What if that's how Lena is first tipped off to the fact that Red Daughter isn't Kara?
Red Daughter asks to play, and Lena initially laughs it off with a 'since when do you know how to play?' But Red Daughter tells her she's been learning, just for Lena. Lena makes a joke about youtube university, but ultimately waves for her to bring the board over.
They play, and though Red Daughter had begun to give Lex a challenge by the time she defected, Lena lets her win. When Red Daughter accuses her as such, Lena smiles.
"I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm for the game."
But Red Daughter insists that Lena play to the best of her ability. When Lena does, she trounces Red Daughter soundly. Far more efficiently and ruthlessly than Lex ever did. And Lex never held back.
It is in that moment that Red Daughter knows in her heart that Lena is not only better than Lex, but smarter too.
They continue to play, and speak of gentle things as they do. Red Daughter feels herself sinking into Lena's presence as the weeks progress, and though she knows it's dangerous to visit so often, she can't bring herself to stop.
But then, one day, she forgets herself. The game is uncharacteristically neck and neck, and Red Daughter pulls out a move she thinks will win her the game.
When Lena seems to jerk in her seat, Red Daughter realizes her mistake.
The move is one Lex favors-- one that Lena recognizes.
Lena sidesteps the attack and wins two moves later. Instead of resetting for another game, as is their custom, Lena claims exhaustion.
Red Daughter leaves her be, grateful for the first time to put space between them.
When Red Daughter next visits, her body is tight with nerves, her stomach churning in somber anticipation. But there are no accusations, no confrontation. There is only Lena and her warm smile, greeting her with a hug.

This is from a couple days ago. I was setting up to play #chess with my son and Trevor the #cat had other plans. This was the 3rd time he knocked pieces off the board. :).
dude thinks he can beat me at chess. This is not a game, bro. This is the battle for your pride. You have given up your mind in the first battle, and this? This is where you lay aside your body. Prepare for your final rest. It comes this night.
You’re literally playing into my hands. This is my field. These are my troops. It is a delusion that you command.
