In honor of the summer solstice I’m getting colorful! I‘ve been experimenting in the studio recently and revisiting my love for paper marbling, this time incorporating it into my screen prints. These are all test sheets but they already have me swooning. I wasn’t going to reveal my plans until later this summer, but I am too excited to keep these a secret! I have always loved psychedelic aesthetics, so it feels good to incorporate them into my artwork in a way that still aligns with the printshop’s vibe. Paper marbling is one of those processes that is immediately satisfying and I find so much joy in seeing how the marbling patterns visually interact with the printed images. I first learned how to marble paper when I studied in Florence, Italy back in 2009. It was such a special experience and, every time I marble a piece of paper, I am reminded of the fond memories of my time there. In this way, rediscovering paper marbling has been therapeutic and allowed me to build a beautiful bridge between my past and where I’m headed with my artwork in the future. The final creations won’t be done for quite a while but, in the meantime, I hope you enjoy these test prints as much as I do! Always learning something new at The Grolier Club. Currently there are two great exhibits going: “Pattern and Flow - A Golden Age of American Decorated Paper, 1960s-2000s” and “Animated Advertising - 200 Years of premiums, promos and pop-ups”. The first exhibit was not only gorgeous but really brought a whole genre of art and the intense skill needed to create it to life. The second exhibit was in my advertising background wheelhouse. Loved seeing the historical pieces but also, since I have collected many a Robert Sabuda pop-up book, the illustrated pieces. Recently animated one of the poems Stoneware dish, Longquan kilns by Sarah Howe. It explores issues of travel and identity in 16th and 17th century England and today. The film is commissioned by The Poetry Society in collaboration with Oxford University for TIDEfest 2021

The poem raises attention to material process of production and transformation- from the kilns in China to the cabinets  and mantelpieces in Europe. I used the technique of floating ink known as suminagashi or kaghaz-e abri to recreate the potter’s wheel.

I then animated the marbled paper which became the canvas on which objects were placed. Sometimes they represented maps, sometimes cracks in the porcelain. The journey of these pieces along the Silk Route mostly ended up as part of shipwreck at the bottom of the ocean. Many were transformed when metal handle and base were added to them thus changing their original function.

I’m thinking one day, three hour sessions on Saturday afternoons, 1-4, but am open for possible Wednesday evenings, 5:30-8:30, if that works better?
