Important Features of Panel Touch Technology
The panel touch technology provides devices with multi-touch ability. It is especially useful if operational environment of such devices requires constant concentration from an operator. Capacitive touch panels will activate with either a bare finger or a capacitive stylus and have excellent dragging performance. An operator may continue doing her/his other duties while working on the screen.
This technology was also tested in Arctic environment where working conditions for the devices required their ability to function in minus 40 Celsius temperatures. A first party of the devices was installed in the Norwegian Arctic library on Svalbard island.
Svalbard is located in the Arctic Ocean and is under the sovereignty of Norway. The climate is dry; the average annual temperatures range from -25 to +10 degrees. However, on certain winter days the temperature may fall to as low as minus 45! From mid-April the sun does not set on the island all day long and from early November to mid-February there is a polar night.
The library is located on the 79 parallel of north latitude and has a well-developed infrastructure. Librarians live in ultra-modern homes equipped with solar-powered heating system in a CCTV watched complex. The complex, among other things, has a hospital, a sports facility with a swimming pool, a public cafeteria, a coffee shop and a cinema. Librarians are paid a handsome annual salary of 180,000 Norwegian krones with additional benefits such as monthly free airplane tickets to the home, paid annual vacation at 4-star hotel anywhere in the world, interest free mortgage in the amount of 2,000,000 krones to purchase a house on the mainland and a chance to win a position in arctic library in Antarctica, where all above benefits double!
In total three librarians work in shifts in this library. One is usually on standby at home, another one is on vacation and only the third one actually work from 10 am till 3 pm. The working hours are reduced due to the harsh working conditions. Besides, it is not uncommon that polar bears walk in the complex sometimes at nights so people prefer to be indoors from 6 pm. There was even a shooting accident a couple of years back when a guard had to immobilize the bear with a tranquilizer when it attempted to break into the warehouse.
So for this experiment, a librarian was given a task to walk with the device with the panel touch along the coast of the island for almost 2 hours. The length of the journey was close to 10 km with the average outside temperature of minus 30 (early December) and minus 41 (mid January). They were required to type frequently, send emails and even start a Skype video conferences! In both instances devices reported no problem even after extensive usage!
Consequently, the device was duly “Arctic” certified and can be freely exported now to Canada, Alaska and other places with cold winter weather.
