#part of it for me is that this fandom tendency to go 'martin isn't manipulative he's a good person'

If it helps, I don't think it's the idea of Martin being manipulative in general that's evil. In canon it's pointed out a lot that he has that trait, but he also uses it to do things like letting people have a brief respite within fear domains. Probably him being an Avatar for the Web would have been that but on a bigger scale. So, betraying and manipulating a corrupted Jon for the sake of saving the lives of people in the apocalypse. Or something, idk.
sorta? idk i may just be unclear on the q&a, but jonny and alex talk abt how fandom wasn’t receiving martin’s pettiness & manipulation, and so making him web at the end would land wrong and make ppl think he’d been lying & evil the whole time (which i read as implying they... did not intend for him to be lying & evil the whole time, just at the very end, but thought fandom would think that based on his minor manipulations culminating in him being taken over by spiders)
which is still not a. happy implication, for me. it’s nice that jonny & alex maybe would not have intended it that way, but i’m saddened by the fact that a huge chunk of fandom WOULD have taken it that way (just look at all the ‘martin’s secretly evil’ stuff that went on during s5), and that jonny and alex didn’t see this as an issue they could rectify by making martin’s pettiness/manipulation come across more clearly in canon
