Thank you for the suggestions! I think I'm going to make some chili powder and hot pepper jelly :)
I was sort of taken by surprise by the chili plant - I impulsively planted it in early March, which is technically a month late, and then it survived an attempted murder by my cat (she ripped off the top 20 cm, including ALL of the leaves and flower buds) and I put it out on the balcony even though it was too cold for it. But it survived and sprouted more leaves, and then got flowers, and then peppers, and now they've started turning red and there are like 25 of them and I realised I have no idea what to do with them since a woman can only eat so many fresh chili peppers.
You're welcome! Chili powder and hot pepper jelly sound awesome :)
I'm laughing so much at your cat's mischievous adventures, it could have actually helped the pepper a little! I know some people cut the top off of their peppers in order to make them more bushy and it can inspire more production (I've never tried it myself, me peppers never grew that much), and if it ended up growing so much it must have been happy with the weather! Good job growing so many peppers impulsively, that's powerful!

the bad news is that my mom was sad that her eggplants haven’t been growing; however, it turns out that the reason her eggplants haven’t been growing is because her eggplants were actually spinach. The good news is that her spinach is growing very well. She was also sad that her peppers haven’t been growing either, but it turns out that the peppers were actually eggplant. And I’m happy to report that the eggplant is also growing very well.

I love you smile lines and worry lines and grey and white hair and wrinkles and purple spiderweb veins and the process of aging and living in a body that is standing the test of times. I love you experiences that make you wiser and stories that make you laugh, and every little process that happens to get to the point where you have so many memories because you have the fortune to be here and be so radiant
#positivity#pro aging#also i hate you 'anti aging' scams that capitalize on fear of aging. death by 1000000 papercuts for ye#saw a hair video where they restored the salt-and-pepper colour in an older clients hair and it looked SO GOOD at the end#i love when people throw in the towel and embrace their aging however that looks#it isn't productive to shame people who are ashamed of aging and i just want to. celebrate aging#in a world that simultaneously venerates youth and adulthood and hates BOTH you need to find some sense of freedom#as a Young Adult(tm) please please PLEASE older folks seeing this/following me know that i look up to you#older folks i need you to know that your worth NEVER diminished when you added a new number on your birthday cake#and your body and mind and soul NEVER lost worth because it started to creak a little at the joints#and i might be wrong about this because i'm still young but it can be SO tempted to miss your youth when you feel like...#...you've somehow LOST part of yourself by growing older. and so much of aging is about change and some things don't stay the same...#...and that IS scary and i will never once fault somebody for that. but please don't fall into the trap that because you've aged that...#...you somehow have forever lost fundamental pieces of Who You Are and you could never come back from that...#...for your own sake and sanity you deserve to find comfort and solice and understanding in who you still are...#...because you are still - at the core - the same. you can never take this away from yourself#and i know this might ring hollow because i just don't get what it's like to be older#but i have looked at my elders and felt awe at their age and their experiences#and i know what that is like and it's awesome. i just wish more older people knew that so many of us look at you with awe...#...and - if you can believe it - some of us ENVY your age or experiences or even body#i'm watching an 'older' content creator (older by internet standards 🙄) and i envy him for how eventful his life was#i envy that he experienced a different world - one that i have only heard about from my dad because i was too young to remember it#and i admire this person for their wisdom and thoughts because they've come from his experiences living in a Different World#it's that type of stuff that makes me unafraid to keep on living#inspired by following somebody like. twice my age posting about their excitement abiut growing older and !!!!!!! YEAHHHHHH#didn't realize they were closer to my dad's age but that's so cool???????????

Harvested part of the peppers this past weekend, to use in some sauces/veggie mixes for winter.
I didn't sow any fun or unusual varieties this year, didn't really have the patience for it, so I stuck with buying seedlings of my favorite varieties - Kapia and Ruffled Pimento.

Finally peeled and preserved the rest of the garlic cloves from the summer harvest. They’ve been in a bag separated but unpeeled and I’ve been slowly using them until now.
They’re not canned but instead hot vinegar is poured on the peeled cloves and they stay good all year in the fridge. The vinegar makes it to where no bad bacteria can grow on them and the enzymes from the garlic prevent the garlic from absorbing and tasting like vinegar. Just fish out however many cloves you need and use like normal!!
Hardneck cloves are in the jar on the left! They’re so much bigger and I like them so much more. Easier to peel, bigger cloves, and you get garlic scapes (delicious) before harvesting the bulbs. Last year I ordered mostly softneck and a little hardneck and this year I flipped it so that next year I’ll have primarily hardneck :)

Also, a lot of the newly planted garlics have popped! It’s not preferable for them to pop before spring but my weather is unpredictable and it happens every year. The cold will kill them but they’ll come right back in the spring 🌱

every year dew challenges mountain to grow a pepper too hot for him to eat. the pepper tasting has become a whole event at this point. everyone gathers around to see if dew can eat it. aether begs them not to do it so he doesn't have to see dew in the infirmary later. last year dew blew smoke out of his hears cartoon style but he insists that doesn't count

So I had this pepper plant randomly grow on my balcony, I'm not sure if I even planted that, sometimes edible plants will grow without my intervention because seeds get lost in the soil. Anyway I didn't pay any attention to it, because it's too late to transplant it to the garden, it was growing in the middle of the summer, and I just put it next to my other plants so it would get watered.
I noticed the other day that the plant was starting to grow little fruit on it! It had tiny little peppers! They were adorable, and quite admirable because that plant had only tiny bit of soil to grow in, it was ambitious to go and try growing peppers from basically no nutrition.
Peppers can actually survive the winter if you grow them in a pot and put them inside, you can have them next spring producing peppers again! They're not gonna produce in winter when there's not enough hours of sunlight, but they can be a nice ornamental plant. So I decided, this would be the destiny of my little volounteer pepper. I moved it into a bigger pot that happened to be empty, and took off all of the tiny peppers, so the plant would focus on producing bigger roots instead. Once a plant produces seed she can call it a day and die because she fulfilled her purpose. If you take seeds/fruits away, she will re-evaluate her situation and try growing bigger. That's what I want!

See this little grey plastic pot I'm holding, that's where the plant managed to grow to this size and grow fruit. I think that shows a level of stubbornness and resilience I'm looking for in a plant. This is going to be my pet pepper growing in my kitchen during the winter and hopefully, possibly, she might give me peppers early in the spring.

Plant of the Day
Saturday 2 March 2024
A member of the brassica family Brassica rapa var. nipposinica (mizuna, Asian greens, Japanese mustard greens, California pepper grass, spider mustard) can grow with protection through the winter. The feathery leaves have a mild mustard flavour which are sweet enough for salads and older leaves can be cooked like spinach. This biennial plant was in its second year and so was producing flowers.
