it is quite frankly baffling to me that pippin isn’t universally regarded to be one of the best musicals of all time... imagine you’re a musical. you’ve got it all: solely bangers on the soundtrack (simple joys! on the right track! extraordinary!). you’ve got identity crises (many). you’ve got sex. you’ve got patricide. you’ve got LAYERS OF PERFORMANCE — the actors are playing actors who are playing the characters and yes of course all of that is important. you’ve got a protagonist who is borderline insufferable for a lot of the show and is almost always being given terrible advice by the other characters. there’s a SING-ALONG portion in most productions! you, as a show, are using and fucking with the medium of theatre to such a degree that by the time the audience reach the finale everything is so tangled that they might not fully understand it and how unsettling it is until they look back and it hits them and they have to sit down for a while. and still nobody else in my life cares about you? ….😔 how come?

god I love hobbits. sam and frodo are literally in the land of mordord. and not only are they in the land of mordor frodo was taken captive by the orcs and stripped of his clothes and whipped. not only that, frodo has now lost all hope and sam isn't doing well either. they have hardly slept, drank and eaten. and they still try to lighten up the mood whenever they can. God I LOVE hobbits

I have a lot of feelings about Pippin. Pippin, who was a child in the events of LotR, and all he wanted to do was help his friends go on a fun adventure and save the world. And isn't that what every child wants? The excitement, the perception that saving the world is a glamorous, exciting thing, like going camping with your friends without your parents for the first time.
And then reality hits. And this child is left with a bunch of adults of strange cultures who he doesn't know all that well, and his cousin is off with his best friend and is probably going to die, and his other cousin and best friend is serious all the time and then even he is taken from him, and he almost dies, and then Pippin himself almost dies, and this child comes home from war desperate to find his peaceful home just as he left it.
Except war has found his home as well, and he can't stop fighting yet. A child leaves home, becomes a soldier, and then can't escape the war before it follows him home. Honestly, I don't think the war ever stopped following Pippin. He was a child soldier. That doesn't just leave.

I’m really curious what the opinions on this one are cause I don’t think there’s really an official answer.
