however,
can I quote most lines and scenes from the six of crows duology from memory?
I'll let you figure that one out, bestie.

best characterization lines from the crows—kaz brekker
“Kaz’s eyes found Inej unerringly in the crowd. Ketterdam had been buzzing about the assassination of the ambassador for weeks. It had nearly destroyed Kerch-Zemeni relations and sent the Merchant Council into an uproar. The Zemeni blamed the Kerch. The Kerch suspected the Shu. Kaz didn’t care who was responsible; the murder fascinated him because he couldn’t figure out how it had been accomplished...Kaz hated a puzzle he couldn’t solve, and he and Inej had concocted a hundred theories to account for the murder—none of which satisfied.”
okay that first line kills me BUT more importantly the word “fascinated” just makes kaz seem like the seventeen-year-old he really is. he’s all dark and twisted but a modern, typical-childhood kaz brekker would definitely love sherlock holmes books, serial killer documentaries, and chess.
“In nearly two years of battling side by side with Kaz, of late-night scheming, impossible heists, clandestine errants, and harried meals of fried potatoes and hutspot gobbled down as they rushed from one place to another, this was the first time she had touched him skin to skin, without the barrier of gloves or coat or shirtsleeve. She let her hand cup his cheek. His skin was cool and damp from the rain.”
why does noone talk about the fact that kanej was probably friends-to-lovers?? fuck the sequel leigh bardugo we want a prequel pls
“He wasn’t sure what he’d expected, but the force of the river was terrifying, flowing fast and hard as an avalanche. The noise was deafening even beneath the water, but with fear also came a kind of giddy vindication. He’d been right.”
i used this quote in my crows mbti post too but it’s such a small moment that characterizes kaz. bro’s literally drowning and his last thought before he almost dies is that he was right about the river, the competitive nerd.
“Waiting was the part of the criminal life so many people got wrong. They wanted to act instead of hold fast and gather information. They wanted to know instantly without having to learn. Sometimes the trick to getting the best of a situation was just to wait. If you didn’t like the weather, you didn’t rush into the storm—you waited until it changed. You found a way to keep from getting wet.
Brilliant, thought Kaz. So where the hell is she?”
kaz emphasizing patience in the criminal life and then immediately getting impatient because inej is away gives the same energy as inej’s question for matthias about nina in soc: “so why do your eyes keep searching the crowd for her?”
“‘Think on it, Wylan,’ Kaz said as he straightened the frame. ‘It’s shame that lines my pockets, shame that keeps the Barrel teeming with fools ready to put on a mask, shame that keeps the Barrel teeming with fools ready to put on a mask just so they can have what they want with no one the wiser for it. We can endure all kinds of pain. It’s shame that eats men whole.’”
kaz brekker, philosopher crook. jokes aside, this is what makes kaz a morally grey character leaning towards good. he takes advantage only of the people that aren’t innocent, and many times he lets them destroy themselves. he just kinda encourages it from a distance LMAO
“‘The bosses, the customers, the politicians,’ he mused. ‘That could be half the people in Ketterdam—and you want to fight them all.’
‘Why not?’ Inej asked. ‘On the seas and in the city. One by one.’
‘Brick by brick,’ he said. Then he gave a single shake of his head, as if shrugging off the notion.”
kaz supporting inej’s goal of payback but also not wanting inej to become like him, obsessed and sick with revenge. i cry.
kaz’s lines might have been my favorite so far?? i’m having such a good time going through the books again. thank you for the love!
kaz’s version | wylan’s version | jesper’s version | nina’s version | matthias’s version | inej’s version

I Skipped The Last Day of Kanej Week But Here’s The Good News-- I Have A New Obsession
Since it was my sister’s birthday today, she got to choose a movie to watch. And the movie she chose was Raya and the Last Dragon, and I have SO MANY THOUGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
So of course, you all have to suffer through them. Spoilers. But you knew that.
Now, what to rant about first? Ah, yes-- EVERYTHING.
I love the world building-- the different parts of Kumandra, the unique creatures that lived there, the rich cultures that inspired each tribe. Even the outfits showed the subtle differences. And while I’m mentioning it, the outfits were on point. Raya and Namaari looked awesome throughout the whole thing.
I love the characters-- Raya is so strong and sassy, but you can really see how losing her dad impacted her worldview. Her sacrifice near the end was a move you wouldn’t often see in fiction, but I LOVED IT. It was such a touching part.
Full credit to Kelly Marie Tran, who pulled off the character so well and uniquely that I kept forgetting that I knew her from Star Wars! I love recognizing actors, but it’s also really cool when I can seperate their current character from their other one. It adds some depth, and it’s probably hard to pull off, so WELL DONE to Kelly Marie Tran. Also, she kept making me cry. Minor detail.
Namaari was also a fascinating character. It was awesome, learning what drove her, and I was so, so, so happy to see her redeemed at the end. She and Raya were so similar, yet so different.
Sisu was an awesome character. Not only did she crack me up, she also had wisdom and hope. It was such a great combination. Additionally, she’s a super relatable character.
When I met Boun I was like, “who is this tiny punk? I love him!” And then I found out he lived on the boat alone, and I was all “okay, you’re my son now.” Yeah. I do that. He was also pretty funny. Excellent character.
Tong and Noi were also really cool-- I love how he was such a dad to her, and how she was a con baby who had a gang of monkey. Also, Tong’s way of talking just cracked me up.
Other characters I liked-- Tuk Tuk was great, and Namaari’s mom was super interesting. And Raya’s DAD!!! The HOPE he held for everyone. His epic SWORD (I loved that sword. It was so so so so cool). The minute he was supportive of Raya onscreen, my whole family was all “uh, do what you want he’s super dead.” I’m super glad he didn’t stay dead.
Hmmm, what else am I forgetting? I loved the dragons. They were so unique and different from your usual Western mythology style dragons. The rain-stepping ability was possibly the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
Speaking of rain, I’m not much of an animation person, but I felt like the water was done pretty well in this. And SPEAKING OF WELL DONE, I LOVED THE SCORE. JAMES NEWTON HOWARD IS A GENIUS THAT IS ALL.
Raya and Namaari’s character arcs were really good. You could clearly see that, even though Raya blamed Namaari out loud, she felt like she was at fault for what happened, both at the beginning and with Sisu. And Namaari may have started the story as the villain, but they brought about her humanization beautifully. You could really tell that she cared. She wasn’t just the angry killer they depicted her as at first.
Speaking of their character arcs-- the fight at the end. And the way Raya realized it was about trust. And sacrificed herself to show Namaari her trust. And the way the others trusted her and followed her lead. And how at first, Namaari fought to get out on her own, to save her own skin like her mother taught her to, but then realized that she couldn’t leave them. And then saved the world.
I’m not saying I was low key crying from when Sisu died until the end. But I kinda was.
Okay, two more things. One, I loved the hairdos in this movie. I’ve been wavering between two haircuts for a while, but that movie kinda pushed me in the direction of the second one, which is one that looks pretty similar to Namaari’s.
And two-- the found family. I would die for found family. It’s the best trope ever. And they did it so well in a short time with this movie.
Anyways, I’m gonna go cry about that for a little while. If you made it to the end of this post, have some good news-- I’m gonna post like, three Star Wars: Rebels fan fics tomorrow. Peace out, my dudes!
