Keefe Jackson / Oscar Hoogland / Joshua Abrams / Mikel Patrick Avery — These Things Happen (Astral Spirits)
Tumblr media
These Things Happen by Keefe Jackson / Oscar Jan Hoogland / Joshua Abrams / Mikel Patrick Avery
Gazing back through history is every bit as viable a strategy in jazz as is pushing forward. But whenever musicians deal with history, it’s fair to ask what they’re bringing to the table, especially when they’re dealing with a subject as oft-investigated as Thelonious Monk.
In the case of this Chicago-meets-Amsterdam quartet, which went on to claim the name of this record as its own sometime between the date of the recording session (April 29, 2016) and its ultimate release in August 2022, Monk’s material multitasks. The way they amplify Monk’s potential for rhythmic clunkiness on “Epistrophy” is not only an opportunity to take to task every slick session that’s smoothed out the master’s eccentricities, but also an opportunity to celebrate the wooden shoe timing of noted Monk afficionado and ICP Orchestra founder Misha Mengelberg. When this record was made, Hoogland, whose 1983 birthday makes him the youngest guy in the band, seemed a likely candidate to inherent Mengelberg’s prankster-genius mantle. While he’s since proved too restless to stick to jazz, his approach to “Bemsha Swing” shows why he could have done the job. He and drummer Mikel Patrick Avery show an acrobatic team’s aplomb as they exaggerate the tune’s jagged cadence into a lurching, airborne spectacle.
Monk’s music is also simultaneously challenging and a kind of lingua franca, which is a handy thing to draw upon when your band’s members have complicated schedules and far-flung addresses, but don’t want to just cruise their way through some simple tunes. The melodies that Keefe Jackson’s tenor saxophone navigates on “Epistrophy” amount to a 3-D chess abstraction of lines that are already way more jagged than you might remember them to be. And Joshua Abrams’ bass hops through the trickiest parts of “Bemsha Swing” like a jiujitsu-trained ballet dancer skipping from one lily pad to the next, crossing the pond without once wetting his feet.
All this attention paid to the Monk material should not be interpreted as shade cast upon the record’s other four performances. The way they saunter and lurch through Herbie Nichols’ martial “The Happenings” is so broad and sure-footed, one suspects that they must be trying to hide something with big smiles. The rises and falls of Dewey Redman’s “Gotta Get Some Sleep” are so fitful, it’s an honorary Monk tune. And Hoogland’s two contributions stand tall in lofty company. “Wimpel” covers a lot of ground in a short time, starting out romantic, turning abstract, then coming back with double ardor. And the antic zigzags of “Aanhanguis” will have you grabbing the sides of your chair just to keep from falling off. One caveat — this album lasts just 22 minutes, and you may find yourself wishing there were 22 more. But the choice to cut the LP at 45 RPM brings out the best in a very good sound.

These are Kwasi, Kwasi, Kwasi Nights
Tumblr media
Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker was looking for more bartenders as Dom’Unique Variety is going away on a tour soon.
But they’re also looking for promoting the ones they’ve already got. And Phillip Fremgong wanted them to promote Shawndreca Robinson!
This is night and day from the premiere episode! They’ve come a long way this season.
Phillip helped his brother’s girlfriend with getting a job interview for the bartender job, but she showed up drunk!
DonJuan Clark asked some shady questions, like how she would handle intoxicated people.
The weirdest part was that the girl thought she did good!
Another comic situation in this episode was Patrick Dallas’ photoshoot for his luxury oils brand.
He’s launching his luxury oils with the unfortunate name “Peau Confiante”.
Everybody tells him that the name sounds like shit, but he refuses to change the name.
There’s something about Patrick that feels… slow.
Maybe it’s the way he’s searching for his words in the confessionals and the way he’s so whipped by Safari Foxe.
Every time it’s Safari this and Safari that.
However, he brings a lot of comedy with his awkwardness.
Torin Mitchell called the name ugly. Kandi couldn’t support the name. Dom’Unique said that it sounded like he was selling shit.
But they all came to support his photoshoot for the oils. And there’s so many characters on this show that just makes me laugh so much.
Patrick wanted DonJuan to pose bare-chested, to which DonJuan said that “nobody wants to see me promoting Poo Confiante, get the fuck out of here”.
DonJuan cracks me up so much!
But while Torin did some research for the photoshoot, they stumbled upon Phillip’s past as a model. He called himself Kwasi at that time.
I’m relieved that Phillip has finally found his place with the employees at the OLG.
Especially with Brian Redmond, because that didn’t start off great at all.
Now, Brian printed t-shirts with the picture of Kwasi on and showed up to the photoshoot with Shawndreca wearing the shirt.
Thankfully, Phillip laughed of their little stunt, but I was worried for a second there.

BLAKE SNELL & PATRICK BAILEY TOGETHER AGAIN!
I LOVE this new guy. And of course I’ve always loved Patrick Bailey, but there’s something about his demeanor, his self-confidence that makes you want to believe in him. Especially during his SF Giants debut last night. His name’s Blake Snell. I didn’t know much about him but there was hype all day in the Bay Area. So he throws his first pitch, and the second and the third, all balls, and then…

Books like Spatort
I sorted some books by how similar to Spatort they are.
Tumblr media
Was wir verschweigen, Arttu Tuominen: A cop has to investigate the murder committed by his childhood bestie. They have a history, 5* Very similar to Spatort
Short reviews:
The binding (Die verborgenen stimmen der Buecher) , Bridget Collins: Bad memories can be bound into books, to free your mind from them, but is this such a good thing? 5* lovely magical realism
Sleepers, Lorenzo Carcaterra: 4 teenagers get into trouble, consequences into adulthood, revenge served cold, 5* great story
Mystic River, Dennis Lehane: Cop investigates the murder of his childhood bff's daughter, other friend is the suspect, 5* very well told
The wishing game (Das Wunschspiel) , Patrick Redmond: boarding school in the 50s, black magic and toxic friendship (or could it be sweet and innocent?), 5* dark academia, couldn't stop reading
Garron Park, Nordika Night: Enemies to lovers with bad fathers and hurt/comfort, 4.5* it has only one bed trope while being enemies *chef's kiss*
Feldpost, Mechtild Borrmann: WW2 Germany, forbidden romance, 5* occasionally reads like ARD describing Spatort
A little life (Ein wenig Leben), Hanya Yanagihara: 4 friends living in New York, we follow Jude who never talks about his childhood, 5* like Spatort hurt/comfort fanfic without the comfort. Beautifully written
These violent delights, Micah Nemerever: 2 college friends from different backgrounds, 3.5* Story is kind of stupid and pointless but I enjoyed the toxic friendship/relationship
Violence begets, PT Denys: Teenagers helping each other survive with their bad fathers, romance ensues, ends badly, 4* there's a sequel but I didn't like how it continued.

March Elvis Review
Tumblr media
What a better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and Purim than to have a movie showcase both Irish and Jewish people. See back then boxing was a way for immigrants to make money. In New York, the Irish and Jewish immigrants came to the US in waves and often coincided. We see the Irish representation by having Grogan's fighter with the Shamrock on his robe. Father Higgins' was played by an actual Irish actor, Liam Redmond. Also if you look closely when Lew finds an old poster you can see the real life boxer, Jack Dempsey's name on it. Jack Dempsey of course was not only one of the biggest names in the boxing world, but he was also Irish.
Even though we don't have any canon evidence of a Jewish character in this movie, based on some of the names like Lieberman and Zimmerman we can assume they are Jewish. Lieberman especially is a last name commonly associated with Ashkenazi Jews. Also behind the scenes there were a lot of Jews and people of Jewish descent that were involved in this movie. Elvis was trained by Mushy Callahan. Mushy Callahan was Jewish and ended up changing his name to Callahan because of an Irish fight promoter. The actor who played Lieberman was Jewish. Ed Asner despite playing a bit part, was Jewish. Even Elvis himself through his parents lineage was both Irish and Jewish. Genealogists have in fact confirmed recently that Elvis did have a Jewish ancestor.
To me this movie acts like a great time capsule of what a small portion of New York was like back then. Even with the original 1937 movie, you get the idea that you're going back in time to when New York looked different.
Sound off down below if you like this movie or learned something new. If you want to continue to be tagged for my ECU content you can leave a note on this post:

hello hello hello random ass question but you're an English major and I want to know what your favourite books are and why thank you very much 🥰
Dear Laura,
hi hi hi!! You just asked what's probably my favorite question ever and of course, I got carried away. I'm sorry if this is too long!
Surprisingly enough, none of the books I had to read at uni are my favorite 😅 Obviously, I had to read the classics (Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights...) and I'm not a very big fan of those. They also forced Shakespeare down my throat for a couple of years and I ended up having a love/hate relationship with his works and his persona lol (I love the town where he was born, tho, it's my favorite town in England). 🤍
I read a lot, and I read a lot of everything. If you ever see my bookshelf you will see stuff ranging from Nicholas Sparks' novels to Stephen King's works (he's one of my fav authors) to some really fucked up stories like We Need to Talk about Kevin or My Absolute Darling (I actually loved these last two).
If you ever want to know, I have a favorite book for every genre. But my absolute all time favorite books are The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (I literaly cry for days every time I read this one).
The Thirteenth Tale is, most of all, a Gothic novel, and I love all things Gothic. This is definitely my go-to comfort read at any time. It has many classic Gothic elements and it can be somewhat predictable at times, but I was not expecting the plot twist toward the end. I love it for its setting in an abandoned manor and a main character with a quiet nature, who adores books and stories, and is emotionally scarred from childhood trauma.
I would define The Time Traveler's Wife as a romance novel with magical realism, and totally heartbreaking. It's got a touch of sci-fi with the time traveling thing, but it's not exactly what you would expect. I really don't like sci-fi stories and I think one of the reasons why I fell in love with this one is because of the way the author deals with that in the book. To summarize, the story follows Henry and Clare as they navigate life while coping with Henry's genetic condition, which causes him to randomly time travel. The curious thing about his condition is that, when he time travels, he often finds himself meeting Clare at different stages of her life; when she's a little girl, then a teenager, and then when she's an adult and they're married. The first time I read this book, I was a teenager and I found it really beautiful, innovating, and sad. The second time, I had already experienced being in love, so I felt everything between Henry & Clare's relationship on a deeper level, and towards the end, the story gets so heartbreaking that I was crying for days on train journeys, at work, and at home (I have to say that I'm a very sensible person and a crybaby lol).
However, there's also one other book that I read when I was 14 or so called The Wishing Game by Patrick Redmond that I've loved ever since, but its somewhat controversial for me because I fell in love with the 'villain' and was supportive of all his crimes 🫣 I think the reason why I empathized with him was because I read the story while I was in my teenage years, in my glorious high school days, and as most of us, I didn't really fit it, and sometimes I felt really neglected and angry, so I guess it was sort of comforting to read about a boarding school where the bullies start mysteriously dying 😶‍🌫️
What about you? Any favorite books? Oh, I love talking about books! This message put a big smile on my face sfsadfnsdsdfasjn 💞

📅   ‘We are told that Freud’s Last Session movie will be released around December’
Tumblr media
“We are told that Freud’s Last Session movie will be released around December” 2023!!! according to Lisa Adair, General Manager, The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI) via Northern Ireland World News (April 26, 2023)
Rosalyn51 Note: A theatrical release by December 31, 2023 qualifies the film for 2024 Oscars nominations! Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, etc. There is already incredible Oscars BuZZ (Variety)
Scenes from new movie starring Sir Anthony Hopkins shot in Whitehead
Filming has taken place in Whitehead for a new movie featuring acclaimed actors Sir Anthony Hopkins and Matthew GoodE.
Whitehead Railway Museum was the recent setting for scenes from ‘Freud’s Last Session’.
Set on the eve of World War Two in 1939, the film sees Sigmund Freud (Sir Anthony) invite Belfast-born Christian author CS Lewis for a debate on the existence of God. Having taken up the invite, CS Lewis, played by Goode, was present at Whitehead - suitably dressed as a rural Oxfordshire station - in order to catch the train to see Freud.
Also present were many extras, including a platoon of soldiers, a class of primary school children dressed for evacuation, and some of their ‘mothers’ to see them off.
Tumblr media
100-year-old steam engine No. 461 was used in the Whitehead film shoot (archive image).
The station building, which normally houses Platform 3 restaurant, underwent a makeover so that it looked like a period 1930s English railway halt.
The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI) laid on a train of 100-year-old steam engine No. 461, which is usually on display at the museum, plus three heritage carriages and a luggage van.
Tumblr media
The locomotive was out of steam but fitted with a steam machine, while the RPSI’s train rides steam engine No. 3BG was on hand to shunt the train up and down the siding as required. The train had to be filmed in three main positions:
Sitting stationary at the platform whilst passengers / evacuees embarked and disembarked;
Departing with CS Lewis aboard (in daylight);
Arriving back with CS Lewis having met Freud (in the dark).
Tumblr media

The weather was bright and sunny for the daylight shoots, and calm for the filming after darkness fell. The work was completed by 10.30pm [April 18, 2023] and a cheer went up from the cast and crew because this was the final sequence in the shoot.

Lisa Adair, RPSI general manager, said: “We are regularly in demand from film-makers because we can provide steam engines and vintage carriages. We are always pleased to be able to assist.
“We are told that Freud’s Last Session will be released around December, so we look forward to seeing the finished product in the cinema.”

No Reunion for Kandi and the Gang?
Tumblr media
I really wanted a reunion for this show.
It would’ve been interesting seeing them all together after all the jokes and shades in their confessionals.
But Kandi Burruss has her own YouTube channel “Speak on It” where she has invited the cast to talk about the episodes.
DonJuan Clark said that there’s multiple people who doesn’t like each other now because of what was said on the show.
And that’s why we need a reunion!
Are these interviews on Speak on It enough or will she have a reunion special about the show?
But since there’s no reunion, I’ll make a little post about my thoughts on the show.
I feel bad about being mean to Patrick Dallas. I was worried about him though, because he was whipped by Safari Foxe.
Torin Mitchell made a joke in his confessional about Safari being the (puppet) master when Patrick told him that he wanted to propose.
Everybody was sceptical of Safari, but she has not exactly been nice to the staff at OLG.
She’s not interested in having a relationship with them.
Safari became the low-key villain with her toxicity and strange insecurity.
It’s weird that she’s in the front of the cast photo, while Patrick and Brian Redmond are at the back of the cast photo.
Brian should’ve been in the front! He was the star of the show!
And I really enjoyed DonJuan on this show too.
I’ve already said on this blog that I didn’t like him on RHOA, and I think it was because I was buying Porsha Williams’ bullshit.
She had a vendetta against Kandi’s clique.
I think I would see the situations differently if I’m rewatching RHOA now that Porsha has fallen from grace.
One of the shadiest things this season was the relationship between the manager Brandon Black and the bartender Dom’Unique Variety.
I didn’t think that they were going to make it as a couple, but they’re apparently still together.
But 6 months later they still haven’t decided about how they should fix the situation.
So, it’s still possible for this to turn messy.

The Tailteann Games by P. J. Lynch
"In contrast to Irish attempts at a revival, the Irish in America saw them as not only as a means of showcasing Irish sports such as hurling, but as a rival to the popular Caledonian Games.
Proponents of the Tailteann Games were keen to connect the two events. At a banquet held by the Knights of Columba at Donnelly's Hotel, College Point, Long Island, following their "Outing and Games," Thomas Lonergan spoke of "The Celt in Field and Track Athletics," a speech "punctuated by applause from start to finish," according to the Gaelic American: "From time immemorial the sons of Erin have played a most conspicuous part in every branch of athletic sports. The Celt takes to athletics like a duck to water. Nearly all the world's champions and record holders in...athletics at present are Irish by birth or descent." Lonergan was keen to stamp the legitimacy of Ireland as the mother of sports:
When and where did athletic games originate? In Ireland, almost 2,000 years before the Christian era. The "Annals of the Four Masters" tell us that the Tailtan [sic] games were instituted in ancient Ireland at a place now known as Telltown.... Those games developed mighty heroes, the greatest of whom was Cuchullain, who has been aptly called the Hercules of Hibernia. The Anglo-Norman invasion put an end to the Tailtan [sic] games as a national festival, but foreign domination and persecution have been unable to destroy the physical vigor and scientific skill of the Celt, and today, after centuries of oppression, he stands out in bold relief, a champion in almost every branch of athletic sports, in Europe, Australia and America."
-Patrick R. Redmond, The Irish and the Making of American Sport 1835-1920
