Rating Bros. Attacks based on a scale of “gratuitous gimmick“ to “fun attack”
This is gonna be a long post, so it’ll be under a cut!
The scale is 1 being a boring gimmick and 10 being a fun attack.
Here is a link to a video of every attack for a visual aid! I’ll be time-stamping each attack as well.
Starting off with Superstar Saga, we have...
Splash Bros. (0:00) The first Bros. attack learned in the whole series, Mario jumps off of Luigi for a boost in height to propeller spin over the enemy, and Luigi grabs on to add extra oomph to the attack. Overall, this definitely feels like an attack with some fun buildup! 9/10
Super/Advance Splash Bros. (0:06) The advanced version of Splash Bros, instead of Luigi hopping on and grabbing Mario’s legs, he instead opts to give Mario a boost, allowing him to spin faster- and it hits spiked enemies! 9/10
Chopper Bros. (0:31) Mario uses his hammer to perform Luigi Dunk, and hops onto Luigi to get a spinning boost- and then spins with his hammer to hit rapidly! A very fun attack visually, but an attack for sure! 9/10
Super/Advance Chopper Bros. (0:37) A unique spin on the attack, where instead of Mario dealing damage, Luigi will repeatedly pop-up beneath the enemy, punching it upwards, and Mario pushes him back under! 10/10, Great use of a repetitive action to boost damage!
Swing Bros. (0:14) Mario grabs onto Luigi’s hands, spins rapidly to build speed, and flings Luigi foot-first at the enemy! A clever attack that plays off the strengths of each bro. 9/10
Super/Advance Swing Bros. (0:19) Similar buildup, but after the initial hit, Mario hops up to grab Luigi’s hands, and together, they form a giant spinning top to drill downwards- and steal items, if they’re lucky! 8/10
Fire Bros. (0:44) Mario uses his new Firebrand to charge up a massive fireball, which Luigi launches at the enemy with his hammer, hitting multiple each hit! In the remake, this was changed to be one massive fireball, which explodes into a storm of flames! The original is a 6/10, as it seems a bit tedious to bring out a hammer to throw one at a time- but the Remake’s use of a massive fireball which splits into many is for sure a 9/10!
Super/Advance Fire Bros. (1:00) A similar buildup, but Luigi passes the fire back to Mario, who punches it upwards to charge a big fireball which he then volleyball spikes onto the enemy. Seems a bit weird to add the extra step of Mario having to pass the fire to Luigi for it to be passed back, but still an attack none the less. 7/10.
Bounce Bros. (1:17) Incredibly similar buildup to Splash Bros., but this is the first Bros. Attack Luigi learns, and it makes sense it’s similar to Splash Bros. 7/10
Super/Advance Bounce Bros. (1:22) Instead of hopping off of Mario to the enemy, Luigi instead flips over and boosts off of his own arms, sending him and Mario flying individually to hit 2 enemies! Seems a bit strange to add in that handstand, but it does make sense considering it’s what kicks off the separation to attack 2 targets. 8/10
Knockback Bros. (1:28) Luigi uses his hammer to downsize Mario, and then his him at the enemy like a golfball of pain! FORE! 9/10
Super/Advance Knockback Bros. (1:33) Why hit an enemy once, when you can hit Mario back at them multiple times for more damage, as well as multiple targets? 10/10
Cyclone Bros. (1:47) Luigi downsizes Mario with his hammer, and hops up top, spinning rapidly with his hammer out- the resulting attack akin to a Beyblade of doom! 8/10
Super/Advance Cyclone Bros (1:47) The Advance move is a simple addition- when spinning momentum is lost, Mario will then use Luigi’s ankles to raise him up and swing him down, adding extra power to Luigi’s hammer swing. 9/10
Thunder Bros. (1:58) Luigi charges up his Thunderhand, and high-jumps off of Mario to rain down electricity from above, like a thunder strike! an excellent use of the High Jump ability in tandem with thunderhand. 10/10
Super/Advance Thunder Bros. (2:04) Instead of jumping above, Luigi opts to strike from below- Mario pushes him underground with his hammer once his Thunderhand is all charged, and Luigi jumps up from beneath the enemy, causing a massive thunderstrike! Honestly, the scariest bros. attack for sure, in my opinion. 10/10.
The Bros. Attacks in Superstar Saga are a fun, visual attack that plays well off the established strengths of the Mario. Bros, and is a fun take on using a field move in battle.
Next up we have my personal favorite of the series, Partners in Time! This game was interesting, as instead of Bros. Points, you could find/purchase battle items instead- while this meant you could stock up an insane amount of attacks, it also meant that if you ran out, you couldn’t replenish Bros. Attacks mid-battle.
Green shell (2:14) This is a simple shell, which is kicked at the enemy between Mario and Luigi in a rhythm- and once the babies join the party, one of the baby bros. will sit atop the shell, and can spin the shell faster for extra damage on contact! it’s hard to go wrong with a good ol’ koopa shell, and it’s no wonder the shell became a staple attack of the series after this game. 9/10.
Red Shell (2:30) Just like the green shell, however, this one can last as long as there are enemies on the screen- meaning after the initial target is defeated, the shell still goes! However, it can get incredibly fast, and it’s difficult to keep up with the inputs after some time. 10/10
Fire Flowers (2:52) You can’t go wrong with a fire flower either- upon use, Mario and Luigi will alternate having power, and you have to mash the button for each respective bro to rain a firey doom on your enemies, and can burn them. 9/10
Ice Flowers (3:05) The same mechanic as the fire flower, though this one can apply some debuffs if you’re lucky! Still, it does just feel like a second fire flower. 7/10
Smash Eggs (3:18) This attack feels a little silly, but the fact it can hit multiple targets and random as well as potentially grant a random item is useful! It’s like a kinder surprise of pain! 6/10
Cannonballers (3:38) This is a great attack which requires all 4 bros! All bros will hop into the cannon, and be fired out in a random pattern- you have to match the input to whoever lands in what order. A great attack, as it plays off of the classic jump attack, but a whole cannon seems a bit much for this. 6/10
Pocket Chomp (3:52) Walking the dog can always be a hassle. This attack works by having one Bro lead the chomp back and forth, and their baby counterpart will ride the back of the chain, where the older bro will jump on the enemy, and he baby will give em a good whack with the hammer! It certainly is a fun visual, but it feels a bit of a scam that the chain chomp itself doesn’t deal any damage. 7/10
Trampoline (4:48) It’s basically cannonballers, but it lasts much longer, which makes cannonballers kind of obsolete once you unlock this one. 7/10
Copy Flower (5:23) Similar in concept to the trampolines, where you time each input to match each bro- but much harder, as you don’t get a top screen to see who’s incoming to attack. Despite it feeling kind of pointless, it’s still a fun attack, and is usually the Bros. item people think about when they think of Partners in Time. 5/10
Mix Flower (5:58) This is the classic attack I personally think of when I think Partners in time. This attack is devastating, and plays off the mechanic of the fire flower- but instead of pelting your enemy in many small fireballs, you charge up a massive one which slowly descends, until it hits. This is, for sure, a terrifying attack to use, both visually and gameplay wise- as you have to charge it with all 4 bros, and not just 2- but it has an incredible damage payoff! 10/10
The Bros. Items are for sure limited in variety, but the later attacks can pack a massive punch. I’ll never forget defeating the Elder Shroob princess with only mix flowers, hiding under my bedsheet at 3 am on a school night, mashing buttons.
Next in the series is Bowser’s Inside Story! This is an interesting one, as not only do Mario and Luigi get bros. attacks, Bowser himself has Brawl attacks! While Mario and Luigi continue to use the face buttons, Bowser’s Brawl attacks use touchscreen controls instead, which is a clever way to set them aside, as well as make Bowser’s Brawl attacks more interesting!
Green Shell (6:20) Return of the green shell! My good friend, the green shell! Gameplay is nearly identical, but you no longer have a baby to add extra attack- but who needs it? 9/10
Fire Flower (6:34) Another classic, but this time, Mario and Luigi will visually power-up into their fire flower forms! Uses the same mechanic of alternative between Mario and Luigi and mashing buttons, but in the end, both bros get to mash together! 9/10
Jump Helmet (6:50) This is a weird one, where it’s a fun idea, and plays off the idea of jumping high to hit harder, it seems a tad pointless to have Luigi wear such a doofy helmet and have to keep up on foot- with the D pad- under Mario. 5/10
Yoo-hoo Cannon (7:09) This is a very fun attack to use. Mario and Luigi will split into multiple copies, hiding in a cannon- and you have to get the right input based on who is in which cannon. But don’t worry! You don’t have to guess, the Yoo-hoo comes in when Mario and Luigi wave at you from their cannons before they start to ignite! Yoo-hoo! 8/10
Super Bouncer (7:30) This one is a weird one. Yes, Yoga balls can be incredibly lethal weapons in the right hands, I know this from experience- and it is fun to see Luigi clutching onto the top of the ball for dear life as you rotate it to keep him safe- as well as, in the remake, a fun visual to tell you that the final attack input WILL be Luigi. But the yoga ball seems a little goofy to look at. 7/10
Spin Pipe (8:02) The use of the pipe as well as the guesswork between keeping track of rotation to know who gets the input- Mario or Luigi- makes this a difficult Bros. Attack. Not to mention- what’s the pipe for? Couldn’t Mario and Luigi perform this maneuver fine without it? I guess they’re plumbers? 5/10
Mighty Meteor (8:35) This is a fun callback to the smash egg- but instead of kicking it, the bros use their hammers, and have to distance themselves correctly to the meteor. It certainly is a devastating blow to be hit with a meteor. 8/10
Snack Basket (9:03) The classic Snack Basket. the Snasket. This is actually, funny enough, a required attack in order to progress, as the shockwave generated from it is the only thing that can break Chakron out of his stiff yoga pose. The attack is certainly a very nintendo attack- Luigi eats a bunch of delicious pastries, grows to a gigantic size, and Mario has to hoist him up for the now fat Luigi to fall downwards and create a massive shockwave. It’s a fun attack that plays well to Mario’s strength, and Luigi’s endless appetite. Unfortunately, north america is really weird about this attack. You know what you’ve done. 7/10
Magic Window (9:30) This is a secret Bros. attack you obtain for defeating the frozen shroobs in Bowser’s castle! It feels like a fun nod to the copy flower, in a way, as you have to time inputs based on who jumps out of the window- but sometimes, both bros jump out, and you have to hit both buttons! 7/10
Falling Star (10:06) This is the final Bros. Attack in Bowser’s inside story. The bros throw up a big star, and starlow becomes a guide to throw many smaller stars at the big one- the colour of the big star determines which brother should throw stars at it- and if you don’t throw with the right bro, the star says “NO!” and won’t accept it. This is a devastating blow when you load it up enough, as the stars all rain down in a massive attack afterwards. 9/10
Remember when I said that was the last Bros. Attack? Well guess what, Bowser’s got Brawl attacks! Let’s rate those, too!
Goomba Storm (10:33) Bowser’s got minions, and what’s a minion’s job? serve their king, no matter what! IN this attack, goombas will charge the enemy- but Bowser can make it better! If you tap a goomba, Bowser will ginite it, sending it flying- and after all goombas have charged, the flaming goombas will plummet down ontop of the target! Hope those goombas get good pay! 9/10
Shy Guy Squad (10:56) The Shy Guy Squad uses a great big band to roll Bowser into a ball, and slingshot him at the enemy at full speed! This is certainly an attack, but it always seemed interesting to me how Bowser could ball up in battle before actually getting the field move. 9/10
Koopa Corps (11:13) Koopa Corps is certainly a fun attack- the Koopas will hide in their shell and spin into the enemy, and Bowser has to shell up too, in order to knock the koopas back to prevent them from spinning away. 8/10
Bob-omb Blitz (11:37) Jury’s still out on whether Bob-ombs are intelligent people, autonomous weapons, or some kind of explosive animal. Whatever they are, Bowser puts em to use- you guide them into a shape where the most Bob-ombs will strike the enemy! In the remake, Bowser has a little whistle to direct his bomb buddies. 9/10
Magikoopa Mob (11:50) Magikoopas have some powerful magic. But you know who else does? Bowser! The Magikoopas will stand in a pattern, and you have to trace over the shape- the Magikoopas you manage to strike will get their spell powered by by Bowser’s own magic. IN the remake, this was changed to his firey breath, which felt like a bit of a downgrade to me. Bowser’s got dark magic, and It’s a shame it’s being less and less of a thing. 7/10
Broggy Bonker (12:06) This is a silly attack, for sure. You give a smelly dog a bath. You unlock Broggy and his friends by finding every single Blitty for Broque Monsieur, and on a perfect attack, the blitties will attack alongside Broggy! Why the clean dog attacks your enemy is a mystery to me, but while it doesn’t feel like an attack, it’s certainly a very fun one! 5/10
That’s it for Bowser’s inside story! It was certainly a memorable game, and while the remake was certainly a bit of hit or miss, it was definitely a fun game to have experienced by younger gamers with a fresh coat of paint. Why you can no longer punch the boo-ray machine is a mystery.
On to Dream Team- This game has a similar gimmick to Bowser’s Brawl attacks- only instead of Bowser, it’s Luigi! Why does Luigi get special attacks? You see, Luigi is the most powerful character, and- Wait, it’s actually because you’re in Luigi’s dreams, and he’s allowing Mario to use copious clones of Luigi as a weapon. They’re kind of a beefier version of Bros. attacks.
3D red/green Shell (12:32) Return of our good friend, the shell! Instead of attacking in the regular battle positions, Mario and Luigi will attack from the foreground. It’s the same basic idea as the shells before it- Mario uses a red shell, Luigi uses a green. However, there is a fun addition- for the final strike, Mario or Luigi will send the shell on a curve-kick to their brother, who will add an extra nasty kick, dealing greater damage on the final hit! 8/10
Bye-Bye Cannon (12:55) Hey wait, didn’t we already have a cannon? That we did- but Bye bye cannon is different! maybe. Not really. it’s kind of a combination of Cannonballers and Yoo-hoo canon, employing the use of times inputs to match the bros as well as multiple bros- but the visual effect of the bros flying off into the far distance and landing from the foreground is certainly fun! Not to mention, After the initial hit, the bros will rain down in a column, and you get to attack again! 7/10
Bomb Derby (13:24) Where did Mario get all these bombs? Why does Luigi have to hold them? What’s going on?? You have to quickly use the circle pad to have Luigi toss bombs to Mario, who hits them at the enemy with his hammer. Despite the colourful appearance of the bombs, this is undoubtedly an attack. 10/10
Jet Board Bash (13:41) This is definitely a silly looking attack, but the presence of a hammer as well as a build-up makes this an attack for sure. An unorthodox attack, but an attack. Luigi lays on his tummy on the jet board, using his arms to build up speed, and Mario gives the target a big whack with his hammer. 9/10
Zee Egg (13:58) It seems a bit off to me that MARIO gets the Zee egg, when it was Luigi who spanked the Zeekeeper, but whatever. Mario is a special boy. It does feel kind of strange for Zeekeeper to make a ball of energy and have the bros repeatedly strike it with the hammer. What’s the point of the hammers- adding momentum? it doesn’t speed up at all. But it’s certainly a fun visual to see the Mario Bros. riding the back of a powerful, ancient deity. 4/10
Fire Flower (14:58) The triumphant return of our good friend, the fire flower! However, instead of mashing the buttons, you have to time each button based on when the fireball reaches it’s peak size. Of course, nobody is truly freed from the shackles of button mashing, as at the last moment of the attack, both bros get to mash the button to assail their foe with flames. 7/10
DropChopper (15:19) This is one of those ‘what’s this supposed to be’ attacks. I suppose greater heights make for better jumps, but why a helicopter hat? A trampoline would do just fine, or a cannon! Both bros will have to hop up onto the copter, and then the system has to be tilted in order to aim the reticle on your foe. Have I mentioned I loathe mandatory motion controls? 3/10
SlingSniper (15:43) This is a fun attack where Luigi loads onto a slingshot and Mario pulls him back- then you aim and fire! While it’s a silly attack, this is for sure an attack. 8/10
Star Rocket (15:57) This feels like a similar attack to the Falling Star from BiS, but instead of throwing little stars onto a big star, you tilt the 3DS to try and catch as many as you can as you approach the target. Once you get there, both mario and Luigi will jump down and land on the target- but only with the collected mini stars! What happened to the big one? 6/10
It’s time, now, for what is most definitely a gimmick- but a very fun one! I personally enjoyed the idea of the Luiginoids turned into the attacks themselves. It’s like somebody asked Luigi to come up with a big attack, and he said “big hammer, but it’s made of a bunch of tiny me’s!” I have no idea what’s wrong with Luigi, and I personally would love to study him.
Luiginary Ball (16:30) This is the first Luiginary Attack you learn. It’s quite simple- a big ball you roll into enemies- but you have to build it up by rolling the Luigi ball over dozens of Luiginoids, adding them to the ball’s size- and then you aim and push! 7/10
Luiginary Stack (16:58) This is an attack that builds off the old idea of “big jump = big damage” but instead of using something like a trampoline or a cannon, our good friends the Luiginoids will build up a huge stack to jump on the enemies with Mario- And after the initial jump, all the luiginoids will rain down! The better you stack, the more damage is done, and the more Luiginoids will fall! 7/10
Luiginary Hammer (17:29) You know what else is a classic Mario bros. attack? A hammer! You know what would be better than a hammer? a BIG hammer! The Luiginoids will pile up onto Mario’s actual hammer, and you have to keep it balanced to avoid all the Luiginoids falling off. Of course, it’s very funny to see, but it certainly comes across as a strong attack with such a big hammer! 9/10
Luiginary Flame (17:54) Luiginary Flame is a fun attack that feels very similar to the Adv/Super Fire Bros attack from Superstar Saga. The Luiginoids will pass along a fireball with Mario occasionally jumping in to keep it along, and the further it goes, the stronger it gets! it feels like a logical conclusion to a thought process on how to make a fire attack better, which really adds to the idea that Luigi comes up with the Luiginary attacks. 8/10
Luiginary Wall (18:19) Luiginary Wall is a misleading name- as the wall isn’t what initially causes the damage, but rather, the main Luiginoid who spins with his hammer! You have to hit him back into the wall of Luiginoids to hit enemies, but hitting the wall also sends some Luiginoids flying away- and once you reach the outer wall, all the Luiginoids will pile up into a big barrier and topple over! I suppose this could be the wall it’s named for, but it appears more as a large wave than a wall. 7/10
Luiginary Typhoon (18:47) This is a really silly attack to see, but it’s also very charming- Luiginoids will turn into a gigantic spinning top, which Mario will let rip beyblade style- turning it into a big tornado! The Luiginoid Tornado will spin around, and you can even suck up Mario! This is a neat attack to me personally, as it plays off of Luigi’s thunder/lightning/storm theming he sometimes has. 9/10
Overall, Dream Team has some very fun attacks- the use of foreground vs background is very visually pleasing, and the fun poses that Dreamy Luigi pulls are very goofy to see!
Now for the final original installation of the Mario and Luigi series, Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam!
We don’t talk about Paper jam. though... I guess, we do, because I’m about to. At least the attacks.
3D red/green Shell (22:28) hey wait! We already covered this! That’s right- Paper Jam actually recycles plenty of prior Bros. attacks! Whether this is Lazy or a clever use of assets is up to the player, but for the sake of keeping this already long post not TOO long, we’ll only cover the unique attacks.
Rocket Blast (22:46) This is an attack where Mario and Luigi hop on a rocket, jump down on an enemy, and then poor Luigi is stuck piloting a busted rocket and crashing it into the enemy. I don’t see why the bros need to jump, why can’t they just fire a rocket? 4/10
Cannonball Chuck (23:23) This is another attack which uses Luigi as... ballast? Let’s go with that. Luigi clings onto a massive flail as Mario swings it around and throws it, and then Luigi must aim the cannonball to collide with enemies.
Toad Trail (23:41) Hey, remember the bullshit with the paper toads? Now you can watch a whole cutscene where all you do is ride across toads and roll into the enemy! 1/10
Drill Shell (24:28) This attack is kind of just a fancier version of a jump, and feels like a lame version of Adv/Super Splash bros. 2/10.
Balloon Blast (25:08) This feels like is a Mario party minigame were an attack. You set up a balloon and use Mario and Luigi in a rhythm to inflate the balloon, and the bigger the balloon, the more damage- and many smaller balloons will rain down like bombs! 5/10
Mega Thwonk (25:38) This is a fun attack that’s a callback to the Giant Luigi battles! Luigi eats a mega shroom and grows to giant size, and charged at the enemy with his hammer- and after the strike, Mario will continue to jump on the, doing more damage! 8/10
That was all the bros. attacks! Every last one of them! There are no more!
....Fine. I will do the Trio attacks. Trio attacks use Mario, Luigi AND Paper Mario, and for some reason, occur within some weird paper realm. They’re honestly just pointless interactive cutscenes, so be prepared for low ratings.
Trio Racquet (26:11) Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario hit a ball at a paperfied version of the target. At least it isn’t too long. 4/10
Trio Kite (26:44) You know what’s a great weapon? a fucking kite, I guess. You mash buttons to run fast. I guess Paper Mario also runs up the line to hit, but it’s pretty pointless. 3/10
Trio Whirligig (27:27) This is by far the longest and most annoying Trio attack. You have to tilt the system to hit narrow falling targets to deal damage, as well as fall through rings, and everything moves. It kinda feels like the principle of Big jump = big damage, but it’s so pointlessly long. 1/10
Trio Shuriken (28:33) This is an ok attack, where you throw paper mario shurikens at the enemy, but in the end, it still feels like of annoying for such a long attack. 2/10
Trio Meteor (29:20) another incredibly long one, you have to slowly aim a falling meteor on the targets- but you have to be careful, because the incoming meteor will blow the target away slightly. 3/10
Overall, Paper Jam is definitely the weakest of all the games, really leaning into the gimmicky feeling.

Trying out another style. You don't know how much I love these two.
I did say something about Luigi being rude sometimes against their enemies, I kinda want to make Mario the complete opposite or make him worse as possible. I wonder what fits Mario's character more tbh

Ok so I just found out that in the game mario and luigi paper Jam, that paper luigi was going to be a playable character, and that got me thinking, what if the game would happen after the events of super paper mario and paper luigi will still be recovering from those events and he would reluctantly join the adventure, I mean getting send into another world after you were forced to almost destroy the multiverse doesn't help in the slightest right?
Oh that would've been interesting!
Paper Luigi would pretend to be fine, but Paper Mario would be worried about him throughout the whole thing. Regular Mario and Luigi step in to help with Paper Luigi's trauma. They can't take away the pain or the bad memories, but they remind the Paper Bros that they just need to work through it together. It will be progress, no matter how long <3

In Mario and Luigi: Musical Mayhem. They are guided by Ze and Tempo to find the five powerful music stars. They are the source of the Music Kingdom's magic. They are not where music comes from, the notelings invented that themselves. They made the music stars to help music go above and beyond simply sounding pretty. With them music can calm the fiercest of rage, fill a valley with flowers, stop a rainy day and bring the sun out to shine, and so much more. If one gains possession of anyone of them, they're musical prowess on that type of music intensifies. Each color star represents a section of the Music Kingdom and the type of instrument it features. The Windy Whistles, Percussion Plateau, String Strum Forest, Synth Storm Shores, and Chorus Castle.
The Blue Music Star of Winds
The Green Music Star of Strings
The Red Music Star of Percussion
The Purple Music Star of Synth
and the Orange Music Star of Vocals
In order to defeat Rhythmax. The bros will need all five if they hope to stand against his diverse musical knowhow. But bringing music out to its fullest potential requires more than the stars, or even knowing how to play their instruments. It requires heart. If you don't truly feel the music when you play, it'll never fully blossom.
I’ve noticed in the new Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Those music note blocks, which in my imagination would be creations of the music Kingdom. Even have chorus-sponding colors to the music stars! Minus the purple synth star at least. I mean maybe Nintendo would be down with my idea. Something’s have already turn out so similar. Maybe not as a Mario and Luigi game, but I’d prefer that combat system.

Concept of Paper Mario and the M&L games merging was SO fucking good I am so sad original characters were not allowed and the M&L series had to end on its lowest point and also Mario's characterization was really bad???? <---[Paper Jam Fan]
