@panaceaphantastica submitted: Hi I'm sorry for adding my face to the mix but I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this picture my boyfriend took of me excited about a pretty bug I found. Literally seconds before I started asking for the camera so I could take a picture to submit it here! Ur allowed to post this submission btw if me being in it is not against the rules! Took while climbing at the Brazilian Highlands, Itatiaia National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. I would love to know what kind of bug is this, there was this one time when I was 6 or 7 that I found (to my horror) three of these in my pants somehow???? They were just sitting there and I spent the day with those pants and only noticed something weird at night. Still feels like a fever dream.
(I think I accidentally deleted the auto tags I'm so sorry I hope this doesn't mess anything up)
Nope, it doesn't mess anything up, I can easily re-add the tags. They're just there so I don't have to type them every single time.
Anyhoo I too would get excited about this little dude! Very colorful. It's a cotton stainer bug, Dysdercus ruficollis. They're a type of plant bug, so definitely harmless to people. Not sure what they were doing in your pants lol. Human taxi?

My Hoya's annoying family members are visiting... Mealybugs!
Always practice observation. Check your plant's leaves and stem. Mealybugs love sneaking in your Hoya's. The sooner you find them, the faster and easier it will be to kill them & stop the reproduction cycle.

Asian Ladybug and Eastern Boxelder Bug swarm - Harmonia axyridis & Boisea trivittata
Normally the insect posts on this blog highlight one specie in particular, perhaps with guest appearances from other insects that share the same environment. Today, two different insects share the spotlight from a warm and sunny weekend day on what has otherwise been a brisk start to autumn. To get up close to these Bugs meant going into the swarm! With so many individuals in the dirt and on the pillars, you can only imagine how many were airborne. In reality, there were so many individuals you could actually hear the Boxelder Bugs buzzing around. Normally the sound is very slight, but many individuals bring out a low drone, that while unnerving at first, settles down when you remember that all the insects here are harmless to humans. If a few land on you, there’s no reason to panic, but not everyone likes aggregates of insects. I’m very happy to see them once more. When sunny weather comes along during the more chillier months, not a single minute can be wasted! Soak up all the sun possible, metabolize and get moving before snow and cold necessitates overwintering. With warm soil and stone to take advantage of, these insects could warm up quickly and enjoy an active day.
It’s not likely that these insects target each other for food. At the very least, they would be tolerant of each other. Ladybugs are the predators here, so those Boxelder Bugs better watch out (hahaha). The latter meanwhile should take the last few days of warmth to finish its seed feeding before the cold returns. It’s very important to stay fed during the cold as energy reserves are needed when the Bugs have little to eat (for those that will overwinter). It’s especially important for the females as they’ll be responsible for laying eggs for the spring surge of Boxelder Bugs! Both of these autumn-themed insects will hide away in the soil or in the urban environment when winter arrives, all the way until spring returns. Ladybugs inside houses are common around that time; I usually see a dozen or so. Just when it seems that all is quiet around the house, there’s the sound of small collisions between a flying Beetle and a ceiling lamp! It may be confusing indoors, but anything is better than the harsh cold and long winter. On the plus side, Ladybugs in the house can be of benefit as they can help keep your indoor plants pest free (if they actually find your plants and stay hydrated). Our rubber plants could certainly use the protection after the Scale Insect incidents we had earlier this year. Boxelder Bugs on the other hand aren’t as welcome indoors, but are not dangerous to humans, even in large numbers.
Pictures were taken on October 22, 2022 with a Google Pixel 4. Have a Happy Halloween! Like the insects before you, it’s the perfect time for red, black and orange.
