“Nine Arrested In Anti-Draft Street Riots,” Montreal Star. March 25, 1942. Page 3.   ---- Tram Store Windows Broken as Mobs Throng North End District ---- Seven youth and a 23-year-old man arrested by city police last night during anti-conscription, anti-Semitic riots in the north and east section of the city, were held on personal bail of $200 each today by Judge Tetreau, pending trial on charges of vagrancy on April 2. All plead not guilty when arraigned. Another accused a 15-year-old boy will appear before Court.
The nine were arrested at the arena of two of the several disturbances during which, according to police reports, traffic was blocked, store, automobile and street car window were broken, car trolleys were pulled off their lines and cries were pulled off their of “A bas la conscription" (down with conscription) and "A bas les Juifs” (Down with the Jew) drowned out other shouting.
LIST OF ACCUSED The accused today gave their names and addresses as follows:
Fernand Lapointe, 22, 2379 Rouen street; Maurice Riel, 19, 3925 Mentana street;  Jean Paul Deapres, 17, 7566 de-Gaspe street; Raymond Lefrancois, 16, 7549 Henri Julien street; Andre Laberge, 16, 310 St. Joseph Blvd East Edgar Therrien, 17, 6571 St. Dominique street; Jacques Rondeau 18, 5802 13th Avenue Rosemount; Laurent Crevier, 18, 4092, St. Denis street They are charged with vagrancy under article 28, section F, of the Criminal Code which rules that “every one is a loose idle or disorderly person or vagrant who causes a disturbance in or any street, road, highway, or public place by screaming, shouting, wearing, storing, or by being drunk, or by impeding or incommoding peaceable peaceable passengers.'
The offence carries a maximum penalty of a fine of $50 and costs or six months in Jail with or without hard labor or a fine and jail sentence both.
Contrary to the previous occasion Iast month when similar disturbances took place following an anti-conscription meeting in the St James Market hall, the riots did not start last night at or near the Pouliot anti-plebiscite meeting in the north end. MEETING ORDERLY Police stated today that the first disturbance started In the north end of the city but that the Pouliot meeting was conducted and finished in an orderly fashion. They were corroborated by newspapermen attending the meeting who pointed out that the first outbreak by the youthful demonstrators originated some distance from the hall at St. Dominique and Jean Talon streets where the meeting took place.
Police were unable to state whether any of the demonstrators had actually attended the meeting.
The first cries of "A bas les Juifs" and “A bas la conscription” were heard along deChateaubriand, St. Hubert and Beaubien streets, and north end side streets as a large group of youthful demonstrators gathered and headed towards the lower section of the city. The paraders pulled bus trolleys off their power lines, broke some store windows, stuck stickers on others, broke a few street car windows, and held up traffic in general
The crowd of demonstrators, as well as the spectators along the sidewalks, grew as the paraders continued on St. Lawrence boulevard, Beaubien streets, Bernard and Laurier avenues. The largest group was broken up by police at St. Lawrence boulevard and Pin avenue in a melee in which much shouting and street fighting took place. Several of the youths in court today were arrested at that point.
YOUNG MAN INJURED Maurice Quintal, 17, 6599 Alma street, who claimed to be only passing by at the time was taken to the Hotel Dieu to be treated for facial injuries. He claimed he was struck by a soldier at Napoleon street and St Lawrence boulevard. He was sent home after treatment.
Meantime, self -elected traffic officers tried to take control of traffic at several points and pieces of ice were flung at automobile when the drivers failed to follow the directions of the would-be traffic directors. This was done first at Laurier avenue and St Lawrence boulevard where the glass in a street car door was also broken.
One of the first actual fistic melees between the demonstrators and others occurred in front of the Young Men’s Hebrew Association headquarters on Mount Royal avenue near Park avenue, where an altercation took place on the sidewalk. There were some fisticuffs without any real damage and no one could say who was the actual aggressor.
When the first mob was broken up by police at St. Lawrence boulevard and Pine avenue, many of the demonstrators proceeded to St. Hubert street to join another group that had paraded down that street from the north end. The crowd there mounted to about 500 and took control of the street obstructing traffic.   POLICE REINFORCED As the crowd got out of hand on St. Hubert street more police under orders of Chief Inspector Alfred Belanger and Capt. J. O'Neiil were rushed from the north end of the city.
The demonstrators jeered and made cat-calls as they banged on tin cans and old tubs, rapped on passing cars with sticks, and smashed store and street car windows with pieces of ice.
The demonstration developed into a real riot to the Jewish section and the main plate glass window of Richstone's bakery at 3883 St. Lawrence boulevard was broken as well as the main show window to the Costiner Stationery and Toy store at 3951 St. Lawrence boulevard.
The remainder of the youths in court today were taken into custody on St. Lawrence boulevard below Napoleon street where an other fracas developed as police reserves tried to break up a parading group there.
Passengers in street cars on lines along the street visited by the various groups of rioters could be seen standing to the centre aisle of the car or on their seats to avoid flying glass from broken windows. They were following the advice of street car conductors and motor-men. ENDED AT MIDNIGHT By midnight the actual demonstrations had been virtually stopped. Owners of several better-known stores in the district and others with smaller premises surveyed the damage they had suffered, while several groups of citizens could be seen in various places still excitedly discussing the demonstrations.
One 15-year-old boy who refused to take the advice of police and 'break it up and go home" will appear today in the Juvenile Court.
Police who were blamed by by some time for the last outbreaks on grounds that there were too many of them at the St. James Market hall, pointed to the demonstrations of last night as proof of the fact that this was only an excuse offered by the rioters for their actions.
Pouliot Urges “No” To Plebiscite Question Both conscription for oversell military service and amalgamation of the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways were the immediate Federal legislative projects warned against last night by Jean Francois Pouliot, M.P. for Temiscouata. when exhorting Canadians to vote "No" In the April 27 plebiscite on pre-election Government commitments.
Mr. Pouliot spoke at a public meeting organized by the Ligue pour la Defense du Canada (League for the Defence of Canada) In the Jean Talon market hall. The hall was filled to capacity by a standing audience and outside, hundreds listened to the speeches from loud speakers.
Of the conscription issue, Mr. Pouliot said "Only those now on active service overseas, those who served overseas to the war of 1914-18 or those fathers who have sons overseas, can with decency call for compulsory overseas service.”
[AL: Esther Deslile caused a scandal by correctly identifying a strong current of antisemitism and pro-Vichy sentiment in Québec, though historians like John Hellman and Olivier Courteaux have largely confirmed her findings. That this antisemitism and pro-Vichy sentiment gained strength by opposing conscription during the Second World War is not surprising, and here is a particularly riotous example.]

"Paul Tholey has recently derived several techniques for inducing lucid dreams from over a decade of research involving more than two hundred subjects. Tholey claims that an effective method for achieving lucidity (especially for beginners) is to develop a 'critical-reflective attitude' toward your state of consciousness. This is done by asking yourself whether or not you are dreaming while you are awake. He stresses the importance of asking the 'critical question' ('Am I dreaming or not?') as frequently as possible, at least five to ten times a day, and in every situation that seems dreamlike. The importance of asking the question in dreamlike situations is that in lucid dreams the critical question is usually asked in situations similar to those in which it was asked during the day. Asking the question at bedtime and while falling asleep is also favorable."

Nova Scotia to spend $15M on 11 arts, community projects across province
The Nova Scotia government is spending more than $15 million on 11 arts and community projects around the province, including a new community centre in Oxford and upgrades to Neptune Theatre in Halifax.
Matthew Bragg, vice-president of the Oxford Community Centre Association, says the new centre will bring services to the community that are currently missing.
“This is about building a sustainable community centre that will retain and attract residents from across Nova Scotia, Canada and around the world,” said Bragg in a Monday news release.
The province says the centre will have a walking track, gymnasium, meeting and community rooms, child care, a library, commercial rental spaces and a full-service kitchen.
The province is spending $7 million on the centre, and $886,000 for digital and infrastructure upgrades to Neptune Theatre.
“As we begin to round the corner on recovery from the challenges of the last few years, this funding is a real game-changer,” said Paul Laberge, board chair at the Neptune Theatre Foundation. “We are very, very appreciative of the support.”
Other projects receiving money include:
Pictou Cultural Hub – $4.7 million toward project costs
Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources, Eskasoni – $1.2 million toward environmental learning centre
Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, Halifax – $500,000 toward a new home in the Scotiabank Centre
Chester Playhouse — $400,000 toward repairs from fire damage
Gaelic College Beinn Mhabu — $300,000 toward the Mabou satellite campus
Turret Arts Society, Halifax — $200,000 for Khyber building remediation and design
Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, Canning — $150,000 for solar energy project
Portapique Community Hall — $150,000 to complete the community hall project
Inverness Centre for the Arts — $100,000 for an HVAC system
The 2023/2024 provincial budget, released Thursday, added $5.1 million more in operating grants for arts and culture organizations and community-owned museums. It also included $2.6 million more for provincial museums and the operation of the iconic Bluenose II, the province said.

We’re no strangers to the finespun beauty of Fjord’s music. The duo from Quebec City has enthralled us and enraptured us aplenty with their ambient pop and indie electro in the past. The pair returns with another emphatic dose of their cinematic moving, lush captivating pop on Lay Down Your Veil, their first single since 2016, when they released their debut album Textures. Its accompanying video, directed and animated by Paul Laberge, is an abstract film that mirrors the cinematic quality of the song. Lay Down Your Veil is a densely layered hybrid that fuses electronica with ambient pop, permeated with vivid orchestral arrangements. The song is the first single from Fjord’s forthcoming Shallow Waters EP, written in Quebec City, produced in London with the help of Tim Bran (Bloc Party, London Grammar, La Roux), and featuring live string recordings from the Quebec Symphonic Orchestra. Verdun Auditorium, Montréal Québec

Verdun Auditorium in Montréal, Québec
28 Apr 2021
Verdun Auditorium
Architects: Les architectes FABG
Location: Montreal, QC, Canada
The major transformation of the Verdun Auditorium and the Denis-Savard Arena is a project to completely rebuild the Denis-Savard arena and revalue the historic architecture of the auditorium by peeling off its metal envelope while modernizing the interior of the complex.
The intervention attempts to create a dialogue both temporal where the ancient meets the modern and geographical, where the River borders the city. Thus, the meeting of the architecture takes place in an emblematic axis of this double dialogue, the foyer, from where it is possible to observe the two ice simultaneously while circulating from the city to the river.
The project also aimed to equip the complex with a new energy-efficient refrigeration system as well as obtain LEED Gold certification. Among the various strategies used, we note the reduction of water consumption in the operation of the arena, the efficiency of the mechanics, and the construction of a high-performance envelope for Denis-Savard.
The iconic Verdun Auditorium is located at 4110 LaSalle Boulevard, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River right by the Verdun urban beach at the convergence of three significant roads in the borough: Avenue de l’Église, LaSalle, and Gaétan-Laberge boulevards.
Its location on the river and in the historic center of the district makes it one of the most important landmarks of Verdun. It is one of the many recreational and cultural facilities located along the Saint-Laurent river including the Arthur-Therrien pool, Verdun urban beach, Verdun Natatorium, and the Saint-Dizier Nivard House. It is also part of the civic facilities of the former municipality including the parish complex of the church of Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, the Verdun Hospital Center, and the current Verdun borough council. The surrounding area is mostly residential except for a few shops scattered on Avenue de l’Église and Boulevard LaSalle. It is a typical district of Verdun in that it’s composed of rectangular islets with an alley.
Inaugurated on November 28, 1939, the Auditorium of Verdun is an atypical building. It boasts a rich history in sports and cultural heritage of the Verdun and Montreal residents. Its frame, built in the early 20th century, is made up of adjoining duplexes and triplexes in clay brick, and more recently, housing towers. The original Verdun Auditorium has architectural qualities that make it a good Montreal example of the Art Deco style, characteristic of the 1930s. Used from the end of its construction by military authorities during the Second World War, it opened its doors for hockey and skating in 1946. It was home of the Verdun Maple Leafs, in which Maurice Richard played in his early days, as did the Montreal Canadiens before the construction of the Bell sports complex in Brossard. In addition to Maurice Richard, famous hockey players such as Denis Savard, Pat Lafontaine, Mario Lemieux, Claude Lemieux, and former coach Scotty Bowman have graced its halls.
With a seating capacity of nearly 4,000, the Verdun Auditorium became a venue for important political events (the 1980 and 1995 referendums) and rock music concerts (Bob Dylan, Nirvana, The Cure, Pearl Jam, and Iron Maiden). The auditorium left an indelible mark on the citizens who frequented this emblematic place during their youth.
Over the years its facade has been covered with metal siding and a second rink, the Denis-Savard arena, has been added. The mandate the FABG architects were given involved the demolition and reconstruction of the Auditorium, preservation of the Denis-Savard arena, and a complete upgrade and replacement of the Freon refrigeration system, an environmentally harmful gas while aiming for LEED Gold certification.
Rather than destroy the historic landmark, FABG architects proposed the enhancement and restoration of the auditorium and the demolition & reconstruction of the Denis-Savard arena by arranging between the two a foyer from which it is possible to observe the two rinks from the city towards the river along the axis of a new urban beach. The asphalt surfaces around the building were reduced to promote a better relationship with Parc J.-Albert-Gariépy and the ecosystem along the river.
The public spaces feature a cross-laminated timber roof chosen as much for its contribution to carbon sequestration as for its contribution to the definition of a simple and robust architectural language for these spaces. Particular care has been taken to restore and maintain the character of the interior spaces of the auditorium. This was accomplished by restoration of the original masonry facade and of the wooden benches, which are complemented by the mixed structure (wood and steel) of the roof.
Verdun Auditorium will continue to play an important role in Montreal’s public spaces; now including 3,181 square meters of additional halls, public spaces, meeting rooms, etc., which unify the two arenas and reaffirm its sports, convention, and multifunctional vocation.

About FABG Founded in 1954 and formerly known as Blouin et Associés, the firm FABG changed its name in 1988 to reflect the succession of a third generation to the management of the company that now exceeds its fifty years.
Since its foundation, the team has an average of fifteen members, and movements within the staff are quite rare. This stability is necessary for the transmission of a corporate culture that promotes the quality of service and products delivered.
The company offers comprehensive architectural services with special expertise in cultural venues and restoration and renovation projects that have earned it more than 50 awards and mentions of excellence here and abroad.
FABG architects mainly serve institutional clients for public projects. Many projects have been or are being carried out with the city of Montreal and its boroughs, from the Pierrefonds Community center, the restoration of Esso station in Verdun, the Maison de la Culture Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, and the transformation of the Bibliothèque Centrale. We have also completed the functional and technical programs for the Montréal-Nord and Saint-Charles libraries.
The effectiveness of the services provided by a firm is measured by the confidence that
grants it repeatedly and which has the consequence of gradually strengthening its degree of expertise. Over the past twenty years, FABG has been the recurring choice of major cultural stakeholders (Cirque du Soleil, Jazz Festival, National Theatre School of Canada, Ex-Centris, World Film Festival, Place des arts, etc.) for the realization of many projects in Montreal.

SPaMCAST 630 – It’s All About the People, A Panel Discussion with Laberge, Parente, Voris, Sweeney, and Cagley
In March 2020, as our world was shrinking and words like ‘lockdown’ and ‘zoom-bombing’ were becoming a reality, we recorded and aired SPaMCAST 597. Paul Laberge, Susan Parente, Jo Ann Sweeney, John Voris, and I talked about how we could create or preserve interactions leading to serendipity. Remote working was new for many people. This week we discuss what went well and what have we learned from…

Life in Grey from Jonathan Desbiens on Vimeo.
Point Point - Life in Grey: The song and title inspired me to create a narrative about the Y generation, about how people can become desperate about creating the perfect piece of work, the ultimate fulfillment in the eyes of others. The obsession of a promised, expected, fulfilling life. I like to think that this video is about how this generation has been told repeatedly by their parents how special of a person they are. I wanted to create a ridiculous, sadly desperate and manipulative character that would push this obsession to the limits; death as an art performance.
