#part time architecture jobs sydney
super tired tonight so can't do it now, but i want to think about syd's arc for this season. some quick bullet points so i remember some thoughts i'm having now:
storer's "this is a coming of age" also applies to her
partnership - the fact that sydney wants this and seeks it out; that she wants it from carmen; that she gets it in richie
sydney and leadership - what others have noted about syd seeking leadership guidance from carm, and instead getting it (creating it for herself) from coach k's biography
sydney as a leader - the fact she wants to be one, and be a good one; how she promotes tina, hires nat, sends marcus to copenhagen, posts and monitors boh job post and hires boh, gives marcus the go ahead to fire someone, tells richie drive, tells the crew to follow the sound of her voice, and when tina says "but carmen" she says "well *i* say"--not only does she actively invest in the futures of her crew, she spends time thinking about how they can grow and what she can do to help them, and she also builds the team she works with (mikey hired the old crew, syd hires the new crew)
sydney and anxiety - her experience with her own business failing, and seeing so many restaurants she loves with peers she admires shutting down; how she's been called "green and inexperienced" but she tells her dad she doesn't know if she has another one in her--she's tired
the fact that syd has an entire network of contacts in the fine dining scene all across chicago
her creativity - architecture is the mother of all arts, and architecture is what most influences her work. it makes her food uniquely "chicagoan" because it's influenced by chicago architecture.
sidenote: speaking of chicago and architecture, candyman is set in chicago. when i saw the 2021 version, i was struck by how the buildings were filmed, and i was reminded of those arial shots in how the bear shot chicago architecture and also how the camera moved through and around the city with sydney
how syd's first stab at creating a menu with tina as her sous mirrors how she speaks--just as words spill out her mouth, her menu is eclectic, varied, fun, and also overwhelming, too much; it's almost like her menu is a close reflection of how she thinks
her dad tells her she's like her mom, but everything syd knows of her mom she likely learned from her dad
how defensive she gets when she's questioned about her decisions re: her work
how he engenders change in people--tina, carmen, richie
in s01 she was framed in such particular ways: backlit, in doorframes/openings, closing the circle of the bear crew; i want to go back through s02 o see if she's framed visually in certain ways. what i remember a lot of is seeing the world from her pov, with the camera showing us a part of her face in profile. also the last shot of the season being her wobbly smile.
how a good amount of her anxiety about her work is about reassuring her dad that she's doing something worthwhile. how once he eats her food he gets it.

Why are residential painters Sydney-wide in demand?
In the city of Sydney, with its beautiful architecture and picturesque neighborhoods, there is a growing need for residential painters. From traditional cottages to high rise apartments, homeowners all over Sydney are looking for professional painters to freshen up and revitalize their living spaces.
Tumblr media
But why are residential painters so popular in Sydney? Let’s explore the reasons behind the popularity of residential painters and why they’re in high demand.
Enhancing home aesthetics
A fresh coat of paint adds curb appeal, character and personality to a home. Whether it’s to update outdated colors, cover up wear and tear or add a splash of color to your interiors, a new coat of paint will help you achieve your desired look and create a space you can be proud of.
Increasing property values: investing in home improvement
As Sydney’s real estate market continues to boom, homeowners are seeking ways to increase their home’s value. Investing in home improvement, such as painting, can provide a great return on your investment. Painting can help you improve the value of your home, attract buyers, and increase your selling price. Whether you’re renovating your kitchen, remodeling your bathroom, or completely revamping your interiors, you can count on residential painters to help you achieve your goals.
Renovations and Remodels: transforming living spaces
With Sydney’s fast-paced real estate market on the rise, homeowners are increasingly turning to residential painters to bring their renovation ideas to life. From preparing your home for sale to investing in long term property maintenance, our experienced painters will work closely with you to ensure you get the best results. From expert advice to color consultations to flawless paint application, we’ll help you get the most out of your renovation project.
DIY limitations
Many homeowners in Sydney understand the limitations of painting projects on their own. DIY enthusiasts may not have the skills, experience, or attention to detail needed to get the job done right. With the help of professional painters, you can be sure that your painting project will be done to the best of your ability. From the preparation of the surface to the expert application of the paint, the professional painters will ensure that your painting project is done to the highest standard.
Outsourcing painting projects
Outsourcing painting projects is a great way to save time and money. With professional painters taking care of all aspects of your painting project, from the prep work to the cleanup, you can enjoy the results of your painting project without the hassle and stress of doing it yourself.
Expertise in color selection
Hiring a residential painter in Sydney can be a daunting task when it comes to choosing the right colors for your home. With so many options on the market, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where professional painters come in. They are experts in color selection and can help you find the perfect hues that match your style, your preferences, and your existing decor. Whether you’re looking for a trend-led neutrals or a bold accent color, a professional painter can provide you with the insight and guidance you need to find the right color scheme for your home.
Professionalism and reliability: peace of mind
When you hire a professional painter in Sydney, you can be sure that you’re in good hands. Homeowners value professionalism and reliability, and hiring a reputable painting company means you’ll be working on projects that are safe, efficient, and of the highest quality.
Long term maintenance
Residential painting is an essential part of protecting and preserving your home from the harsh elements that Sydney's climate has to offer. Homeowners rely on professional painters to provide durable, weather resistant, long-lasting protection from moisture, UV rays and other environmental elements. Regular painting maintenance can help extend the life of your exterior surfaces, prevent damage and deterioration, and save you money on costly repairs in the future.
Conclusion
In summary, residential painters are in high demand in Sydney due to the following reasons:
improving home aesthetics
increasing property values
reinventing and remodeling projects
DIY limitations
time and convenience
color selection
profession and reliability
long-term maintenance needs
As Sydney homeowners continue to recognize the value of professional painting services, there will be increasing demand for residential painters Sydney-wide.

( willa, she/they, 23, GMT-6 ) woah! was that ERIK DESTLER walking down main street? i heard they’re not actually from ivy cove but come from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. they’re 32 and live in CORDOVA GROVE but watch out because they can be SARCASTIC + ANGRY but are actually INTELLIGENT + TALENTED. despite them NOT HAVING memories, you’ll always think of PORCELAIN MASK COVERING HALF OF FACE, DEXTEROUS FINGERS GRACING PIANO KEYS, EQUAL PARTS HAUNTING AND BEAUTIFUL, TROLLING PEOPLE INTO BELIEVING YOU’RE A GHOST, SEWER GREMLIN when imagining them. / ben barnes, he/him
Cis Man, he/him
Suburb: Cordova Grove
Personality description: Give a brief description of what they are like with strangers, casual friends, and loved ones, or a general overview of what they are like and why you chose their traits.
Simply put, Erik is a pain in the ass. He’s dramatic, commanding, pompous, particular, and just overall annoying to deal with. Not to mention he’s elusive, only a few select people have actually seen him. His reputation as the Opera Ghost or The Phantom of the Opera has made him too intimidating and scary for anyone to really challenge much against him. He is, unfortunately, very talented and very good at running the Opera Populaire.
He’s not close with many people. He relies on his elusiveness to maintain some control of the opera. Erik also has a history of people abandoning him or running away because of the deformity that covers half of his face. So he doesn’t let people in and choses to embrace his threatening aura and use it to his advantage. But, should anyone somehow find him, should someone explore the opera house after hours, they may find themselves speaking to a ghost.
He’s very kind to those he likes and those close to him. He’s very wise and obliging, willing to do anything for those who have stuck around long enough to know there’s more to him than just The Phantom of the Opera.
His life before Sydney was quite adventurous. He was born in France to a single mother out of wedlock. When his mother rejected him because of his deformity, Erik ran away as soon as he could. He was young when he was found and taken to be an act in a travelling carnival. It was there were he was horribly treated and jeered because of his deformity.
When he escaped from the carnival, he travelled. He was taken in by an old man on the outskirts of Paris. Erik learned to play piano here and picked it up with incredible easy. He was playing and writing music by the time he was six.
After the old man passed, Erik took up different jobs, quickly picked up skills to make money. He learned to build, to draw, to create things, but music made him the most money. He played violin on the streets, enduring the stares and harsh words from people until he had enough money to survive.
For a time, he lived in Persia, entertaining the king with his music and innovations. He learned a lot about architecture to make improvements to the king’s palace.
He returned to Paris and met Charles Garnier. He helped the man design the Garnier Opera House, which is how he learned to build his own secret hideouts and catacombs in the opera he built in Sydney.
Erik doesn’t remember anything of what happened in the plot of The Phantom of the Opera. He’s a much more rational person than in the cannon musical...which is saying a lot. He isn’t murderous or violent, just a prick mostly.
if anyone can actually manage to see him, he almost always wears a black and white suit with a black bowtie. Every strand of his dark hair is in place, making his white mask all the more striking. Because he can’t help but being dramatic, he has a silver band on his pinky and a ring with a dark red gem on his ring finger. Sheet music is so often found in his hand that it may as well be a part of his wardrobe.

How do I educate people about the Sustainable Development Goals? I had thoughts, lots of them, after I presented on them last Wednesday but, like the location of the pieces of paper I wrote on, whatever the buzz of conversation and performer’s high had me thinking is long forgotten. So it’s back to having ideas and hoping I come up with something better now that it’s a little more processed, a bit more mature. How do I start us from an ecological foundation? Just like I already did. With the diagrams explaining, this is where we get everything we need to survive from, how do I drive this point home? Have I already? The ideas are rolling now. Can I fit this into six minutes? How do I go from concept to reality? I know I’m just rusty, my confidence dwindling, and it’s going to take me doing it to remember the dopamine. Take your time. Pretend the planet it your brain, the sustainable development principles to transformational overhaul written in the stars of your neurons, you just can’t help but get it out. Are the templates distracting me, do I need to mock up a blank power point given that’s what I learned on?
It helped, drawing it out on paper. Templates look beautiful, and are lovely to look at. They’re not sensory overload in and of themselves, but, they’re not the new world, the blank canvas that inspires creativity. Every complete picture is a demand of itself, it’s perfect as it is, why would you add your own colours, why would you decorate what’s already been decorated? Why would you graffiti professional perfection? So I draw it on a scrap of people, pretend it’s on a moodboard, pretend I’m in PDF expert on my iPad at sixteen again, turning what’s barely inspiration into those design folios I was famous for. Why can’t I forget it? Because it’s me, it’s what I stand for, creativity in my veins, trying to be spit out of my fingertips on a keyboard and mouse. I’m trying to educate souls, don’t you forget that.
Educating souls. And now I’m onto brainstorming the third section. This one covers eight goals, covers the things of the people I carry as part of me, eight billion of us all deserving of dignity if any of us are. Drowning out competition with connection. It’s solid, it’s tangible, it’s the meals each of us need to survive and the education that keeps us empowered, knowing how to care for this beautiful planet. It’s the wage from our jobs that have us as individuals, countries, families, able to afford healthcare (which in of itself shouldn’t be for profit. Nor should food, or housing). It’s the cities I dream of designing, graffitiing functionality in every corner of the world, it’s the wildlife bursting into our apartment bubbles and humans who feel happier for it. It’s gender equality built into the architecture of how we do life: lifestyles that support empowerment of all living things, lifestyles of satisfaction and the only real power coming from when we team up with each other, not when we exploit each other. It’s easy to get lost in the daydream. Because I make a life out of this, of bringing people together, I make a life of it despite how many times I’ve messed up, despite the youth that was stolen and filled with mistakes, despite and because of it. (I should take this song off repeat, really, before I hop on the next train to Sydney to see the sunrise again. I feel it in moments, a semblance of free, between all the gasping I finally breathe, but this is it, isn’t it? this is me breathing.) I’m channelling just how important it is.
Because if you care about me, you care secondhand about all the people I care about, just like when you follow a musician, you take on the love from all of their fans, and if you understand a character, you understand the people who feel the same way as you do. If you love me, if you truly love me and don’t want to change me, you love all that I stand for. You stand with me as we mobilise this love. If not, then what do I exist for?
But this is my work, these are people I’m educating who don’t have access to my soul the way that you can, in anonymity and solidarity over shared interest. These are the sharks, and I’m trying to capture whatever in them turns their stupid overconfident heads on and stops them mistaking surfers for turtles, stops them eating turtles at all actually, and shows them we have invented a new-old, more efficient and kinder way to survive. It’s a pity that the way we have to pitch it is that businesses won’t survive if they’re not nice. I feel like I’m back out on the property, when my guineas were younger, trying to tell them how their own pecking order works: it’s a form of discipline, the more people you piss off the more likely it is they’ll band together against you. Maybe you won’t quite be ganged up on or cancelled, but your competitive advantage will be gone. If you don’t what? Feed the poor? Support the latest in sustainable cities, be the power mobilising their creation? If you don’t do this? Who else will?
And that’s it, isn’t it? Everyone wants to be told that they’re the chosen one, chosen to save the world. And it’s not a fantasy, the mundane ways this happens every day. I’m Yoda or Gandalf or heck, even Magnus Bane and I’m here directing them, advising them, praying they use the power that somehow ended up in their hands for good and not evil. And I have to do this educating, advising, in a way that is accessible and hits home. Luckily I’m well versed in fiction. I’m well versed in art. I’m well versed in capturing people’s souls. So what do I do now? Why am I sitting here thinking, well, school shouldn’t be a babysitting device for capitalist labour of adults but teach in a way that I’m teaching now, if you’re a musician going on tour or an athlete off competing or if you need any kind of accommodation, you should be able to finish high school. Without being given extra burdens. Is this the ground that I’m building? The trend that I’m setting? Am I embodying Goal 5 into this power point presentation, along with one, two, three, four, seven, eleven and sixteen? People need to be fed, right, I can’t grow cucumbers out of a computer screen, no matter if it’s an Apple.
I’m thinking of cities now. In Southeast Asia, where my colleagues work, and in Australia with a tenth of the population of Indonesia: how much could we do if our cities were bigger but more sustainable? How much could we meet people’s needs?
And so I come down to earth. This is the start of it. Revolutionary change starts with the mundane, educating a bunch of businessheads from all sorts of backgrounds: these are the Sustainable Development Goals, this is how they fit together, they are your next big opportunity whether you like it or not, so what do you think? Do you want to embark on the hero’s journey, or are you content being a poorly executing, always in the way not doing much useful, not meaning evil but not meaning well and so never really meaning anything at all, soon to be defeated, villain? You can’t walk in these circles without being one or the other.

How Important is the Rendering of a Home?
Globally, the construction market is valued at billions of dollars. In 2021 alone, finally it was predicted to be worth about $24334.9 billion. In construction, 3D renders play a huge role though before we go for it to have a look at how important rendering is for your home, let’s first have a look at the concept of rendering.
Rendering in Sydney (or rendering Sydney) has always been a part of interior decoration or design for a very long time now. These experts help clients realize a finished room would appear like when job continues to be completed.
In rendering, the builders and architects we work with often get to decide on the substances, colours, furnishings, and textures based on the renders. Usually, after a few tweaking, architects you'll be able to match their designs because of their client's expectations. Even then, the value of rendering (or 3D renders) in building or construction can't be overlooked.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at what architectural rendering means and the way you can benefit from it.
What is architectural rendering?
In architecture, “rendering” is a term used to refer to the thought of communicating a structure via 3D crafted designs. You can reveal it’s the process of modelling, lighting, texturing, and rendering 3D designs as videos or images.
The designs are computer-generated photorealistic renderings which might be first understood via the architects before being conveyed because of their prospective clients. It’ll interest you to know that the rendering process actually begins prior to a main building process kicks off.
Within the architectural industry, 3D architectural visualisation this is usually a recent development that crafts three-dimensional photorealistic renders using computer software. The models from the software program are not only accurate but also highly detailed. In terms of details, shadow and sunlight effects can be added so clients get the texture of actually walking within the property.
How Important that is the Rendering of a home?
There are lots of benefits that rendering a home offers also in this part, we’ll be looking at a couple of them.
Aids by way of conveying the vision
With rendering, the actual image of a building may be presented via its design. Do you know the way sometimes you get an idea about what you would like something to appear to be? Then you explain it to a person they usually go-ahead actions you need to take one thing you didn’t inquire about? All that can be avoided with rendering.
With rendering, the architect should be able to teach you 3D designs of both the interior and outside of the building. Which means that you’ll be capable of show the architects where you have concerns or convey your architect if you are satisfied when using the design.
Now, if any reservations need addressing, expert architects will deal with it before finalizing the design. This manner, whether it be texture, material, and even detail differences, these experts will piece all of it together.
Once the design is complete with none reservations, construction companies can get started building the product by putting each brick following the the rendered image. This way, with the highly-detailed design, there’s no room for errors.
It’s cost-effective
Think about this: give huge amounts of cash, investment, and time just to understand that this project you hard work on this can be a failed project. That’ll be bad, right? Exactly, that’s why companies love with the ability to visualize the construction project before building.
If you try to figure it out, it’s really a vital and could be is as it helps realtors and construction companies visualize and make changes (changes that may have charge a nominal fee if the project had started without visualization) before introducing the project.
Hiring the advice of 3D architects will not simply benefit you during the construction but additionally after the construction because the designs can be used over social media or via advertisement to save lots of the price of marketing.

How to write an EA-approved career episode for CDR Report?
The Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is an assessment route for applicants whose qualifications are not recognized by the Washington, Sydney, and Dublin Accords. The major purpose of the CDR Report is to demonstrate how much ability, talent, knowledge, and skills one possesses to be eligible for skilled professional employment in any country region. This route also permits applicants to earn permanent residency. We have already covered key portions of the CDR report, and this section will explain why a career episode is an important aspect of the skill assessment path.
You must grasp how to appropriately build career episodes to showcase your education and previous work experiences. Engineers Australia will be more likely to accept your application if you offer your engineering education and career accomplishments in the exact format stated. A total of three career episode reports are required, which might be from your university years, professional employment years, or training time.
Your career episodes represent your educational background and engineering work experience. The episodes are based on three unique engineering projects completed over time. Engineers Australia Career Episodes provide thorough information about the engineers' technical and non-technical abilities. In your career episodes, you must demonstrate your professional qualities.
These are the entities that should be included in your career episode:
The complete project report on which you are currently or have previously worked.
A properly completed engineering educational program.
The specific designation that was recently or once gained.
You devised certain problem-solving approaches.
Career episode format
It is a report that you have completed or are currently working on. It could be any academic project or participation in a program throughout your engineering study. It is a list of job obligations allocated to you at work. For your CDR Report, you must create three distinct Career Episodes. Each Career Episode has four sections: introduction, background, personal engineering activity, and conclusion.
Introduction to the project
The first chapter of the Career Episode is available here. This section should be no more than 100 words long and include information about the project's name, when it occurred, where you worked, and your contribution.
Background of the project
The following segment of the career episode is approximately 200-500 words in length. In this section, you should provide detailed descriptions of the nature of the project, its goals, and your participation in it.
Personal engineering activity
This part will require you to describe what you did in this project, including which technical approaches you used to handle obstacles, how you worked as a team, and how you came up with new ideas. You are evaluating your abilities, not the effectiveness of your team. Rather than focusing on what your team has done, provide precise specifics about your accomplishments.
Summary
Finally, somewhere between 50 and 100 words, explain all you wrote in the previous sections. So, if you follow these simple steps, your report will be fantastic.
Essential points to remember while writing your Career episode
Your career episode should demonstrate the appropriate context in which you worked or studied. You should also include the following information:
It should describe the overall scope of your engineering project.
The primary goal and objective of your project
The specific component of your work that has been highlighted
It includes an organization chart that shows your position in the organization's architecture.
Your responsibilities must be clearly stated.
EA approved career episodes with these guides
1. Project reports
Select initiatives that showcase the significance of your job and the organization and those that demonstrate your talents and abilities. Choose academic endeavors that have the potential for future scalability and play an important part in completing and accomplishing desired goals. You have to list all the engineering activities you are or have previously participated in. These can be projects, internship experience, and other competitions that can be discussed in detail, emphasizing your role in the projects. EA evaluators are more concerned with the individual's contribution than with the project's overall efficiency.
2. Mention your part in-depth
The charts, statistics, and so on may emphasize your participation in your project, and they demonstrate your involvement in the work and technical skills. You should use the active voice in this report. Among other examples, you might write: "I prepared," "I calculated," etc.
3. Reference from professionals
You can get ideas from the samples offered by skilled CDR Writers and leading websites. Pre-approved examples from EA are recommended for guidance purposes.
4. Adhere to EA rules
Engineers Australia has a very rigid format for career episodes, unlike some other organizations. Hence, you can check the MSA (Migration Skills Assessment Booklet) for more information.
5. Content of the project
Avoid technical jargon, arbitrary charts, graphs, etc. Use simple English language with important data, facts, and accomplishments, and each episode should be 1000-12500 words long.
Why do we recommend CDRWritersHub?
CDRWritersHub takes pride in providing plagiarism-free CDR writing services to our clients, which is one of the requirements for moving to Australia. Our professionals are well-versed in the CDR engineer rules in Australia and would gladly assist you with your report. We've included CDR samples from various ANZSCO occupations for your convenience.

Intro || Erik Destler
Look who just woke up- is that BEN BARNES? No, I must have been mistaken, that’s ERIK DESTLER from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I heard he is THIRTY-TWO and stuck here just like everyone else. Even in the 20’s, they still give off a/an PORCELAIN MASK COVERING HALF OF A FACE, DEXTEROUS FINGERS GRACING PIANO KEYS, EQUAL PARTS HAUNTING AND BEAUTIFUL impression. They’re known to be quite BRILLIANT, but have a tendency to be DRAMATIC on their bad days. ( willa )
Cis-Man, he/him
Erik has been in Sydney for four years, in his memories and in real life.
City CBD
Personality description : Give a brief description of what they are like with strangers, casual friends, and loved ones, or a general overview of what they are like and why you chose their traits.
Sheet music is so often found in his hand that it may as well be a part of his wardrobe.

the many lies of kanzaki hitomi to her long-suffering best friend uchida yukari
summary: when hitomi is on time to their weekend coffee time, yukari knows something is up.
notes: because I utterly adore escaflowne in ways that I don’t know if I can truly describe, and the wonderful @wuzzyletoastermac recently finished the show, I couldn’t not attempt a post-series write-up about...the best friend who’s only in four episodes. (I just love van and hitomi so much). G, hitomi and yukari friendship, van/hitomi mention. 1450 words.
---
Yukari knows it’s something big when Hitomi makes time to meet for coffee on a Saturday. Normally, Hitomi—best friend since forever, national track star at the age of 18, certified social worker, truly wonderful person, etc. etc.—is off with her long-distance boyfriend, or coaching track, or coaching track with her long-distance boyfriend looking pleasantly befuddled at the whole proceedings. On a rare occasion, she’ll ask Yukari for help getting Van into what can politely be termed “normal people clothes,” and Yukari can spend most of the afternoon puzzling over Van’s absolutely bizarre accent and failing to get either of them to tell her where exactly in Greece she can find someone as hot as Van Fanel.
Hitomi swears up and down that they started dating while she was doing a study abroad in Australia her second year of uni, but that doesn’t explain why the poor man 1: doesn’t speak English at least on par with an average high schooler’s cram school classes, and 2: doesn’t own a single pair of jeans not currently in residence in Hitomi’s closet. The Greeks aren’t that weird. Besides, half of Yukari’s architecture clients are based in America. She knows weird. And even by those standards, Van is weird.
Not to mention there’s some nagging part of Yukari’s brain that seems to recognize Van. It’s bothered her since they first met, and the last three years have done nothing to assuage that feeling. How silly to believe that they met in a dream or a vision. That is certainly more Hitomi’s realm.
But he loves Hitomi. It’s impossible to unsee that deep unending well of affection in his dark eyes, the soft smile that makes him look ages younger whenever she’s around, how patient he is even when she’s determined to find the perfect sweater for a job interview or the exact right cafe she claims was there the last time she was in this part of Asakusa. Occasionally, he’ll even catch her before she wanders too far afield, hand tight on her wrist in a way that speaks both to his own nerves wandering around in a crowded city (again, Hitomi went to uni in Sydney, why is Tokyo that much different) and to the way Hitomi turns back to him like a flower blooming in sunshine, all blushing cheeks and bright smile and alive in ways Yukari only wishes she could feel.
So Yukari’s a little jealous. It’s hard not to be. If it weren’t for the occasional argument blowing Hitomi’s temper sky high and Van’s own anger coming out in blistering tension, or the way that Hitomi will sometimes spend more time complaining about the weekend she’d had with him than bothering to answer any of Yukari’s questions about where exactly they’d met up, she’d worry that Van actually was perfect.
Okay well, no one she has to force into jeans against their will is perfect. Especially someone who looks like that.
So Yukari has kindly deigned to meet with her best friend at their favorite cafe on a beautiful Saturday morning, despite everything (Hitomi’s boyfriend and Yukari’s desire to sleep until 3pm respectively). Something’s off.
And when she rounds the corner at 10am on the dot, Kanzaki Hitomi is already there sipping a latte with Yukari’s favorite sitting there, still steaming. Hitomi is never on time. For anything. Ever. If she is, it’s because of her long legs and bizarre luck.
Something is definitely off.
“Yukari! I got you coffee,” she says, bright guileless grin on her face.
Yukari sits and sips. Sweet, caffeinated bliss. She almost forgives Hitomi the hour.
Not enough to loosen her suspicions, though. “Hitomi, what are you up to?” she says once her brain is active.
“Ah, well.” Hitomi casually brushes non-existent lint off her jacket sleeves. “I wanted to tell you something.”
“Is it about Van?” When her best friend’s face turns a bright pink, Yukari’s eyebrows rise. “Is he moving here?”
Head shake no. Hm.
“Did he finally take his jeans home?”
Deeper flush.
“Are you pregnant?”
“Yukari!” Hitomi screeches, face luminescent and voice far too loud for the little cafe. A few of the other patrons, including some who clearly have had as much sleep as Yukari, turn and glare at them, and Hitomi clasps hands over her own face. Yukari tries to not laugh, really. “I’m—no. And if you’re gonna be a jerk, I won’t invite you to my wedding.”
Any and all feelings of malicious annoyance vanish in an instant. “You’re—Hitomi! Congrats! That’s amazing, when are you getting married? Where are you getting married? If Van’s not moving here, does that mean you’re—where is he these days, is it going to be big or small? What should my dress look like? Do you have the colors picked out?”
Hitomi giggles through her fingers, a little on edge and clearly overwhelmed. “That’s too many questions!”
“I can write them out in a list and email them if you’d rather.”
A high-pitched whine more like a tea kettle than a woman in her mid-20s erupts out of Hitomi, and she drops her face to the table in her best impression of a puddle of melted ice cream. “I wanted to tell you properly, you know,” she mutters.
“You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t let it slip on accident,” Yukari says. As much fun as it is to mercilessly toy with her best friend who completely deserves it, there are more pressing matters, particularly Yukari’s own calendar that she is going to completely shuffle around. “But before I spend the next three hours getting you to spill every detail, at least tell me when and where.”
Without moving her face off the table, Hitomi rustles in her purse, pushing a pair of envelopes at Yukari. The first is a classic wedding invitation, cream colored envelope brushed with elegant black kanji. It’s exactly what Yukari would have expected from Hitomi’s mom, who has handled the years after her husband’s death with astonishing grace. But the second…
The parchment—it’s too thick to be paper, fibrous and off-white and flecked with gold—is about as wide as Yukari’s hands spread apart, and covered in a mix of runes and curling symbols that spread across the top of the invitation like wings. In the center of the whole thing is burnt a diamond-shaped emblem with a winged dragon. It doesn’t look like any Greek Yukari has ever seen.
“Would you be the host for my reception? It’s in a month and a half,” Hitomi is asking, which under any other circumstance would send Yukari into delighted peals of laughter. She’s a planner by nature, and organizing something as momentous as Hitomi’s small wedding will be worth every moment of her best friend and her boyfriend making sappy eyes at each other.
“Of course I will,” Yukari says, distracted. Social work doesn’t pay enough for an invitation this fancy, and Van can’t even afford his own clothes. And it’s not in Japanese, or English, and is that real gold? “What is this?”
Hitomi rubs nervous circles around her latte mug. “Since Van’s not from here, and the only person who can travel is his sister, we thought, you know. One wedding here for me, one there for him.”
“Sounds great,” Yukari says, turning the parchment upside down and over onto its back, hoping that the meaning will magically appear. “Hitomi, I can’t read this.”
“Oh, right. Sorry, Yukari.” Hitomi passes a hand over the parchment, the ring on her hand glimmering bright pink in the sun, and the runes curl and shift before Yukari’s eyes like…like magic. Yukari resists the urge to rub her eyes. Magic isn’t real. Just like dragons aren’t, or friends vanishing into pillars of light.
Your presence is requested at The marriage of Van of Fanelia and Hitomi Kanzaki White, 12th Moon Present invitation upon arrival
“It’s almost like a destination wedding!” Hitomi says. “Will you come? Please? Only Mom and my brother can come, and you know Sota hates this sort of thing.”
The things Yukari does for Hitomi. “Of course I will,” she says. But before Hitomi can relax too much, she reaches across the table and grabs her best friend’s hands, digging in just a little too hard. “But Hitomi, for once, don’t lie to me about this: where on earth is Van even from?”
Hitomi gives a little hiccup of a laugh and refuses to meet Yukari’s eyes. “So, funny story…”
——
“You owe me so much cake, Kanzaki Hitomi.”
“I promise, at least one at the wedding!”
“Each wedding.”

Flower Trains and Musicality
Seeing an old bridge as we drove along the new Grafton Bridge towards the place we were staying at, my mother immediately wanted to find a way to get close and snap a photo. Put upon by my mother’s disappointment that she hadn’t been able to do it when we arrived, I made sure that, as we packed our bags ready for the next leg of our trip around northern New South Wales, to find a way to get underneath the rickety, single lane death trap for an opportunity with the camera. And as we greeted the morning joggers, it wasn’t long before we were back in the car to take a gander at the park that my grandmother visited a year and a half ago, when COVID-19 was still just a tickle in someone’s throat.
As it was not quite the season, the treas were mostly bare of the iconic purple flowers. My grandmother was quick to reminiscence about her time there, spent with a gaggle of other elderly ladies such as herself. Looking around, she was surprised to see a new playground that had recently popped up. True to form, both my mother and grandmother regressed to their childhood years as they swung on the swings and tried to make music out of colourful xylophones. Being the only adult there, I snapped a few shots and was eager to leave within minutes of arriving. After all, there was still a lengthy drive ahead of us and I wanted to get a good head start.

Our next stop on the tour of northern New South Wales was Armidale. The reason why? Because my mother was eager to take photos of the university campus. Along the way, we rested briefly at a lookout for the Guy Fawkes river. Terrified of the huge flying wasp-like insects, it took me a good long while to sit my tush down on the toilet seat. But I did! By the time I left the compost toilet, my mother had already scoped out the area and was heading down a nearby track to take a look at the scenery. She was followed by my grandmother, who admired the nearby waterfall that she felt was much more admirable than the one at Natural Bridge.
Once I had safely herded the two children back to the car, we were back on the road, winding through several road work projects, before we finally arrived at Armidale at noon. By now, we were hungry and so I, being a faithful navigator, searched up a few local restaurants. With a lot of choices vetoed, I decided to try Paper Tiger - a fusion of West and East. To my surprise, both my mother and grandmother were open to the choices and we had an excellent meal before we headed to the University of New England.
Driving around campus, my mother admitted that she had not taken a photo with the Hogwarts-esque building at the University of Sydney. As an alumni of the University of New South Wales, I was disheartened to hear her say how superior the architecture was at the rival university and tried to point out many of its flaws. Still, it did not deter her and there’s every possibility that one of these days, she’ll go visit the University of Sydney campus just to play Chinese tourist.
Most of the buildings around the University of New England was less than impressive. We did, however, stop by a Museum of Natural History. It had a tortoise display near the front and what appeared to be a dinosaur behind it. Unfortunately, it was closed. And so, we resumed our impromptu look around UNE. Satisfied that we had taken photos of the most prominent buildings, we started on the long journey to Tamworth: the home of Australian country music.

We arrived quite early. After checking in, summoning what little energy remained, we headed to the Golden Guitar. After snapping a shot of the sculpture outside the visitor information centre, my mother was adamant about seeing the Australian Standing Stones. To her dismay, she learned that they were NOT in Tamworth, but actually in Glen Innes.
In the end, she settled for the busts of many music greats at the Botanical Gardens of Tamworth, though she wasn’t very happy about it.
Our last day of travel was really a mad dash back to Sydney. Knowing that my friend had returned from Western Australia and was temporarily staying at Muswellbrook as they looked for more permanent lodgings due to the nature of her husband’s job, I also determined to drop by and say ‘hello.’ This we did. As we caught up, chatting about life and future career choices, we also looked out on the horde of bats that had set up home in the trees behind her hotel. It made me a little uneasy, wondering if there was a possibility of new diseases springing forth from the Australian country.
COVID-19, while contained and subdued in Australia, was still threatening the livelihoods of many people around the world. Still reeling from the disaster of the pandemic, it was very easy to see the spread of more deadlier viruses. All trapped in those blind flying mammals.
An hour passed in quiet chatter before we were on the road again, reinvigorated for the last part of our journey home. In many ways, it was a mad dash. Three hours it took (trapped due to traffic once we had finally arrived in Sydney because of school zones), for us to finally arrive at our front door. But it was all worth it in the end as we unpacked and unloaded and I finally got to go back on my computer.
The trip around northern New South Wales had its ups and downs. After all, it wouldn’t have been a family trip if we didn’t have a few arguments along the way. While I didn’t get to spy on the Hemsworth family or stalk Zac Efron, I did get to see a few interesting things on my trip, as well as sneak in a bit of gaming. And while I don’t think I’ll ever feel a hundred percent comfortable in the country towns of Australia - I know that I’m no stranger to this country. Small pockets of diversity exist, even in the most far-flung places. True, Sydney probably has them all beat in terms of quality and authenticity of multicultural food, but it’s also nice to see friendly faces everywhere.
