“A difficult piece to complete.

When my dear friend, mentor (and art-dad) the great Neal Adams passed away, he was in the middle of a number of commissions, including this large 20x30 painting featuring Batman, Talia and Ra’s al Ghul.

His daughter Kris reached out to me to ask if I might consider inking the areas that were left in pencil so Zeea Adams could take it and run with the final coloring.

I said of course. Zeea has been doing amazing work, finishing up colors on other commissions by Neal.

Kris and I discussed it a bit more. I asked her -and Marilyn -if I might possibly finish the piece on my own, which would result in a painting that would be a blend of our styles, a very unusual collaborative piece; 'unusual' for all the reasons everyone who knows the history of Neal's work and mine would understand.

To say this is a tall order is an understatement. Comics readers know Neal was a huge influence on my early work; I doubt I'd have a career were it not for him. Still, over the years our styles diverged greatly. So returning- especially under such sad circumstances- to do a collaboration with him-especially one in pencils, inks, AND color and paint, was something I felt compelled to do.... and boy was I nervous.

All I can say is, I hope and pray Neal finds my efforts acceptable. I really love him and miss him.”
