medication doesn't make all schizophrenia symptoms go away.

Just because we take an antipsychotic medication, it doesn’t mean all our symptoms disappear. Schizophrenia consists of positive and negative symptoms:

Positive symptoms are experiences or behaviours that the condition adds to your life, for example: auditory and visual hallucinations or delusions.

Negative symptoms are experiences or behaviours that the condition takes away from your life, for example: lack of motivation and emotion, flat affect (not showing emotions) and social withdrawal.

These symptoms can be very difficult to live with and very debilitating. The right medication can help us to recover some control, but the positive and negative symptoms don’t all just ‘go away’.

scream "I'm an ally" all you like, but the fact still remains that you are not; using mental health terminology in a colloquial context, is not allyship. watering down words that are for us, is not allyship. mocking people w visible symptoms, like talking to themselves in public settings, is not allyship. filming it and putting it on social media with captions like "(they're) so crazy!!!" is not allyship. creating hostile environments for us by refusing to acknowledge that we may need even the slightest bit of accessibility (such as trigger warnings), is not allyship.

even if you're mentally ill/neurodivergent yourself, there is such thing as internalised ableism, and simply because you experience one form of neurodivergency/mental illness does not mean you are suddenly exempt from behaving in a way that neurotypicals/people without mental illness do.

the level of performative activism amongst people who don't have psychotic and schizospec disorders, who don't have personality disorders, is plain and evident; it merely shows that when someone calls themselves an ally, the likelihood is that they mean they're only an ally to those of us who are "acceptable". not those of us who cannot mask, who cannot access things like therapy and medication (or simply don't want to, given the inherent hostility and abuse of the psychiatric system towards us), who cannot act "the right way".

in short: you're not an ally. you're an asshole. do better.
