Spoiler-free Ghostbusters Back in Town: Issue 1 Review:
Tumblr media
Taking place a year and a half after Ghostbusters Afterlife, this mini series bridges the gap between the previous film and Frozen Empire. We follow the Spenglers as they move to the Firehouse and adjust to life in New York.
Highlights include:
Soft, cute art style! Props to Blue Delliquanti, Mildred Louis, and Cris Peter. I really like the simple drawings for the human characters, while the ghosts still look appropriately gnarly. A vast improvement over the IDW style, in my opinion. (No offense to Dan Schoening, I'm sure he's a wonderful fellow, but some of his stylistic choices were... questionable.) -
Very small acknowledgement towards the Ghostbusters reputation in New York, for anyone who's interested in that. -
More interactions between the Spenglers and insight into their lives that the movies have sorely lacked. I understand a movie has only so much runtime, but that's all the more reason why spinoff material like this is important! We get to see the family talking to each other, along with Phoebe and Trevor adapting to their new schools (less than successfully). The brief sibling moment after is cute. -
In addition to the Spenglers, we get a little bit of dialogue between Phoebe and Podcast, and Trevor and Lucky via texts. They miss each other! Besides them, we also see some more with Janine and Winston. We learn a little bit more of how they're helping the Spenglers and some more of Winston's influence around the city. There's also a small glimpse of a certain bookstore owner at the end! -
Little details in the background and nods to other films, new and old. You'll be able to spot them easily if you just look close. -
Funny dialogue, nothing gut-busting but it did put a smile on my face. The characters inform the comedy and it works well. There's a few lines in here that made me wonder how no one thought to include jokes like them in GB material before! -
Great use of foreshadowing throughout the comic to hint at the coming threat. The theme is insects, which is a clever choice considering the Ghostbusters share plenty of similarities with exterminators. There appears to be a villain controlling them and using this to drive the family apart. We already see some arguments between the Spenglers as they struggle to capture the big creature at the end of the comic. A wicked strategy, how will it play out? Overall, I enjoyed this! It's a simple story, but it's only the beginning, and already offers us a lot that the movies couldn't. I highly recommend to any fans of the modern GB era!

i want phoebe and fern to interact SO BAD!!! im a flinn shipper and im curious to see phoebe and ferns friendship, because obviously romance would be annoying because fern would quite litterally die- but i wanna see how they interact how curious FP is about him how nervous fern is around her because shes a fire hazard but also so pretty and amazing and bold she is. how much of a leader she is. from not knowing who she was outside of the lantern to becoming the king. how he would relate to being trapped and how they would BOND over different aspects of it. ggrraah im brainrotting so hard because FP and him have only interacted ONCE im dying over here i love them so much

I watched Ghostbusters: Afterlife this weekend, and I actually cried because I had never seen a character in media that I related to as much as Phoebe. I've seen a lot of media with autistic characters, but a lot of the time it was either written poorly by someone who doesn't know much about autism or didn't match the way I experienced being autistic, but Phoebe was just like me and it made me so ridiculously happy

I've seen a common complaint that the main problem with Frozen Empire is the cast is too big, which means each character can't get enough screen time (except Phoebe, being the protagonist). I agree with this!
What I don't necessarily agree with is that the focus should be kept on the Spenglers from now on. Don't get me wrong, the Spengler family is important and I'd like to see more of their interactions, but Afterlife seemed to be setting up Phoebe, Trevor, Podcast, and Lucky as the new main four to parallel the OGs. Somewhere that got lost in the shuffle of Frozen Empire's huge cast and the message about family.
I'm glad we got that message, but I hope that we can return to the four teens as the main team for future stories. I mean, I've been calling them "The Summerville Squad" for the past 3 years! It would feel weird if we abandoned that going forward.

my whole life i felt like i was too old for my time.
at ten my town burned into ashes and i stood in front of it in my wool coat and holding a shard of my dead grandmother's ceramic christmas tree.
when i was eleven i wrote a three-part collection of trauma poems and watercolor portraits, but the portraits were never of me, but of the people i saw in the shadows that no one else could see.
twelve years old and i moved into an empty house. small. crowded. i met a girl. she was really beautiful in my eyes. but she was fifteen going on sixteen, too old for me. i did not know how i felt except good. i felt so safe with her. and i had an inkling she felt the same.
when i was thirteen the same girl broke my heart. i thought i had felt love for her, looking back now it was just the idea, the reverie of love. but part of it was real. she would hold me close when the curtain fell, and i painted her on the largest canvas in my possession. i wrote her my longest work yet, of adoration, of admiration. she showed me music that threw my world up in flames and threw it back down to burn my lips to black. but she told me she couldn't do it. she couldn't make this work because she didn't care about me all that much. and it was an event i should have seen coming. but i was thirteen. i was naive. i was not suited to be in a loving relationship with a sixteen year-old. and that was the only truth i couldn't see.
fourteen and i watched call me by your name for the first time. listened to sufjan stevens all day long, and phoebe bridgers at night. sad lesbian music. heartbreak hangover. i wanted to keep talking to the girl i loved but it was so hard to keep a safe distance while doing so. and so, that spring before she turned seventeen, i wrote her two letters one month apart. and instead of going back to our used-to-be-normal, she told me to fuck off and never speak to her again. her name was evie.
when i turned fifteen, i was a little happier. i wanted that elio and oliver type of love. not, the elio at the end of the film type. on the phone, crying, whispering her name over and over and over again. i met someone else just as my first "love" and i began to be on better terms again. but this new girl was straight as a board, and she was one of my best friends. and i don't know how it ended with her, though i really loved her, a true love, not just an idea. because when we graduated, i missed my opportunity to tell her how i really felt for her. but then there was a monday night in october when evie called me "babe." and i didn't know how to respond. because she was the one who cut things off with me, so i just smiled and resisted the urge to scream or cry or both all at the same time. it wasn't the place. it wasn't the right time either. and i didn't love her anymore, if i ever did at all. it really felt ... over.
and as father sufjan said once, blessed be the mystery of love.
