Trying to put together a travel palette for my next trip away and I'm really struggling to narrow down to 12 colours that gives me the vibrancy that I love but with the versatility that I need!!
What's your top 12?

Selected Paintings of Jeffery Chong Wang
(Chinese-Canadian, b. 1979)
Artist Statement
My artwork is a reflection of my emotions and memories, and shows my understanding and interpretation of my life experience and the world that surrounds me. I have lived in Canada since 1999, but my time spent growing up in my native China has been an important influence on my artwork. I have painted portraits of my family members at different ages as well as different locations in China that I remember from my past.
All the figures that I create on canvas are myself in a way; they reflect my cultural upbringing, personal feelings, and experiences. I think of them as characters in a drama, and the canvas as a stage. My work is a response to the imbalance between my inside feelings and the outside world. I fuse classical concepts and traditional techniques into my work using my own exaggerated figures. These figures reflect the history of western oil painting techniques but also show contemporary themes of eastern culture. Courtesy of : dorothycircusgallery.com

Details from a work in progress painting by Kalin Thomas, photographed in his studio September 2023
This style of using a different hue for contrast is called Verdaccio and has an interesting history: https://feltmagnet.com/painting/what-is-verdaccio-and-how-to-use-it-in-your-paintings

Nauset Lighthouse in Eastham, Massachusetts on the Outer Arm of Cape Cod. This is a quick gouache study on canvas. My photo was from midday with a cloudless sky and it didn’t make for much contrast, it’s actually harder to work with that because it tends to come out a bit cartoonish. Good practice though.
I use Holbein Acrylagouache because they are opaque, dry fast, and a saturated with color. There’s not much chance for blending so I use white gesso to reprime the canvas and mix my blues in to make an ombré sky.

Valentine’s Day!
I did a couple art pieces for Valentine’s this year and I am pretty pleased with how they turned out.
First I did a couple painting for my sister and I. We grew up watching Pokemon and enjoyed the theatrical antics of Team Rocket. I went for a silhouette look and I absolutely love the finished pieces! I have used this technique before with Sailor Venus, though I did need to do some touch ups for these, overall it worked out fine. I may use card stock next time or go a little lighter on the background color in order to keep the paper from getting wet and sticking to the previous layers.
youtube
I am also determined to finish my Wreck This Journal by years end and decided to do some prompts that I had ideas for that were love themed. I was gifted the journal by my aunt for my birthday back in 2018 and honestly most of the finished pages were done around that time. I think the reason I had so much trouble with it is that I had too many ideas for the prompts and so many people had such cool journals that I wanted mine to look good too. I have come to terms with the fact that I am just a hobbyist and my art may not be perfect, but better it exist at all than simply be a perfect idea in my head. The idea is the WRECK the journal anyways, so the art will come out how it comes out and I have accepted that truth.
Tumblr media
I started with the Trace your hand prompt with Love & Peace in homage to Vash the Stampede from Trigun. My trusty old Crayola marker betrayed me a bit, but I still overall like the piece
For the prompt Find a way to attach these pages  I relied on the red string of fate tying my OTP Ran (Rachel) and Shinichi (Jimmy) from Detective Conan (Case Closed) together. I used references from the first movie The Time Bombed Skyscraper including the red and blue wires from the final bomb.
And finally for the Draw with glue prompt I did a faux stained glass rose referencing Beauty and the Beast. It came out a little messy but after it dried I really liked the feeling of the page!

Art Tip #4 - Painting Techniques
Understanding some basic painting techniques will help you experiment with various styles and create your own unique artistic voice if you're wanting to improve your painting capabilities.
If you're interested in learning more about how to interpret art, check out our videos on where to start for tips on where to look for inferences. ✨
PART 1: Palette Knife
youtube
You might mistakenly believe that a palette knife is just useful for blending paint on the palette; however, this tool can also be utilized to add some distinctive effects to your work that a brush would find challenging to achieve. Just load a small bit of paint onto the edge of the palette knife, and dab the edge of the knife onto the canvas. Simply make sure the paint is applied evenly on the knife's edge. You must also constantly reload your palette knife between strokes because you typically only gets one line every stroke.
PART 2: Pouring Technique
youtube
Pouring is a basic but effective technique that works best with acrylic paint. This method includes pouring paint directly onto a surface and tilting the canvas at various angles to activate the paint and move it around. Acrylic paint must be rendered liquid and pourable with the addition of a Pouring Medium and other components as necessary in order to do the acrylic pouring. With the use of this technique, the colors can naturally meld together to produce colorful, one-of-a-kind artwork that reflects the interactions between colors.
PART 3: Dabbing Technique
youtube
Dabbing Technique involves dabbing paint onto a surface using a stiff bristle brush, paper towel or sponge. Applying the paint fast and gently is recommended. A piece gains movement and texture via dabbing. For example, you may construct treetops that seem to be moving in the wind using the dabbing technique. For inspiration, take a look at some examples of Claude Monet’s work.
PART 4: Sgraffito Technique
youtube
Sgraffito painting technique allows artists to add more colors to underpainting layers once it is completely dried. In order to reveal what is beneath a layer of paint, this includes scratching. Artists can successfully scratch off the superficial layer to reveal distinctive patterns or shapes by covering a previous surface with another layer. It is possible to use any object that will allow you to scratch a line into the paint.
That would be our stop! There's a lot more techniques, so explore more!
~ Now pack your art supplies and start creating! Safe travels🚍🎨

Me: I'm not going to be perfectionist about this, it's a silly little fanart, it's okay that my coloring is kind of funky. Me, 5 minutes after posting in the discord: But what if I fuck with the saturation settings to determine where I can adjust the tones for clarity.
Tumblr media
in my defense, looking at the gray scales really did help me figure out why these two were blending into the background so badly:
Tumblr media
I just took a screenshot of the piece (the version on the left) then pasted it into a single layer and desaturated it to see things in gray scale. This let me see the places where there wasn't enough value contrast. Based on that, I desaturated and lightened the character on the left's shirt, desaturated and lightened the background, lightened up the shading on the setting so it didn't distract from the figures, and made the shadows on their background legs a higher contrast. Those adjustments took like...ten minutes with a mouse? And I think they make things visually clearer. Definitely gonna use this process going forward with pieces.
