@rememberingwildlife #RememberingAfricanWildDogs Competition winner Prelena Soma Owen @_memoryfactory_ 🙏🏻 #Repost from @rememberingwildlife “We are delighted today to be able to reveal the stunning 10 images which have been selected as the winners of our Remembering African Wild Dogs photo contest! With, once again, an incredibly high standard, it was extremely challenging for our panel of judges (guest judges this year were Levison Wood and Daryl Balfour, to whom we are very grateful ) to narrow it down. But we got there in the end with a real variety of images, settings and styles. We feel as a set they really add to the book, which already includes beautiful images from the likes of Frans Lanting, Art Wolfe, Greg du Toit and Jonathan & Angela Scott. Congratulations to the winners: Lance van de Vyver, Gregg Robinson, Torie Hilley, Matthew Armstrong-Ford, Dawn Perkins, Prelena Soma Owen, Tami Walker, Nick Rabjohn, Kathryn Sowerbutts and @atkinson_photography_safaris ! 🍾 Their images will appear in the Remembering African Wild Dogs book which will be published in November 2021 and which will be the 6th book in the groundbreaking series which has raised more than £775,000 / $1 million USD for conservation so far. Commiserations and thanks to all of the other entrants - the contest raised more than £5000 for which we are very grateful. This beautiful book is now available for pre-order from our website 🙏 #RememberingWildlife #RememberingBooks #ConservationPhotography #WildlifePhotographersUnited #AfricanWildDog #EndangeredSpecies #Wildography #wildlifephotography #prelenasomaowen #cutepuppypics #wilddogs #paintedwolf #protectwildlife (at Satara Rest Camp - Kruger National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPalLCVAUdK/?utm_medium=tumblr

about the blog
Hello, and welcome to my little corner of the internet. You can call me Rowanheart if you’d like, but I also go by a chosen name of Painted Wolf. I am a writer, an artist, and a crafter all rolled up and kneaded together, glazed with the quintessence of my personality and soul, and baked with the warmth and love of Jesus Christ into the person that I am today. I'm a United States citizen, born and raised, though both sides of my family have recent members of the past who immigrated here from other countries - English and Irish on one side, and French-Canadian on the other. Within that French-Canadian ancestry, I have Native ancestry with the Algonquin and Huron tribes. Like many who live in the United States I have found that these pieces of my ancestry have had a definite impact on who I was growing up, and who I am now. In 2018 I made a big life change and started to form my own independent business, working with art and hand-made crafts, and also working on strengthening and improving myself as a writer. My art, and my crafts, can be found gathered together on my DeviantArt Page; you can also find (and purchase) them on my RedBubble and my Fine Art America pages. As for here on this Tumblr blog, I share my writing. My overall dreams are just as far-reaching as anyone's, but my dreams for this blog are a bit easier to pin down. Practically, I want to use this blog as a way to write frequently, to work on improving my skills and bettering myself as a writer. Moreover, I want to use this as a place to share my writing - non-fiction, some poetry, as well as some regular fiction/fantasy from time to time. I also want to share my story, at least the parts that I feel might help others navigate their own story. Kwayakotàge means "to learn the true story" in Algonquin.* Sharing my story means sharing what I have learned, and will continue to learn, to be the true story - God's story. I am a Christian - specifically a Catholic, though I did not start out that way, and years ago would never have imagined that to be so. My hope is that by sharing my own story, as I work through my own experiences past and present, I will help others find the Truth as well. I do not know everything, nor will I ever claim to, but I hope that as I continue on this journey you might find some joy in following along with me. *(Algonquin translation of "kwayakotàge")

pieces of a Lifesong - 1
There are a lot of people who will tell you all about their childhood memories, and what they can recall. They'll spin elaborate stories of wonderful times and fun gatherings, or tragic accidents and unfortunate events - they'll remember their childhood, or they will say that they do, without any trouble at all. I don't know if that is normal, or if it's perfectly common to only remember small clips and pieces of your childhood; but I do know that for me, normal is the latter. I don't really remember a lot; most of what I remember is sort of how you might remember a dream. I know the specifics of plenty of events in my childhood because of the stories that I've heard, but when I try to think of them in my own mind I can only recall emotions, general ideas of how things might've happened, and - occasionally -  a few memories do come around into sharp focus. I have been a Christian for my entire life, and so to tell about my memories of my early Christian faith I have to delve into those dream-like memories, and utilize those few sharply-focused moments as foundations to weave together a story. My father grew up in a very Catholic family, and to become part of that family my Mother - also a Christian, but not Catholic - had to promise that she would raise their children, together, in the Catholic church. What she didn't realize when she agreed was that my father, as soon as their youngest (that's me) was baptized, would cease attending church at all. I was far too young to remember this part of my life; my Mother had told me that she continued attending the Catholic church for some time after he stopped going, but that when it was clear he wouldn't be returning, she could no longer take being alone in a quiet Catholic service with two young children at a church that did not offer a during-service class or daycare. She brought us to a Protestant church instead, and that's the church that I remember growing up in. I was too young during that brief time at the Catholic church to remember much, but I do recall some other moments from my childhood where we attended Catholic services - funerals, mainly. My memories of these services are brief and fluttering, but I can recall the strong smell of the incense used and how it burned my nose. I also remember communion during one funeral in particular; for the longest time I remembered this as a Catholic funeral, but now that I am Catholic myself there are parts of this memory which make it clear to me me that it was very likely not a Catholic church. The memory still feels important though. It's honestly a bit embarrassing now that I'm older (which is probably why it's one of the sharper memories I have of childhood!) but this is, after all, about honesty! The funeral was for someone who was close to me, family-wise, but I cannot recall precisely whom it was. I remember kneeling in the front row of the pews next my mother while they brought communion to the family. I was old enough at this point that we had been attending my Mother's church for some years, and through them I knew of communion as being a small square of white bread and a tiny cup of grape juice. So at the funeral I happily took the offered wafer, after it had been dipped into the chalice of "grape juice," and popped it into my mouth just as I saw my Mother do beside me. And then I promptly gagged at the taste of the 'juice.' My Mother was thankfully prepared for the possibility, and quickly ducked down to whisper instructions at me. "Don't you spit that out!" she whispered urgently, clearly knowing me well enough at that age to recognize what my expression meant would come. "That's Jesus!" So I knew that I couldn't spit it out - I loved Jesus, and I had learned enough from our regular church by then to understand that 'spitting him out' would've been terribly dreadful. I remember clenching my teeth together and forcing the bitter flavor in my mouth down into my throat, then gagging once more for good measure as I whispered back to my Mother, "Jesus tastes bad!" The rest of my early Church memories are fleeting, cloudy, and few. I was raised in the church that my Mother brought us to after she left the Catholic church - a Conservative Congregational church local to my home town. The people were friendly and welcoming, and it was here that I spent the early years of my Christian faith.
