'19th Century Spanish Murale of Glass Eyes' by D. Jose Fradera. Barcelona (1861)
A 19th century Spanish murale consisting of 150 hand-made eye models, each eye hand-made with blown glass eyeballs set in hand-formed and -painted terracotta eyelids, and brows. Eyes mounted together in neat rows labeled A-Y in the original velvet-lined 19th century Spanish shadowbox (36 x 34 x 5 inches), front window of box set off with gilt frame and opening on hinges to allow up-close inspection. Several eyes pierced by surgical tools. Original manuscript label in Spanish, dated 1861.
This arresting panel was commissioned by a Spanish professor of anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, depicting the various illnesses, diseases and deformities that can occur in the human eye, based upon the observations and work of the famous ophthalmologists Bourgery, Gimbernat, Scarpa, Magendie, Jacob, and Cruveilhier.
