My Janitor/Roger headcanon
my overall theory with little nightmares, is that the Signal Tower warped everyone in SOME way, and before then, people/things were normal
i can't decide whether he'd have an office job, or work as a janitor at Pale City Elementary (name i came up with for the school)
Tumblr media
growing up, Roger loved to whittle. whether it be tools or figures, he enjoyed crafting under the tree near the Signal Tower that was being built. his house was one of the last few in the city that wasn't torn down due to more expansion of the city. eventually that changed, and his childhood home was sold and taken down. the passion that had fueled his creativity with whittling had faded into a mere memory. The Signal Tower, where he had spent countless hours near honing his craft, now stood tall and proud, a symbol of change
with age, Roger's eyesight began to deteriorate rapidly. Stargardt disease, a condition affecting the retina, cast a shadow over his world, blurring the once vibrant colors and shapes he had grown accustomed to seeing. simple tasks became increasingly challenging, and the frustration and helplessness he experienced only deepened his self-loathing
days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, as Roger isolated himself from the outside world, outside of going to work. his once-beloved whittling tools lay abandoned, collecting dust in a forgotten corner of his small apartment. the sound of laughter and children playing outside his window felt like a cruel reminder of the life he had lost
Tumblr media
one day, as he and other folks dragged themselves to work, the light of Signal Tower began to burn a bright red. not the normal kind of light it gave off, no, this was different. people could hear it, the loud, blinding light gave off a long drawn humming sound. the deep sound drove people mad as the light grew brighter. and brighter. and brighter.
Tumblr media
and that's all I got for this short theory/headcanon!! pleeaassee let me know if you'd like to hear more!
i have developing ideas for the other monsters of the Maw! and I'd love to share more if anyone is interested!

Alastor’s little Nightmares:
So I was scrolling through YouTube when I came across a small but very interesting video:
youtube
It’s an edit video of Alastor and the song used is “Nightmares Never End” by JT music, which is a fan song for Little Nightmares 2.
So this got me to thinking and my brain plotting: what if Alastor was a child of Nowhere that never crossed the threshold fully? I’m here to explain why this could be an interesting topic to explore and how it could fit with Alastor in a crossover fanfiction or alternate universe.
(Spoilers ahead for Little Nightmares 1, 2 and The Sounds of Nightmares. I will also be using some fan theories to help support this.)
The Nowhere is described by Noone in the Sounds of Nightmares to be a place that “is…and isn’t”, a place existing in its own realm that manifests from the nightmares of young children. But not just any child will be targeted by the Nowhere. These kids are often mistreated and taken advantage of by adults in the waking world in some way, shape or form. Thus the Nowhere will slowly and surely lure these fearful and traumatized kids into a nightmarish cycle fed by the fear and trauma they experienced within the realm itself.
In an analysis video about Nowhere, it is theorized that the children are lacking in one or more categories of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. I recommend you go and watch it (link down below), but long story short, one or more of these needs are not being met and these kids escape to this realm which seems to meet those needs, only for them to be twisted overtime.

In regards to Alastor, if we use the time period he grew up in (southern America in the early 1900s), who he was born to (a white father and Creolan mother) and the headcanon of an abusive father, we can paint a clear picture as to how Alastor may have been a target of Nowhere at some during his childhood years.
He would have appeared in many places in Nowhere, from the Pale City to perhaps even the Maw, being spirited away. Despite how terrifying the world was, there was something about it that kept luring him in as it had with many children before and after.
But when it came time to cross the Threshold, he refused. For one simple reason. His mother. His rock and emotional anchor in his rather tumultuous and lonely childhood. He couldn’t leave her behind, and resisted the Ferryman, closing that door behind him.
As an adult and even in his time in Hell, he cannot fully recall his experiences in Nowhere, only that he had extremely vivid nightmares as a young boy. But there is always a nagging in the back of his mind and odd visions of ever seeing eyes that bring forth memories he cannot immediately recall.
Some of my headcanons regarding who Alastor was in the Nowhere:
Tumblr media
1) He went by Lie while in Nowhere.
2) His urge for flesh later in life came from his experiences in the Maw.
3) Lie was one of the “winners” in Nowhere (similar to Mono, Six and Low), manifesting in the ability to shadow walk. This ability would resurface after he died and went to Hell.

One of the concepts about the Tower that I like to mull about is that the thing could have psychic abilities - in that it's mental prowess is felt by lesser creatures, hence the Signal and the broadcast. But psychic does not equate intelligence, it's still just an animal feeding off the citizens of the city, functioning under basic instincts - feed, grow, reproduce.
Which was an aspect of the Tower and the Flesh's existence that I referred to as it being so horrifying - it's not something that can be reasoned with, it has no higher thoughts. In my theories, it's better described as a siphonophores - which fits its in game detail as it amasses more of itself by 'consuming' Viewers (humans). It has no agenda or goals or ability to plan what it does, it just feeds and grows.
Like a carnivorous plant releasing pheromones to entice insects, the Flesh manages a radiation or psychosis, which is invisible but the affects are felt. Imagine if the sun was a beast with psychic abilities, and its thoughts alone could burn us despite the Earth being a couple billion light years away. Thankfully, the Flesh beast is much 'smaller' than the sun, otherwise the Viewers might have been vaporized upon its initial presence.
Oh wait....
Tumblr media
Ignore that.
To be clear, I adore all interpretations of the Flesh and the Tower in Pale City. But I too like to envision this thing as being nothing conscious - no more than a fungus or anemone.
But I do speculate how the Flesh functions, and why it needed the Broadcaster. Since we do know by the games end that Mono has these reality and world warping abilities, which makes him invaluable to the Flesh. We can call him a conduit, but what does that mean to the Flesh? What does it benefit from having this isopod live inside it?
The Broadcaster provides the most essential function of focus. Because Mono is a "single-minded" child, and as a survivor he is capable of resolve and perseverance - even capable of surviving in the core of the Flesh. Hence he manages the radius and intensity of the Signal, thus the Flesh does not vaporize or maim its food source. So they share a symbiotic relationship, very much like real isopods and siphonophores - except Mono provides a pseudo consciousness for the Flesh, not genuine thought or awareness, but his presence does make the Signal more potent and specialized.
What is as well horrifying, is that the Viewers or citizens to the city were aware something was... amiss. However, the pheromones of the Flesh and its lure was much too enticing to dwell too much about. This may be why children have survived, or are not easily duped by the Tower - children coming into the Little Nightmares world are more leery of these sort of dangers and can sense the presence of the Tower - through the radiation or psychosis it drenches the land with. But these feral children have no way of escaping the Signal (save for the Maw), since they cannot possibly conceive where the danger is coming from or what manifests it.

I would really love to see a neat explanation for how the warped people in the Pale City see, breath, eat, etc. when they're faces look like that.
(and if you say "it's fantasy, it doesn't have to make sense" I'm filling your house with violent porcelain children)
Maybe the screeched skin doesn't cover them completely, and they still have unseen airways. hearing is easy, sense snakes have internal ears so they might be the same.
but I really want to know how they see, or if they even do.

Life Cycle of Tree Spirits
They begin, as all plants do, as simple seeds. Except these Seeds were born from the Sanctuary in the Valley of the Seasons.
As such, they are born with an awareness stronger than any other plant life, allowing them to speak telepathically with others.
They are trained by the Guardians of the Seasons until they are ready to go through the Ritual of the Seasons.
The Ritual is more of a coming of age/graduation ceremony, after which the Seed finds a host for themselves.
After that, they will gain the spiritual power with which to create their own Forest and spread Light.
Such former Seeds include Seir, Sein, Seia and Seik.
Sein is the Light and Eyes of the Spirit Tree of Nibel, Ori’s homeland
Tumblr media
Seir is the Light of the Spirit Willow of Niwen, whom Ori succeeded after the Willow succumbed to the Decay.
Tumblr media
Seia is the Light of the Spirit Blossom of Lemuria. It’s my headcanon in this AU that the Explorers were in Lemuria while it was in a state of Decay, like Niwen was. Aurora’s ancestor bonded herself with Seia and inherited her powers of light, which were passed down the generations through the firstborn children.
As long as they ruled, or at least lived in the country, Lemuria would have its Light.
Tumblr media
Seik is the Light of the Spirit Tree of Rime, located in the Denial section. This is the Seed that bonded with the Fox in Seasons After Fall.
After successfully completing the Ritual, the Seed went on to find a proper host, while the Fox became a new Guardian.
Tumblr media
Once bonded with a tree host long enough, the Spirit Seed will start to produce new Light Spirits.
Being bonded extends the Tree host’s lifespan well beyond is expected capacity, but when the Tree host eventually starts to wither and decay or the Light Seed is stolen away, the Forest/land they protect will go through a period of Decay.
The Decay can be rectified either by returning the Seed or a Light Spirit sacrificing itself to give the Tree new life.
In the worst case scenario, where the tree host is too old and sick to be functional even with the Light Seed, a Light Spirit can bond with the Seed instead, becoming a new Spirit Tree.
If the Seed cannot find a new host, it will die as well.
This is what happened to the Spirit Tree that used to reside on the Mainland in the Pale City.
The City was built on top of a fully decayed Spirit Forest, and the Signal Tower was constructed over where the Tree once stood.
Like the Seeds, the Signal needs a host to broadcast its will through.
When the tree host dies, its spirit becomes one of the tree people as seen in Ithersta.
Tumblr media
When the Seed dies, it’s Light returns to Primeve and it’s consciousness is reborn as either a Valoka or a human, depending on certain circumstances.
In this AU, the Light of the Mainland, Seim, was reborn as Mono. His Tuning powers may have originated from exposure to the Signal, but they could also have manifested from his past life as a Light Seed.
His current life is messed up from being stuck in a time loop for who knows how long, until Six was reborn as Selene and broke the cycle.

I wonder if the “the Hospital” chapter is referred to as a hospital, only because the children have never been involved with a morgue prior. Your mention of the death masks is very intriguing, because we refer to those as “being masks” and some of the characters in the LN 1, do wear flesh or prosthetic masks due to deformities brought on by this world, from a not fully defined force – maybe the Signal transmission. The Chefs wear semi flesh faces, but the Lady wears a ‘decorative’ porcelain mask. There is a Roger mask in the morgue, but does that imply Roger at some point perished and wound up in the Doctor’s lair? The mask we see for Roger in the Hospital does not have its eyes covered, as well.
Tumblr media
The entire section of the ‘Hospital’ implies that there may have been a plague or mass die out, just as we see the clothing draped across the city of Viewers that have been taken by the Transmission. And there are implications in the original concept art, that the Hospital/Morgue was overrun by people who were ill – as seen by a child sitting in a chair beside a gurney
Tumblr media
And there are corkboards covered in notes and long lists hanging down to the floor. There must be a legit Hospital we never see in the Pale City, but the it would have been overrun early on due to whatever outbreak was unleashed on the city. Thus, the other place that may have held bodies or may have received overflow of certain populace who had no chance of recovery, was likely the Morgue. This explains why the cells are overflowing with bodies – everything got out of control, and the world fell apart.
Somewhere in the chaos unfolding, the mortician looking after the bodies became a “Doctor” to rebuild all these people, “perfecting the ones who ask for help, with his way” – Little Nightmares 2
And if we go off on what the creators of LN said was the theme behind the adults, becoming twisted caricatures of what they once were, we can see what this Doctor has become. A person who is a little too enthusiastic about perfection, and taking flesh but turning it into plastic. For some of the Patients, it is apparent he has run out of supplies.
