To get real niche lol part of why I love old school lolita (you know besides literally growing up when that was The dominant lolita fashion style so its what got me into lolita)

Is that it embraces the 1 color dresses, 2 color no pattern dresses, lace, and less accessories.

For one, the no pattern and lace containing dresses nowadays are looked at as cheaper or something "not actually lolita" when like... in reality it was always lolita if it was a real lolita fashion brand, it's just the cheap cosplay knockoffs that were too short and actually anime outfits were copying that style more since that's the lolita dresses the anime were making skimpier and copying. And that's still mainly what cosplay cheap fake lolita like dresses look like, because anime took looks from lolita At That Time period and then it continued on as it's own beast (also anime is more likely to animate simple dresses than intense pattern dresses I'm guessing). The reality is like... lace is lolita if it's on a lolita brand dress. Period. People moved away from it, as well as avoiding black/white dresses, because as I mentioned anime and cosplay made rip off cheap fake lolita rhats too short and wrong style and bad quality and not brand (and not lolita on qualities they lack). But you CAN actually wear a real regular lolita brand good quality dress that is black and white with frills... and I think they're fucking cute.

2 a lot of older pictures online exist of old school lolita. I love how many look "cringe" in their own way the same way old emo pictures do. Some of the styles of old lolita dresses like the intense long poofy sleeves or lace trims, are generally Not popular in current lolita fashion trends. But hey, even though they're "cringy" to modern popular opinion. They're still real lolita style - the old style. So wear em if you like them!

3 the lack of Intense Accessory Requirement. There's lots of old Fruit magazine photos of people in lolita, with just a headband/hairclip and socks/tights as their accessories. I fell in and out of wearing lolita, and when I came back into it in the last couple years it's very common now to see the expectation a lolita outfit should include: lolita dress or blouse/skirt and petticoat and dress shoes (the base outfit), legwear (like before), headpiece (like before). And ALSO necklace, arm wear (bracelets or wrist cuffs), purse (I imagine hopefully optional as always since ppl use different bags), hair style done up (again i hope optional and it's just Instagram is High Glam so people tend to wear wigs or intensely style hair more for Instagram photo shoots). The big change for me though is the seemingly much higher expectation on jewelry accessories and Fancy Legwear and mandatory arm wear and some people thinking the outfit is incomplete without them. The lolita style to my knowledge started as base outfit (dress or blouse and skirt, petticoat, all in appropriate lolita shape and length) with some leg wear usually (though occasionally ppl just wear shoes) and some hairpiece (usually a bow or headband but I've seen just a hairclip or barrettes before).

I am assuming the rise in more expectations of accessories comes from: over the top styles currently being what's most popular (and yes like Decora fashion, OTT styling generally expects much more accesorizing), sweet style being currently what's most popular (heavy on patterns so in personal opinion I assume that means one may need to accessorize more or be more dramatic with say Patterned tights to get attention on elements of the outfit outside of the main piece).

On the other hand I've seen more leniency on jumper dresses without undershirts (especially chinese lolita brand dresses some of which are designed specifically to just be worn as straps without undershirts), which I think is nice because in old school lolita dresses were sometimes worn this way. I'd also like to hope in reality lolita fashion worn in person is for the peoples personal happiness and preference, versus online like Instagram where yeah people tend to dress up the Most as public eye is on them.

I just think of Kamikaze Girls lol and how I wear as few accessories as her. Now I get mine is out of laziness, and I hate the feel of so many things on my body. But I grew up wanting THAT look, not the OTT look.

And then I guess semi related? If you're into old school lolita styles (and in particular gothic lolita), I really can't recommend Atelier Pierrot enough. First of all, they have a plus size line they carry that is AMAZING. It's genuinely plus size, I've bought 3 dresses and 1 skirt from this line and love them. The plus size have open free waists and then use a tie around the waist so you can tie it as tight or loosely as your waist needs, and the overall dress shape retains the cute lolita look. The free waist means if like me you jump 20 lbs back and forth, the dresses are guaranteed to fit ans look nice even when weight changes. Also the waist can be loosened easily when bloated or in pain while still looking form fitting (which is great for my ibs lol and makes them the MOST comfortable lolita dresses I have), they're very thin lightweight good quality cotton so they can be worn in the heat or colder without feeling like you're suffocating. Buy based on the free waist size measurements when picking items. Atelier Pierrot also carries Marble which keeps a lot of classic solid color with frills kind of looks, has some plus size (but really CHECK MEASUREMENTS because marble runs very tight... I tend to buy bigger sizes Than I think I'll need). Atelier Pierrot also has an English language option on site, and international shipping options. It's my favorite lolita brand. I also really like the gothic lolita look most, and Atelier Pierrot and Marble are great for that.

Otherwise yeah I'm basic, I get bodyline stuff, because it's sturdy and true to size (though sometimes youll want to buy a size up) and has plus size items that will fit me. sometimes.

GUIDE TO LOLITA VS HIME GYARU

I’m going to break down the differences of Sweet+Old school Lolita and Hime Gyaru for any J-fashion enthusiasts In this post.

At first glance these styles can look very similar with the joint goal of looking like a feminine “aristo doll” in rebellion of social norms of conformity when it comes to getting dressed but appearance wise they are different.

( I’m only going to talk about the visual differences here but there are other great sources for history )

Silhouette —

Lolita: What makes Lolita fashion so recognisable is the cupcake silhouette of the petticoat underneath the skirt, how the skirt has lots of volume at the top and stops 1/3 down leaving the the rest of the skirt’s curve to slow down.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru dresses and blouses do not have petticoats or if they do they are thin and flat. Because of the babydoll style of the dresses they have a more loose fit.

Colours —

Lolita: In Sweet styles the colour palette of most coords are pastels with pink, blue, yellow, purple and some green, Old school has more bold colours with darker reds, greens, pinks, whites, blacks and blues but with white accents with lace.

Hime Gyaru: Colour palettes are relatively the same for every Hime Gyaru coord with cold pinks and white with occasional accents of black.

Modesty—

Lolita: Most Lolitas wear a blouse underneath their dresses but in summertime some Lolitas wear their dresses with out a blouse. Their skirts tend to be above knee height and will wear knee or thigh high socks or patterned tights.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru tends to show more of the shoulders because of low necklines. The skirt normally reaches its end before the end of the hand and socks normally aren’t prevalent in Hime Gyaru fashion.

Prints —

Lolita: With Sweet Lolita prints you can find florals, animals, food, drinks and sometimes buildings. With Old school you can find prints like plaid and tartan. It is important to note that it’s mainly split down the middle with Lolita dresses having prints or being plain.

Hime Gyaru: Almost every Hime Gyaru dress will have a floral print ( this being roses ).

Misc —

Lolita: While some Lolita’s wear colourful wigs it isn’t needed for a Lolita coord. Makeup can vary from rather subtle to pink blush and gloss.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru is known for their dirty blonde Goldilocks wigs. Will commonly sport a fake tan although it may not be as dark as other Gyaru sub styles. Lipstick and blush is a light cold pink and they wear large false eyelashes. Long acrylic nails are a must.

Please note that there are exceptions to all of these and there are no rules to these styles and the most important thing is having fun! :))

You could do a post about Yui and her outfits when she was still living with her father in the church (along with some headcanons)? It's canon that Yui had a rather austere and humble life, so I'm guessing her clothes were always used or second hand.

It's longer than I expected-

Fashion Headcanon - a Yui Komori lookbook

Humble coquette meets the church girl roaming in a forest full of violets.

-Her colour palette is soft. So, so soft.

-Beige, white, pale pink, baby blue mixed with bits of faded navy blue and brown.

-Loves plaid pattern or those very delicate floral designs on clothes, colours slightly washed out, making everything cohesive.

-Doesn't mind vibrant colours in general. She finds beauty in many, many things but she knows that jewel shades will look garnish on her.

-Yui prefers when her clothes aren't too tight around her chest. Her tops are generally puff sleeved, off-shoulder with ruffles on the neckline to blur the shape of her torso.

-That, even before those fuckers would make her self-conscious about her chest. Pricks.

-When wearing tank tops or t-shirts, she would wear a cardigan or a wrap-up top that has subtle strips of white lace at the end of its sleeves.

-She's simply more confortable with showing her legs or her shoulders. For instance, she loves how her pale curls fall and brush the line of her shoulders. (but the diaboys too😔)

-Knitted mittens, square necklines, lacy lolita socks, vintage chiffon blouse embedded with little flowers, myosotis, daisies, stars of Bethlehem.

-She knows how to sew and to mend her clothes when it's needed. She is cautious with her belongings though.

-Wears second-hand clothes. Because life at the church was obviously more austere and Yui grew without the materialistic need to buy and own stuff just to see it piled up in her closet. Plus, she never wanted to appear spoiled rotten or anything.

-But she likes second hand clothes also because the fabric is soft. It's comforting for her to know that the clothes she owns now, had a life before.

-These grandma blouses with small embroidered details on the sleeves or on the collar ? Stan.

-Second hand fashion allowed her to explore a different sense of fashion - to create outfits that looked good on her and not trying to look like models in magazines. So you can find a sweet blending of reminiscent 2000s and 60s fashion in the way she dresses.

-Keeps her outfits simple and practical all in all, because she's known for being quite active.

-She cooks, cleans, helps the nuns in the garden or during charitable works.

-Therefore, she would never wear heels too high, skirts too long or too short.

-When going out to do some groceries, she always ends up looking at some shops, as there is something soothing for her in watching all these different clothes and shoes displayed behind the window. She doesn't buy anything, but she envies just a little bit the groups of girls who enter these shops, giggling and ready to buy something nice.

-No jeans or leather jackets like the girls of her age. Her father didn't allow her to wear those - he never even bought her clothes.

-Well. Not never never, but until very late, Seiji would only gift her books, stationary supplies, some tea...but never clothes, makeup or jewellery. This, combined with a certain solitude and the absence of a feminine figure in her life, Yui didn't have much choice but to observe a lot. She wanted to care about her appearance. She didn't know how at first.

-Interestingly, books and art influenced her style. Without even realising it, Yui would become the modern version of spring faerie, living a peaceful life in rhythm with the bell and the services.

-Spends hours making jewellery.

-The floral hair pins and the matching necklace? Her doing.

-She is crafty and loves doing activities that require patience and creativity, pearls glistening under the sun, tinkering with little hearts and stars. Nothing complicated. Just what she needs to give that graceful faerie twist to her outfit.

-She works like this, at her vanity or on a bench outside, in front of the garden for hours. Sewing or crafting the most precious details that no one except her will notice. She works until her eyes are tired and the tea remaining at the bottom of her cup is cold. But it is during time like this, that she feels the most a peace. The happiest.

I was wondering how I can make my style more classic coquette? I have red vintage heart-shaped glasses, matching red lipstick, and cherry earrings, but I don’t really know how to style them as far as outfits or shoes. Tysm for your time!

to start off look for inspo! i recommend lolita 1997 as well as search 1940s sewing patterns as lots of the clothes they wore are what we wear now

gingham will be your best friend, whether its red, yellow or blue. Look for gingham dresses as they'll be perfect casual items that you can pair with your makeup/accessories. Check bonnechance, forever21, tjmaxx, marshalls, poshmark, mercari etc especially during the spring as they are going on sale

instead of ruffle denim skirts look for aline denim and chambray skirts as that is more in line w the classic coquette look. also look for white and pink aline skirts.

for shorts look for sailor shorts and any a line shorts. you can even look for matching sets as well in gingham, seersucker (another great to look for seersucker dresses), and floral patterns! you can even support small businesses on etsy and commission custom matching sets. it's a little more pricey but it has the double benefit of getting exactly what you want and it gives smaller designers more exposure and income!

skirts are also simple they can be plaid, solid colors, floral etc

for patterns in general fruits like lemons, strawberries, cherries, gingham, polka dots and sailor stripes are great to look for.

for tops look for all the above patterns mentioned. but also you can look for vintage style bustier tops, halter tops (much like the ones dolores wore in lolita 97) and bardot tops. they don't have to be cropped if you dont want and its actually quite easy to find non cropped options! little details like lace trim and lettuce hems are also super cute. you can even make a nod to the tomboyish aspect of classic coquette with baseball/ringer tees and vintage graphic tees,

for dresses look for fabrics like cotton or linen as it fits the weather and style more. floral maxi dresses and even halter dresses.

for shoes, keep it super simple with classic sneakers (i loke skechers roadies, pumas and converse), saddle shoes and mary janes. saddle shoes are a great medium btwn sneakers and mary janes as theyre casual enough to be worn every day and add a little more flair to an outfit. i also 1000000000% reccomend cork wedge sandals!

other accessories are baseball caps, oversized flannels, varsity jackets, collegiate sweaters, bobby socks, socks with lace trims, hair ribbons ets

this style is also easily transferable to cooler weather contrary to popular belief. Keep sheer tights in black, white and nude (as in your skin tone not the generic nude) and layer them with thicker tights. make sure you have a good quality coat if needed but especially vintage style pea coats much like the one dolores wears, swap out the crop tops for cozy sweaters and long sleeves and nice boots! im not a big ugg girl but if you live in a super cold area like i used to, a little tip is to keep ur cute shoes in ur bookbag/locker and change into them! dresses line pinafores can be worn year round depending on the fabric (cotton/linen for summer/spring and wool for fall/winter)

last summer i spent my days lazing around the park, reading lolita, the virgin suicides and science books on the grass, had a perfect little hair cut that made me look like a fairy, wore cool sunglasses and spent hours in record shops and thrift shops just looking at things and listening to music. i wore babydoll dresses, mary janes, jean short shorts and plaid skirts and tops. I spent all day in the city far away from my small town doing fun things and it was the perfect summer. this year i plan on doing the same, much longer hair now, slightly different style and new music alongside my old favourites. ❤️🤍❤️🤍

Out of nowhere lol: atelier pierrot is one of my favorite lolita fashion brands and maybe worth checking out if you like gothic lolita, or some of the old school lolita look in terms of simpler colors/less patterns/more plaids/more frills. Atelier pierrot ships overseas so you can purchase it from their site instead of a reseller, the prices vary and during sales is a good time to check out. They carry a few gothic lolita brands (I like marble, atelier pierrot, and moi meme moite).

And for plus size specifically they have a Physical Drop line that I love. Personally I love every physical drop piece they've got ToT. I have 4 pieces from that line... the free waist is fairly generous (as in I think American XL fits it easily and comfortably, American 2XL would probably fit it as well, and if you like me often find yourself unable to fit lolita brand sizing or needing to buy like the 2XL-4XL on bodyline, the physical drop line is such a relief tbh) then you control the tightness of the waist with a tie bow. I really personally like the way the free waist was designed because like with my health situation sometimes I bloat 10 or more pounds within a day, or my abdomen hurts a lot, and being able to control how loose a dress feels immediately is really nice. If I'm having a bad health day I can still wear my physical drop pieces without pain or discomfort. Whereas a lot of my other lolita dresses are pretty unforgiving and only have about 1-2 inches maximum give room if I'm in pain (and usually the give is more like 0.5 an inch on most of them). For comfort reasons this line is my favorite line period of any fashion I've gotten... it's nice to be both styled cute the way I wanted and comfortable ToT also an FYI on the physical drop pieces, they're all made of thin breathable cotton and I love that about them. The quality feels amazing, and because of the thinness of the material I wasn't too hot wearing them in the summer. They're like my favorite dress clothes/professional clothes for work hands down. The sleeves also have breathing room if you have big arms like me, my problem with a lot of lolita brands is I usually can't even buy long sleeves (I have to get jsks usually) because if the arms aren't loose elastic cuffs with looser very roomy sleeve sections then my arms won't fit through them. So most of my stuff from other brands is jsks with straps.

The whole look of the pieces also hits the kind of lolita look with frills on the sleeves and solid color/plaid patterns that looks more like the kind of lolita dresses that got me into it in the first place. Over the top sweet lolita fashion is super popular right now (and I get why, it's very cool) but like my tastes are not big on accessories and many patterns to work on coordinating together. Also I personally tend to use some of my lolita fashion pieces also for pieces of work outfits, or with vintage clothes i have, when I'm just making fun outfits not particularly lolita styled ones, and the simple colors make it easier for me to coordinate with more of the rest of my closet.

Ahh this marble dress. I'm in love. I dont own this cause I feel with a coat I own I could make a similar look but. Man I remember playing The World Ends With You and wanting to get the lolita brand clothes in the game that reminded me of this kind of look, and that's what I was really into honestly style wise

OOOH this is a fun ask. I don't know whether you mean in their canon forms or as humans so I'm going with general vibes rather than specifics.

Honestly so much of this is up to individual tastes that I don't feel right ranking them. I put the worst-dressed at the end, but the others I think you could make arguments for in any direction.

Savathun. Inclined toward theatrically feminine styles, like if a drag queen was a woman. Stylistically at a juncture between "witch", "gothic" and "catholic-core": you know the girls who are all about cathedrals and stained glass and crowns and beseechingly eyeing the heavens for the aesthetic. Florence Welch but more. However, she understands the assignment and will dress accordingly. There's a picture of her for each point on the butch-femme chart.

Oryx. Nice. Classic. Understated pieces in quality materials. Think handcrafted cashmere sweaters and pima cotton shirts and wool trousers. More than one tailored three-piece suit. Likes hats and can pull them off. Cassocks and stoles for his religious duties, these are more ornate than his day-to-day wear given their ritual significance.

Xivu Arath. @planet4546b once described her as (paraphrased) a "varsity femme jock" type and that's always stuck with me. Very girly, very sporty, lives in athleisure when she isn't dressed specialized for activities e.g. fencing suits or soft armor for sword fighting practice. You know when she takes her helmet off she's going to have immaculate hair/makeup. (How?) Holds onto and still wears her varsity jacket. Likes leather; has at least one studded motorcycle jacket / pair of motorcycle boots / skirt in the material. Piercings.

Ir Yut. Elevated dark academic. Bit of a librarian vibe. Tailored pantsuits, blazers and pencil skirts and stockings. Plaid and jewel-tones. High heels always. Glasses.

Ir Anuk & Ir Halak. Elegant gothic lolita. Matching everything. Red & green colorways, but stylishly. Prominent musical theming, staffs and notes on their skirts. The silliest little pointy fascinator hats you ever did see, but they pull it off.

Nokris. GNC as fuck. Takes after Aunt Savathun. Classic goth with witchy vibes. So much eye makeup. No hive symbol goes un-blasphemed; whatever the hive equivalent of the "inverted cross necklace" is, this guy's wearing it.

Dul Incaru. 90s-adjacent whimsical gothic. Silk, velvet, long slip dresses, corsets, boleros/shrugs, chunky jewelry, stars and celestial patterns.

Crota. Styleless fail son. Goes to walmart in his fuzzy Cookie Monster pajama pants, Monster Energy shirt and lime green crocs. Ill-fitting suit for formal functions. So bad it almost circles around to being a fashion statement.
