Investigating the contribution of gamma-ray blazar flares to neutrino flux
Blazars belong to the family of active galactic nuclei called quasars. What differentiates them from quasars is that the flares ejected out of these active galactic nuclei are pointed toward the Earth. These flares contain high-energy cosmic rays which are released from the core of these galaxies as jets spanning many light years. Such cosmic rays can interact with photons to produce subatomic particles called neutrinos.
Gamma-ray flares from blazars are thought to be the primary events behind neutrino detection in the sky. In 2017, the South Pole neutrino detector “IceCube” detected a high-energy neutrino event whose timings and positioning in the night sky coincided with the flare of a blazar called TXS 0506+056. Some scientists suggest that there could be a population of blazars whose flares are accompanied by high-energy neutrino emission. However, the relationship between blazar flaring activity and neutrino flux is yet to be properly understood.
In this regard, an international research team, led by Professor Kenji Yoshida from the Department of Electronic Information Systems at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan, has recently performed a comprehensive statistical analysis to understand the contribution of gamma-ray flares to neutrino emission. The team included Maria Petropoulou from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Kohta Murase from The Pennsylvania State University, and Foteini Oikonomou from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Their paper was published in Volume 954, Number 2 of The Astrophysical Journal on September 6, 2023.
The researchers analyzed 145 blazars, 144 of them taken from the Fermi Large Area Telescope Monitored Source List and including TXS 0506+056, in this study. They first calculated a weekly average of the gamma-ray flux of the blazars and plotted their light curves. The team then derived the flare duty cycle (fraction of time spent in flaring state) and the corresponding energy fraction from these curves using a Bayesian blocks algorithm, a statistical method used to identify changes in a time series.
“We find that blazars with lower flare duty cycles and energy fractions are more numerous among our sample. Their flare duty cycles and energy fractions represent power law-like distributions, correlating strongly with each other. We found a significant difference between blazar subclasses for the flare duty cycles at the 5% significant level,” says Prof. Yoshida, highlighting the major results of their analysis.
The researchers evaluated the neutrino energy flux of each gamma-ray flare, using a general scaling relation for the neutrino and gamma-ray luminosities with a power law’s weighting exponent of 1.0–2.0, normalized to the quiescent gamma-ray or X-ray flux of each blazar. They also found that the gamma-ray flare distribution indicates that blazar neutrino emission may be dominated by flares for the weighting exponent >1.5. Furthermore, by comparing their neutrino predictions for each blazar for one-week and 10-year periods to the time-integrated IceCube sensitivity, the team placed upper limits on the contributions of the flares to the isotropic diffuse neutrino flux.
Prof. Yoshida remarks: “We hope that this study helps improve our understanding of the contribution of blazars to astrophysical neutrinos. Application of the present method to further observations might have the potential to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the origin of astrophysical neutrinos.”

Do you know somewhere where I can learn more accurate stuff about Hyacinthus? I’m trying to research abt him but idk where to start
Theoi.com is the most popular suggestion, where you can search for ancient literature about Hyacinthus and other figures.
I also have a recommendation that others haven't mentioned yet, but you should only consider it when you are more familiar with Greek mythology:
Reading analysis/research papers about Hyacinthus, especially the ones written by Greek scholars.
I know long academic essays are hard to digest (can relate as a uni student), but they can be a Wonderland for people who fell into the Rabbit Hole. It's fun to learn about the ancient practices of Hyacinthus' worship and various interpretations of his myth made by experts.
Here are some works I'm currently reading about Hyacinthus. You can try them out if you're interested.

Search Party of Four
"Ioanna Myrou was last seen in the evening of October 5th, as she left the event venue to look for her friend according to eye-witnesses. No signs of her whereabouts have been found so far"
The news were clear, and the police narrative alligned as well, even if they were reluctant to pursue the case further. But the girls something was very wrong about the case.
Ioanna Myrou was last seen in the evening of October 5th, covered in wounds that still bled, presumably running from something, in the back of a storage room near the event venue. Dimitra is sure she saw her. She was certain that even if for a moment she saw her best friend look at her terrified. But before she could confirm it she was dragged away by her new found friends who were running away from angry security guards. "But we were just having fun"
With the police's reluctance to find their friend, Dimitra, Lucy, Rosa and Kassandra, as the last witnesses of the disappearence, are forced to investigate the truth of what happened on that fateful evening of October 5th. Little did they know they would be stumbling upon a conspiracy much bigger than what they could imagine.
================================================
Search Party of Four is one of my original works, taking place in a small coastal city in Greece, in an urban fantasy setting. How exactly? Well you'd have to find out along with our protagonists. The story should be a short one taking place within a month chronologically in universe. A mystery with slice of life elements as we get to learn things about each girl's life and interpersonal conflicts.
Kassandra Petropoulou
Tumblr media
The heir in line of the Petropoulos group, a conglomerate that owns multiple businesses throughout the country. She grew up pretty sheltered mostly by the employees at the family's estate. Despite her seemingly closed off attitude she has the undeniable charisma to draw people in. However with their interest appearing mostly superficial she has grown distrustful.
Lucy (Lukia) Glarou
Tumblr media
Born and raised in the US, her family had to move to her father's family home back in Greece after one disaster after the other forced them to go bankrupt with no place to stay. Now she has to adjust in a completely different (and quite closed off) environment. Thanks to her very optimistic outlook, pushing her down is gonna be hard.
Roza (Rosalia) Lykidi
Tumblr media
"Dreaming is for those who can afford to do it" and according to Roza she does't have the means to do it. Leading a life of marginalisation, it's been filled with constant hardship. But even if she seems actively hostile towards most people, she is incredibly loyal, a ride-or-die person with tons of compassion for others. As adult-like as she wants to appear she is still a kid hurt by a cruel world around them.
Dimitra Lyritsa
Tumblr media
The most extraordinary thing about Dimitra is how ordinary she is. A walking second place medal. Her entire life she's been living in the massive shadow of her extraordinary family and the expectations placed upon her. But living in said shadow grants her an invisibility she finds quite comforting sometimes. And so she's learnt to move within that shadow. Because if you try to do better, failure means ridicule. Or worse.
Ioanna Myrou
Tumblr media
A social butterfly, beloved by both classmates and teachers alike, peers an adults. A personality oozing with charisma it feels like she can make friends with just about anyone. Which then brought the surprising reaction to her disappearance: everyone seemed sad but not too distraught about it. The only ones who really tried to do anything about it were her parents and her friend Dimitra.
Thank you for going through this post with me, I hope you stay around to see more of them and eventually their actual story (It should be about 30 chapters long? It's a short one, but still needs a lot of careful planning as all mystery stories go). Everything related to the story will be tagged as "search party of four" and "SPof4"

Love and Other Words
8/10 "I haven't been living without him. I've been merely surviving."
☆INFO☆ Get someone who loves you like Elliot and Macy love each other. When Macy was 10, her dad bought a vacation house after her Mom died of cancer due to her Mom's request. There, she becomes best friends with Elliot Petropoulous, where every weekend they spend time reading, talking, playing and growing inseparable. But something happens which drives them apart, causing them to not talk for years until they run into each other by chance 11 years later. Told through alternating timelines, it's revealed what really happened that drove them apart all those years ago. The question is, can they really get back together after learning the full truth?
💜REVIEW💜 I know it's basically winter right now, but this book transported me to lazy summer afternoons spent at a vacation house with my soulmate, even though that's never happened to me 💀. This book felt so immersive, since it really sucks you into the past lives of these characters living in that summer house with all those years spent pining over each other. The relationship between Elliot and Macy felt so deep, intimate, and special. They aren't only best friends or lovers, they're everything to each other. The best way to describe them is that they're soulmates and their bond is so beautiful and touching. I genuinely felt like I was intruding on something during some of the romantic scenes, even though these characters are literally words on paper 😀. I also appreciate how the MC's fiance wasn't a jerk, he was just an okay guy, and they weren't very into each other.
Now, though this book was great, I didn't completely fall in love with it like most people did, though it was still very good. There was also this scene towards the end that reveals why they separated for so long, and though it reveals everything, I feel like it could've been handled so much better, and it would've been nice if they handled what happened differently.
SPOLIERS BELOW
When it reveals what happened that drove them apart, it reveals Elliot slept with Emma since he thought it was Macy while he was very drunk. However, it is obvious that Emma raped him, since he had no clue what was going on and was drunk. He even mentions that he couldn't be intimate with a woman for years without breaking down, which heavly implies there was no consent in the act. This, however, was basically brushed to the side and barely ever talked about, which annoyed the hell out of me since it could've been a good way to talk about male sexual abuse. I have seen on Christina Lauren's Instagram account that they will touch on Elliot's sexual assault in the next book, which is good. However, I wish they would have addressed it more instead of brushing it aside.
Either way, this is the perfect book for people who hate winter and just want to get into the summer feeling early. It's me. I'm people.

Hyakinthos
Hyakinthos was a Spartan prince, most prominently known in Amyclae with a decent cult following. there are a couple of different people listed as being his parents, but the most popular is King Amyclus and Diomedes. if Amyclus was his father, that would also make Daphne, another of Apollo’s lovers, Hyakinthos’s sister. it seems like he would be quite simple, he has a relatively small story with one of the earliest written records from Hesiod. in this version there is no love rival, just an accident. written in the 7th century BC, it was merely one, albeit long, sentence.
”. . ((lacuna)) rich-tressed Diomede; and she bare Hyakinthos (Hyacinthus), the blameless one and strong . . ((lacuna)) whom, on a time Phoibos (Phoebus) [Apollon] himself slew unwittingly with a ruthless disk.”
however, the most famous version, and one that most will know, comes from Ovid’s Metamorphosis. written somewhere between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD, this sentence long story grew to be paragraphs long. in which Ovid describes the love Apollo and Hyakinthos have for each other — which was the ultimate demise for the young prince. with parts of it coming from the perspective of a mourning Apollo, Ovid writes how Hyakinthos was turned into a flower with “ai, ai” written on the petals to express Apollo’s sadness. and the version that we all have come to know including betrayal and jealous rage from Zephyros (the West Wind), is hinted at in Pausanias’ “Description of Greece”.
”[In the temple of Apollon at Amyklai (Amyclae) Nikias (Nicias) [painter fl. c. 320 B.C.], son of Nikomedes, has painted him [Hyakinthos (Hyacinthus)] in the very prime of youthful beauty, hinting at the love of Apollon for Hyakinthos of which legend tells . . . As for Zephyros (the West Wind), how Apollon unintentionally killed Hyakinthos, and the story of the flower, we must be content with the legends, although perhaps they are not true history.”
despite this seemingly clear-cut story, there’s a lot more than meets the eye with Hyakinthos. according to many historians the -nth part of his name is pre-Hellenic and comes from the Mycenaean era. another word like that would be Corinth — a pre-Greek polis that was destroyed and rebuilt. this leads many to believe that Hyakinthos was around BEFORE Apollo. he would have been a chthonic vegetation god — almost like the male equivalent to Persephone. this leads to a few different theories, but before I get to that, let me tell you the story of Hyakinthos as told by Ovid and Lucian’s “Dialogues of the Gods”. ═══════════════════════════
⊰ The Myth ⊱
Hyakinthos was a beautiful Spartan prince. he had many lovers, but the one that had eventually won his heart was Apollo. the god taught beautiful long-haired Hyakinthos how to play the lyre, how to use a bow and arrows, a little bit on prophecies, and gave him a swan chariot. the two were incredibly in love, but sadly, there was someone who didn’t like that. Zephyros, the west wind, was jealous for he too loved Hyakinthos. he had tried to woo him but it really was no match for Apollo. he watched the two men play again and again until he had eventually had enough of it. he ultimately created one of the most tragic love stories. like most days, Apollo and Hyakinthos were together, playing around and having mild competitions throwing a discus. Apollo wanted to show off for Hyakinthos so he could see just what a god could do. he threw a discus high into the air, clearing the clouds away and it disappeared into the sky. Hyakinthos wanted to impress his lover as well, so he chased after the discus laughing. Zephyros in a fit of rage at the two men enjoying themselves changed the course of the discus. as it came to land, the force was so strong that it bounced off the ground and smashed into Hyakinthos’s face. Apollo ran to his lover and tried every kind of medicine and healing he could think of. he even placed ambrosia on his lover’s lips but blood flowed freely from the wound. there was no way for him to stop a wound of Fate. in his despair, he turned Hyakinthos into a flower, but seeing that wasn’t good enough, he wrote his grief upon the petals. ═══════════════════════════
⊰ Symbolism From The Myth ⊱
Taking A Temple as mentioned before, it’s very likely that Hyakinthos was an older deity from the pre-hellenic period. something that many Greek writers did, was create a myth of how a deity began their worship in a specific place. we know the temple that Apollo was worshipped at in Amyclae was older than when his worship would have started. one theory behind this myth then, is how Apollo came to be worshipped over Hyakinthos at the temple and area; by killing the previous deity. it sounds sad, but it’s actually happened several times, and even with Apollo specifically. the most famous example I can think of would be at Delphi. originally the temple was in honor of the titan Gaia. Apollo came in valiantly and killed the Python (which is what gives Apollo’s priestesses their name) and inevitably took the temple over with his worship. what this doesn’t account for, is the fact Hyakinthos is still worshipped at the temple heavily, his and Apollo’s worship having mingled and being near inseparable. it is even said that upon his death and burial, Apollo said to give him (Hyakinthos) all offerings first. now, if you know a thing or two about Greek worship, the first portion of the offering was incredibly important, especially considering hero worship was probably closer to chthonic sacrifices in practice; though they were not considered to be ‘dead’. within my research so far, I have yet to find this happening somewhere else, but I will update this if I ever do. now all of this is unusual with the theory that this myth symbolizes one deity taking over. if that were the case, why continue to worship Hyakinthos? Duality some of you may not know this about me, but I am a sucker when it comes to duality, specifically with lovers. this myth may be a symbol for the growing season and harvest of the crops. while it may be a common motif, especially among the Greeks, I think it’s a sweet and somber story giving personification to an important aspect of Greek life. I also believe the duality is less about the exacts of what they rule over, but the way they were worshipped. the closest example I can think of also comes from Delphi with the duality between Apollo and Dionysos (who, shockingly enough, was the only other god historians believe was present during the Hyakinthia festival besides Apollo and Hyakinthos). as a hero, or simply for his chthonic aspect, the ritual and practice would have been far different than that for Apollo. while this isn’t exactly backed by anything I can find specific to duality, I personally feel a reason both Apollo and Hyakinthos were worshipped together in Amyclae is due to that duality between them. Hyakinthos would have been a chthonic deity probably for vegetation or agriculture, whereas Apollo here is a god of light (not the sun) representing life, health, and the ultimate grief. their worship in Amyclae was always together once Apollo was introduced (to some this hinted that they were possibly the same person representing a cycle, but most disagree with this theory). the duality is clearly a theme already for Apollo, and I think what happened at Delphi with Dionysos is the same for Amyclae and Hyakinthos. together they represent loss and mourning but also happiness and life — love. ═══════════════════════════
⊰ Hyakinthos Associations ⊱
okay, now that I have bored you all to death, let’s talk about some less heavy things. due to their worship being completely together, I would say that nearly anything related to Apollo can also be associated with Hyakinthos and vice versa. however, we love individuality in this house, so let’s talk about the things either associated with him through the various, limited texts we have and some UPG. Associations ➳ larkspurs/hyacinths ➳ swans ➳ bow and arrow ➳ summer! ➳ new spring growth ➳ chiton’s (they were offered to him by the women of Sparta) ➳ death ➳ rebirth/cycles ➳ chariot’s ➳ blood ➳ blue/purple/red colors ➳ discus (sorry) ➳ lavender ➳ lyre ➳ lapis lazuli ➳ amethyst ➳ black tourmaline ═══════════════════════════ Devotional Activities ➳ keeping a garden ➳ maybe even an indoor garden ➳ go to parks and feed the swans/birds ➳ archery ➳ sports ➳ making a chiton ➳ writing poems ➳ taking care of those around you ➳ growing larkspurs/hyacinths ➳ get a devotional journal ➳ create a playlist (sad songs for the most part) ➳ fall in love deeply ═══════════════════════════
⊰ Deity Or Divine Hero? ⊱
I don’t know if this question can be answered for a fact honestly. what we do know is that he was at least worshipped as a hero, that much can be said. anything further than that comes at a later time and from the outside perspective. a lot of ancient Greek writers didn’t write down certain things because they saw them as common knowledge. this doesn’t help us looking back now. what we can say, is that some of the offerings given to him were not common with hero worship and would have been reserved for the gods. this is according to Angeliki Petropoulou, a professor in ancient greek studies/religion, and the author of “Hyakinthos and Apollo of Amyklai: Identities and Cults. A Reconsideration of the Written Evidence” pages 153-161. Within this, she makes the argument that Hyakinthos has gone through ‘apotheosis’. this is the action of a mortal, usually a hero, becoming a god. note: ‘βουθυσία’ is a traditional oxen sacrifice.
“The βουθυσία for Hyakinthos, which is indicative of his new immortal status, should be placed on the third day too. Oxen are costly victims, the bull being the most “noble” sacrificial animal. After mourning for Hyakinthos’s death and making a propitiatory sacrifice at his tomb, they honoured him with a bull sacrificed as if to a god. Yet the geographical range in which he was regarded as god was rather circumscribed and did not spread beyond the borders of Lakedaimonia. The βουθυσία for Hyakinthos would have been instituted after the construction of the altar on which Apollo received sacrifices; for the only altar excavated, in an area filled with remnants of burnt sacrifices, is attributed to Apollo.”
so there you have it. most places will probably call him a hero, and that wouldn’t be wrong. others may call him a deity, which also isn’t wrong. I’ll tell you what I’m personally going to go with, and everyone can make their own decision based on the information listed through this post and the readings I’ll link at the bottom. no matter your conclusion, the relationship you have will be completely yours, and it’s ok! if anything, I encourage that over taking my word for it. ══════════════════════════ for me, I think I consider him a deity. I know that I heavily romanticize the story, and with Apollo being so near to my heart, him having a terrible love life hurts my soul. while I don’t exactly want to rewrite any myths, I won’t claim that they are married, I will say that I believe them to be happy. their worship in Amyclae was so intertwined and based completely around each other from the history we know, that, for me, it makes sense to also honor them together. I’ll leave you all on one more incredibly sad quote from Lucien’s “Dialogue of the Gods” (that I referenced from earlier).
”Apollon : Well, my loves never prosper; Daphne and Hyakinthos (Hyacinthus) were my great passions; she so detested me that being turned to a tree was more attractive than I; and him I killed with a quoit. Nothing is left me of them but wreaths of their leaves and flowers.”
it’s ok to cry, I do nearly every time I read that.

I'm not sure if it was on your blog, but I read somewhere on tumblr that Apollo's statue in Sparta had 4 arms. Is that correct?
I think I haven't really talked about it, but anyway. One of Apollo's cult statues in Sparta was indeed four armed it seems.
[while describing the city Antioch]: “From four arches which are joined to each other in the form of a rectangle, four pairs of stoas proceed as from an omphalos, stetched out toward each quarter of the heavens, as in a statue of the four handed Apollo”
- Libanius, Orations
Ζenobius, quoting from Sosibius, has said that the Laconians set up a statue of 4 eared (Tetraôtos) and 4 armed (Tetracheir) Apollo, because the god appeared in this form to help Amyclea.
Tumblr media
Hesychios, quoting from Sosibius and an inscribed epigram from the Antonine ages, says that:
1) there were contests held in Amyclea at which leather straps made from the hide of the bulls sacrificed to Apollo Tetracheir were given as a prize to the athletes. (These contests were most probably those of the festival Hyacinthia, because they were the only athletic games in Amyclea.)
2) this four armed Apollo had the epithet Kouridios (which means "wedded", but this title was used to describe youthful Apollo it seems, so take it however you want)
Some scholars even belive that this statue might have been a hybrid of Apollo and Hyacinthus, since they both were worshipped together at Amyclea. While this theory might look like a stretch, I do think this cult image of four armed Apollo was tied to Hyacinthus' cult and worship. (also it's fun to imagine Apollo & Hyacinthus fusing Steven Universe style XD)

Amidst the 2.000 year-old conflict between their kins, Ismene's family captures Raphael last living child and his retaliation lands her in his House where the cells are the least dangerous place for an Isior.
Hidden allies within the House usher Ismene up the hierarchy ladder where she must pretend to be Raphael's ally and use her cunning to survive the ancient House rulers and, perhaps, discover the key to immortality. As his power is threatened, crafty resistance is the only way for Raphael to protect the world's biggest secret and get his son back. All that while a vengeful army approaches the House, seeking to kill all the people within its walls. If Ismene and Raphael choose to stand against it, they need to give up the idea of reunion with their family.
In the winter dark, warmth comes even from the enemy's lips and doubts fill both as they face the bitter consequences of trying to survive the cruelty of never-ending war.

ISMENE DEMARA – ISIOR  Future leader of her Isior Federation, Ismene is an ambitious young woman who could do anything for her community. Her people wouldn’t do anything for her, however, as her father happens to be the national Niruvei representative. Since she was a child she was exposed to the cruelty of the Niruvei and expecting war to break is her daily reality. She is trained to fight brutally but no one is as tender with flowers and lovers as she is. Though chaos is where she thrives, she executes every plan methodically.
RAPHAEL SHIRAZI – NIRUVEI The huge fortune Raphael amassed after millennia helped him build his own Death House and expand his influence worldwide but it never gave him the peace he desires. He’s tried every art and mastered many, using some for the protection of Humanity’s biggest secret. His enemies call him the Poisoner, his allies Doctor, for he protects his people fiercely. The Isior have been his biggest nightmare for the last two thousand years and a threat to everyone he loves. He misses the Outer Hearth and our universe has given him many dark moments, but he would never deny his body of earthly pleasures or his heart of romanticism.
CLIO  PETROPOULOU – ISIOR  This Isior is not only Ismene’s loyal guard, but also a supportive friend.
FIRUZ ROSTAMI – NIRUVEI Raphael’s fidus achates. A great warrior, he executes his master’s darkest plans.
