So, in case you haven't heard...

Penny, from Scarlet and Violet is officially related to both Peony and Peonia (and, well, Rose too, since he'd be her uncle)! Peony is her father, and Peonia is her sister.

For those unaware, this is Peony.

And this is Peonia!

The woman in this image is (presumably) their mother (unless Penny is a half-sibling or adopted, which I don't think is the case).

And let me just say, this makes me so, so happy, seeing this visual/genetic diversity in a family.

So many people are completely ignorant to how genetics and biracial people can exist and have their genes expressed. Two siblings from a biracial couple, such as a black and white person, can look totally different. One could have curly hair and one could have straight! One could be super light-skinned and the other dark-skinned! Two kids from two parents doesn't mean that they necessarily just get a "mix" of how they both look.

Seeing this represented makes me so happy. I really hope more people realize just how different siblings from interracial couples can look. I really hope people don't erase this aspect of Penny's character, or think that she doesn't look Black enough or enough like a POC.

For a real life example, here are a pair of biracial twins!

So, basically, the point of this post is this:

Penny is Peonia's sister and Peony's daughter! This was my headcanon for a while, considering her name is Penny and based on Peony, but seeing it confirmed makes me so happy. I want this post to end on the note to inform people that biracial people can look like this. Biracial people can pass completely as white. White-passing biracial people can have dark-skinned parents and family members. Biracial people don't owe you passing as their ethnicity and the ethnicity/race of their family.

Please embrace this aspect of Penny and learn what being biracial can look like! Understand, acknowledge, and accept how biracial people can look! I've already seen people frustrated that Penny doesn't look "Black enough" or saying that her design makes no sense, or that she couldn't possibly be Peony's daughter, which is already a huge issue for REAL LIFE BLACK PEOPLE, who are told this!!! Even if you don't realize it, these thoughts and ideas ARE racist to have. How you view people when they're not real can often be indicative of how you treat them when they ARE real!

I hope that if you didn't already know these things, that you don't feel bad about it, and instead come away with new knowledge and understanding!

Edit: Also she could just be adopted? I meant to say that in this post and forgot. Like, adoption is a thing. Like, we know that Bede was an orphan and all... (I however don't think she was adopted based on her visual similarities)

Additional edit: I'm not trying to imply that their family is Black, either—I mentioned Black biracial families as an example, and also mentioned it at the end because I specifically made this post in response to people saying Penny "isn't black enough" and directing their racism towards Black biracial families. In all likelihood, their family is probably implied to be the Pokémon equivalent of Indian.

Thinking about Peony being Penny's dad and wrote a lil thing for it

The noise rips Violeta right out of the annals of her history textbook. There’s someone shouting in the main entrance, making any library studying a fool’s errand. Train of thought thrown a good twenty meters off its tracks, Violeta strains her neck to look over the railing, watching a huge older man run up to the front desks in giant strides. His arms swinging as he laughs and jokes, he keeps glancing at some girl trailing awkwardly behind him. She looks like she’s trying to stay far enough back that no one realizes the two are here together– but as he shouts her name over and over, beckoning her forward with booming laughs that practically make the walls shake, it seems as impossible as Violeta regaining her focus. The idea of going back to her textbook long gone, Violeta moves to the railing. Nemona has likewise abandoned the pile of books in front of her, staring wide-eyed at the new visitor. 

“No hay manera…” she says breathlessly. Violeta scrutinizes him further, wondering what it is about this weird guy that has her so enraptured. He’s clearly Galarian from his accent, and looks like knockoff Chairman Rose right down to his horrific sense of fashion. By this point, he’s made it to the front desk, excitedly proclaiming his arrival with a fist pump in the air. 

“You can tell my sweet baby girl that Papa’s FINALLY here!” he shouts as the students all turn to whisper to each other. The girl behind him– another one of his daughters, perhaps– blanches, looking positively mortified.

“DAD,” she hisses, “knock it off! Don’t embarrass her like that, not here!” 

“Aww, Nia, but we came all the way from Galar to see her! Can’t a guy just be excited to see his daughter?” 

Nia just sighs, cupping her head in her hand. Violeta takes a sideways glance at Nemona to try and gauge why she seems so enamored with this stranger and notices that she’s taken to leaning over the railing, eyes alight and smile wider than a yamper in a tennis ball factory. 

“That’s the ex-champ of Galar!” she whisper-shouts as she lightly punches Violeta in the arm. “He’s like, the best steel specialist of all time!” She steps backwards, closing her eyes and clenching her fists as her excitement bubbles over with a flap of her arms. “I just… I– Guau!!” she squeals, and suddenly the guy turns to look at them both, his mouth open in surprise. “Oh, hello there ladies!” he shouts, waving his arms as though his boisterous greeting wasn’t enough to catch the attention of everyone from here to Alfornada. Nia– somehow– loses even more color from her face, suddenly rushing to grab his arm and turn his attention away from them. “By any chance,” he shouts as Nia begs him to shut up, “have either of you seen my sweetheart Pen-pen?”

Nemona yelps loud enough to shatter glass.

Some of my personal favorite moments from the newly translated Adventures SwSh pages. Spoilers under the cut.

^ NIA! Nia plays a much bigger role in the Tundra arc than she does in-game and you have no idea how happy that makes me. Her reaction to her dad being Calyrex's mouthpiece is choice.

^ Nia spends 2 pages roasting Rose (and thus Sou) for his shitty personality without naming him directly. Bonus: Bede trying not to lose his shit at Sou's misery.

^ THEM

^ Bede realizing that he's had character development and hating it.

^ Bede getting upset that Peony isn't calling him specifically a nickname.

^ Peony sliding in some History.

^ Opal has officially passed her title (and responsibilities) down to Bede.
