pandering coming into play while bad is just trying to avoid it/stay neutral skeppy was the first to tell bad he loves him to get him to soften up after a prank and bad immediately throws it in his face very coldly
amusingly it was also in this time period, after skeppy singlehandedly spawned a ship by himself, seems he got too fruity for his birches and said he was "uncomfortable" with being shipped with bad, while he was telling bad that he wanted to kiss him, that he loved him etc etc this isnt to say there was nothing there, I definitely think skeppy got a crush on bbh first
here is the clip that killed skephalo in 2019
things of note: he never joked about wanting to kiss a6d or hug him or told him he loved him not even once (also the excuse is very dreamcore, bisexual denial) skeppy has talked a LOT about kissing bad, but one of the bigger moments that is still big till this day is this clip
youtube
now funnily enough the stream where this clip is from actually illustrates perfectly why I think badboyhalo faked a lot of his reactions, the stream starts out with skeppy griefing bad for around half an hour, bbh at the time was known as "the angriest man on youtube" and he'd spend a lot of the time just having breakdowns and yelling at stream because he knew that's what people wanted from him but it definitely took its toll on him in that stream alone he goes from riled up and shouting and breaking down to quiet and hanging out with skeppy and talking with him and messing around like pals, he is exhausted after the shouting but he seems generally okay to be around skeppy for extended periods of time because he enjoys his company another stream that is always brought up to the counter that bbh wasn't faking it point at the time is his birthday stream, where the memes and bullying got so intense he starts crying
youtube
again without context it looks fake, but things of note -bbh is a very easy crier -this was a huger wave than usual of memers -bbh immediately moves on after and goes into his "shouty persona" my assessment is that he probably cried for real because it was overwhelming or tiring to him/he was having a bad day but he knew there wasn't much he could do about it a common thing bbh does is he tells people to "stop" and it just makes things worse, he is aware of this and most of the time utilizes it to his advantage (telling meme donos to stop, increases the donos) but I do think when things get rough he doesn't actually have a failsafe on how to handle things when they get overwhelming so he just defaults to asking people to stop which backfires the 2019 era in a nutshell is VERY blurry boundaries, exhausting to watch and has some of the most fascinating interactions I've ever had the displeasure to witness between 2 humans who still say they like each other , this period of time held a lot of mixed emotions from both parties they definitely were fond of each, skeppy would let bbh track his location irl fairly early on in their friendship, and then 3 months from then you'd have bad telling skeppy that he wouldn't even consider them friends
2020
okay moving on to greener pastures, 2020 has skeppy maturing and them getting closer, MUCH closer than they were before, if you clicked on any of the previous videos or looked them up in 2019, I'd like you to compare it with this shit
youtube
this was in the middle of 2020, in the dream smp so what happened in the time period between? absolutely no clue in much the same way I think if you are stuck with someone you hate long enough you can start to like them, or if you stare a stranger in the eyes for 10 minutes you fall in love - I think they just spent SO much time around each other mapping out how the other thinks and talks that they've just become comforted by each others presence
youtube
skeppy in this period still pulls pranks on bad, but they take on a "pig tail" pulling quality, bbh definitely enjoys this softer side of skeppy and encourages it a lot and they seem to have a better understanding of each others boundaries, live streams become more about hanging out than fucking with each other. The transition is very subtle and very gradual that I'd be hard pressed to point out a moment as a "Moment" sure there are things like skeppys breakdown and bad comforting him you could point to, but I wouldn't call them quintessential moments but a byproduct of their growing closeness in the odd situation they've found themselves in
I glossed over the meetup stuff in 2019, because a lot of it was non serious, the moment where bad offers skeppy to move into his house was later addressed by skeppy in a stream in which I have since frustratingly lost, he says that he was sure bbh was joking and wasn't actually serious about renting him a space or so he assumes anyways there was one serious attempt in early 2019 where skeppy wants him bbh and a6d to meetup at vidcon but bbh throws every excuse in the kitchen sink at him, while skeppy gets more and more upset as the conversation goes on, the video is privated sadly and I couldnt find clips of it but it is the first mention we have of bbh saying he dislikes planes, skeppy offers to drive him, and then bad says he gets nauseous being driven, skeppy tells him he can drive and bad says "ah shucks I am busy" basically bad tries to outright avoid saying he doesn't want to go while making up shitty lies in the process, skeppy is hurt by this and throws a tantrum the reason I bring up the meetup now in 2020 is because in early 2019 you could tell one of the biggest factors bbh didnt want to meetup with skeppy is that he simply didnt trust him but as they got closer and the lines get blurrier, the topic is revisited multiple times and each time with the same excuses or under "joking" pretenses you can tell there is a larger issue here than just bbh not trusting skeppy if you watch this clip even though it seems fake and like they are acting a lot of these issues and fears are genuine and byproducts of 2019 trust issues, skeppy still thinks bad doesn't trust him, and it is causing a rift between them I wish I could show you the 2019 clip because it is a lot less bullshit and uwu theatrics and really shows "oh wow this is an issue between them" but meetup things aside 2020 marks them as obscenly fond of each other, and can almost finish each other's sentences by the end of it, they have some issues with communication still and they default to theatrics instead of talking about it but overall its not 2019 and thats great, I'd say this is where skeppy's crush properly flourishes and his obsession with bbh starts to really kick into gear, and bbh loves and enjoys this
2021
can't start a year without a drunk stream where you ask 20k viewers if they know if your crush is straight or not what I am referencing above is the since deleted best decision any content creator could do once they get to a legal drinking age, which is stream it live! skeppy turns 21, does a drunk stream and in front of god and his people asks chat if they know if bad is gay, keeps repeating bad's name while giggling, acts like a fool around him and is generally just embarrassing with such a great start to the year you can tell they got worse in their totally heterosexual behavior, which frankly I didn't think was possible
now going back, that's a good question to ask, is bad gay? a better question would be, is skeppy? skeppy has demonstrated over the years so far an issue with hypermasculinity that he only starts to shed once he meets bad, he only does soft gay shit solely with bad and not a6d who has his own masculinity issues going on that no one cares about skeppy fucks, as I am sure will come as a surprise to some of you, he is a very successful fuckboy from the offhand mentions he tends to drop here and there, it seems to be just a girl thing but due to the influence bbh has had on him I would not be surprised if he started to consider more and that influence is very considerable, bad is soft and very in tune with his emotions, skeppy starts matching this and he also becomes really soft, and starts acting in frankly bisexual fuckboy disaster ways I wasn't kidding earlier when I said this year was much gayer than 2020, their voices got even softer, skeppy ditched the pretenses and stopped griefing and pranking bad outright, and all the content they made together that pretended to be that was just filled with so much love and adoration and respect I honestly feel disgusted watching it at times I think this is the year where bad starts really liking him back hard, and that's why the tone shifted the only way I can describe how bad talked, interacted and or did anything skeppy related was infatuation and it wasn't all theatrics, he'd manage to make any and every topic about skeppy simply because that's where his brain was constantly at this year
speaking of bad's infatuation this is the year when the egg arc was also introduced and its plotline is nowhere near subtle and it puts every other romance coded ship on the server to shame bad gets infected by the egg, skeppy sacrifices himself so bad can continue to live free of its influence, bad doesn't want to live without skeppy and thinks kissing him will free him but when that doesn't work he throws himself back again at the egg bargaining with it to give skeppy back
youtube
now if you watched this without knowing about the whole skeppy jokes about kissing thing you'll note that this is probably just pandering and you wont be fully wrong, but I just explained how skeppy went through a phase where he regretted doing the kissing jokes and how bad tended to stone wall him when he did in 2019, now compare to this, this is what makes skephalo intriguing this is also the year where the skephalo renaissance happens, mostly by bad liking unhinged kissing fanart and showcasing art of him and skeppy making out with tongue on stream - but skeppy isn't also blameless, he draws himself choking on bad's dick in gartic, amps up the flirting, and bares his heart to him multiple times etc the big elephant in the room by this point is the meetup, why isn't it happening when they are so fond of each other? how does skeppy feel about it when before he saw it as a sign that bad didnt trust him and still held him at arms length and that upset him, did they simply move on from it? is it still in the background?
how can they be this close with that between them?
you know how I said before I cant tell you a specific moment where their emotions and tones shift? well I can now, the 2021 gayness uptick happened specifically around march-may, so everything I wrote above for this year barring skeppy asking chat if bad is gay, started full force around those months the difference is so marked and stark that it just jumps at you full force I cant tell you in certain terms why, but I can put on my little tin hat and speculate it had something to do with them finally talking about said elephant! since to me that was the only thing stopping them from getting closer
around march bbh and skeppy made a deal that they would meet before the summer is over and the months ticked by with no indication of them meeting but the odd thing was, they only seemed to grow flirtier and more into each other - which you would think would negate my theory but hold on! by july (7/15/2021) bbh was actually, and every seriously considering going to vidcon and he seemed he would go through with it too and this took a LOT out of bad, he spent 4 or so hours explaining to puffy and skeppy why he was so afraid of vidcon reusing a lot of the same old things he'd say in the past, and adding in more things like how he wants to meet skeppy before they go to vidcon and if they dont they will just ignore each other at vidcon, but instead of skeppy taking it personally and getting upset with him like he usually did they were literally on the same page for once, skeppy even said that he just wants to do whatever bad was comfortable with and that there is no pressure so, my analysis on why they got so close is that, bbh finally explained to skeppy his fears and reasons and skeppy finally understands that its not an issue with him, they've probably affirmed how much they care for each other and assuaged their anxieties and skeppy is willing to wait because it seems that bad DOES want to meet up eventually
in a youtube video I have since misplaced and I am too tired to search for bad goes "me and skeppy are in agreement that our first meetup shouldn't be in vidcon and we will just ignore each other" skeppy previously would've yelled at how incredulous that is and would've been hurt and taken it personally
but now he finally understands and agrees with bad because he wants this to be perfect for him you can even see in the first clip I sent in the 2020 portion that bad mentions he wants it to be 100% at around 13:30 minutes and bad says and I quote "he(skeppy) wont accept that" it seems like skeppy finally did the meetup ended up cancelled but there has been no issues between them and they kept going strong with the gay if you want to consume any skephalo content I recommend this year as their peak, honorable mentions being "blow on my dice" ppsat, pride month jackbox, chess stream where andrea and alex ask if they are dating, ant calling them platonic soulmates while drunk and gushing
2022
so where are they now? well...skeppy is not having a good year, his merch company got bought out, he got triple cancelled on twitter and youtube and he has been feeling demotivated about his videos he literally dropped off the face of the earth and the only person in contact with him is bad and the only reason we know this is because bad is still rotten enough to go "oh skeppy told me this" or "skeppy did that!" skeppy still puts out videos with bad but they lack the charm they had in 2021 and he seems to just be doing them for the sake of doing them the mcc bodes well for skeppy getting back into content but I genuinely think he has been traumatized from ever streaming because he is actually self aware enough now and fears he will say something stupid because he does tend to blurt out and do stupid shit if you haven't watched the dnf skephalo mcc video I really recommend skeppy's pov him and bad are really cute
-------------- I could've added so many more clips for each year but that wont actually help you understand skephalo, it isn't defined by definitive moments because they are very good at showing others only what they want to be shown and a lot of their interactions are made with the mindset of entertainment first and foremost I hope I managed to showcase that just because they approach things from a theatrical perspective doesn't mean there isn't much more going on under the hood
Dnf tends to have a lot more raw unfiltered moments, where as skephalos moments are all filtered through a bullshit filter because they just have so much experience with being live for hours together and never saying what they mean ever

Could you give some advice for your language learning journey (material wise and also how you stay motivated)?
Hello! ^^ Well I'm not an expert but I will try to help. So, to get something clear about my journey, I didn't get a good start by myself.
Journey part (feel free to skip it if you wish, I just felt some context might help with motivation cause I'm a slow learner and struggled to find my pace, as well)
I started listening to Japanese music in 2012, but only found the motivation to start learning the language in 2015. I'd already heard I needed to learn hiragana and katakana first so I was discussing that with a friend, who had then suggested me a YT channel, which I unfortunately no longer follow, but basically there was a dude who taught people how to play Shogi, the Japanese chess, and just so happened to have a playlist with teaching people how to write hiragana and katakana. The reason why she suggested that guy was because she too wanted to learn obviously and found that his explanations were very good and he also wrote the actual characters during the recording so that you could copy it. Nowadays that is so easy to find though, like, I don't know if you've already learnt yours, but if you haven't, try "how to write hiragana & katakana" or sth similar. There are so many Japanese people teaching stuff on YT nowadays that will be the easiest thing to find. After that, I wanted to learn some kanji obviously and get into grammar. That's how I had learnt English too, so essentially, my thought process was trying to imitate what my English teacher had done while teaching me when I was little (In Greece we learn foreign languages in more detail in separate schools from our main ones hence why I personally went for that.) So I kept searching and found JapanesePod101 but quickly realized any free materials were limited so I kept looking and found a grammar guide which I still have and I could mail it to you if you want, but it was a bit too much, I have to warn you. I also found a list of kanji for N5 level and started copying them in a notebook. Some people learn easier by just repeating stuff out loud, personally I am the copy paste type, so I wrote for example one kanji, then covered it with another object and tried to write it from memory and then again and again. 10-15 times depending on how difficult I considered the kanji. But then came the problem of motivation. I wasn't studying as much as I wanted and I felt I needed a teacher, not only so that I studied more but also because I needed sb to tell me when I am doing sth right or wrong since I had 0 knowledge of the language. I got lucky and there was 1 Japanese woman who was teaching in my island and her prices were low so I discussed it with my family and we agreed I could give it a try. All that happened in 2018, so I kept trying by myself for 3 years without significant progress. So this woman had me sit a test to see what I knew so far and then we started having lessons in a class normally. And that's how I actually got to learn part of the language well. In 2020 it was I think, that she decided to drop teaching for JLPT and do only speaking cause she herself learnt any languages she spoke without learning grammar, or writing and yeah we had a big disagreement on that and well I left cause I wanted to learn the language as a whole. That woman could speak 4 languages but all broken and I wanted to be fluent. So then I looked around, found nth on my island, but thanks to the whole Covid situation more schools in my country had started distant learning programs so I found another school in Athens within the same year and continued with them. The lady teaching me there was more of my kind of educator so I kept learning with her until last September. The reason I stopped was for finances and also because I had learnt all the grammar I needed for N3 but lacked severely in kanji and vocab so I felt it was better to take sometime to enrich those and keep revising my grammar until this December when I hope to eventually try the test.
Advice
I will list materials in the next paragraph, I will stick to motivation and advice for this one. Unfortunately I can't be very spot on this, cause each person learns differently, but I think that if you lack motivation there are 2 ways to approach it: The romantic one and the logical one. The romantic one is finding a passion around the language to keep you going and the logical is to find an affordable teacher online.
When it comes to passion, this is what drives me in life and I don't know if I should suggest it to others, but passion has taken many people far in life, and the fact I am personally failing doesn't mean it's a bad approach xD. That's how I learnt English too. It is expected from every kid in Greece to learn it, but I was begging my parents before I even knew that was expected of me cause I absolutely loved foreign music and I wanted to understand the lyrics. I was obsessed and still am. Just the thought of being able to understand all those songs, and later, when I realized how commonly used it is, that I could explore stuff and meet people from every place in the world only added fuel to my fire. And the same thing happened with Japanese. I was soooo mad I couldn't understand what my favorites said, not every band had translated material online and I needed to know. Although, to be fair, there was more to it, it's my dream to work with these people so if I wanted to be serious with my goal, I had to learn the language and be able to communicate with them. So yeah, if you have any passion around your target language it helps. Be it arts, travelling, making friends, you name it. Only you know your own desires. However yeah, if you are dealing with mental illnesses or ADHD or several other factors that can affect your mood and learning flow, passion alone can be tough to use, hence why I too needed sth more than my romanticism to get a solid start.
As for the logical part, I think it speaks for itself. It's so much better to have sb keeping you on track and that I think is sth that worldwide approach to education is responsible for. We weren't taught many things by ourselves as children, there was always someone more knowledgable leading the way. So yeah I think it's important to have sb, either local or not who knows the language better than you, around, at first at least, so that you get a feeling of the language, if you know what I mean. Japanese is a language with completely different writing system and grammar rules than most western languages so, it's really hard expecting your brain to figure everything out by itself. Part of me thinks it's easier for Chinese people, because their writing system is similar (I could be wrong) but for a person not born around Asia, I think we all struggle, especially those of us with motivation and self-discipline, when it comes to education, issues.
So yeah, all in all I'd suggest you did both, like find sth that you know will benefit greatly from your learning the language and a teacher. However, if you are as shy as me or freaking out as much as me about how legit some online app with teachers is, I'd suggest you looked for either institutes or solo teachers in your region first, and only if you find nth, proceed with online stuff. I am in no way saying that you can't find a good teacher living somewhere else, I just personally freak out about money transactions with other countries, or if I don't know how legit the app is, fearing I will get scammed and stuff like that. Mostly irrational fears. ^^' And don't get too stressed about doing this long term. Even 1 year of studying with someone else might give you enough of a gist to continue by yourself. ^^ You will have established a routine with them, which you could then continue on your own instead of trying to make up a routine blindly.
Materials
Let's talk materials now.
If you are the book type, like me, you might benefit from a Genki book. Now you've probably heard of people tearing this book apart about how "not good" it is, but I learnt quite a lot from it and it's very beginner friendly imo. I have an archive link with both the 1st and 2nd Genki (https://archive.org/details/Genki/Genki-ElementaryJapaneseWorkbookI).
But these are just for some basic grammar and reading. You can't learn only with those. When it comes to your kanji, sure you can learn from Genki's list, but they are not very accurate to the level of the book. For example, the first Genki book has kanji I came across with my 2nd teacher in N4 class and she was shocked I knew them already xD. I was like "It was in Genki!" and she was so mad xD. She was making her own content for her lessons and using some photocopies from another beginner Japanese book I forget rn. But yeah your go-to for Kanji for N5 and N4 is "Nihongo Challenge N5-N4". For higher, I'm afraid there isn't one of the same name and you will have to turn elsewhere. (I have a pdf of that book if you want it too, feel free to send me your email address and I will send it ^^) As for vocabulary, I'd suggest "Tango 1000 Essential Vocabulary for the JLPT N5". Very good book. There was sb who had uploaded it on YT and I'd swear I had the link to it but can't find it in my bookmarks for some reason. That I have only in physical form I'm afraid and it's a bit tough to find for free somewhere, but if you find a link or choose to buy it, it's so good!
For listening, I'd suggest you started with a few simple ones like those in JP Launch (https://www.youtube.com/@JpLaunch). I haven't tried their grammar videos so I dunno how helpful those are, but their listenings are nice for a start, after you've learnt some basic vocabulary and grammar. You can search their channel for N5 listening or N4 or whichever is your level and you will get plenty of stuff. ^^ And each listening includes unknown words you might hear during the exercise so that you can jot it down and learn them. ^^ That is another big thing I'd suggest btw. Apart from a notebook for copying kanji and words however many times you need to learn them, I'd suggest you had one more, preferrably with many sections, I forget their name in English, in which you will be noting every new word you find. Cause learning vocab from lists is one thing but you might find many new words through texts you read and listening exercises. Keep track of them and learn them whenever you can. I personally have mine separated by hiragana so that if I ever find a word that looks familiar but can't remember if I've learnt it before, I can go to the hiragana it starts with and find it easier. That way I also know which words I need to revise. When you've learnt everything from these books and want to try mockup tests, straight up search JLPT N5/4/3 whatever and listening next to it on Youtube. There are many of them and, even though they are a bit simpler than the originals, they help a lot with testing what you get by ear. And they also have the solutions after each question or at the end of the video so that you know how well you did. ^^
For full mockup test papers I don't know what to suggest. I must have some in pdf still but most stuff I have are N4 if you want them.
As for where to look for teachers in case you find nth closeby, I found several on a site called italki. I eventually never contacted anyone but my first teacher had told me to search there so I bet they are legit. I remember there was a specific system with which I had to pay that I didn't like but you might not mind it.
What else.....I think I covered everything. You might find useful material in the official JLPT page too, for each level. I remember searching there before. Oh and try to write sentences. When you learn sth grammatical for example, try to write 5-10 sentences using it. You won't be able to test how well you did without a teacher but it's important to try, imo.
But yeah if you are an audio learner, do consider Japanese cinema and series as well. Anime can be fun but they usually speak slang or ways that most Japanese people don't use. Both my teachers had told me that. When you get more familiar with the language sure, try them without subs, but as your starting listening material, nope. Jrockers do tend to speak in ways you'd see in anime, and so do people in the gaming and anime fandoms too, but outside of those spaces not so many do it.
As for a dictionary for words and how to write each word: https://jisho.org/ It's super good! It has words, it has conjugations, sentence examples, little gif-style video for how you write each kanji to know with what turns you write each line, etc. Amazing site!
Aaaand finally for the speaking part, I have 0 suggestions. I too agree with people saying you need sb else to talk with to get used to it. So yeah if you can approach sb on social media, good, otherwise try Hellotalk (app) or Tandem (another app for language exchange)(haven't tried them yet but people on reddit say they are good).
ps: don't go hard on yourself if you can't study for hours on end. Just make sure you can free 30 minutes for it every day at first and with time you can get to more. I started with 20 minutes a day due to trauma, I used to study way more when I was still at school but being forced into a uni i didn't want ended up with me having hard time studying for even 10 minutes, but then slowly through learning Japanese, because I liked studying it too, it got to 20, then 30 and now I can read from 1-2 hours a day. Take it slow if you have to, just don't skip days unless you absolutely have to, cause that's how you break a routine and can be tempted to not go back to it.
-----------------------
That was too long, I apologize, but I really hope sth out of everything I mentioned helps. It's a tough language and keeping up greatly depends on sth that keeps you going back to it, I believe. If you are not naturally drawn to learning many languages for the fun of it, you need sth to hold on to it, so do look for it and hang on it for dear life. Also, I came across this video the other day, I've yet to check the list she mentions, I don't know if it's free, but she also mentions a site named Refold that has many free resources if you want to check it out. Here's the vid I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyEioinPKvk
Best of luck and I hope you find the type of resources that are more of your type asap so that you get to learning asap too! ^o^/

doing a motif breakdown of lenna's inception/cassette beasts for my notes (by ear only at this point, i haven't transcribed anything yet) and it's absurd how many individual motifs that are used across both games are contained in this ONE track (the main boss battle theme):
0:00 intro 0:06 battle theme A 0:28 main theme 0:38 bridge E (i am pretty sure this one gets repeated elsewhere but i need to check) 0:49 battle theme A 1:00 battle theme B 1:11 main theme 1:22 battle theme C 1:45 battle theme D 2:07 outro
with the exception of the intro/outro and maybe the bridge, ALL of the motifs listed are repeated in other tracks both in lenna's inception and cassette beasts. not only does this track slap unto itself, it is also made up of extremely catchy themes that you can find in a considerable chunk of the cassette beasts soundtrack. sometimes in unexpected places! i haven't done a breakdown yet, but i've noticed variations on these motifs in some of the companion themes as well. "look at the sun" features battle theme D, and the chord progression in "my house (meredith's lost vinyl)" feels an awful lot like the main theme. if you've played a significant chunk of cassette beasts odds are you have already encountered all of these motifs in one way or another. this is all to say that joel baylis is a hell of a composer and i am going to need to write a real big post

Alpha testing, v0.10a & patchnotes
Ah, version 0.10! It’s finally here! Not that there’s really anything special about this one, but it’s getting there!
I had a different friend playtest this game, and I’m getting tired of just referring to them as an “another/different” friend so I’ll be naming them now. This one’s L. So L played through a very early version, like, version 0.03, and so there have been a lot of changes since he last played!
Funnily enough, the options file from the previous time he played was still there, and so at first I thought tutorials were not working, but when he checked, they had been turned to off. He decided to play through blind without tutorials, as it would give us a perspective of whether the game was understandable without any hand-holding.
I think he did quite well, and figured basically everything out. Any questions he had (he told me not to answer) would have been addressed as he played through the game - for example, he was wondering about increasing oxygen and party size increases.
UNFORTUNATELY, due to me revising some battle scripts, the AI scoring and targeting was completely broken. It was fine(ish) for single target attacks, but it would de-prioritise AoE attacks and when it would eventually use them, they’d only hit one target! That’s already been fixed now, but it was quite funny and cute to see the AI act so placid and prioritise support and defensive, especially the more aggressive robots!
Funnily enough, this is one of the ways I will alter the difficulty of the game. There is a (currently not working) option that lets you change the difficulty, and the way this will happen is not with simple stat scaling, but will make it so that the best attack options (as ranked by the AI) will not be chosen.
Overall though, L was happy with how the game was progressing along! No major issues apart from the misbehaving AI! Thanks for reading, and as always, the patchnotes are below the cut.
v0.10 Features:
New attack menu
Enabled moves even when not fulfilling the HP requirement in the select routine screen
Deadzone options actually work
Updated some tutorials
Can scroll between logs of the same type
Move selector handles an empty grid now
Added terminated icon when unit destroyed in routine summary
Added log help overlay
Help overlay controls added for stats screen
Area where enemies cannot move (because of walls) is now indicated!
Heavily dimmed dungeon structure during battle
Made defend/retreat move info appear when selecting it and removed an additional confirmation screen
Polish:
Removed debug _animdelay message
Removed debug stat string message
fixed dark blue's colour
Changed "destroyed was applied" to unique text
delete all active instances of affinity arrow animations when exiting equips screen
added animations to move selector
Made the text when choosing to move between floors more clear
make affinity animation not appear when swapping between characters
Stopped log viewer noise when scrolling and no new pages
Allowed enemy stat mouse panel during move selection now
Removed no-one from attack description
Added controls to view routine description (pause_pressed)
nerf homeostasis, corrupt, buff laser shock, bitcrush
made movement controls more smooth by checking key held rather than key pressed with a repeating delay
End of turn talk dialog doesn't happen if robot is asking to be recruited
Routines that only do 0 damage by default don't output in the routine summary
Updated the move text to reflect what the intention of the attack was (like, targeting), rather than the outcome
Put fuel collection and local nav research together for smoother gameplay
Made going back to the ship wait if messages are still being displayed
Stopped controls from scrolling left/right in the menu if menu still opening
Bugs:
CRT shader comes back on after screen fades
Stopped general data crash by checking if undefined first, and making undefined 0
Saved player level properly
Whether keyboard/mouse is active now takes controller into account
Status effect moves with the player unit when it moves
Routine summary now properly aggregates attacks
Routine summary now ignores attacks on dead enemies
Fixed controller turn and strafe controls
save grid expanding upon new database rows fixed
Transformation moves are blocked by player use (for now)
Fixed reflect animations not working properly

Seeing Double? It’s not the Halo
The original “budget” version for 1/4th the price
Tumblr media
And some gameplay of a version of the deck here:
youtube
I love all the colors, but as far as gameplay go, the one I tend to play the least is red. But for some reason, I often end up loving the mono-red commander decks I built, and this one maybe more than all others to this point.
Let me present you the latest of my decks I absolutely adore, Jaxis, ergo the Fair Mirror Breaker. She’s here to kick teeth and bring home a lot of value. As it turns out, teeth sell for a surprising amount.
She’s the star of the show, the deck is built around her, though if she’s absent the deck feature a few assistants that can do a decent impression. From her old mentor Kiki-Jiki, to his fabled cousin and of course Delina, the exchange student from another Multiverse. Jaxis might not look as good as Kiki-Jiki, and she isn’t, she won’t win you the game instantly with a combo (she can mind you, it just takes one more piece and is not included in this deck). Her ability has THREE more restrictions, you need to discard, pay mana and can only use it at sorcery speed. With that said, she’s also MUCH less scary and much more likely to stick around for a turn or two and not make yourself the archenemy until you’re ready to handle it.
With that said, whenever you activate her, you get the full value out of a creature. You get its enter the battlefield abilities, its attack abilities, its damage, and finally, its death triggers, which means Jaxis has access to an incredible range of creatures to do pretty much everything she wants, and you’ll be attacking while doing it and progressing the game towards an end.
She can ramp you, though this is probably her least used mode, this deck has a heavy top end. There’s plenty of mana rocks and a few creatures to ramp you or make treasures for you. The deck generally can make use of as much mana as you can throw at it, and you’ll often find yourself counting your mana every turn towards the end of a game to see what abilities you can use, in what order, and how many times. The most noticeable absence here are Dockside Extortionist and maybe Sol Ring, but I just don’t play those for the sake of people I play with.
Tumblr media
She can draw you cards. Her own discard is not really one, it’s a rummage because the copy is Blitzed and will draw you a card on death. This inherently will allow you to filter through your deck, but beyond that it also means any way to copy the ability will actively generate card advantage, and many creatures in the deck will draw you an extra card or more when they enter or die. In practice, this deck tends to have between 0 and 3 cards cards in hand at all time, but keep chugging and drawing as many cards as it plays anyway.
Tumblr media
She can remove threats, and not just by removing their players. A Red deck will, of course, mostly have damage based removal for creatures and artifact destruction, but some colorless help allows us to answer even problematic enchantments. The deck could probably use a bit more land destruction, but people get cranky at repeatable land destruction for some reason. And you get to play Flametongue Kavu!
Tumblr media
And finally, she can win you the game, generally by attacking people in the face with giant creatures while ALSO blasting them for damage repeatedly. There’s no fancy combos or anything, but a couple Terror of the Peaks or Phyrexian Triniforms tends to close games pretty quick.
Tumblr media
All the while doing artifact shenanigans as well because we’re in red and we need them. Shoutouts to Goblin Engineer being an MVP in the deck, finding us boots for haste and protection, Sundial of the Infinite to keep our tokens around, Cursed Mirror to loop with the Engineer to get extra value out of everything, Skullclamp to keep a hand full with out blitzed tokens for one more mana, or simply dumping a Phyrexian Triniform into our graveyard to Encore when it’s getting late and the game needs to end.
If you want a deck that generates a lot of value in non-traditional colors all the while progressing the game, I encourage you to give her a try! And there’s plenty more creatures that didn’t fit in the deck, the cuts were grueling and it’s fairly easy to make the deck under a much tighter budget. The core of the deck can be made to fit in $50 or less if someone wanted to, I just happened to have a lot of the pieces already.

expert skeletron used to terrify me but now i fight him easily way earlier in progression than i should lol. recorded this because why not. my dodges arent the greatest for 600+ hours of terraria though i must say
the only reason i thought id loose was time. i started taking a ton of hits at the end because i needed to get bolder and hit him more before morning, i had 0 doubts about me winning aside from running out of time
skeletron is a good boss but hes very predictable. his first phase is the hardest to predict tbh, his hands are real wild. but after? he just shoots skulls and charges. skulls. charges. repeat x100. though i am often unprepared FOR the change and get hit with a skull
im much more scared of the perforators (calamity mod) than this bitch lol. those motherfuckers like to kick my ass because i forget about the worms
armor is victide from calamity mod btw, its a bit stronger (including individual armor buffs) than gold. im wearing the melee helmet as well but the vanity helm is the ranger one. best armor for skeletron is probably the crimson set but i havent played calamity in a hot minute so ill probably find a better one for his progression as i play
also this fucker showed up at the end I HATE THIS FUCKING ENEMY SO MUCH

Inform Basics: Debugging Continued
Wow, it's so late for me to type this up! And I haven't even reblogged the last post. Sorry everybody, I've had stuff going. This will be a short one.
So in today's post, let's just talk a little more about actions. We talked a looong time ago about looking things up in the index. That's a crucial thing to practice. ACTIONS can be a shortcut to not only troubleshooting but figuring out how to phrase a rule. Let's say we are trying to do some new rules related to scoring and points in a game we're updating, but we aren't quite sure how the rules connect.
> score [death counting] You have not yet made meaningful progress.
Total Fail States Discovered: 0 out of 33.
Nineteen Eighty: 0 out of 2.
At this point in the narrative, the maximum possible score is 2.
[death counting - succeeded]
Ok! The relevant action is "death counting". We can jump into making rules right away.
Before death counting: if the player is hungry: Try eating a healthy breakfast.
(as a reminder, BEFORE rules don't stop the action unless we add "instead" to the rule)
Some more apparently arcane actions can be identified this way, as a recent forum post illustrated:
> restart [restarting the game]
The action for restarting is "restarting the game." We can use that to add some synonyms, or have other actions kick it off. We could add text, but that is a whole different can of worms. Mess with it and see for yourself!
What else? Another command I use all the time is SHOWME. If you enter it alone at the command line, you will get a list of every object in the room with us (note that this only works in the IDE or in test releases). Look out, it's the surprisingly crowded bathroom from Repeat the Ending:
> showme Bathroom - room a part of the body - backdrop Light - backdrop Grues - backdrop R1 - backdrop the air - backdrop Love - backdrop Energy - backdrop hair - backdrop ceiling - backdrop walls - backdrop trailer floor - backdrop bathroom door - open door bathroom door doorknob (part of bathroom door) yourself - PC ENTROPIC NUDGE - bleedsource pair of boxer shorts (worn) white t-shirt (worn) - Shirt toilet - supporter bathroom cabinet faux drawers (part of bathroom cabinet) bathroom countertop (part of bathroom cabinet) bathroom sink (part of bathroom countertop) bathroom faucet (part of bathroom sink) cabinet doors (part of bathroom cabinet) leak shower - open container bathroom mirror reflection ANEMIC DRIBBLE
(did you know there were grues in RTE?)
We can also find all of these things in the Index (with hyperlinks as usual), but they aren't listed by room. SHOWME is a great help for looking at local problems. We can drill down a bit, too.
> showme toilet toilet - supporter location: in the Bathroom unlit, inedible, fixed in place, scenery, unsheltering, notlockable, perfectable; transparent; singular-named, improper-named description: "The toilet, like the rest of our home, exudes an aura of misspent fortitude. It has been here a long time, and has nothing but water stains to show for it." initial appearance: none carrying capacity: 100 printed name: "toilet" printed plural name: "supporters" indefinite article: none list grouping key: none
With this, we can investigate the properties of any object in the room. This isn't in the Index, which makes the SHOWME command an indispensable troubleshooting tool.
Next time, a few more commands that are mostly related to play.

My Homebrew Discovery system
This is a system that I'm currently playtesting in the campaign I'm currently DMing. It's technically written for D&D 5E, but would require effectively no changes to be adapted to almost any TTRPG system.
The system is designed for times when the party is going to be exploring an area for at least some time. It's not worth the time and prep if the party is just visiting an area briefly, and it's not really suitable for long distance travel - though I'm mulling over a way to adapt it for that. It's instead designed to represent the party becoming familiar with an area, exploring it, and discovering what it has to offer. I'm currently using it to allow the party to explore two cities (one on the surface, one in the caverns beneath it), allowing them to reveal major areas and points of interest through it.
Here is my current edition of the rules:
Step 0) The DM prepares an appropriate number of encounters and assigns them each to a card in a deck.  The deck can be as small or large as is appropriate to the amount of discovery needed to explore an area.  As an example, exploration of a small city could be represented by a deck comprised of the Major Arcana of a Tarot deck.  Not all encounters need be combat encounters - or lengthy at all.  Exploring a vast system of caves could include a large number of cards representing effectively no encounter at all - perhaps a full 52 card deck where only the face cards represent “real” encounters.
Step 1) The party declares what they’re trying to do and/or where they’re trying to go.
ex. Remember where I heard that hot tip about something last week, find a magic item shop, look for my long lost sister, etc.
Obvious or simple options will not involve the discovery system. Finding an inn in a crowded city is not a discovery or a challenge.
Step 2) The DM declares what needs to be rolled, and the difficulty, as well as the length of time each interval will represent (which will generally be a flat number based on the area explored.)  The DM also decides in secret which, if any, of the available cards represents the goal.
ex. The DM might declare that the party needs to roll a DC 14 investigation check, decide in secret that the card they're looking for is The Lovers, and that each roll represents 4 hours of time spent.
Step 3) The party can attempt to use consumables, special abilities, class or background features, etc to influence the roll, at the DM's discretion. The party lists which option(s) they want to try to use, and the DM applies modifiers or advantage as appropriate. Of note, the "Help" action is not available. This represents party efforts as a whole - one player is taking the lead and using their modifiers, but the efforts of the group as a whole are represented.
Step 4) For each number above the threshold, the party gets an extra draw from the deck.  (ex. Rolling a total of 12 on a DC 10 check will result in 3 cards drawn).  If the roll fails, the time spent is lost, and no progress is made, but nothing else happens otherwise.
Step 5) The DM deals the appropriate number of cards, face up and revealed to the party.
Step 6)  If the desired destination is in the mix, the party has reached their destination / goal and play proceeds from there.  If the card the DM chose is not among the cards revealed, the party rolls to see which of the drawn cards they arrived at, and the player who took the lead in this action is given this card.
Step 7) If the party reaches their destination, the round is over.  The DM discards his hand, and resets the discard pile, but not the players’ hands.  Once a destination is reached, it is removed from the deck and remains in the hand of the player who received it.
If the party has not yet reached their destination, they can choose to continue on, repeating steps 1-6 with the now smaller deck of remaining cards (the original deck, minus all drawn cards.)
The party will eventually reach their destination, assuming the DM assigned it a card. The party will not know if the DM assigned a card until either the deck is exhausted or the destination is reached.
If the deck is exhausted without reaching the goal, the party has reached the end of their available search destinations and determines that it isn’t in the location they’re searching or isn't reachable by any means available to them currently.
If the party chooses to change objectives, reset the deck (but not the cards given to players) and start over, losing any progress towards the previous goal except for any cards handed directly to players.

the sequel to the 80/20 rule
"Remember Hofstader's rule: everything takes longer than you think it does, even when you account for Hofstader's rule"
Even without a strong parasocial relationship with her, it's comforting to see the How To ADHD lady grow older and more accomplished and talk about finishing writing a book. The quote above from a comment on that video reminded me of the rant I wanted to write about a few numbers that are actually useful in real life:
80/20
90/90
1 day for 2 minutes / 1 hour for 1 minute
10'000 hours
First, the classic 80/20. Some of my favorite applications include:
20% of your friends create 80% drama
80% of my art supplies and instruments collect 100% of the dust (was sad to see my viola go, but it was the only sane decision)
80% of your scrolling time adds (2)0% to your happiness
80% of your followers are inactive
20% of your mutuals actually could be RL friends
80% of the art you make can be unremarkable, but there will still be 20% of people who will think it speaks directly to their soul
20% of the things you learn can cause 80% of your growth
(with ADHD) the tasks that seem like 80% of your mental burden actually take only 20% of the energy (doing dishes, phone calls)
Second, there's a software development wisdom saying "the project/task is now 90% done... now for the other 90%".
While doing dishes might be hard to get started with for some of us, for the most part, the task progresses in a linear fashion - washing 20 plates takes about 4x more than washing 5 plates, give or take.
For tasks involving a lot of mental work, like art projects, product design, comedy, game development, I'd say that "the blessing is in the details". Think about how many jokes you can easily ruin by adding or removing just one word, or using just a few synonyms. Move one sentence around, add or remove a dramatic pause, and you can absolutely kill the pacing and punch of the joke.
Having the joke idea is 90% of the work. Flashing out the joke is another 90%. Having a "final draft" of your fiction, or your thesis before editor's review, a peer review or fact checking, is the first 90%. Having a youtube video "almost done, just a few things to iron out" means you still have many hours to go through everything, re-render it, re-re-review things, ask for a friend to review it with fresh eyes, find another mistake, etc.
There's a related rule, about multiplying estimates by their lack of detail. Let's say you come to me with the proposal to make "a new facebook". You say a few sentences of what is and isn't in the scope, give me your elevator pitch, I think "ok hm 20 developers, 4 years". But because we haven't ironed out so many things, I multiply it by ten, and tell you that number.
The smaller the scope and the more flashed out the details are, the less you multiply it. If you ask me to change a color of a button, I can say it's 10 minutes, give or take 50%. If you ask me to add polls to the site, I'll say it's a few months, give or take 50~400%.
Third is the rule of thumb TV and movie production goes by - expect to deliver 2 minutes of finished footage per day.
This of course varies by industry, country, budget, team size, production values etc. But it's important to have a humble but repeatable pace. For me, I find when editing 7-camera ERSO footage, it's about 1 hour for 1 minute of the result. (Assuming all the busy work and color grades have been done.)
Find your own rule of thumb. Maybe you can compose 1 minute of music in a week of work. It probably doesn't feel like enough. But maybe it's what you need to not burn out.
Fourth is the classic 10'000 hours to become very good at something. Playing an instrument, composing music, drawing, teaching, programming.
"Oh, but I spent 1000 hours and I'm already very good." I'm glad! Congratulations, honestly. But I'm sure you'll be a lot better after 9000 more hours. Remember the shuhari (守破離) concept:
At first, you're in the shu (守) "protect", "obey" phase. You follow a recipe, you learn the basics, you obey instructions.
Once you're competent, you move to the ha (破) "detach", "digress" phase - you've learned the rules, you know why they exist, and you're capable of breaking them here and there when it makes sense.
Sometimes, if you truly master your craft, you get to the ri (離) "leave", "separate" phase, where everything comes naturally, and you're ready to redefine the rules.
Not everybody gets to the "ha" or "ri" levels of mastery, and that's OK. It's fine to suck at art and have fun. And it's ok if you as an amateur make something good, and people like it! It's not bad to enjoy simple pancakes done by following a recipe, because, hey, they're pancakes. They don't need to have 20 exotic organic ingredients from a specialty shop.
There are no shortcuts to mastery. The best you can do to better use your time is to be deliberate about your practice. Have a good teacher, and pay attention to how you're learning. If you think you know something, to verify it, teach it to someone else. If you can't teach it, you haven't mastered it.
The 10'000 hour rule is also very comforting - if you feel like you suck at something even after spending a lot of time on it, just remember that progress is a long path, and mistakes are just the uneven stones on the path.
