The car finally stopped with a sudden jerk, he really wasn't the best at parking. But he hoped it didn't startle Light. The boy had his head cradled by the locked seat belt, both eyes closed in a slumber L felt bad to intrude. He was tired, the night had exhausted him with laughter and excitement, despite spending it with the same person he sees everyday. L sighed, pulling out the key and taking off his seat belt, then carefully stepped out of the car.
He fumbles with the keys in his pocket on the way to the front porch, before unlocking the front gate of their house and coming back to the car, gently opening the door and being greeted by the sight of a crumpled suit and slightly parted pink lips.
L pecked the top of his head, as those lean fingers reached out to unlock Light's seat belt, taking it off and letting him lean on his body instead. He took a deep breath when his hands finally rested on the back of Light's thigh, before gently lifting him up. He was careful with his moves, hoping that he wouldn't wake Light up enough for him to be unable to fall asleep again.
A quiet grunt slipped through his lips when he successfully picked the boy up. He was heavier than L, after all. But he ignored the struggle and walked to the door, leading their way to the shared bedroom.
The hallway was where Light stirred, breath huffed in surprise at the unusual change of position and dark surroundings. L could feel his confusion and kissed his temple.
"L?"
"Yes, Light?"
"You...you don't need to carry me," Light slurred, words muffled by the soft cotton of L's shirt. "Could've just woke me up."
"It's alright," L assured as they reached their shared bedroom, which was lit by the streetlights outside from the opened curtain window.
"I feel like a baby," Light pouted as L set him down on the bed, carefully removing his grey suit from his shoulders. Light rested his head on L's shoulder, peppering lazy kisses on his jaw as he was unbuckling the leather garment on his waist.
"Well, you act like one sometimes," L said and received a gentle slap on his working hands which made him back away, letting Light take care of himself. While that, he hunched his way to the closet, removing his own jacket on the way, and grabbed a clean shirt.
Light laid down on the bed, after the shirt was tossed to him and he was ready. He usually would wash his face, maybe take a quick shower but not tonight, he was too tired. Even his cheeks hurt from smiling, but he couldn't help but smile again when L kissed his forehead.
"Alright, go back to sleep. I'll be back in a second." A kiss was planted on Light's nose, making his tired smile wider. L was about to walk away when Light reached for his face, pulling him into a lazy, tender kiss.
"Thank you, L," he whispered, a genuine happiness tinted on his tired voice as L smiled, before softly pressing his lips to the corner of Light's. There were just so many things he wanted to thank L for, but it can wait until tomorrow.
"Happy birthday, Light." His words tingled against Light's skin, and L was still resting his forehead on Light's cheeks when he noticed the boy had fallen back asleep. His breath got slower and his long lashes met his cheeks.
L sighed as he got up, getting himself ready to rest while his eyes still watching his sleeping lover. He was never the one who cared about birthdays, and to be honest neither did Light. A little celebration wouldn't hurt anybody, and L had to admit he loved the glint of joy in Light's eyes as he smiled just a second before he kissed him in gratitude.
After all, happiness is a handmade thing, and they crafted it so well with calloused hands that are softened by time.
