When betta fish are sold in tiny cups, many people assume that they do well in small spaces with minimal maintenance or equipment such as heaters or filters.
Tiny betta fish aquariums can only be profitable if consumers misunderstand the needs of betta fish.
Manufacturers like Aqueon, Marina, Penn-Plax Pet Products, and others are still making tiny betta kits -- some as low as 0.25 gal.
These companies are making money off of the suffering of bettas; they are profiting from the misconceptions that they perpetuate.
Betta fish are resilient and are capable of surviving in low-quality conditions.
Bettas should have an aquarium that is a minimum of five gallons, a heater, filter, and lots of plants and hiding spaces to create a stimulating environment.

Y'all, I got a rescue fish. I was buying fish food at the pet store and I saw this lil guy. I got him for free thanks to the awesome employee behind the register. I hope this lil betta makes it! His name is Mercury.
I want to ask for the future--is the Petco "1$ per gallon" tank sale over winter even worth it? Are the base tanks they're selling built even good? I'd generally not want to bother giving money to an aquatics shitstain like Petco or Petsmart, but do they offer like a 30 gallon from a decent maker for $30 or so that will allow me to have that bigger tank that won't LEAK... or won't be toxic to fishes and inverts? I'm leery but tempted. I would much rather settle for like... a better 25-ish gallon that doesn't support them and is better overall, and definitely would want a 30 gallon for the regular sale price of the Petco BS if it was decent.
(⋋‿⋌ ) Check out what I put picked up from the local pet store, it's called "The Protopet"! From Ratchet and Clank Going Commando! In actuality I'm selling this plush for $40 USD (including shipping within the US), it's a OOAK and will not be remade. Reblogs very much appreciated! (⋋‿⋌ )
This happens all the time at large chains like PetSmart and Petco where betta fish may die in transport or in tiny cups on the shelves.
It's not the fault of employees.
Betta fish are living beings and their lives should never have to depend on whether staff have the time or they get sold fast enough.
The corporate leadership of these chains is responsible for setting standards and policies, and for ensuring that the well-being of all pets in all of their stores is consistently prioritized.
These stores *consistently* have shelves of sick and dead pets.
I did accomplish quite a bit around the house. I studied for 2.5 hours today and feel like I got no where. There is so much reading and I hate the read out loud thing that is included with the book. Oh, and it won’t let me use the ai reader I paid for! Hoping tomorrow will go better as far as assignments are concerned.
