Produced by Frank Peterson, the show starring Sarah, Placido Domingo, Riccardo Cocciante, and Helmut Lotti, was taped at the Vienna City Hall and broadcast on tv the previous year. The Vienna Symphony, conducted by Steven Mercurio accompanied the performers.

My introduction to La Traviata was the 1982 Franco Zeffirelli film with Teresa Stratas and Plácido Domingo, followed soon afterward by the 2000 live filmed version "on location" in Paris, with Eteri Gvazava and José Cura. Not too after that, I saw the same opera onstage in LA.

Thanks to Plácido Domingo, José Cura, and Rolando Villazón, in that order, I can't help but imagine Alfredo Germont as looking slightly Spanish or Latin American. I know it's irrational, but I can't help it.

But then, Alexandre Dumas fils based the character on himself, and he was 1/8th Afro-Carribbean, so maybe it really is fitting that I don't picture him as looking like an average white Frenchman.

Internationally-renowned opera singer Plácido Domingo is returning to Israel for a concert at Tel Aviv’s Menora Mivtachim Arena, on September 4.

The 12-time Grammy winner spent three years at the beginning of his career as an opera singer in the Israeli Opera, in the 1960s. The concert is touted as a celebration of the 60th anniversary of that collaboration, which he says helped him develop the necessary technique and voice to succeed in the largest opera houses in the world.

The production will feature the widely-acclaimed Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, led by Domingo’s good friend, American maestro Eugene Kohn.

«Ópera y fútbol: un mundial y tres tenores»

Roma, 7 julio de 1990, un día antes de la final del Mundial de fútbol. Las termas de Caracalla se convierten en el escenario de un evento único que transformará por completo la apreciación del género operístico. Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo y Josep Carreras, acompañados de la Orquesta de la Ópera de Roma y del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino dirigida por Zubin Mehta, se convierten en «Los tres tenores».

Ochocientos millones de espectadores fueron testigo en directo de cómo se forjaba la leyenda, un auténtico fenómeno musical que ha pasado a la historia como «el concierto del siglo». El recital se había concebido, con la excusa de la celebración de la Copa del Mundo, para recaudar fondos para la Fundación Josep Carreras contra la leucemia. Supuso, de hecho, el debut internacional del tenor catalán tras su recuperación del cáncer. Fue tal el éxito cosechado que la experiencia se repitió en los tres mundiales posteriores: actuaron en el Dodger Stadium de Los Ángeles (1994), en el Campo de Marte de París (1998) y en el Estado internacional de Yokohama (2002), hoy Estadio Nissan.

El repertorio no solo abarcaba grandes arias de ópera, como Nessun dorma o E lucevan le stelle, también canciones populares como los clásicos italianos O Sole Mio y Core N’gratto o las míticas Granada y Amapola, rescatando y celebrando composiciones que representaban a los tres cantantes. Actuaron en orden alfabético y por edad: primero Carreras, después Domingo y por último Pavarotti. A pesar de que lo ensayaron, el concierto tiene momentos gloriosos en los que los tres divos de la ópera se indican unos a otros cuándo entrar a cantar, con sus confusiones y sus instantes de complicidad, haciendo las delicias de una audiencia tan entregada como la que presenciaría la final entre Argentina-Alemania unas horas después. El penalti lo marcó Puccini cuando decidieron cantar juntos Nessum Dorma tras finalizar el programa, algo que no estaba en el guión. «Acabamos el programa y no teníamos más música. No sabíamos qué hacer y le dije a Luciano "¿te parece si cantamos Nessun Dorma los tres juntos?"», dijo Plácido Domingo en una entrevista. This comic opera centers around a big party everyone wants to attend.  There’s mistaken identities, elaborate schemes, and revenge.  Wouldn’t be an opera without revenge!  But there’s also reconciliation.

A classic for NYE.  And I love this version.  Its book was written by the spirit of Roscoe Arbuckle (everyone merrily breaks the fourth wall).  The entire third act has been lifted from Buster’s repertoire.
