Summary:

2033. Five graduate students intern at their university’s newly launched buoyant arctic research station, Outpost Azophi, dreading a post-graduate life of working until death, with high student-loan interest rates, shrinking wages, and rising costs of living. Shortly after arriving, the team suffers under the strain of mysteriously damaged equipment, unusual weather phenomena, and isolation-induced paranoia. Trapped five-hundred miles away from help, they are forced to contend with strange forces: a trans-dimensional entity that subsists off psychological decline; a cosmic axolotl made of dark matter and star dust with an uncertain destiny and the very creature sought by cannibalistic versions of themselves from another reality, determined to use it to obtain immortality, all while the Devourer closes in on earth to swallow the sun.

Characters

Rainer Kauflin

the astrophysics specialist and leader. He is decisive and methodical but lacks a sense of self-preservation. He is 25, trans, aroace, Jewish, an Aries sun, and has A- blood. Rainer is still hung up on his unrequited platonic love for his straight, childhood best friend, Kodi, whom he hasn’t heard from since Kodi betrayed their promise and followed his girlfriend to college instead of Rainer. He has no relationship with his parents since coming out at 18 and has no siblings or close friends and he deeply fears post-graduate life, working with no end in sight. He deals with his emotional issues by suppressing them.

Holly Sansen

the psychology specialist, she is competent and independent but has a sardonic sense of humor and has hard time admitting when she’s wrong. She is 26, cis, demi-romantic, lesbian, Capricorn sun and has type O- blood. When she was six, her father began molesting her, which continued until she hit puberty and he lost interest. Both her mother and her three sisters were aware but did nothing to protect her, worried about the consequences to the family's status if Holly's father were prosecuted. She has all but convinced herself sexual trauma is necessary to hold upper class, traditional American family's together. She deals with her emotional issues by suppressing them.

Isaiah Messier

the engineering specialist, he is laid back, resourceful, and tenacious, with more self-loathing than any one person should have. He is 27, cis, biace, biracial (half Black half White), a Pisces, and has O+ blood. His father passed away from an overdose when he was eight, having spent most of Isaiah's childhood in and out of jail for petty drug charges. His mother's alcoholism and father's death forced Isaiah and his brother to grow up far too young. When he was seventeen his girlfriend committed suicide and he began an affair with the Dean of Admission's at his dream school in exchange for tuition. He deals with his emotional issues by suppressing them.

Eva Castellano

the climatology specialist, she is kind and introverted, but is too passive and fearful to be much more than be a wallflower. She is 26, trans, grayromantic, pansexual, Latina, a Libra, and has B+ blood. She came out when she was very young and her father accepted her but her mother couldn't. This, as well as her mother's worsening mental health and refusal to stick to a medication, resulted her her parent's divorce, with her father taking full custody. When she was ten her mother broke into her father's house while they were sleeping and kidnapped her, only for them to get into a car crash, resulting in the involuntary commitment of her mother. Her father passed away during her first year of college and without him she has felt too directionless and numb to live. She deals with her emotional issues by suppressing them.

Pax Hoffield

the microbiology specialist, they are reliable and emotional, with a strong distrust of others and a problem with self-doubt. They are 24, nonbinary, unsure about their sexuality, autistic, a Virgo, and is AB-. They were orphaned when young and drifted from foster home to foster home and spent most of their childhood in ABA "therapy" as the state sought to "fix" their autism. They chose microbiology because they were good at it and had job security, instead of choosing to pursue literature or linguistics, two of their special interests and real passions. They are looking upon a future doing a job they have no interest in and feeling regretful that it's too late to turn back. They deal with their emotional issues by suppressing them.

Dynamics in TBWA i am obsessed with.

Isaiah & Rainer: (soft) Isaiah admires Rainer's calm esp. when under stress and never thinks twice about what Rainer asks him to do; Rainer highly respects Isaiah's mechanical repair skills as well as his

Ava & Holly: (less soft more sketch) Ava thinks Holly is a good researcher but not a good therapist (i.e. she is so objective she can't sympathize with her patients). Holly views Ava as a boring puddle of lukewarm water that you won't even notice you step in. Holly thinks she's nice enough but that there's nothing interesting about her.

Pax & Holly: Pax is deeply paranoid that Holly is actively trying to harm themselves and the other at the station. Holly simply thinks that Pax is suffering a paranoid break and that their fears aren't based in reality. Pax further dislikes Holly for pathologizing their emotions.

Holly & [Redacted]: Imagine having someone attempt to lobotomize you? And then you stab them to protect yourself and suddenly you're the asshole?

Rainer & [Redacted]: Do you have gender envy, sexual attraction, or homicidal intent? Yes. You have all three.

tell me about your favorite aspect of your wip! I wanna know everything!

I had a whole three paragraphs of everything I liked and then tumblr refreshed and didn’t save it as a draft since it was an ask.

So I’ll do a quicker summary.

I love Pax. Their character’s POV goes on tangents much like my own mind and they are the only character who does that. I always look forward to writing their chapters. Also their rage is cathartic.

I also spent a lot of time researching astronomy and I feel like the science fiction aspects of my novel are very plausible.

Lastly I really like Zyx, the axolotl type creature for whom the series is named. They were born when two inter dimensional creatures collided and tore a hole in the realities. They are telepathic and can control gravity and their body is a superfluid, constantly moving liquid with higher gravity which means it retains a form and doesn’t spill everywhere.

And a side note. I also really really really like the true antagonists. They are terrifying and intelligent and ruthless and a bit Galaxy Brained. Sadly I’m not at the point in the book where they come in but I’m very excited for every scene they have.
