Going to put on my Tumblr Parent Pants™️ for a second and out myself by saying I play an ungodly amount of Candy Crush, and recently I’ve been seeing an ad that I wanted to talk about but kind of just passed it off until I saw this ad on tumblr as well recently, so I just want to say: You Are Not Making Thousands Of Dollars Off A Stupid Little Game App. And I’m sure MOST of you are saying “nO sHiT pUnK” but listen if you are, then this post is NOT for you. I’d like to think that my mom taught me a decent amount of life lessons including this one but I still know what it’s like to feel like you grew up as a “sheltered child” so I’m passing this message onto anyone whose parents DIDN’T teach them this lesson: If a game was REALLY giving out THOUSANDS of dollars for FREE, they would NOT be putting THIS MUCH EFFORT into ADVERTISING because you would ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT because that shit would have gone VIRAL. And if you’re thinking to yourself “oh, yeah, this post is definitely for me”: DON’T feel stupid. Look, we all fall for scams at least once in our life, whether it be a scam like this or just a phony relationship or whatever. Falling for a scam does NOT make you stupid. We live and we learn and we pass the knowledge on to those who come after us, hopefully with love. You’re not stupid.

The FTC announced last week that it would host a competition challenging private citizens to find solutions to protect people from AI-generated phone scams. The scams can use AI to clone a loved one’s voice, making it sound like they’re in trouble and tricking unsuspecting people into coughing up big bucks. The FTC is offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who can innovate a solution, essentially leveraging the same AI technology to protect consumers, Maxson said. Applications will open in January. The agency previously held similar crowdsourcing competitions to help combat robocalls.

How to Know if it's Really the IRS Contacting You?
Know IRS contacts protocols for mail, calls, visits to avoid scams demanding payment or making threats. Report suspicious communications claiming to be tax authority.
The IRS contacts taxpayers in various ways, including by phone, mail, and in-person visits. However, scammers also often impersonate the IRS to try to get money or personal information from victims. It’s important for taxpayers to understand how the real IRS operates so they can identify any suspicious communications that may be IRS imposters. The IRS Primarily Uses Mail for Legitimate…

Z Morning Zoo phone scams
Do any of you remember the "AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!" meme from a long time ago?
youtube
youtube
Well for those who don't know the backstory of that meme, it came from a prank call from the radio show, Z Morning Zoo on Z104. All thanks to a man named Donny who wanted to prank his WWE/Pay-per view hating wife Marie. (No relation to the old 70's talk show duo of the same name).
youtube
Donny's request goes as follows: "A couple weeks ago, I ordered WWE Wrestling Pay-per view Survivor Series-" (The host said "Superslam" instead of Summerslam which I thought was a bit weird.) "-And my wife flipped! She came into the room and yelled at me and said, "CHANGE IT! I'm missing my shows!" And I said "what shows?" She said, "Revenge" and "Homelander". Then I said, I can't change it! She said, "Why not?" And I said, "It's pay-per view!" At that point, she preceded to yell at me for the next hour about ordering pay-per view wrestling on our television. I tried to explain to her how kick-ass WWE wrestling is, she didn't get the picture, maybe a phone scam would help."
And then, Donny sealed John Cena's career into memeatory. And as for his wife Marie, she deserved it.
As for the call, it's a masterpiece and one of the show's best prank calls. It's far more interesting than all the prank calls I've heard in my life. The host, posing as a WWE tele-advertiser. The constant use of John Cena. A "spit-swapping makeout match". And John Cena's theme "The Time Is Now" just being in the background was just the icing on the cake.
Now, since revisiting the call, I thought about looking at the other calls this show had. And some of them didn't disappoint! They're not better than the WWE Superslam phone scam (oh fuck me, I rhymed.) obviously and objectively. Here are some of my favorites right now.
youtube
This one's victim was sooo fucking gullible on not recognizing the Willy Wonka Gene Wilder samples.
youtube
Obviously this one's victim doesn't enjoy the new generation of music.
youtube
"Oh god, he's from New York" - me when I realized the victim's accent before laughing at his yelling on the other line.

I got a life hack for those auto-dialer spam phone calls from a cousin and it works! Answer the phone with "[Your name] speaking, how can I help you?" Scammers hang right up, not wasting your time and potentially flagging your number as a business line. They don't want to call people at work or the self-employed, they want easy marks. If it is a legitimate call or a political survey they might ask if they have the right number, but that's easily sorted. No need to explain, it's a legitimate way to answer the phone and many will assume you answer phones like that at work all day. I know I've answered my own phone as if I was still at work once or twice.

New phone scam?
I've gotten three texts supposedly sent to a woman named Ellen about going to yoga.
I was nice to the first one, suggested the sender check the number, and even said, "Have fun at yoga", they said, "Oh, you seem like a nice guy, god bless you. My name is Emily. Wanna be friends?"
My reply: "I'm an atheist, I'm not single, and I'm not a very social animal. Good day."
The next two just got blocked

Phone scammers have finally figured out that I, a millennial, will not answer the phone when it rings, so they've started sending spam texts instead.
Joke's on them though because I don't answer texts either.
