turning on anon not to send hate, but to send odysseus hate which is always right
i apologise for the fact that you like odysseus but he sucks. he cheats on his wife, who deserves so much better (i am penelope girlboss truther) and he spends a whole year just vibing with circe and then complains about how long it takes him to get home. admittedly his men also suck, but the majority of his problems stem from how much he sucks - bro is hubristically yelling at some guy who admittedly did eat his friends but doesnt deserve the hate. im a polyphemus apologist. also has a hell of a grudge against that guy in the trojan war who literally didnt do anything. cant remember that guys name something like themocles or themistocles???? that might bbe some persian guy tho or possibly thersites. anyway friendly reminder that he cut that guys head off for literally no reason (they were literally on the same side) also odysseus litrally flashed nausicaa. hes a problem. sorry for my wrong opinions

We all talk about how Penelope is strong in the 3x01 "Mr Bridgerton" scene because she doesn't fold after his shameless flirting but do you know what is true strenght? This moment right here. Because that boy is TOUCHING HER BARE ARM and TAKING HER HAND and he says "you really are very good, you know?" in the SOFTEST VOICE KNOWN TO MAN. And like... i'm sorry. I'm sorry but WHAT THE FUCK. HOW DID SHE NOT IMMEDIATELY FALL TO HER KNEES? Penelope Featherington is truly the strongest out of everyone because sure, she is desperately pining for him - but at least she keeps it under wraps. I would not have been able. If Colin Bridgerton said something like that to me I would have had no choice but to hit my knees and ask him if he would be kind enough as to compromise me immediately.

I love how in the Simon Snow trilogy the magical room mate picker thingy saw Simon and Baz and thought "ha ha. gay." and made them share a room for seven years.

When it comes to Penelope I feel like a lot of her fans take any valid criticism towards her and turn it into hate, which does her character a disservice. While some people do hate on her, a lot of it holds valid reasons. Admitting that she has hurt many people isn't wrong because she has, it's been shown on throughout the show and the impacts it can have. From labeling Daphne as "unmarriageable" during her first season and events that followed, her labeling Eloise as being part of a group of rebels, the terms she used to describe Kate [and Simon]-- which carried racial undertones no matter how you try to spin it, who didn't even know personally at that point, what she did Marina. All of these were very harmful and to say that none of these characters should feel angry, that they should just forgive Penelope without any work put into it is very laughable (especially because she's still writing as Whistledown and put many, namely women, at risk during a time where reputation is everything--something in which Penelope herself faces). With this being said, criticizing her actions, at least for me, doesn't come from a complete place of hate but more so from believing that she can be better if she puts in the work. By ignoring all that she's done and having her get her happily ever after so easily in the end, to be honest, would ultimately feel lackluster. I feel like she still has room to grow, but it will take a lot of work and, I personally, think seeing her renavigate who she is with who she wants to be outside of Lady Whistledown would be very interesting.

I can’t believe I have to make this post, but I saw another post where someone sent an ask to someone else and brought up that they had seen a post about how someone wanted Colin to be depressed that Pen hates him and that they couldn’t believe it, went on to talk about the toxicity of this fandom. And then poster talks about how we villainize men.
Are you talking about my post? Where I excitedly say I can’t wait to see Colin depressed over Pen’s ire toward him?
Normally I wouldn’t care, but lately people have had a tendency to just take things at face value and don’t bother to look past them.
First and foremost, I think it was clear in my excitement that I’m a Polin fan. That post was in no way, shape or form me villainizing Colin or rejoicing in his pain because I’m an anti. (Which I’m going to assume that’s what you assumed. I would have tagged it appropriately anyway, I’ve been in fandom a long, long time. Besides, the whole anti attitude of shitting on a pairing because they don’t like either/or/both characters is really stupid to me. Let people ship whoever they want and who cares about how people celebrate that).
I was excited about the angst. Colin has to go through some character growth this season. That was my point. I’m excited to see his character growth. I’m excited to see how he internalizes everything that’s going to happen.
Moreover, my post was obviously hyperbolic. It wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. Anyone with common sense knows that obviously Penelope doesn’t hate Colin. She’s in love with him and is coming to the realization that he isn’t perfect like she’s always thought. Just as he’s going to come to the realization that he can’t continue to expect her puff up his ego while he galavants. That’s what I’m excited about. Polin’s book is all about removing masks, literally and figuratively. It’s about finally seeing under the surface of what’s always been in front you.
Please don’t take my post at face value.

Odypen definitely and equivalently adore each other BUT I weirdly can't see them as the type to actually say "I Love you".
They still definitely vocalize their love for each other but it's more so in "My Joy", and "Extraordinary Woman", "Strange Woman/Man", etc. And very cheesy lines (both say some cheesy shit in the Odyssey, and he definitely does in the Iliad as well. "Joy like a drowning sailor seeing land" bit???)
I could see "I adore you" but even then, that's probably during very specific moments but the actual "I love you"??? I just typed it just now for fic shit and... It weirdly just didn't feel right and I don't know why. 😅
Idk maybe it's kind of because I see them as over the top in ways, they love wordplay and riddles and I think they'd almost think "...That's not good enough >:( " about it??? I don't know???😂
#I wrote this last night. I'll do the asks I got later. don't worry! :D#I am the cheese god remember?😅#I think these two would try to “out-cheese” each other and whoever is left speechless first loses#“I would forget my own name before I would ever forget you” bullshit. CHEESY#And yes. “I sleep in our nest with you or outside on the dirt” stupidity >:D#I plan for Odysseus as a beggar to ask why she waits so long. As he's been gone a longer amount of time than the time they had together#(Simply asking as reassurance. He knows his answer. Calypso asked him. but what about Penelope?) but she gets mad at the#“Beggar” and pities him as he must be telling the truth about having a miserable life if he never got the chance to know such devotion#How what they have could never be sullied by#something as trivial as distance and years. How the years with him were the best in her life. Only made better by their son.#'My dear Joy made songs and poems about love a reality as that was simply the life we shared. Even separated our 'song' will always echo#no matter how long it's been. I'LL make sure it always does. And I know he's doing the same... That strange man used to say that#even if he died his corpse would drag itself back to us before he'd ever give up.'#...I'm not one for 'odyssey zombie au' but when I first heard it yeah. :'D Came up with this back then#“His eyes as hard as flint or horn-” Bullshit! The sad lil fuck is hiding sobs with coughs and telling her to keep away for fear of her#catching whatever “illness” he has. The nice thing about being disguised as old means sickly old man works.#...#I'm noticing that Odysseus has a lot of silly oneliners while I write Penelope with a shit ton of set up :'D#They are so silly and I love them so much#...I wrote a lot :'D#Mad rambles#shot by odysseus#my headcanons#odypen#yahoo!!!#sometimes I wonder if I should tag this with more things but I don't want to taint the regular tags with my bullshit :'D I KNOW I'm insane

I know there are bound to be differences from book to screen. I know no one will ever be happy as a book lover to watch an adaptation fall short in someway. It just feels so very avoidable if they went in chronological order. Give them 1.5-2 more years. Let Penelope become her own person a tiny bit beyond Whistledown. Be pleased with where she gets LD to.
Let Colin gain more of a personality than eating and leaving. Make him the lovable scamp you show Benedict to be. Let him grow restless.
Let them be awkward after Colin, a friend (and crush) offends her in her own home in front of potential suitors. What’s more British than not actually talking about it???? Let Benedict find his Cinderella. Maybe LW is kinder than everyone expects, even goes after Sophie’s “family” and while Eloise won’t forgive her outright, maybe she’s less vindictive.
Let them build something from that as he travels. And when he gets back, all bronze and hunky, suddenly smooth to every female (as they seem to imply he suddenly is) but he’s there for his family. He’s there for his truly good friend Penelope, who has taken control of her wardrobe if nothing else and avoids yellows. She looks lovely, is friendly with Lady Danbury, has a begrudging standoffish relationship with Eloise that no one really knows what happened. She is warm to Kate the few times they interact as to not piss off Eloise and Violet still has a fondness for.
She can still want out of the Featherington household, by way of marriage. She can find her voice without LW as a mask, making Colin sit up a bit more. She’s always looked lovely, but does she sparkle when she laughs? Is that new?
And then finding out she’s LW, perhaps concern warring with the fact that she’s found something her own. The same thing we wants too, and is jealous of that. Jealous that she is indeed braver for risking it all and leaving behind more than her name and status. That while yes, he has been running away he’s found something, created something that he can’t find the courage to take further like she has. That both his older brothers are happily settled with their own things to look after but he feels at sea even when he is home.
Still can have Francesca meet John, still have Eloise & Pen not talking. But there’s more emotion behind it. Instead of 2 late bloomers discovering they’re suddenly hot, thank goodness they’re friends. Someone start playing Linger by the Cranberries.
Sorry, just needed to get this out.

To add onto to what I mentioned about aroace stuff, I think it's just in general. sometimes I look at ships and I don't get why they like each other? Like I think it's cute but when I think about it a little bit, I don't really understand it fundamentally. That could either be a product of being aroace, raised heavily religious and conservative, or a weird concoction of all three lmao
I think this is part of the reason why my favorite pairings are usually already established/married. Otherwise I just! Don't understand

theories, theories, theories!!
so going off clips and the trailers, i believe the first time colin and penelope see each other after his trip and the party is when she's wearing that awful yellow dress and sees eloise with cressida. then somewhere along that episode she'll have a crisis of revamping herself to find a husband. wardrobe change!!! then we'll get the scene where she walks down the stairs in that emerald dress but is still on the side-lines watching everyone dance. this will then roll into the 'goodnight mr bridgerton' scene and she confesses what he did. leading to the next stage when he goes to the garden and says 'if you want help finding a husband, i'll help you, friends? friends'
i also think that scene when colin sits up in bed startled from a dream is the one where near the end of the trailer they're walking around in the fog and she's in that gorgeous dress/nightdress, i think he'll wake up from that, throw on some clothes, which spirals into that scene when she's sitting at the window looking thoughtful and dreamy and they both then meet and she looks stunned and confused as to why he is there.

thinking about the 'I would never court Penelope Featherington' scene again and how angry our fandom has been at Colin for it for the last two years and wondering. . .what exactly was he meant to say?
Lord Fife and his friends are *slimy*. They are gross. They have 0 respect for women. Fife isn't *Colin's* friend. Fife is *Anthony's* friend. Fife runs in Anthony's circles. Misogynistic circles with misogynistic language. Fife and Co. are out here saying the debutantes are only good for being 'wed, bed, and bred'. Fife is the one out here, well into his 30s and with an established title, fucking an 18 year woman raw on her first year out in the marriage mart with 0 intention to marry her. That is 10000% an act of violence in this society. And you *know* he's bragging about it. Hell, he was probably bragging about it right before he asked Colin about Penelope.
Colin's not in those circles. Colin has female friends. Colin respects his mother. Colin cares for his sisters. The worst thing Colin has EVER said about a woman was to call her 'cruel'.
So. . .what is Colin meant to say? "No, we're just friends" isn't going to fly for people like Fife. As IF he wouldn't reply with 'Yeah, suuuuuure, wink wink nudge nudge'. Thus ruining Penelope and fucking over her future completely. A lesser man than Colin would have let them think what they wanted, and that would have still ruined Penelope in their eyes. Silence? Incriminating.
And he doesn't want FIFE of all people to know about his close friendship with Penelope. Fife who has never once been seen respecting a woman. Fife who has never once viewed a woman as a person and not a sexual conquest. Penelope is a safe place for Colin. Is precious to him. He KNOWS that conversation could have destroyed her reputation.
People talk about how he 'ruined her prospects', but in actuality, Colin responding the way he did. . .likely SAVED her prospects. There was NOTHING he could have said except for a vehement refusal, completely shutting down the conversation, that would have spared her from their judgement and cruelty. Sure, they laughed, and maybe it was at Pen. Maybe it was at Colin. (frankly, how good of a twist would it be if they WERE laughing at Colin? Colin the 'green' boy back from his travels after being oh so gullible and getting lied to by his ex fiance? Anthony made fun of Colin for being a virgin, we think these men, all 10+ years older than him, wouldn't do the same?) But at least they didn't go 'yeah, I guess she's a ruined woman' about it, because that *would* have destroyed her reputation
We talk about how Colin could have worded it differently, but honestly?
I think he said the exact right thing in those circumstances
#polin#penelope featherington#colin bridgerton#bridgerton#lord fife#lord cho#fife and company are so gross to me i do NOT understand the narrative of fife just wanting pen for himself#she's a little too old for him at this point considering he's looking for his girlfriend on a playground don't you think?#sorry not sorry i will forever be a colin apologist#no but really what should he have said????#'oh yeah we're fucking six ways to sunday?'#'no she's just my friend'? - Fife doesn't believe for a MOMENT that a man can value a woman as a friend#colin is the best man in that entire bunch but somehow he's the one we've demonized?#make it make sense#and sure he should apologize for talking about her behind her back- but Penelope should also then apologize for the same#we talk a lot about him being 'knocked off the pedestal' but in reality we've put him on the highest pedestal possible#colin is a GOOD man#he is arguably the best man in the entire series#at least he's the man with the best intentions and the least harm#and so when he fucks up we feel it ten fold because he was already so good#but when gross dudes fuck up we just expect it of them and give them a pass#we expect colin to not only be better- but to be perfect#and he isn't he can't be#he didn't say it perfectly#but OBVIOUSLY his intentions in that scene aren't malicious#and it's not locker room talk either?#look at the optics: Colin is 22 being asked by these 30+ year old dudes 'sooooo are you boinking the girl'?#one season after his engagement blew up publicly#in the season where no one listens to his travel stories#the season after he was virgin shamed
