For the Jack Aubrey the fact of no longer belonging to the Navy counted more than a thousand pillories, the loss of fortune, loss of rank, and loss of future. It was in a way loss of being, and to those who knew him well it gave his eyes, his whole face, the strangest look. Patrick O'Brian- The Reverse Of The Medal

in lieu of a long weekend
10pm, sunday, oct 8, 2023
it's canadian turkey-day tomorrow ~ it's windy and grey outside ~ there is pumpkin pie in the fridge and i'm wearing an extremely pleasing wooly sweater my housemate was going to give away. we've turned the heat on for the first time this season. the cozy season of the year has arrived.
reading finished victoria goddard's whiskeyjack, book 3 in the greenwing & dart series! reading this series for me is an exercise in noticing the easter eggs that tell me it was written by a medievalist, and an academic, and a medievalist academic with a degree from the program i'm currently in. there's so much in this particular volume about poetry analysis. she came so close to using the word 'semiotic' and actually did use the phrase 'exoteric.' while i might have quibbled about things like pacing and plot and how i still don't always think first-person is a good fit in the hands of most authors, these books are like tailor-made for me. i can't not enjoy them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then on the other hand, i spent some extremely happy hours this past week with patrick o'brian's post captain. when i first read the aubrey books, i was probably in high school, fresh out of racing through the hornblower series. because the aubreyad is-- i'll be honest-- better writing, but also demands more of you as a reader, i fully didn't appreciate like 80% of this book. i knew the series, as much by osmosis as by actual time spent reading, and reading it now? felt like coming home. especially since i now have the attention, and the ability, to read between the lines. to pick up on the irony, the allusions, the humor, the misdirection! the women oh my god how did i not appreciate sophie, diana, or mrs. williams before now. i didn't mind before how little of the larger world and society made it into the movie, but i actually understand the griping now. but even more than that, i found the ship action and actual, like, battle extremely tense and interesting this time; i was up well into the night at one point just to see what would happen next, because i was nervous for my dear boys.
watching friday night double-feature with @hematiterings where we enjoyed the first three new episodes of Our Flag Means Death and finished with another two of netflix's Arcane: League of Legends, which we're probably going to finish fairly soon so i'll focus on that one. just quickly though, had a great time with the first new ofmd episode, just extremely good work from all involved, and then was weirdly not as into the second two-- though the end of ep 3 was back to grand. i think in general i like where the season is going, and i'm going to withhold further comment until we've seen some more.
Tumblr media
i was not expecting to like arcane as much as i have been. didn't have a clue what it was when we started, but the art style has absolutely blown me away. here's a quick run-down of the animation, which is a mix of hand-painted digital, 2D, and absolutely gorgeous. it looks like a video game and a painting at the same time-- not in the same way spiderverse combines animation and illustration, but with some familiar elements. people's eyes have this amazing jewel-like depth and clarity? scenery that made us go 'oh, paris looks so nice!' and 'man i love cyberpunk' and other such witticisms. but seriously, if you like good animation and also art nouveau-inspired steam-punk aesthetics, there's a lot here. plus a good (dare I? could league of legends be good, actually?) tragic story-line, and enough twists that i haven't seen coming, to really get me curious about what comes next.
Tumblr media
listening a long time ago, probably back in 2021 around the time of the most recent album, i think @mankillercalledbunny was sharing playlists or links that featured The Amazing Devil, and at roughly the same time i had a spotify playlist include a track or two for me, and now here we are. had their two albums "ruin" and "the horror and the wild" on all week, which made it a bit hard to read at times because i would get caught in the lyrics. this is exactly the kind of music two people who met at the RSC would make, it is dramatic, sort of gothic, sort of folky, sort of theater. the contrary motion, the interweaving voices, esp. in the chorus of "marbles", is where i've been living recently. i like knowing this about joey batey, i like that he has this extra dimension now when i see him as jaskier! i hope he can find a way to come back to it again, whenever.
youtube
playing i finally (after how long!) got the wizard's ink well - witch's pendant - goblins (??) quest in stardew! not a hard one at all, but so satisfying to be able to use that hint that had been hovering there in the library for the past, oh, real-world year or so. i'm like 50 pieces of hardwood away from getting the ferry up and running too, and i'm excited to move off of the plateau i've been on and open up the next level of the world.
Tumblr media
making i mentioned the pumpkin pie up top, and it did turn out well this year despite a distracted me happening to leave out the butter when mixing the filling-- i noticed before it got into the oven, luckily, and was able to add it in! but...while it was in the pie crust, which was kind of sloppy. no nicely pinched or braided crust for me this year. and then, since the size of can of pumpkin you buy here is always a little too big for the recipe, i tried out the smitten kitchen pumpkin bread that many friends have recommended before, and that has been a delight. moist without being dense or heavy, but still very substantial? a little bit less sugar than the recipe called for, and no freshly ground nutmeg, but we did have fresh ginger and overall it is very nice. it also rose architecturally, which was maybe a function of it being on a higher rack? or of me miss-counting scoops of baking soda? anyway, hilarious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
working on working on consistency. working on momentum. working on not getting in my own way. draft of this conference paper due 10/26, slides and notes for this guest lecture due 10/25, and the chapter abides. the conference paper serves it directly, however, which i feel good about. i keep finding new things to read about, and keep being glad i've continued researching, since i'm coming up with excellent (it feels) material to work with, but i can't let that get in the way of actually. writing.

77 for Lucky Thirteen and 74 please!
also side note about 74, i wanted to ask this because i remember first reading Misalignment when you posted it anonymously. and i fell in love with the fic the same way i fell in love with the first chapter of Lucky Thirteen when you put that out. yet i didn't realize it was you until you de-anoned it and my immediate reaction was "it makes so much sense why I loved this fic, of course it was Azzy--no one else has a way of writing Sewis in a way that captivates me so easily"
Firstly, this was really lovely to read and you're so kind - thank you ❤️
74 you've posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you'd written it?
I was rumbled for 2/3 of my anonymous kinkmeme fills (including the stylistically very different regency au) so... there is clearly something! I don't consciously have a 'style', exactly, but there are a few things I have noticed about my own writing (trying not to be negative here is oddly hard):
A boring one: Longish phrases and abundant semicolons. I am a massive nerd for all regency/age of sail/Austenesque stuff but especially Patrick O'Brian (and Naomi Novik, by extension) and somewhere along the line that has embedded itself into my writing style. (Obviously the regency au was me giving that full rein haha.)
If I'm going to describe one thing about a scene, it's probably going to be the lighting (or if that scene is outside, somewhat predictably, the weather).
I try and make sentences and paragraphs aesthetically/rhythmically pleasing, and no I don't quite know what I mean by that either. You can't have too many sentences the same length or structure in a paragraph or - the wolves will get you? Fuck knows, but it Bothers Me if something doesn't feel right. I have no idea if that's apparent or even particularly pleasing to anyone else, though.
Other than that (and using UK -ise style with no serial commas thank you very much) I try very very hard with characterisation/realistic dialogue etc? But I'm definitely not unique in that so I'm not sure how you'd pick me out of a crowd. Sorry anon, this probably wasn't the most insightful answer!
77 Do you have a favourite scene you've written from Lucky Thirteen?
I think the scene I have the biggest soft spot for is Seb and Lewis' first kiss in chapter 7. It took a loooong time to get there, but I'd had it in my head since I started the first chapter and I think it came out more or less as I'd hoped - the nerves, the awkward unromantic setting, the build-up from the race beforehand (plus several chapters of sexual tension) and Seb's rollercoaster of emotions after. I had the biggest grin on my face while writing it.

14 Questions Tag Game
I was tagged by @poetikat, thank you very much :)
Nickname: online it's Key. I don't think I have a nickname IRL (people I know call me by the diminutive of my first name, which won't be revealed here :) ).
Sign: Leo. (I have no idea what that 'sun, moon, rising' means)
Height: 5'7 / 170 cm
Last thing I googled: either a phrase to check the translation to English, or... I don't remember :)
Song stuck in my head: none at the moment, thank goodness.
Amount of Sleep: usually around 7-8 hours, unless my cats decide otherwise.
Dream Job: I became a dentist because I had no idea what my dream job was when I was to make the decision of what to learn at uni, and thankfully I like my job. I still have no idea what my dream job is. (edit: dentistry was suggested by my family, as a half-joke. I was like, "okay!" and just went with it. I don't regret it.)
Wearing: jeans, a colourful t-shirt, and underwear. I'm at home now, so no socks.
Movies/Books/Media that Summarize You: oh jeez. I mean, I have a Quen Sign tattoo, so The Witcher is good, but other than that? Mind empty. I like to chill, so of games, there's Cities: Skylines right now, The Settlers and so on. I have no idea what other media would be a representation of me.
Favorite Song:
youtube
Instrument: unfortunately, none. I'd love to play a guitar, but I need my fingers intact at work. I'd say I love playing on other people's nerves, but it's a cheap joke and it's never been true for me. :)
Aesthetic: blue. Simple. Casual. Comfy. Could say boring, but I don't care :)
Favorite Author: back when I was still reading books... That was so long ago I'm actually sure :( I like the adaptations of some of Neil Gaiman's works. I was obsessed with Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, but I've never actually finished it. Frederick Forsyth's "Negotiator" was one of my fav books, but that's mostly because sassy, capable and traumatised is apparently my type of fav character.
Random Fun Fact: my English in my fics is usually better than here, because I tend to have a beta reader ;)

Title: To Have and To Have Not (Novel)
Author: Patrick O'Brian
Rating: 1/5 stars
Okay, let me get this straight. It's a military novel, set in the late 1930s. The central characters are (1) a hard-hearted Irishman serving under one of the British imperial powers and (2) a charming, romantic, well-educated, ambitious fellow officer serving under the same imperial power, one of whom ends up in the Navy. The former character is a Catholic who, on several occasions in the book, is shown as having at least some sympathy with the aims of the Axis powers, a fact which will probably not surprise anyone familiar with the book (it is, after all, War and Peace). At one point, during a crisis on the Eastern front, he and his officer exchange letters and poems, the latter of which includes the line "but the sun is in your eyes, and the salt of the sea is in your heart." At the end of the book, in a war with the Soviet Union, he dies fighting for a different imperial power. The other main character, one of the main characters is a young, well-educated and well-connected son of a major character, who is sent to one of the imperial powers on a study mission, the one which would be called a "mission to save the world." The character who is meant to be an idealist, but is not well-liked, dies after a very violent encounter with a Soviet colonel on the battlefield. The character who is meant to be realistic, but has no interest in a military career, joins a tank regiment as a gunner. We are also told that one of the main characters, who in earlier pages had shown a willingness to question his loyalty to his country and to accept the moral compromises demanded by wartime, was, by the end of the book, ready to return to his home country to serve in the ranks of its militaristic elite. All in all, the characters act as though the most realistic thing they have done is to go to officer's school.
The author of this novel was one of the most popular and successful writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a genre which has been called "hard, tough, masculine adventure." As such, one would expect an author of To Have and To Have Not to write about people who have been "tough, tough, macho," and be able to get their characters in situations where "real men" face the enemy, and where, in order to do things like "go to war," and "do good," one has to think about "having the courage to do what's right," and to deal with the problems posed by moral questions. To Have and To Have Not, of course, doesn't go there. Instead, we get a world in which the "real" heroes are people who will not be cowed, who will stand up to authority, who will do the right thing even when they are personally at risk for doing so, and who will not feel guilty when they do heroic things. We are told that the good people of the story would never be put to those sorts of challenges. Indeed, the character who in previous pages had shown such a willingness to think differently from the rest of his peers, does not even know he has any of the sort of courage that is shown to be such an important resource by this story.
I will try not to use the word "unrealistic," since as I said, realism is an aesthetic value, and To Have and Have Not does have some sort of realism to it, in that it is set in a world which does have wars, and the characters do have some capacity to act heroically in them. Rather, let's say that I would consider To Have and Have Not the polar opposite of "realistic." It's the sort of story about men who can do all of the hard things, where the hero is the one who is willing to accept the compromises of this world, and the story is about men who can do everything, except think about their place in society and the moral universe. This is the story of men who know what is right, except they don't, and the story is not about men who know what they should do, except they do.

How did you come up with the characters you play or what inspired you?
So, Anon, got you ask a bit ago but had to think on it because I was genuinely curious about what inspired me for each and hope this is at least a decent answer!
So for Tray, he was made as after a series of chars I made for FF14 that didn't click. I decided I wanted to make a character that was extremely outgoing and social so it would be easy to get rp in game. After that, I wanted to challenge myself and make a bit of a chill pacifist that was more excited about life than most. After that his entire yoga and moko stick was born because at the time I was really getting into yoga myself and felt it was a good trait to give to someone that dealt with a lot of mental issues by abusing drugs to calm himself down and yoga would help. I made him a sailor and drug smuggler because I love all things Pirate and nautical. Of course 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was an inspiration and I think some Jack Sparrow ended up inside Tray but I also grew up reading Patrick 'O'Brian novels and loved the series and all the ocean going adventures so making him a sea-going smuggler just felt fun. Plus I love Limsa so was another great excuse. Now Tray has changed ALOT since I first made him. He's become almost a case study for how power and absolutely warp someone and his mind is rather shattered at this point, though most people don't see his psychotic episodes. But RP is always fun and can change them. I'd say Tray became more defined THROUGH RP than how I started. He was more vague at the start and has become very painted and defined now after five years playing him. Now for Krick. Krick was defined very well AT THE START. See, growing up, I was introduced at an early age to the Warhammer Fantasy universe and setting by picking up a game called Mordhiem randomly at a store. I didn't play it much, but I fell in love with the lore and the Grimdark theme. I'd say Warhammer Fantasy's lore and aesthetic overall influenced my writing more than anything. Grew up reading the novels and C.L Werner is an amazing author that does NOT get enough recognition for his talent with the written word. So my view of necromancers and the undead are very inspired by this world and I had long written necromancers or day-dreamed their adventures so it was a theme I was well versed in. So when I made Krick, I took the flavor of the Warhammer world and found out how necromancy works inside FF14 (Which there is a surprising amount of Lore in-game that I didn't know until I started researching) and found a great way to theme the lore-friendly necromancy with the grimdark I enjoyed. Krick was meant to be an NPC sort of villain and first that's what he was, this scheming villain in the dark shadows of the world, lurking and waiting to ruin the lives of anyone he needed to further the cause of his secret order. He was very easy to slip in and play and write. He was given a awful backstory to help explain his shift to being such a cruel person and it was more in depth than almost any other character I'd written if I am being honest. I'm almost sad most people won't learn about it. LOL. So essentially, Tray was a yogi smuggler meant to get me rp by being fun and Krick was my chance to bring my love for Grimdark necromancy into an rp scene. Hope this answered you question. Also, since some may guess, yes the 'Vampire Coast' is my favorite faction in Warhammer 2 to play as since it mixes my love of the sea and the undead into one beautiful mix. In fact I like the aesthetic so much, I even had a work commission inspired by the faction, inspiration that played a large roll in Krick's back story. So here, enjoy that one. XD

An enormous flash lit the sky, dazzled them, put out the stars; and nearly two minutes later the vast solemn long rumbling boom reached them, prolonged by its own echo off the African shore.
'What was it?' asked Stephen at last.
'The ship blew up.'

Comment I saw on a book thread
“Some years ago we had people over for dinner. The talk turned to an oddity of military history, the fact that women are MUCH more interested in the Napoleonic Wars than in any other. The women at the table agreed. Two of them liked Patrick O'Brian, for instance. We came up with these (partial) explanations: 1. Uniforms were at their absolute aesthetic peak. 2. It's Jane Austin's era, from which most romantic fiction springs. (And note that Austin, like O'Brian who drew upon her, appeals to the other sex.) 3. The two greatest commanders had love lives you can make movies about. 4. It's vast. Three of the four guys were military nerds, and not one of us could concisely enumerate the coalitions. Anyway, I know the phenomenon is real. I often go to military history boards , and the [females] are few and far between.   Except Napoleonic, there are many girls there.”
UPDATE: Another commenter said women get interested in this era by reading Regency romances and seeing Sean Bean in Sharpe’s Rifles. This was not the case with me but I can’t speak for everyone.

“I say these damned things,’ Jack went on, musing as they drank their bottle, ‘and don’t quite understand at the time, though I see people looking black as hell, and frowning, and my friends going “Pst, pst”, and then I say to myself, “You’re brought by the lee again, Jack.”
